I will not do that! Feel free to apply to only the 9 schools. Seems you're more after a school's reputation than the curriculum it has to offer. Good luck in your admissions.

And yes! The difference in quality is much. Schools outside the TU9 are more or less glorified secondary schools. I would reckon you go to AUN or Covenant, or even North American University than go to any school outside TU9.
Epic!

Career / Re: Total Oil And Gas Workers by lobito007(m): 9:35pm On Jul 09, 2016
AnakinSkywalker:

1. Most new facilities have Gas Utilization Systems in their concepts and designs. They are powered by turbines, with redundancy in power generation systems, even with Diesel Generators. For some old facilities, where possible, they make modifications and introduce gas utilization systems too. So, you can easily work in this area. However, for some facilities/Oil companies you have to come in as a contract staff as these power packages/modules/trains are handled by consultants/contractors with their staff always on board the facilities 24/7. Companies like Siemens, Phillips, GE and Rolls-Royce make these engines and have their guys on board operating and maintaining these equipment. Their focus is strictly on generating the power.

2. Oil and gas facilities run electricity 24/7. Both on the process areas and within the accommodation modules. The network of electrical systems and components require maintenance, inspections, testing, repairs and modifications (where necessary). The maintenance crew usually have electrical engineers who handle a lot in this part. So, within the electrical, instrumentation and control aspects of operations, your skills and knowledge will be of great benefits and you can work with this team.

3. Within the oil companies also, you can work with a project team to make design calculations, design decisions etc. on the power train for facilities on various fields. You will properly look at concepts based on the general concept philosophy and choose a system/design that best suits that facility based on the philosophy of the particular project and it's requirements. In the Department of Petroleum Resources for instance there is an Engineering and Standards Division. They are involved in approving engineering designs for oil companies based on stipulated Nigerian oil and gas regulations as enforced by the DPR. And they even witness construction and do factory acceptance tests on oil and gas components both home and abroad.

4. On a lighter scale you wan work within the Safety Engineering Unit (especially in a company like Total that sensibly separates safety engineering from general HSE admin.). The general HSE guys do work permit stuff, accident reporting and all that. I am not saying they are not important. However, the Safety Engineering guys take it up very many notches. They work on equipment design and modifications based on pre-established safety concepts. Whenever a modification, upgrade or new equipment is being planned, they participate in the quantitative risk assessment. In Shell, they have a loss prevention team too that does stuff similar to this. This safety engineering team is usually made up of many manner of Engineers required in the oil and gas industry e.g Process,Structural/Civil, Electrical, Chemical, Mechanical,Instrumentation, Petroleum and Safety Engineers. You can easily fit in here.

The first scenario is however, your place of best fit.
My! What can I say! It's been like a long time since I posted this, yet, you took time to give this concise, professional and satisfactory response. I kept nodding as I read. My curiosity tank on the subject finally became full. I could not ask for more. You provided the answer in a manner such as I had not found anywhere else. Thank you for your selflessness. I am exceedingly grateful.

PS: I have been offered admission at Technical University of Munich to study Power Engineering, beginning this October. I have been further fired up by the career prospects you have listed.

If I may add, can I also take up a role in operation and maintenance of rotating equipment, compressors, pumps, valves, amongst others?

You've. got a brilliant GPA too.. Are u also a GRE aspirant?
Yes I converted already.... I only have my level 100-300 level result ready.. Like I said i 'd finish next year April... I hope for to finish well and strong as I really want to skip my MSC and do my PhD in Economic or international Economic.. I already have most of the Gre materials ad almost done with Barron quantitative , with my everyday preparation I want to write June ...Pls advice me as I'm considering Kansas State University with funding ....So help me God.....Advice me BIKO
Yeah, kansas is good. However, you should aim for even higher-ranking schools. With a tight GRE score of say, 330, which I think you can achieve, considering that you have started studying already ahead of next june, you can dare to apply to harvard, yale and stanford.

Oh great!! I didn't know they have changed their off campus rules. In that case, their work permit is just as par with Germany and given the fact that there is no language barrier, once stands a better chance of getting better and less laborious work. Am I right?
Is it possible for one to also fund ones school fees, feeding, housing and other expenses solely from the money made working?

I will like to get your inputs..

Its inevitable. SAIT makes it compulsory.

The evaluation might be through WES. They have all the details on there website.

Hope this helps.
Thanks. Yeah, it does. If I may ask you more, please. I currently work in the power sector. Will going for petroleum engineering deny me visa? Also, my firm does not issue study leave, but from what I have read, it appears this is a requirement for visa. Does this eliminate any chance I have for a study visa?

In my opinion, it depends on what you want.
Study wise, Germany have arguably the best package for international students, great schools, ridiculously cheap transportation and housing arrangements for students, wonderful health insurance package (if you are under 30), by far better work/study permit than Canada.
However, the only advantage Canada will have over Germany is the non language barrier. Nothing else.
If you can deal with that and the challenges that it comes with then you are good to go.

