emmatok: Were did you get that from, your Japanese GF, LOL.

Budhhists are religious people and every other thing(believe,deities,incarnation.e.t.c) follows.

Not all cultures can be separated from religion.
You can google "buddhism and atheism" and find out for yourself that buddhism is generally atheist or you can choose to be ignorant.

It is a fact that 64% of Japanese do not believe in God. My question asks "where is God in our everyday life?". You can keep arguing with hard evidence that Japan is not an atheist country.

emmatok: Atheism has noting to do with religion and cultural practise.
What an idiotic thing to say. Culture permeates all beliefs or disbelief. Everyone has a culture. Even atheists have cultures. I do christmas shopping during christmas, does that make me a christian? No, it just the culture in Western Countries.
Christianity EtcRe: Where Is God In Our Everyday Lives? by logicboy(op): 2:41pm On Apr 12, 2012
emmatok: USE your Logic,MR Logic.

How can you say Atheism is present in buddhism, when buddhism is a religion.

Japanese might be a free religion state, but they culturally Shintos and Buddists.

And most of them practise and observe it.

Atheism has noting to do with religion and cultural practise.
You keep failing;

1) Culture can be separate different from religion.
2) 64% say there is no God. There is no gettting around that fact. That is athesism. Atheism is simply the disbelief in god(s)
3) It is common knowledge that there exists atheism in buddhism. Budhhists do not generally believe in spirits or a god.
Christianity EtcRe: Where Is God In Our Everyday Lives? by logicboy(op): 2:14pm On Apr 12, 2012
emmatok: Japan is a Shintoist nation with lots of Buddhism notably Zen.

What is your point?

Fact remains that 64% of Japanese say that there is no god. Atheism is even present in buddhism but someone like you wouldnt know

brainchild78: Furthermore, why should an Athiest delve into futile arguments of the existence of heavan & hell & the means by one gains entrance in any. As you don't believe in this then you should not bother arguing about it and going living your life until you meet your abrupt end.
1) I'm an ex-catholic turned atheist
2) You ask why I waste my time arguing about the existence of god when I dont believe in him. I don't care about god? I worry about the people that believe in him and commit atrocities in gods name. Have you been almost killed by a religious person? I have.
3) Answer the question of the topic. Are you going to condemn your ancestors to hell by saying tht the only way to heaven is through Jesus?

9)Canada- 14% atheist
10)Norway- 17% atheist (Phil Zuckerman, an Associate Professor of Sociology at Pitzer College estimates atheism rates in Norway as ranging from 31 to 72%)

Bottom 12;

Nigeria- (12th from behind) 2% irreligous, less than 1% atheist
Libya- 12% irreligious
Central African republic- 1% irreligious
Isreal- 54% irreligious

Christians believe that the only way to heaven is through Jesus christ.

John 14:6
King James Version (KJV)
6Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

The problem with this belief is that as a Nigerian, you have condemned all your ancestors from the 16th century, who wefre not christians to hell.

Furthermore, if you believe that Jesus is the only way to heaven, these are the following people you have condemned to hell;

-Ghandi (Hinduist) <Ghandi was a saint to his people and a symbol for peace all around the world>
-Bill Gates (Agnostic) <Bill Gates funds numerous charities and is using science to tackle malaria in Africa> <If you are reading this, ur using one of his products>

Callotti: Bad mouth causes hate!
Religion can be used as the excuse to spread hate by saying it is 'God's word'!
Any derogatory terms used to deprive others of their basic rights ARE HATEFUL TERMS.

Sodomites have rights to 'sodomize' themselves.
If you infringe upon their rights to sodomize themselves in the azzzes. . . you are invading their privacies.
In defending their own rights. . . they may turn against you and insult your own religion.

Bad mouth=Hate Speech=Violence. DOMINO EFFECT!

Bottom line?

