USA if you can make it here. The immigration process is getting stricter due to alleged abuse of different visa category. But if you can get hold of a valid immigrant visa/green card, opportunities abound from teaching to engineering, business, trade (importing and exporting of cars and other good)........The weather here may be a little better than Canada.

Sir......burning down the embassy because of supposed refusal of visa is irresponsible and uncivilized. Remember travelling to the USA is not a right but perhaps a privilege just like no one is forced to pay visa fees. You may want to apply to other countries that issue visas "easily"

Hmmmmmmmmm sad. So invariably, the US is punishing genuine travelers because of the sins of Nigerians who have overstayed their visas in the US?
I dont think their intent is to punish....my opinion is to make the process so difficult so that people r discouraged from applying n probably filter through applicants for those with genuine cause....it is always hard to tell who is genuine...plus sometimes few bad tomatoes affects several good ones in a basket

I am asking this question with a heavy heart because a friend of mine told me his F1 visa application—as well as that of all intending students to the US—was denied this morning. He answered all the questions of the visa officer perfectly but he was still denied. He was aked if he is married and had kids, and he answered in the negative. Could his being single be a factor in the denial of his application? Or is there something else prompting the US embassy to deny Nigerians visas? I am really perplexed because my friend expended a lot of money to apply and gain admission to a US school. If the US doesnt want Nigerians to come to their country anymore, they can as well a formal and well publicized directive to that effect. The practice of swindling Nigerians of exorbitant visas fees must be deprecated and discouraged by the Nigerian Government.

According to my friend, all intending students for masters degree to the US were denied their visas this morning. Not even one was issued a visa. This is the height of visa discrimination and something must be done to remedy the situation. Nigerians cannot continue to waste their hard earned money to apply for visa that has already been denied by fiat of the authorities at the State Department(Foggy Bottom). We need clarity and honesty on this visa issue from US authorities. Enough is Enough. angry angry angry angry angry angry

Mods, do the needful, please.
i live in the US. I dont know what peoples intent are but just fyi many but not all Nigerians abuse visas by overstaying....go to atlanta n see how many nigerians are there on temp visa....

Ask yourself why Nigerians are not being granted asylum abroad. Even Maiduguri where Boko Haram is present there are still many local governments within the state where they have never and can't enter, hence life still continues for many living there. Talk less of you living far distance away. The reason why most of you seek relocation is not Herdsmen or Boko Haram issue, no one will believe that lie, it's economic migration. The belief that money is to be picked on the streets abroad. Well good luck, hopefully you get your visa and start life there but quit using Nigeria as an excuse, that's why you won't be granted asylum based on that.
I have no business with asylum being granted or not. If you read my post carefully.... you will understand my point about complaining of life in Germany as against Nigeria. and FYI i am not seeking relocation.

Abroad is overhyped. Most of my family members are in USA and Germany. They are not really better than those back in Nigeria. The major difference is just cold sad
If you have capital, Nigeria can be fun especially living outside Lagos (sorry Lagosians)
This is funny.......... the Nigeria i know is over hyped. Money is not everything... even with money, there is insecurity, kidnappings, armed robbery, fear of unknown travelling at night, herdsmen slaughter, corrupt politicians, bureaucracy and bribery to do govt jobs, excess use of force by security personnel. That's not 2 say abroad doesn't have its own issues but bad is forever better than worse.

@Nig4greatness

You've started misleading people and using rhetoric. You need to stop lying to yourself. You asked "Is US definition of slum different from that of Nigeria?". Good Lord, are you kidding me? When you say vaguely, "there are slums too in the U.S". An uninformed person thinks you're talking about a place that has people with no food, water, phones, electricity, accessible roads, houses, access to schools, healthcare, or diseases everywhere, uneducated people who seem doomed forever. Put things into context and stop deceiving yourself.

We can say "the president is a disgrace, he's not fit to be in that office" about Nigeria and the U.S., does this mean Trump and Buhari are on the same level and equal? Put things into context, please. I can say "go to Dallas and see bad roads" and someone would think I'm talking about the same horror in Nigeria.

Stop comparing Nigeria to the U.S. when it comes to development or standard of living. They are light years apart. I don't care if you've been to all the cities in the U.S., you need to stop misleading people and deceiving yourself. "Some inner cities are worse than hell" lol. Smh. Let a woman in those inner cities call 911 and tell them her husband was with a knife and threatening to stab her to death and watch what's gonna happen.

