When government policies affect over 90% of the livelihood of a particular group it needs to be revisited. The argument of punishment for importing contraband does not suffice. The Igbo was strategically targeted by placing a ban on those commodities their mercantile operations depended on. This is a part of the problem.
Oga stop this your propaganda, abeg. shocked The Igbo were not specifically targeted by govt policies on importation. All importers who brought in contraband goods or evaded customs duties were affected, irrespective of their ethnic origins. undecided Are you trying to make people believe that the Igbo importers are the greatest lawbreakers since you claim their goods were seized because of the ban? After all, these importers knew the goods were banned, so why did they still go ahead to import such goods? huh

The Southwest has made money not just from agriculture and manufacturing, but also from ICT services, financial services and real estate, as well. People have not talked about deliberate government policies that were targeted specifically to Igbo. Some of the policy include the importation of fabrics and several other items. Igbo goods were targeted for customs seizure. This situation is a great part of the poor economic situation in the South East. Many cottage industry grew from money earned from importation.
You people have started your victim mentality again. sad Tell us first, why were goods targeted for customs seizure? Wasn't it because the importers had either evaded customs duties, or had imported contraband goods? huh Why are you trying to make it seem as if people from other tribes are not involved in importation? And why are you trying to make it seem as if only Igbo importers were the ones whose goods were seized? shocked So the ban on various items only affected Igbo importers of such items, and not the non-Igbo importers, is that what you are trying to say?

The Global Women Petroleum & Energy Club Awards have been recognising excellence in oil, gas and energy every year since 2000, and one of their aims is to provide a platform for women in the upstream petroleum sector. One of the previous award winners of the 2016 Global Women Petroleum & Energy awards in Africa is Damilola Owolabi. Other past award winners have come from Morocco, Kenya and South Africa.

https://cdn.dailytimes.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/dammy.jpg

25-year old Damilola Owolabi who is the Chief Executive Officer of Dreg Waters Petroleum & Logistics Limited, received the 7th Global Women Petroleum & Energy Club Award for Africa at the 23rd Africa Oil Week/Upstream Conference in October 2016 in Cape Town, South Africa.

The award is given in recognition of rising and significant role of women, in global oil, gas and energy, in key roles. Global Women Petroleum & Energy Club is part of the suit of clubs and networks of Global Pacific & Partners, a leading advisory firm in the world upstream industry, established over three decades ago, with a distinctive portfolio. The Clubs and Networks act to connect corporate and state players, to facilitate critical industry interests and deal flow in the global upstream, providing unique global networking forums and allied social programmes for companies, governments and national oil companies within the worldwide industry, and across the value chain.

Dreg Waters, which is run by Damilola Owolabi, is dedicated to helping clients secure licenses and permits for oil & gas operations in Nigeria, clearing of petroleum products into the country, leasing of marine equipment and supplying of manpower labour to organisations.

Widely known for her undaunted passion to deliver value-adding services that promote oil and gas businesses in Africa, Damilola takes pride in the capacity of her company to provide clients with all the necessary information, documentation, products and manpower labour they need for successful operation. The award conferment is coming on the heels of her efforts to make business swifter for the sector players in Nigeria. She leads a vibrant team at Dreg Waters that seamlessly ensure that all necessary documents required by sector players from the appropriate authorities are: correct, up-to-date and given priority treatment.

Owolabi's clients include multinational giants such as Total, Saipem, Julius Berger, Shell, Bourbon, Van Oord, Nigeria LNG etc. She notes that part of the efforts of her company to remain relevant, is to be innovative and expansive in terms of quality of services offered to clients. She explained that despite the nationwide recession affecting all industries including oil, her organization still operates in line with the company’s vision and has advanced beyond procuring licenses and permits for operators.

“To add value to the industry, we are now supplying petroleum products offshore, leasing various marine equipment and dealing with supply of manpower labour among other services rendered to local and international companies as well.”

Owolabi added: “There will always be opportunities in crisis especially where you are solving a problem and offering value added services.”
Furthermore, she noted that since the global market decline has forced Nigeria into a thinking economy, the oil and gas sector is requiring innovation and as a result, it is no longer enough for sector players to recycle the same old services or re-invent the wheel, especially where customers are demanding greater value.

