Hey š¤
1. If you are applying for PhD don't proceed with the Visa process unless you can prove to the VO that you have absolute more than enough funds to cover your whole expenses even far beyond your graduating year because if you budgeted $60,000 for 5 years your PhD can last 10 years, Hence, funding is absolutely compulsory for PhD applicants.
2. If you are applying for Bsc or Msc funding or scholarships is not compulsory providing that you can prove availability of funds to cover your tuition and miscellaneous expenses all through your studentship In the USA.

Hey š¤
1. Quote the duration on your Form I 20 my friend . That Form I-20 is even important than your F1 visa (if granted) because you can keep going as an international student in the USA with valid Form I 20 but with an expired student visa.
2. How do you mean that you don't want to spend more than 5 years on the program ? Are you part of the senate of the school or staff professors ? If your present admission is for PhD you can even spend 10 years (God forbid for you) . PhD programs has the highest student drop-outs of all degree categories (Bsc, Msc,Phd) in academics.
3. Even if your I 20 says 10 years, you should be happy and follow the date because majority of you will want to stay behind after study and that I 20 will keep you going after the expiration of your visa. ** However, you can graduate before the date quoted on your Form I 20 or Admision letter . This should not even be your worry. Focus on how to secure your visa.
Best Wishes š Thanks bro. You're always on point with your response to issues on this thread. I love you 1 Like |

Happy Sunday to you all.
Pls, I need clarity on this.
On my admission letter, my program duration is 5yrs but on my i-20, the duration is about 6yrs+.
My question is which one should I put on my DS-160? And if I put 6yrs+, will that not signal any negativity to the VO? I particularly, do not want to spend more than 5yrs on the program.
Pls, I need clarification. |

AlphaMaximus: US F1 Visa Interview Transcript
Program: PhD Chemical Engineering, University of Notre Dame (Fully-funded)
Date: March-20-2024
Venue: US Consulate in Lagos
Outcome: Visa Approved ā
Dialogue
VO: Window 3, white man with glasses and white earphones
VO: reading my I-20 I see that you're going to The University of Notre Dame du Lac (full name of University of Notre Dame) and you'll be pursuing a PhD in Chemical Engineering. And you're also fully-funded! Wow! It seems all the big brains came today! Great!
Me: cracks a smile
VO: So tell me about your research.
Me: Alright. For this PhD degree, my research will be focusing on computational catalysis....
VO: cuts in and squints eyes in curiosity Catalysis? What's that?
Me: Alright. So catalysis is the use of special substances called catalysts to expedite the rate of chemical or industrial processes and also a means of reducing their energy expenditure. This research is relevant because as a process manager at The Heineken Company, we have challenges with reducing our energy expenditure and carbon dioxide emissions.
These challenges are largely due to a technical knowledge gap not just in The Heineken Company, but in Nigeria at large. Therefore, this PhD degree will imbue me with the technical expertise I need to take on a senior process management role in energy sustainability at The Heineken Company when I return to Nigeria (return fire).
VO: That's fantastic work! Do you have a bachelor's degree sir? (Sir bawo?)
Me: Yes. I have a first-class in Petroleum and Gas Engineering from The University of Lagos.
VO: Okay. So tell me sir, focuses gaze on me, have you ever applied for a student visa?
Me: Yes, I applied for a student visa in 2020 but I did not attend the interview.
VO: VO aggressively types and scrolls through his screen while silently complaining about the network Alriiiiiighttt. VO continues this aggressive action on his laptop for 1 minute
VO: Congratulations sir. reaches for the white paper of salvation This explains bla bla bla, your i20 is like a part of your visa, bla bla bla. It sounds like you're going on to do incredible work in The United States. I wish you the best.
Me: Thank you.
Fall 2024 is a go!š
Congratulations š. I tap into this |

Hey š¤
1. In Top-10 Ties proving ratings at the USA embassies , Family Tie (nuclear family especially) should come number 1, and your wife (not the children) back home is a major factor because she is the love of your life (according to western ideas).
2. Naturally , the consular / immigration staffs gets very jumpy about allowing people in that are a potential drain on resources, they might consider that if you have no connection to return to your country in effect , you are using your study in the US as an Immigration path.
3. Even , if you have broken the records of the highest PhD scholarships offer in the world , the USA embassy can still deny your visa in a twinkle of an eye . I would rather you applied alone and leave family behind first .
4. But in answer to your questions , if your wife is standing on your neck to travel with you by all means , well she is a legal dependent , therefore go ahead and apply with her , you have a very good Scholarship offer that can cover her ..But personally i won't take that decision .
Best Wishes š Thank you. I will yield to your advice. |