If you have the cash and won't mind the great limitations Canada places on international students to work while studying and probably are sure of getting that amount every year from home without hassles then Canada will be easier for integration purposes because of the language. But your Canadian course though, Rural Dev. embarassed how you take find am?
Canada and Germany's post study stay incentives are fairly at par.
You see I didn't mention Luxembourg. That's a business country, quite rich and expensive. I don't know anything about their package for international student, so I can't comment knowledgeably.
What restriction does Canada place on international students while studying? I am aware they allow you to work 20 hours/week and unlimited hours during holidays.

Bro, pursue Canada with light, candle and anointing oil smiley Canada is the way forward! Luxembourg run far from that country it's ridiculously expensive.
This is in no attempt to dispute your claim about Canada, but I wonder what makes a lot of people excited about it. US, I think, is a far better destination. US offers better prospects. There are not many famous companies that began in ca. Currency is even inferior to the usd. Is the canadia dollar widely acceptable and outaide of canada? Make I just hold.

Ehya Sorry about that... I got admission to SDSM&T and SIT both 4 MS Mechanical Engineering. I applied to just 3schools anyways. However, the both admission had no funding or assistantship attached to it. Major reason is dat their assistantship are reserved primarily for PhD students. I did contact faculty members b4 n after my admission n der reasons were either paucity of funds or preference 4 phd. I intend to defer d admission and in the process continue to speak with faculty members while applying to other schools too. I might also consider applying 4 phd too since SirRiddy highlighting dat 1 can get admit 4 phd n run away after msc (lol, dey think dey are smart abi tongue)...

I will also like to thank SirRiddy 4 his selfless contributions in dis group. I remember wen I stumble @ dis thread about dis time last year, he was my 1st point of contact, m happy for what he's achieved.

N oga lobito007 thanks 4 always keeping in touch, thanks to all dos that we communicate on whatsapp n via mails. N to everyone here 4 ur comments n contributions, like sirRiddy n oga DanjaNinja we'll have our stories to tell pretty soon.
My! Hard guys! Studying in a US school without funding is not an option abeg. On the PhD trick, so you get awarded an MSc certificate on the path to PhD? Do you get this MSc cert before you complete your PhD study?
Even after getting the admission, one still faces a difficult decision quitting a regular paid job for MS study. Talk about uncertainty of choices.

@nineteenth, people make sacrifices for their dreams. The prospects of having a better life as a graduate of a German university is high. What is 90k and danfo? If you have been earning 90k for 3yrs now ,I can boldly tell you that the value of your salary is now around 45k. The things you could buy for 20k last 2yrs will cost around 40k nw.

For some this German dream is just a " let me try thing" for others it's a major step to their futures. If it is worth it or not is based on your vision. For people who have a strong plan, quitting a job or selling a property is a must pay price. You would be amazed if you know what many have done to raise blocked account cash. I know a guy who was working for a petroleum company and earning well. Before he got his job he had this German dream, so he worked and saved for 3yrs. After 3yrs, he quitted his relatively high paying job and left for Germany( many would never try that).Today, He is not regretting it one bit.

I will never make a decision for you. Weigh your options, analyse and decide.
Since you have an admission, you are one leg in.

YOU ARE A MAN. MAKE YOUR DECISION AND BE RESONSIBLE FOR YOUR ACTIONS. wink

Team Winter.

Bro, I am not gay, but I just fell in love with you for this. I am in a similar situation to this petroleum guy you cited. 95% of peeps with my kind of job and life right now will not quit for a study abroad. But it's all about ambition and vision. #TeamWinter here too for TUMunich. What's your destination?

which other light do you need again nitori oloun eh?! you have a job paying you 90K per month and a bus bringing in money too. you want to live all that to do student mini Jobs here? eh taking care of dogs, cats, washing plates, cleaning, factory hand, baby sitter, etc Kai!! How fluent are you in German? That's the first step? there is rising incidences of people jumping in front of moving trains out of frustration. Nowhere is perfect!
And is he going to do these all his life? What of the opportunities the education acquired will open to him? I think this is about making short-term sacrifices for long-term gains. I am in a similar situation, in fact, I earn substantially more than what this guy does. I drive an SUV too. Generally, I would say I am doing fine. In spite of all these, I will be quitting my job to study in a world-class university in this same Germany. Not an easy decision to make. In fact, I keep thinking of deferring till next year or even cancelling it and just do my MSc here in naija. But then, I ask myself, 'after the programme abroad, will I be better off ?' I always answer in the affirmative. Average take-home salary of an MSc holder in Germany is €2500. At an exchange rate of 400 Naira to 1€, that's N1m. Except you work for an oil company, you will have to be a manager with 15+ years of experience to earn that much here. More so, with your German MSc, plus, say 3 years of work experience in a German firm, do you know what you can command in monthly salary here in Nigeria. If you never leave your comfort zone, then you will never know how many opportunities are out there waiting to be grabbed. One only needs to take that bold step. You may be doing well now, but ask yourself, 'can I do better than this?' if your answer is 'yes', then go for it.