Owolabi, who secured an exhibition booth for her organisation at the forthcoming Africa Oil Week conference, will be giving international participating organisations, a generous insight towards investing opportunities in the oil and gas sector in Nigeria. http://www.marketingedge.com.ng/2016/10/25/dreg-waters-expands-services-in-oil-and-gas-sector/

The problem is that such venture is not profitable for third party service providers. It's not like auto repairs were you would still have millions driving a car that has been out of manufactures warranty. This is marginal business, only a handful of them within a particular area. The reason those equipment were grounded in the first place is because they were no longer sustainable in term of complying with industrial standard and regulations.

Quality control and management system is a very detail orientated discipline. To meet regulatory standard, periodic inspections are mandated. Naturally, equipment over time, due to wears tears become obsolete .

This is what they would have done. Considering the size of this hospital, the huge investment and the potential for profit making, they ought to have approached an equipment manufacturer. Companies like GE, Phillips, Toshiba, Samsung etc are ever willing to partners with others. They will provide the equipment, and technical support for as long as you are willing to work with them.

The bottom line. Less downturn and more productivity for the hospital. But most importantly patients receive quality, safe and efficient service .
Oga, my earlier response still stands. undecided Reach out to the management of ABUAD Teaching Hospitals, and share your observations directly with them, instead of trashing their efforts online. Most of the OEM manufacturers do not have direct representatives in Nigeria, so don't be surprised if they refer you to someone in South Africa or Egypt, for further information who may not have a clue about how to meet your needs. You cannot speak for GE, Toshiba, Samsung or Phillips in this regard, except you are one of their sales specialists. sad We do not even know if ABUAD ever approached those manufacturers, and they were given steep conditions that could not be met? This is just speculation, though. Anyway, facts are sacred, but opinions are free. Kindly share your observations directly with ABUAD. Good day.

You don't get it.
I don't think you know how a teaching hospital really works.
It's not only about quality of service.
When you go to a teaching hospital as a patient, you know that you will definitely be used as a teaching tool. This is compensated for by the quality yet cheap care you get.
In this hospital, care won't be cheap. Will patients who pay lots of money accept being used to teach medical students?
Remember the most important part of the training is by the bed of the patient.
Oga, all sorts of patients can be admitted in a teaching hospital. undecided The high-fee paying ones can have their own section, where their cases will be handled by top notch consultants who will give them VIP treatment, and five-star premium medical care. cheesy Another section can offer basic, affordable, quality care to the masses, who can be clerked by interns and used as teaching aids, by the professors. Nothing spoil. sad Don't underestimate the resilience of many Nigerians, who do not mind travelling for miles to get good quality medical care. In Ondo & Ekiti States, as well as the neighbouring Edo & Kwara states, most teaching hospitals lack adequate facilities to offer quality medical services, that are close to what ABUAD Teaching hospital can provide to the citizens. If the state govts are able to put in place adequate health insurance schemes for their citizens, it would go a long way in helping to offset the medical bills that the patients would incur.

This is exactly my point. There is no need for those elephant size "photocopy" machines. Those are CR equipment with more radiation does. People are getting rid of those for DR. In fact health insurance companies have greatly reduced the amount payable when images are taken with CR. This is in a bid to reduce how much radiation patients are exposed to. I will update with the picture of a detector which has long replaced these antiquated machines. How would people feel if they go in for a chest xray for something as simple as cough but few months down the line, they are diagnosed of cancer or some DNA mutation?
Guy, instead if thrashing their efforts online, why not reach out to ABUAD Teaching Hospital management with your observations, and offer to assist them? sad Or better still, pay a visit to the facility and give them your expert advice? Many teaching hospitals in Nigeria do not even have these 15-year old machines that you are condemning, and many patients rely on older equipment at the general hospitals for diagnosis, and even survival.

