charlie193:Admissions to US Universities is never solely on your GRE scores, GRE or GMAT is just one of the pre-requisites. So the fact that you scored low doesn't rule out your admission chances although you may not qualify for certain Fellowships/Assistanships etc with a low GRE. Infact I know many Universities in the US that do not require GRE for admission to postgraduate studies. So, low score in GRE is never the end of the road. In most cases your bachelors GPA is the most important (i.e 3.0 and Above) Now to my 2cents ![]() You don't have any problem to be honest. na indecision they worry you, lol . But I can definitely relate with your dilemma. You just need to make up your mind and make a decision. I believe both U of T and Mcgill are great Universities. Although if I were you, I would choose MCGill, I don't know much about U of Texas but McGill is the second best University in Canada aside Utoronto, and you definitely stand greater career prospects both in Canada and Nigeria with a degree from MCGill. It will boost your profile. However I would choose USA over Canada for a place to study anyday anytime, which means I could possibly decide to go U of T in the US, even though its not in the first 40 by ranking. Finance is also another important factor that should influence your choice. Do your mathematics well, Can you afford both Unis? Maybe one is significantly cheaper than the other. Mcgill is more likely to be cheaper ![]() Just make a decision. Nothing is ever too late. If finally you decide U of T do your research well, looks like you're in a tight corner with VISA processing at this time, but you can always defer your admission till next spring2011 or fall2011. If na Mcgill then its all good. So you see you have no Problem, he he, problem shared is problem solved innit?, lol God bless |
mohaka:@ Mohaka, why not take TOEFL and SAT exam and apply for a proper honours degree in the US. To be honest with you, I don't think you stand a good chance of getting a student VISA to US for an ordinary associate degree. I like to be realistic with people. You would look dumb to the entry clearance officers (ECO) When you tell them you plan to come back after just an associate degree , My advise is you take SAT & TOEFL (they 're very easy from experience ) apply for a proper honours degree(bachelors) programme and you stand a good chance of getting the F-1 Visa. This is just an opinion (my 2cents ) , you can still try your luck if you want to. ![]() |
@ Poster, No disrepect to you but thats not a practical way of solving problems. It will only worsen the situation. I don't think you know the consequences. Hundreds of people will die on a daily basis. Nigeria will just be like the popular "Call of Duty" game. |
Thanks a lot for your responses people Its quite disappointing to find out that Int'l students can't work off campus in US except in very special circumstances. Their's defo gonna be serious competition with on campus jobs. It must be very hard to find on campus job then, I wonder how Int'l students without on campus jobs will be able to survive. Is the ban on off campus jobs just for the first year only or for as long as one is on the F-1 student visa status? |

waleprizu:@ Waleprizu congrats! You can easily get an unofficial copy of your transcripts. take that with you to the embassy! what University are you going, if you don't mind sharing ![]() |
Hello Great Nairalanders. Everyone is more than welcome to advise. Especially Nigerians who are studying in US and UK universities. I am an individual that cherish Int'l education a lot, and I believe it will open doors of opportunities in Nigeria for the future. Most people have argued that it is cheaper and faster to have masters here in the UK than in the US, because its only a year in the UK and as such cheaper on the long run compared to USA where masters is almost 2years. Others have argued that masters in US looks more promising because of better opportunites and size. More importantly, I ve been informed that both Postgrad students and undergrad students cannot work off campus in the USA (F1 status requirement) unlike UK where you are allowed to work off campus and make some £££ but with limited hours (i know this because I m in UK). Is this truely the case in the states? I would like great NLs who have had Postgrad studies in the US and UK to judge this topic from experience and to provide practical advise on this topic. You advise might just help a brother make a good decision. NB: I m not asking for a comparison of the two countries, I would only like to know if its true you can't work as a student in US and if a masters in US is more promising than a masters in UK. Many Thanks |
vandops:Good Advice, don't lie |
Princek12:@ Princek12link I wonder what you're on about. Your response is definitely one sided and you've been terribly misinformed, shoud incase you haven't been to the UK before. Even though I started this thread in other to know in what aspects is US better than UK . UK may be a small island yes, or it may be crowded but that doesn't mean everyone wash toilets in the UK and neither does it mean thousands of people don't wash toilet in the US. I can tell you I have friends studying in the USA that often complain of hardship. From the ridiculuos amount they pay for Postgraduate studies as int'l student. They can't even work off campus. whereas UK is cheaper in terms of solid education on the long run. That doesn't mean I wouldn't choose the US over UK, if I have the opprtunity to do so but please the situation in the UK is not as bad as some people have described it. If you have papers in both countries you will enjoy. if you don't, na serious wahala |
tunnytox:@TUNNYTOX, are you by any means implying that UK is better than Canada? |

Congrats freeman007, fagbon01, Young M, Seadog, femilangy and others that have secured their students Visas for Post graduate study in the US. 1) Pls I would like to find out if you guys had to pay full or part of tuition fees before been granted a visa? 2) I just wanted to clarify if paying of tuition fees is a requirement for US Visa application success? 3) Did you guys pay your full tuition fee before applying for Visa? Is it safe not to pay tuition fees before applying for US Student Visa? 4) The school I am interested in doesn't require GRE or GMATHS due to my UK bachelors degree, TOEFL score and Professional experience and as such I feel there's no need for me to take the GRE test. Is GRE compulsory in other to secure a Visa, even when its not required by the Uni? I would be grateful if you guys can nail these questions spot on Many Thanks |

I m also looking forward to doing my masters here next year here or in the US for a change of environment. Pls bear it in mind that you guys are on a journey, please focus on your studies when you get to the US and achieve something good. It will definitely open doors of opportunity for you guys in Nigeria. God bless the federal republic! ![]() Many Thanks A. A |
@ Ugojnr Interesting Topic. I am also a foreign trained Nigerian graduate too and also looking foward to get NYSC out of the way. I believe there's a batch C this year though its not yet on the nysc website. I know I would haveto go to Abuja for registration and to pick up call up letter. But my concern is the same thing you have expressed here. what was the situation when you got to Abuja?, Did you have a choice of picking where you want to serve or they just placed you somewhere randomly? pls let me know! Many Thanks |
@ Nat138 thanks for your response. Yes I finished Uni last year and definitely looking forward to get NYSC out of the way. I am just waiting for the BATCH C time table to be out, so as to know when exactly to go and resgister at the directorate in Abuja. I really hope what they claim on their website is not true about foreign students not having a choice of where to serve. I guess I just need to get people to confirm that for me. tnx ![]() |
Great Nairalanders, particular those who work with the NYSC corp or those who have info. My friends and I are conisdering returning for NYSC BATCH C this year, We are foreign trained Nigerian graduates. We were informed that there is usually a Batch C starting in October/November time. Is this true as we didn't see this on their website? Another thing I find worrying is that they now state on their website that we foreign trained graduates have no choice of where to serve, like nigerian home students . This was contradictory to what many people claim that Int'l students are allowed to choose where to serve. Is this the current practise by NYSC or just a statement on their website? pls see below (as copied from their website) MOBILISATION OF FOREIGN-TRAINED NIGERIAN GRADUATES INTO / EXEMPTION AND CLEARANCE FROM NATIONAL YOUTH SERVICE CORPS SCHEME.