You said: "I'm a Nigerian first before any other nationality and I won't trash the formal for the latter just because am frustrated". Nobody is trashing Nigeria, sir/ma. The truth is the truth, Nigeria is nowhere close to the U.S., Canada or the U.K. It's ignorant to even think that.

We talk about people's decisions to stay in Nigeria or travel abroad based on what they want/like, let's leave it at that. A person would tell you: "no food can taste better than my mother's". Best thing is to smile, and leave them.
very intelligent..........Nice writeup

1) Be humble and prudent in your expenses. Start off with things simple and affordable like a cheaper phone instead of flashy expensive phones, Walk or get a monthly bus pass/ train pass until you can afford a car, insurance, gas and maintenance. look out for discount sales/ On sale items instead of buying stuff at expensive amount. Avoid breaking the Law...e.g. over-speeding, dumping garbage on roads etc. Be prayerful trust in GOD. don't let obodo life push u farther away from God.

ken4jj:

This is a long write up but it is very good to read for people who always compare Nigeria to the western countries

The problem with Nigeria is our mentality. An average Nigerian is all about money, money, houses, SUV etc and this is why this question is always coming up. Because of our greed and our ability to acquire, acquire and acquire, our society have been built on storing money, properties. It is not surprising to see Nigerians in Nigeria with fat bank account, many houses with high fence and big gate, high SUV yet the street they live is littered with bad roads and full of generator noise because that is what we care about.

The western world is different because they are not built for people to store money. Their system is designed for money to circulate. This is why even services we pay peanuts for here is Nigeria is costly abroad. Everyone is given the opportunity to live a base life and if you want to be rich you can use your brain and do something extraordinary. For example, a barber, cleaner, nanny etc in the western world has the opportunity to live a normal life. He can save a little money, make a little down payment and buy a house or car on mortgage despite being just a barber. He gets to enjoy his tokunbo car and 2 bedroom apartment even though he is paying for it in the next 10 years. Even if he dies before he finish paying, he cannot say that he didn’t enjoy the basic things of life. Enjoying the basic things of life is not left for the rich alone.
In Nigeria, some people can never enjoy the basic things of life forever. For example, a cleaner, nanny etc can never buy a car because Nigeria is designed for the rich to exploit the poor and there is no buffer to help the poor.

A top bank manager earning more than 1 million naira a month cannot bring out 50k to pay a Nanny or gateman. Instead he will go and bring one Ekaite from the village whom he will exploit as slave. Ekaite will do all the jobs in the house and will not even go to school for the first 3 years. After 3 years, they will now send her to a local school where children sit on the floor even though their own children are going to posh schools. During Christmas, they give Ekaite’s family a bag of rice and 20k and the family is happy due to poverty. But this same man store millions of naira in his account and building lots of houses yet his gateman is just paid 10k a month. In the western world, the bank manager will have over 60% of his earnings go into the payment of other services. That means he will pay the Nanny, guards, gardeners, cleaners, barber etc that works for him an hourly minimum wage. So he has little money to save and build mansions here and there but the good thing is that the people in the lower cadre live a normal life off him and the money circulates.

The Nigerian society is built for exploitation unlike the western world. The greatest disservice to poor man in Nigeria is that they are not paid hourly. The rich man/organizations takes all their time and pay them pea nut at the end of the month but a poor man aboard can work 24 hours and be paid for those 24 hours if he has the strength.

So before you travel, you need to understand how the western society works and what exactly you want. If your aim is to make millions and become rich, build houses here and there, the western society is not for you, you can become rich easier in Nigeria. It is only in Nigeria, you can become rich overnight.
You can go to china, import some substandard goods into the country, bribe SON and customs and sell your goods and make mega millions in a jiffy and build your mansions here and there. If you run a business, you can avoid paying taxes, just tip the FIRS and they would look the other way and you take those taxes you should have paid and build mansions for yourself, you are rich! The FIRS,Custom, SON guys make mega money and build their own mansions, you make your own mega money too, the ordinary people and the government are shortchanged but the govt is not bothered because they loot their own from crude oil directly. In fact, Nigeria is a goldmine if you have the mind and can throw away your conscience. Dem no born you well to not pay your taxes in the western world or do anyhow in the western world.