sonnie10:
You won't understand. If only you can see what I am seeing. One example, if the vacuum tube in the CR breaks, which is a common occurrence in this set up, where will they get a replacement.
Remember, that machine is more than 15years and manufacturers are no longer producing the parts, that I know. How on earth do they intend to keep up without protracted down time?
Isn't there something called after-sales maintenance programme, anymore? Or isn't training of onsite technicians, part of the deal for buying such specialised equipment? Sometimes, a manufacturer might phase out a certain piece of equipment, but 3rd party companies that have been providing technical support for such machines, might end up developing alternative options, or recycling different spare parts in order to continue offering maintenance of such equipment, in secondary markets. We have seen such things happen in the telecom industry. I don't know if the same thing occurs in the healthcare equipment sector.

I remembered the much celebrated Akwa Ibom hospital built by Akpabio and why it was shut down. The hospital management said because the poor who patronizes this hospital could not pay for the bill, government was subsidizing it heavily.
On why PMB and the rich don't use hospitals in Nigeria at least the few that are equipped, the Minister for health responded that these set people need their privacy.
If you factor none patronage by those who should do so to sustain the hospital, your guess is as good as mine concerning the future of this hospital. Is Afe ready and willing to subsidize treatment for the poor?
This attitude cuts across every facet of our life.
We have to change the way we do things to build our nation.
No, sir! angry The problem with Ibom Specialist Hospital built by Akpabio was poor management, and the new state govt administration's nonchalance towards the project. Can you imagine that the hospital was NOT connected to the power grid, and had to depend on generators for several months for power? shocked Imagine the horrendous cost of providing electricity to power the entire complex. They did not recruit adequate fully qualified local staff and medical doctors to man the hospital and attend to patients, instead they relied on foreign medical personnel whose salaries were being paid in dollars. Critical equipment needed for diagnostics and providing medical care, was not even installed in the hospital! In fact, the list of bad management practices is just too long to be rehashed here...

Have you asked yourself why private hospitals such as Lagoon Hospital, St. Nicholas as well as Reddington all in Lagos, are thriving and making good profits annually? Yet govt owned hospitals are badly run and folding up? huh

The problem here now is this. How will students clerk a patient who pays heavy money in this kind of facility. It may end up being a nice high-end hospital but not likely going to be a good teaching hospital.
Why won't it be a good teaching hospital? huh It is affiliated to a university with a full-fledged college of medicine, which has fully qualified professors of medicine and consultants, in attendance. In fact, I doubt if LUTH (Lagos University Teaching Hospital) which has been in existence for over 50 years, can boast of the number of staff and equipment that ABUAD Teaching hospital currently has within its premises. So what is your point? undecided

shoboy9:
This doesn't look too good. The basis of learning and research is numbers. If the patients are too few or general public cannot afford their services, it will not be able to fulfil the function of a teaching hospital. It will lose focus and die off.
The same thing was said when Babcock University opened its own hospital. sad Now, the waiting list is so long, that patients have to book appointment dates for surgery, weeks in advance. Once a good healthcare facility opens, and doctors are able to certify that it is good, the patients would come. All it takes is a referral. undecided We do not have adequate healthcare facilities within the country, so any additional one is welcome. Please pray this initiative succeeds. Do not kill it with your pessimism.....

@Olalekanbanky1, I tagged u along cos u seem to be frm d parent institution & may, therefore, be better informed on this.
People will come from outside the state. undecided It is not for people of Ekiti State alone. I have seen patients travel all the way from Delta State to Lagos, just to be able to receive orthopedic treatment. Patients leave Ilorin in Kwara state to come to Lagos, just to receive chemotherapy. cry Patients are referred from Bayelsa to other states, simply because such patients need to access healthcare facilities that are not found within their state. I can give you real life examples. shocked The management of ABUAD just needs to market their medical services to all the NMA Associations in every state of the federation. The problem in Nigeria has always been inadequate medical facilities, and not a lack of patients willing to use those facilities, if they have the right information and adequate funds to do so. sad

All ABUAD Teaching Hospital needs to do, is to establish low-cost affordable hostels and guest houses for patients that come from outside the state and their relatives, so they can have a place to stay whenever they need to go for treatment at the hospital. undecided