Hello,
Please I need your sincere advice on my case. I'm a newly admitted PhD student. I've 100% funding and Assistantship. On my New Student Information Form (the form is to be used to generate my i-20), I've an excess of $9564 of funding. Meanwhile, POF per dependant for my school is $7k. I've the opportunity to use my excess funding to sponsor a dependant and I'm thinking of including my wife as a dependant on F2 visa.
My fear, however is that I've three children and a foster daughter. They are not going with us, atleast for now.
My Question: Will my situation be favourable given that my children will be back home? I need your inputs and sincere opinions. Thank you. |

Hi everyone,
I'm new here. I got a fully funded Ph.D admission at the University of Rochester. I'm at the stage of requesting for I-20, and apply for Visa. But the waiting time I checked on the US embassy website showed 134days. This is extremely late for me as my resumption date is August. In fact, I can't raise the visa and SEVIS fees until April ending. Pls, how do I go about this.
Also, do I need to secure accommodation in my school before filling out the i-160?
Lastly, must I have any specific amount in my account as PoF? I will also appreciate if I can join any US F1 visa group. Thank you for your anticipated responses |

kettykin: Now that yorubas claim Lagos belongs to yorubas, the FG should do the following .
The relocation of all the oil and gas companies back to niger delta which was relocated to Lagos using a military decree 6 towards the end of the Civil War.
The mandatory movement of consular houses to other areas and parts of the country as is obtainable in other western countries.
The movement or split of the federal government bodies ,Non ministerial departments like NIMASA NMA etc to all parts of the country as this would stop igbos coming to Lagos for different import related permits.
The removal of sea ports from the exclusive list of the Constitution, infant the removal of everything in the exclusive list to give other parts of the country some leverage to open up their maritime economy.
The opening up of the telecommunications space such that the east does not need to gets its internet from Lagos
The rights to states to impose tariff on goods not manufactured in their regions or states.

