UncleJudax: No, but I did NYSC there at Jos North. I still miss the place billiondd: Yes it is at LMU. Perhaps you didn't notice the part where I mentioned this . Your grade is exactly 2.5 on the German scale. This should be enough for the program. The program is however very mathematical and theoretical. We do not focus on exploration (oil, gas) but on mantle convection, earthquakes, ruptures, Geodynamo etc. I'd say that with hard work it is possible to do well in the program since I also studied Electrical engineering at Unilag before switching to geophysics in this MSc. I hope you already applied coz I guess the app period is over now. Anyways you can check the webpage for more info. All the best biglord: IT is a big thing here. I've met many foreigners at bars and one common job amongst them is IT. People work in a range of companies from start-ups to big companies. I've met people at Cisco, Microsoft, Adobe and a few other companies. It seems that German isn't always needed in the IT jobs but I don't know the reason why. If you want to do IT here, I think it's very possible and perhaps you would have an advantage if you speak German. It's always an advantage . I'm not an IT person so I can't say more than this but trust me that the prospects for IT are very good 3 Likes |

I guess I can speak a little about life in Germany (at least Munich) since I've been here since October. I will make a few headings and speak about them and if anyone wants to know something specific they can ask here and not my inbox so that others will benefit: 1)Education: The study has been fantastic. I'm doing the Geophysics masters at LMU and the professors are very smart. Our math professor at the institute is just 28 years old with his PhD from France. The computing facilities are top notch and the professors have very well cited papers. Examinations are quite tough so you have to brace up when coming here and the grading is also different from Naija. To score a 1.0 here you need 95% and above. In general anything above 2.5 is considered good especially if an institute is doing high quality research. 2) Housing: This is always a big challenge especially for newcomers. Living in the center can be quite expensive but if one is lucky, you can get a cheap place in the center or even if you live out of the center, the U-Bahn and S-Bahn are there to transport you. I advise to check the distance between an apartment and your class before moving in. In any case, read your rental contract before you sign. You are normally allowed to leave an apartment with a 3-month notice. However ensure that your landlord hasn't put any clause that states that you have to stay a minimum number of months. Such a clause is known as "Kündigungsverzicht" which means termination clause. If you are lucky you can also get the Studentenwerk housing; they are cheap, with many students and there's never a dull moment. I suggest that people coming over should bring some extra money in case you have to stay in a youth hostel for a month or so. 3)Transport: The semester ticket covers transport within the city. I don't know if this applies to every single state but here in Bavaria and also in Baden-Wurttemberg it does. It costs us around 150€ and it lasts the whole semester; for example my semester ticket for this semester starts on April 1 and ends by September 30. You can ride all regular forms of transport(bus, train, tram etc) except for high speed trains like the ICE or special purpose buses or trains (you don't need those mostly anyways except you want to travel to another state or country). Also since you may have to buy this ticket once you arrive I suggest you budget some money for this. 4) Student job: It's very possible to get jobs here will studying. I don't know much about hustling but some others on this thread can help with that. However I suggest that once you get here, approach your professors to ask for a HiWi (student assistant) job. The hours are flexible and the pay is fair. Some of my classmates started HiWi's immediately and earned a lot. With a HiWi your can work and learn simultaneously. You can also ask for a job at a bar or as a Au Pair(to take care of a family's kids). In any case my personal suggestion is that don't start to hustle once you get here. The study is very intensive and the gradings are tough so it may be good to focus on the first semester and maybe start to hustle from the holidays. In this case you have to start looking for a job before exam starts so that you can start immediately after exam. 5) People: I've enjoyed every moment here and I look forward to the remaining time. People are mostly nice and are happy to show you the way. Talk to people and be nice and you'll meet many lovely people. If you drink beer then it's a nice way to meet new people. My classmates regularly organise drink nights. If you like clubs you can also enjoy here. There is hardly any violence in the clubs unlike some Naija clubs. I remember a club in Jos where the bouncer almost killed one small guy for reasons no one understood. People smoke a lot of cigarettes too and if you like the plant(erm....weed) then you can find dealers here tho it's coded since it's not allowed. 6) Food: I don't really know since I mostly eat bread, spaghetti, dodo, garri and Mensa food. The Mensa is the student canteen and you get the Mensa card to pay for your food. I don't like to cook so I can't tell you much about Naija food. If Cahnellven comes to the thread he can tell you about Naija food. Me, and Eke40seven were at his place to eat Fufu on New Year's 7) Babes: There are many tight babes here from various countries. I haven't hit any yet except for making out. If you like to cold approach women then you can get lucky. I remember cold approaching a French girl who was here on vacation but I couldn't log in coz she was returning that evening. For the babes on this thread, well, don't worry, guys will approach you(that's our job ) African people: There are many Africans here in all society levels, from workers to refugees. I visited a refugee camp and I even met Nigerians there and I wondered why there were Igbo and Yoruba refugees but e no konsyn me In general Africans often ignore each other when they walk past themselves but I think this is normal. It is part of a person's security to not smile at every African person you see simply because you are both black. Sometimes I smile and nod to African people in the train or if I think the person is responsible. 9) German Language: I suggest that you try to learn as much as possible before coming even if your study, like mine, is in English. You can live fine in big cities without German but some hustling may be impossible without German. Don't worry it's only difficult in the beginning. Die Anfänge sind in der Regel schwierig That's all for now. If there is something else anyone wants to know I can write about it. But I can't write about the visa or application process coz I'm forgetting those gradually and perhaps few things may have changed Also I know it's not easy but try not to worry about your visa or whether the fact that your name on your birth certificate ends with 'b' and in your waec certificate it ends in 'o'. The visa guys aren't problematic as long as your docs are complete. 38 Likes 4 Shares |