Mind your business.
Not God's business!
Agreed 100%

You are taking a very dangerous risk with your life. Your stance against God is the greatest mistake (or miscalculation ) of your life.
Tell that to countries that are atheist and are prospering. While most religious countries are in turmoil.

Idango: You see the bible told me that " as many as receive him (jesus) he give them the power to become the sons of God" . If you receive him you receive the power to be a son of God and he talks with you and show you things.

Do you know there is nothing that happens to me, that he has not spoken to me about or shown me before hand? because i am a son of God . You cannot be an atheist and want to know how God works or speak to people. Come to him and be his child, he will show you great things which you dont know. Dont remain in your lab trying to figure out whether he exist or not, he reveals himself to his children not to atheists.

my mind has difficulty with this. please help me understand.
Christianity is idiotic. Christians are selfish, they believe that only them have a license to sin but can still go to heaven with unlimited forgiveness licence from Jesus. A muslim/atheist/agnostic can live a saintly life but will go to hell. How crazy

To all Nigerians, are you saying that ALL your ancestors from they 15th century and earlier are in hell? Are you saying that Ghandi is in hell? These people didnt believe in God. Ghandi was a saint for his people.

davidylan: Sex before marriage is not difficult to achieve at all. the problem is many of us have been programmed into believing that love = sex.

I was meaning to ask those who are either married or have been in long-term christian-centered relationships to share with us some of their experiences growing and bonding with their mates. One of the issues was that raised by logicboy - what was your rule regarding sex before marriage? Where there any boundaries that you set for your relationship? Especially for the guys, how did you approach being the spiritual leader in your relationship BEFORE marriage?

will add more as i think of them. Amazing how there is no book on "christian relationships for dummies". smiley
Sex before marriage is almost impossible. Only few people can claim to be virgins on their wedding day. Even if soemeone did not have sex before marriage, how did the person get attracted to the partner? Didnt the person think of the partner sexually? Ehem that is fornication

JeSoul: Jesoul takes no pleasure in the banning of anyone. I'm only for posters to respect each other and respect the topic the same way they will like to be respected. The topic calls for input from christians on their experiences with relationships...it will be nice of our atheist friends to respect that and stay off since they can't contribute to the thread.

All fine & dandy and this is your opinion - as an atheist. Those of us christians, especially those of us who have dated and & married, know and have experienced otherwise.
grin grin grin grin grin grin grin

Wow, so christians are now denying that majority of them have had sex before marriage? Wow.

Do Christians and Muslims who go to BABALWO or OKIJA-Shrine for one reason or the other Profess membership=NO

Most people who attend cultural festival , Osun, Eyo, etc do not profess membership, but they practise and participate it.

Because it is part of culture.
1) What kind of christian goes to a babalawo?

2) You answered your question....there is a difference between doing something for a religion and doing something as culture
Christianity EtcRe: Where Is God In Our Everyday Lives? by logicboy(op): 4:48pm On Apr 11, 2012
Wow.....so you even try to remix it through the funeral route.

How do we bury people in Nigeria mostly? Tradtionally. In my tradition, we would first go to the familys house for a meeting, then build a house for the burial and then, during the burial we will dance and sing local songs. We then bury the dead guy in the house. This is all based on our tradtional religion and not christianity or islam which are the major relgion. Does that mean that most Nigerians are traditionalists? Same goes for the Japanese brurial and bhuddism

emmatok: Do Buddhists believe in gods, deities, spirits, angels=YES

Do they meditate =YES

They have temples =YES

Are they religious =YES

There are estimated to be about 100000 shrines in Japan, what do you think they do there.

That the Japanese profess no religious membership dose not mean that they do not practise it.

Because it is part of there culture.
What is the name of the god that buddhists believe in? Buddhists dont believe in a God.

Does meditation equal prayer?

10000 shrines for less than 40% of the population who are religious. Did you not do maths?

What do you know about Japanese culture? Have you been to Japan? Have you ever had a Japanese girlfriend? I have, have you? Shintoism is part of their culture just as juju is part of Nigerian culture. Ho wmany juju practictioners do you know?