If you work in many organizations, you may not have to touch your salary because you will be getting illegal cash every day. For example, if you work in immigration, you will be getting 3k, 4k from people who want to get their passport else they may have to wait for one year to get it. If you work in universities, you will be getting extra 3k, 4k, 2k from people who wants their transcripts else they will look for your results for the next one year and so many examples. If you add up this monies, you can see that you are getting more than your salary from your little office. No wonder these civil servants you see have a lot of money. This is what you can never get abroad.

So you can see that it is easy to make it in Nigeria but it comes at a cost. A country where nothing works. No light, no water, bad roads, bad schools, hospitals, insecurity etc. There is no fine house in Nigeria that does not have a high fence and a big gate. In the western world, you would hardly see a fenced house because the police is 2 minutes away from your phone call.

So our mentality is different from the western world. While the western world cares more about the larger society, we care about our individual self and individual wealth and this is why we are richer individually than them but they are richer and better collectively as a society than us. The question you should ask before you travel is what you value more as an individual.
you're very smart.....good write up

the way transparentcalifornia.com works is that it shows you salary per year from the highest to the lowest, the highest earners are in the peak of their careers,so most are old people with lot of experience and advanced qualifications.

it is a similar system every where in the world, the higher you grow in age and the more experience you get the more your salary increases

the most lucrative sectors for high income if young is in investment banking on wall street and young, topnotch programmers who graduated from an elite school like mit or stanford.

There are 0.001% of nigerians working in investment banking on wall street and a programmer on SV.these positions target most whites and asians.

Funny enough, there are lot of Nigerians on transparentcalifornia.com salaries that are not up to par or similar with a civil servant per annul pay in naija, those Nigerians would have been better off in Naija.

Also, most immigrant Nigerians study in a community college or have a 2 year degree so they get low salary or live in a low income school meaning bad education for their children and less opportunity.

the people that enjoy the system with student loans and most times they study hard are the second generation(immigrant children) those one if they study hard or get good grade in college are always given full or partial scholarship to ivy league school or a top tier school.and these people among Nigerians immigrant are few.

i was in the states for a year for an exchange programme from my university and worked on the side during summer break in a resort facility...so I know how u sa works better than you....lmao

LaNiger:
As a Nigerian in America, I've been reading all the respective comments on this thread and it's been quite entertaining. I'll like to add the following comments to the thread. Not every Nigerian is hustling in America; if you come here and go to school, you are bound to succeed. Education accelerates your earning potential. The key difference between Nigeria and the USA is how we treat one another and how are respective employers treat us. Decency is word, that is absent from our dictionary in Nigeria. Companies treat their employees with disdain and employees treat their employers with disdain. Don't get me wrong, it's not perfect in America, but there is a strong ethical culture (it does not work all the time, it works very well at least 90% ~ 95%) of the time.

I was recruited from business school by a Fortune 100 company, before graduating (6 months before). As part of the interview process I met with the CEO/Chairman of that company for an hour, this is a company with over $40 billion dollars in annual revenue. I was accepted to the company's executive training program, which until last year I was the only black man in that program. I am one of the Senior executives in one of our $1 billion divisions and the only black man and most senior minority. I don't come from a wealthy family in Nigeria, to the contrary I was able to take advantage of the opportunities before me.

Today I manage a team of people with MBA's from some of the best business schools in the world. This past month, I promoted a young man on my team who is barely 27. Five years out of the University he is easily making over $100K per annum and this does not include his annual bonus. Can this happen in Nigeria? He came to me earlier this year and said, Sir I would like to pursue my MBA and it costs $80K, can the company sponsor me? I said absolutely, I will pay for your MBA from my departments budget, because I know that we are investing in him. This is the way great companies in America operate. I recently hired an entry level analyst, I tried very hard to look for a minority to hire, but did not get any resumes. The entry level job, fresh out of the university is $60K per annum, no Nigerian makes this straight out of the university.

The arguments we are having here don't make any sense, because we are not comparing apples to apples. Nigeria has potential, but it not yet the USA. To end, let's not talk about salaries, let's talk about bonuses where people are paid annual bonuses exceeding $200K per annum in addition to their salaries. We need to elevate our discuss and say how can our country Nigeria do better. This is my personal experience and I hope it encourages someone out there.