stevemims: Why advise him to contact the program coordinator? The instructions for applying to any program are clearly stated on the website of the program. Theflint1: Theflint1, do not be surprised if the program coordinator does one of two things: 1) Ignore your email 2) Redirect you to the link on their website stating the application requirements I think that if you really want to study here you have to be proactive about sourcing for information. Visit the programme website and read the instructions. Some people wonder about how to write a motivation letter. One of the key ingredients to writing a very strong motivation letter is to visit the programme website and read up on the research areas that they focus on and the courses that they teach. Incorporating these things into your motivatio letter is what makes it a strong letter. Bottomline: Don't waste your time writing the programme coordinator. Use that time to read up on the application requirements yourself and to prepare your documents 4 Likes |

Neyoalao: Nothing special about the journey. It was very stressful tho. Lagos-Frankfurt-Munich on Lufthansa. One important point tho for prospective travelers: put your perfunes, lotions, etc in your main luggage. Do not put them in your hand luggage(i.e. the one you take with you into the plane). This is because immigration both in Naija and Germany will check your hand luggage and will definitely confiscate these items if they are more than 100ml. So just keep them in your main luggage. I lost all my lotions and sprays in this way. Tip2: You don't even have to buy the lotions and all in Naija. They are extremely cheap here. I bought a nice shower gel, adidas body spray, hand lotion, nivea body lotion all for only 6€. Yeah come with Garri surely. That's all I remember now. I can answer specific inquiries as far as my knowledge goes 2 Likes |

michlan: Why are you waiting for admission to come out before you start learning the language? Don't you know that the German courses have fixed registration and class schedules. As a matter of fact, classes have already commenced at the Goethe Institute and registration will almost be over. If you really want to learn German then register now. Are you applying for summer semester 2016? I hope this is what you are applying for because if you are applying for this winter semester 2015 that people are already collecting visas for, then it is too late for you to make it. All the best |

So abeg google "foreigners office konstanz or wherever" and call their phone. Also mail your programme coordinator right away and tell them of this problem. They may be able to help. Lastly you never can tell: the visa email may just drop in tomorrow But CALL the FO first thing tomorrow and MAIL your PC now now. P.S. At this stage, stop thinking about rejection. Stay Positive |

Williamso: Bro, in every university there are a few departments where the lecturer-student relationship is quite poor. This isnt unique to unis in Munich so I dont get why you specify to Munich. As regards rankings, they are based on both research and quality of teaching (student teacher ratio etc). As a matter of fact, European schools are affected negatively in the rankings by the fact that the quality of bsc education delivery in the classroom is sometimes regarded as poor. As you know the European schools require a lot of independence from the students than the USA or UK schools. So don't single out a highly ranked school in Munich . No worry. .stone no go hit you 1 Like |

