Yep, and they stole from Singapore, the USA, and many of their former colonies who are doing well.

Nigeria's problems started when we refused, at independence, to do what South Korea, who at 1960 was behind Senegal in per captia GDP...did . An economy based on industrial growth and development

Instead we did as the USSR did. Sell resources, import consumer goods, including the ones we could make at home. At least we had the good sense to end subsides on food, otherwise we would have long since collapsed economically. Beyond the awful state we are in now
Nigeria was bound to be poor at some point. Two million bpd of crude oil can't save the country. If your population quadrupled in fifty years you will be poor at some point before you recover

Why should a Nigerian legally living in Nigeria be asked to leave when the law gives him the rights to stay?

South East is not lacking behind in development in fact south east is the only region that is developed by its people and not outsiders
Even non Nigerians are living in Nigeria unmolested so nobody is asking anybody to leave and there are millions of non Igbos in the SE and they are fending for themselves. They have HNIs among them. Why do you say the SE is developed by indigenes alone? That is not correct.

If you want igbos to go back home it's very simple

Give state power to build and operate sea ports and airports and place them at international level if they meet the criteria

Give state resources control and police

You can't use federal money to develop Lagos then want only Yorubas to enjoy it

3.9 trillion has been budgeted for Lagos alone South East got 450 billion and you want us to leave Lagos?
Nobody will leave where they have income which they use to support their loved ones but at the same time where you can have full control as a people is your homeland.

You haven't mentioned 1 things that had been solved o

mention these things that taxes do that they can't do themselves
You have no manners on how to discuss civilly on social media. Why would you say I am talking nonsense? Please do learn manners.
In the US taxes take care of many things like unemployment benefits, disability cheques, public education and a host of others. Without taxes they would be a third world country.

What they do in rich or high income countries is fix minimum wage, ensure compliance and make sure there is no working under the table. They capture every income earners for the purpose of taxation. Any country can do it. Most people in any country will struggle to pay one month rent if they are fired from their jobs So there are poor people everywhere not only in Africa. Low income countries just need to organize themselves and they will be ok like high income countries and on a much lower budget.
If an haircut costs thirty times in New York than it costs in Ethiopia, it means that sector is inflated in New York thirty times and that is the case for most sectors of the economy in high income nations starting with rent and services. Hope you understand now. One thousand dollars in Ethiopia can work more than 15 thousand dollars in NY in rent and services which is the majority of any economy

Planned real estate just means you just can't build anywhere and you have to pay for permits. It may have effects on the value of real estate but even in North Korea with a per Capita income of 1500 dollars you can't build just anywhere in the capital. So planning is not the main cause. The main cause are people and corporations that buy up real estate anywhere they encounter it with the hope to resell at a profit and there are many corporations and individuals like that.

You can collect taxes from anybody earning income whether rich or poor and that is what they do in high income countries.
You are free to teach your kids that the color of their skin is their problem, after all your head ache

Why will you pay 50k dollars per annum on average when a four bedroom flat costs less than thirty thousand dollars to build? You don't need high wages when cost of living is low. Can't you grasp that? If all countries pay same rent then the GDP of high income countries will nominally deflate while real production will be able to increase. I hope you understand because your statement that the GDP of African countries will deflate by ninety percent shows you don't understand

Oil isn't the only natural resource bro...

Nigeria is one of the richest countries in the world in terms of resources. Maybe 90% is untapped or unexplored.

My argument is because the US or Norway does it doesn't mean it is the best or that it's guaranteed to work in our own situation.

Taxation favors them because it was adapted to their system. I'm not saying taxation should be abolished completely in Nigeria. But we shouldn't be so highly dependent on taxing because we have more resources as compared to those countries.

Personally, I believe taxation should be some sort of last resort not the first option for a country like Nigeria!
All countries are blessed with natural resources one way or the other but if your govt depends on money from natural resources then the country will not be competitive even if the revenue is high. Tax is the umbilical cord joining the economy to the government. If your revenue is dependent on the health of the economy then you will take care of the economy automatically.

That question is for Gowon who broke the agreement he signed. Some of you still think Gowon fought for 'one Nigeria'. Gowon fought for 'one Nigeria under the North'. The war was all about making the North masters of Nigeria.
There was competition among the Nigerian ethnic groups but Gowon himself is a Northern Christian and not a proper member of the Muslim North. His people are killed during riots as well. He was not necessarily working for the core North. The north was split too into west central and etc. What Colonel Ojukwu should have done was to insist on a referendum before state creation and that would have set a precedent. However we can't go back to yesterday.

Thats another reason why they will never teach Nigerian history. A lot of people still think that Ojukwu just got up, declared Biafra for no reason, and without any mandate to do so

They dont realise that it was the breaking of the Aburi accord by Gowon that prompted the Eastern Nigerian Consultative Forum to seat, deliberate, and mandate Ojukwu to declare the Eastern Region a seperate country
Was it Worth it to go to war over the Aburi accord? The people that signed were not elected so it was not surprising that the politicians directed Gowon to reject it. Then the people given new states wanted it

Actually Nigeria isn't poor but it is not well managed. There has never been famine in the country for instance and if you can solve your food problem the rest is easy according to a Yoruba proverb
Then as another proverb says 'omo bere osi bere' The more your children the more your poverty. Nigeria's population has quadrupled in the last sixty years. No rich country is like that

How can you tax people at a rate of fifty percent?! Are you high??
I said taking fifty percent of GDP as taxes. There are different taxes like income tax, VAT property tax and etc which normally should add up to fifty percent of the GDP or more
In most working countries the sum total of what government takes is up to fifty percent of the GDP

Copycat syndrome is sometimes the bane of our problems as Africans.