Culture / Re: Relationship Between Yoruba Language And Igala Language. by linsa01(m): 5:15pm On Aug 18, 2022 |
scholes0: @OP look at it this way, the closeness btw the aboriginal Igalas (Akpoto) & Yoruba is ancestral. A result of both groups descending from the same ancestors in deep prehistory that is soo old that nobody recorded it. The relationship between Igala & Igbo you friend talks about is as a result of geographical closeness/inter-relationship along border areas & some culture rubbing off each other. There r even igalas in today's SE. So actually, depending on the Igala u ask, there are varying degrees of closeness with neighbors. Some Igalas will tell u they r closest to Agatu/Idoma, some will tell u it is Bassa-Nge/Nupe. These are all location induced relatedness.
Igala looks like heavily modified archaic Yoruba.
Many of the words are the same. For those that are not exactly the same, I observed the following changes/modifications.
1) I noticed keenly that they have evolved to replace nasal vowel (AƱ, EƱ, IƱ, OƱ, UƱ Etc) endings in Yoruba with their open oral vowel equivalents. Because Yoruba has 7 oral and 7 nasal vowels... but seems Igala has only oral ones.
* And also some consonant mutation in Igala , i.e (R to L), (L to N), (J to BĆæ), (S to R/L) etc.... Here are some RULES:
Rule A*: Nasal vowel ending words in Yoruba to open vowel ending in Igala. Middle diphthong eliminated when present JeuƱ (eat) - JeƱwu IgbiƱ (snail) - Igbi OhuƱ (thing) - EƱwu EyiƱ (tooth) - EƱyi į»kuƱ (illipede) - į»kį» EguƱ (ancestors) - Egwu OguƱ (medicine) - Ogwu FuƱfuƱ (white) - Fufu FaƱ (blow) - Fa AgaƱ (barren) - Aga KaƱ (sour) - Ka OkaƱ (one) - Oka OduƱ (year) - Odo AgbaƱ (chin) - Agba OuƱ (he/she/it) - OƱwu OfuƱ (throat) - Ofa OyaƱ (breats) - EƱya IdiƱ (maggot) - Ide EkuƱ (leopard) - Eko TituƱ (new) - Tito
Rule B* Consonant mutation R to L and vice versa Kekere (small) - Kekele Irawo (star) - Ilawo Iri (dew/mist) - eli Olu (lord) - Onu Ro (cultivate) - Lo Olamide (name) - Uramide Iru (seed) - ilu Akere (toad) - Akele Ra (buy) - La Erira (ants) - Elila Ri (see) - Li Ora (fat) - Ula OruƱgbe (thirst) - Olugbe
Rule C* Consonant mutation S to R/L Ese (leg) - Ere Eso (fruit) - Ero Se (block) - Re SĆø (throw) - RĆø
Rule D* Consonant mutation S and SH to CH It seems like the āShā sound in absent in some Igala dialects , and they replace with a 'CH'... These dialects that lack the the SH sound seem to have become the standard for the whole of Igala.
Sheyi (done this) - Cheyi Oshu (moon) - Ochu Ishu (yam) - Uchu Ashe (authority) - Ache Isha (pot) - Ucha Shu (defecate) - Chu
Rule E* Consonant mutation J to BÅø Aja (dog) - Abya Eje (seven) - Ebye įŗøjÉ (blood) - įŗøbyÉ
Rule F* Consonant mutation W to GW just like in the South-Eastern Yorubaland dialects Ewa (beans) - Egwa Ku (die) - Kwu Gun (pound) - Gwu Ekun (cry) - Ekwu Oogun (sweat) - Uugwu WÉ (wash/bath) - GwÉ
Rule G*: Consonant mutation L to N Oluku (friend) - Onukwu Ile/Ale (land) - Ane Ale (night) - Ane Ala (dream) - Ona Ola (tomorrow) - Ona
Rule A* + B* EriƱ (four)- Ele OruƱ (neck) - Olu IruƱ (hair) - Ilo AruƱ (five) - Alu OruƱ (sun) - Olu Eruru (ashes) - Elulu
Rule A* + C* EsaƱ (nine) - Ela SuƱ (sleep) - Lu
Rule A* +D* EshiƱshiƱ (housefly) - Achichi
Rule A* + F* EgunguƱ (bone) - Ogwugwu IguƱnu (vulture) - Ugwunu OguƱ (twenty) - Ogwu
Rule A* +G* OlokuƱriƱ (man) - Onokele OlobiƱriÅ (woman) - Onobule
Rule B* + C* Sure (run/hasten) - Rule
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Other Minor differencess with irregular rules Bayii (like this) - Abayii ĆbÉ (soup) - ĆbĆø Owo/Ogho (money) - Oko Wo/Gho (look) - Go Ijo (dance) - Ido Monamona (lightening) - OmamaƱya Oru (midnight) - Odu Iwowo (nudity) - Owowo Eru (slave) -Adu Ehoro (rabbit) - Efolo Adiye (hen) - Ajuwe Akuko (coc.k) - Ayiko
And finally,False friend cognates Yo in Yoruba = Fully fed Yo in Igala = Plump / Fat
Du in Yoruba - To contest an object Du in Igala - To take an object
OyuƱ in Yoruba = Pregnancy Oyu in Igala = Fat
Ebo in Yoruba - Sacrifice Ebo in Igala - Deity
EdĆø in Yoruba = Liver EdĆø in Igala = Heart/Chest
Wewe in Yoruba = Pieces Uwewe in igala = Many
ilÉ in Yoruba = Earth (as in land) ilÉ in Igala = Earth (as in the planet)
There are many countless words that are exactly the same in both languages and need no further elucidation, since we are focusing more on what has made the two languages different over time. That being said, there are many other words too that are very different... Hence the reason why Igala shares approximately only about 64% or so word cognates with the General Yoruba we speak. The 40% that do not align between both is already enough to make inter-comprehension between both very hard... The biggest chunk of non Yoruboid words in Igala is from the neighbouring Idoma according to some research.
With this, I would give a Yoruba - give or take 6 months to master this language under complete exposure like going to live in Idah or Dekina.
Yoruba is Igala Pro Max. Once you master the grammatical rule of thumb in the formula required to convert from one dialect gloss to the other gloss ... you will master the language sharply. Are you a linguist? 2 Likes |