jagaban17: It is a really great school. I applied to the IDEA League geophysics msc of which RWTH is a partner school and I was able to get in. However from what I see on edulix, RWTH is a competitive school across all departments. I used to have a pdf doc on my laptop and in this doc I noticed that RWTH encourage applicants to take the GRE and include the scores even when not requested. So I advise that you contact the program coordinator for the automotive course amd and ask whether you can submit your GRE scores. Apart from this, you must realize that the TOEFL or IELTS are compulsory for this course (so a proficiency letter from your school doesn't cut it here). You must also produce evidence of basic german (A1 or A2 I guess) before you are allowed to write your thesis even tho the thesis would be written in English language. It is a wonderful course with a lot of prospects (considering the huge automotive space and also the aerospace work in Germany) and if I were in your shoes, I would do all from now to ensure I get in. If this is the course you want then this is not the time to start saying "I dont want to write Toefl" and other similar comments. Depending on your current plans I advise that you: 1) Establish the application opening and closing date 2) Confirm your eligibility for the course (bsc must be in mech or automobile engineering). If you are unsure about this then mail them your transcript as pdf 3) Inquire about the necessity of the GRE (if they say you can submit it then ensure you take it) 4) Definitely register for and take the TOEFL or IELTS 5) Register for the German A1 course at Goethe and proceed to A2 afterwards if time and opportunity allow. (You need the certificate to register for your third semester and it is not very easy to start learning german once your msc has started) 6) Work on your other application docs including motivation letter, transcript etc. 7) Apply to other schools also...just in case . But I hope you get in. BTW, the course can only begin in the Winter Semester. Where do you get the idea of applying this summer from 3 Likes |

sonyville: Bro, integrity in academia is taken very seriously. Once foul play is exposed, the player is severely shamed. Plagiarism and manipulation are even more serious offences. See what Uni Konstanz did to their very own Jans Hendrik Schon who manipulated data at the Bell Labs and won several awards in the process. His PHd was revoked and he was suspended from all scientific societies. That said, it is highly unlikely that schools contact your referees. This is because there are always too many applicants and the academic world is one of trust. Every researcher trusts that the other is telling the truth. So in your case, the school is highly unlikely to detect your foul play. However I advise that you talk to another lecturer who can stand in place of this one or find out exactly what the problem is with this current referee and what can be done to rectify this problem. I strongly advise against foul play. All the best 2 Likes |

tmed1: No arguments. I just dont want the highbeey guy to get confused. Places like LMU and KIT-Karlsruhe (both places I applied to) and infact all other schools insist that you submit all docs that qualified you for admission in your home country. We all know that JAMB result or A levels are part of these docs and there is no reason why one should leave the JAMB result behind when one has it. Afterall the photocopy is only 5 Naira. Anabin is the informative database but an obedient applicant should simply follow all the instructions given on his/her prospective programme's webpage. 2 Likes |

Highbeey this is my suggestion: 1)Visit www.daad.de/en and use the filters therein to narrow down a list of universities offering your course for either the winter or summer semester (whichever you prefer). You can also use google here. E.g. you can query "msc geophysics germany" and follow the search results. 2) Visit the Web pages of the programmes that you narrowed down thru step 1 3) Read up on the requirements of each individual program as stated on their web page 4) Work to gather all these required docs 5) When the docs are ready send them to the university according to the manner specified on each individual webpage. 6) Wait for your admission 7) Book your visa according to the list given to you by Kelvinpam yesterday Enter Germany and start flexing..and Jacking to oo Please refrain from asking people here about what documents you need to submit as no one can know for sure what documents your OWN programme requires. German study is unique in that each university has admission procedures that differ from those of other unis and even within the same uni, individual progeammes have different requirements: heck even in the same programme, BSc applicants must fulfil completeley different requirements from MSc applicants. So only you can help yourself with regards to the docs you have to submit and also the manner im which you have to submit them. However we here can assist you with critiquing your motivation letter or advice on what postal service you may have to use or which notary public or high court you may have to go for your certification. If you sre lucky some people here may have applied to some of the programmes you are also applying to or may even be current students there and then they will give you insider tips. It would also do you some good if you could google "uni-assist" and read up on their website. Good luck 6 Likes |

highbeey: In general that means those documents that grant you access to University in your own country. For us these include: waec certificate and jamb result (the colored print out with the jamb logo is sufficient). If you have an ND/HND/BSc result also include them all. P.S. Don't ever send originals oo..make photocopies of all your certificates and head to a notary public or to the german embassy to do the necessary certifications of these photocopies. The procedure for certification is clearly spelt out in one of the .pdf files on the embassy website Also NECO certificate works perfectly fine |