It's good to copy sometimes... but other times is necessary to fashion out tailor made solutions to our problems.

It's the only way we can go. I always use China as an example. Their solutions are tailor made to fit their problems.

They don't copy the west hook, line and sinker. The worst they do, and we ought to do is modify what works there to suit our problems.

Another good example of tailor made solutions is Singapore!
Not necessarily. US and Norway produce more oil per Capita than Nigeria.
If you want a working country, the sacrifice you need to pay is high taxes

Nigeria normally ought not to go that route. Taxation should be for countries like the UK.

It's only lazy Nigerian leaders... leaders too lazy to think that would go that route.

Nigeria is too blessed abundantly to have an economy dependent on heavy taxation!
You don't need a benevolent leader. What you need is a viable, tested and trusted system. What has worked all over the world is taxing the economy at a rate of around fifty percent to pay for good education, universal healthcare, infrastructure and etc
PoliticsRe: Most Nigerians Do Not Understand That Nigeria Is A Very Poor Country. by lawani(m): 4:33pm On Oct 17, 2025
You don't even need any natural resources to become prosperous as a nation. What you need is ambitious leadership that will take half of the GDP as taxes and plough it back into the economy until the country becomes competitive

PoliticsRe: Why Enforcing Anti-grazing Laws In Nigeria Is A Volatile Tightrope by lawani(m): 3:16pm On Oct 15, 2025
WizardOfNG:
It is a big deal because of the Nigerian factor whereby the herders don't want to embrace modernity and change to transition away from moving cattle across grazing route from the North to South of Nigeria.

Aid this aso it the ulterior expansionist motives of their sponsors who deliberately want them present outside the North to be causing insecurity and unrest.

The unique complexity of what has created the problem of open grazing for Nigeria, being used as an excuse to commit crime and create insecurity, requires innovative solutions.

RUGA , for example, was good but scare-mongering and short-sightedness killed it.

Main reason it is good is because allowing ranches across the South for breeding cattle leads to the containment of grazing activities, within designated areas, without giving off the signal Fulanis are not wanted outside their traditional homes in the North.

If you have watched the videos online of confrontations you would have noted where Fulanis are insisting, as if rehashing indoctrinated speech, to Southerners challenging them to leave their land, that they are entilted to move around Nigeria.

In the middle belt, they make same argument with deadly violence even. Would it not make sense to ignore scaremongering of Nigerians, who think think zero presence of Fulanis in their land solves all presence of insecurity, and government forges ahead with commercial ranching that provides controlled presence of Cattle rearing in all regions of Nigeria meaning whoever engages in open grazing after that the beginning of formal ranching can be challenged and prosecuted with the support of all?
We are saying the same thing. The herders need to be trained in modern methods of animal husbandry after which they should be given a deadline. Britain is only around sixty million people and they have around ten million cattle heads. We are over 200 million with over 20 million cattle heads.

If you conversant with cattle business if the truth needs to be said, it is capital intensive and why most try to cut corners.

500 cows will need a minimum of 1000 acres and that when you will have to supplement with meals. For strictly grazing, you will required Mimi in of 3000 so as to do rotational grazing. Then when you start going mechanized, that’s like death sentence.

So I know what it entails when I share these perspective as I do not want to be careless or inconsiderable.

If the government wants to curb the menace, it must make sacrifices.
One thousand is big business like someone setting up a small brewery. You can do one hundred or even fifty. That number can sustain a family

You cannot use the actions of few to judge all. Let’s both imagine that my recommendation was approved. Where will you find the criminals and their cattle’s? They will disappear and probably move into other trade where their crimes can thrive of any is left.

But you have to look for measures to separate the good from the bad. Only the good ones will accept your good gesture, and then you will be able to deal with the bad ones.

You can’t offer such magnitude of assistance and be rebuked when you unleash terror on the disobeying ones and criminals.

We are Nigerians, we know how Nigerians learn. I can assure you, before you slaughter 1000 cows, all would have adhered and those that cannot would have left your state
It is not easy for them because the system is their culture and they were born into it. They can't imagine spending money or effort to feed their cattle when that is what other livestock owners do.
They are well off people and can sort out themselves. Other people in business need low interest loans too. You have 500 cows and you are poor?
There is no other way than to give them deadline and they will sort out themselves. The government can help with free training

True, and why we cannot call all of them criminals.

The government needs a good justification to enforce laws. Miyetti Allah won’t bark with proper measures. If you need land, visit the state government, and if you need loan, head to GT bank for low interest loans.

With that, you can unleash hell and no reasonable person will stand up to protest what’s not. Such measure will give you the full backing of all Nigerians.
If you are driving just one hundred heads of cattle about there is no way you will not become a criminal because you will destroy people's farms and not be able to pay for it