Your quote below is the most stupid thing I have seen today. If someone doesnt profess any religion, why would he/she practice a religion?

Christianity EtcRe: Where Is God In Our Everyday Lives? by logicboy(op): 4:08pm On Apr 11, 2012
emmatok: I thought you are smarter than this.

Zen Buddhists might not believe in the Christians and Muslims God, but have temples, they have DEITIES they pray and mediate they are religious people.

This is from your link

"Figures that state 84% to 96% of Japanese adhere to Shinto and Buddhism are not based on self-identification but come primarily from birth records, following a longstanding practice of officially associating a family line with a local Buddhist temple or Shinto shrine."
To whom do the Buddhists pray to? Who is their God? You keep failing!

The quote below does not mean that they follow the religion, it just means that their family comes from a buddhist or shinto background

"Figures that state 84% to 96% of Japanese adhere to Shinto and Buddhism are not based on self-identification but come primarily from birth records, following a longstanding practice of officially associating a family line with a local Buddhist temple or Shinto shrine."

Did you miss this quote below?

About 70 percent of Japanese profess no religious membership,[7][8] according to Johnstone (1993:323), 84% of the Japanese claim no personal religion. In census questionnaires, less than 15 percent reported any formal religious affiliation by 2000.[9] And according to Demerath (2001:138), 64% do not believe in God, and 55% do not believe in Buddha

At atheists on this thread, do not crash or derail the topic. I don't know why you guys always see the need to crash christian topics without disruptive comments. If you have nothing to contribute to the topic, its not by force to post, go and make your own topic.

any repeat trouble makes should expect a ban. Thanks.

@David, can you clarify, what sort of examples do mean?
shocked shocked shocked shocked I am so scared, Jesoul wants to ban me!!!

On a serious note, a Godly relationship in the bible prohibits sex before marriage. Sex before marriage is almost impossible or at least very hard to achieve. Also, we are animals and we always have to be sexually attracted to a person of the opposite sex before marriage. No one dates/marries someone that they dont want to have sex with later.

A godly or religous relationship is impossible unless you're a eunuch

Cine: Just reading through some of these comments --- makes for some serious lolzzz....

No ones ever convinced anyone anywhere on the internet that their deeply held beliefs may well be wrong - stupid - or just ignorant. Stand up atheists, theists, conspiracy theorists.

You could present facts all day to anyone with any (misguided but) deeply held belief and the one thing they're not going to do is check facts (or fact check) and then acknowledge they may have been slightly wrong/ignorant on the subject. Psychology has long called this the 'backfire effect': when people's beliefs are challenged with facts, the beliefs they hold become stronger and harder for them to shake. It's in all our natures. Go on, fact check, and then please get bored of your opinions as quickly as possible.

So enough of the condescending remarks from theists on how you hope God opens your eyes before it's too late/you'll burn in hell for this and that.... and Atheists unless you've got something 'real' to campaign about like muslims attempting to introduce sharia law into your neighborhood, or christians trying to block the teachings of einstein in class etc etc - please do us all a favour and shut the Bleep up.
Hello, Mr. Holier than thou aka Mr self righteous. grin grin angry There's always some smartass dude that takes the middle and judges both sides

rawtruth: God has no form but those who believe He exists use the pronoun 'He' when they talk about 'Him'.

God is the source of everything, yes! Evil is the choice of bad over good. God allows us to decide our destiny on earth through our freewill. He has however indicated to us the consequence of every choice we made, be it good or bad. No sane adult is unaware of the difference between bad and good. for example,if you used a machete to clear land for farming you have done good with it, but use the same machete to cut someone or destroy another person's property and you could be jailed for causing harm. So, depending on your concept of evil, this simple example answers your question in that regard.
So god is a source of evil? lmao. And you want me to believe in him?

God doesnt exist
