sauer: It's quite deprecating to consider other people not as sane as you are. There is absolutely no evidence that "the world will be a terrible place to live in if more people were atheists". Apparently, you haven't exactly considered this statement before making it. The world's sanest places have always been the places that are less religious in the overall.
Personally, I believe the world will be a better place if we did away with all gods. However, this will probably not happen. Rather gods will evolve and will forever exist in one form or the other, so long as we humans continue to have an intangible side to us that yearns for worship.

These people, the only reason why they refrain from going on an all out rampage to destroy others in their bid move ahead in life is because they are afraid of what will meet them in the after-life or essentially because they are theists.
I have heard people say, “If I was not a Muslim/Christian I would____” and then proceed to recite all the abominable and atrocious acts they would carry out. Personally, I refrain from indulging in a lot of evil acts largely because I am theist.

Thanks for your perspective. My story is not totally unique. Most atheists will tell you that there is no absolute purpose in life and that we have the choice to do good or bad before we die. I choose to do good deeds just like many other good atheists

Uyi Iredia: Your method of debunking is fraudulent. Christians base their sanctity of marriage not on the actions of people (who we already know tend to fall short particularly as regards sex). Christians base the sanctity of marriage on what Adam said in Genesis. It is akin to debasing the ideals codified in the legal system based on the fact that it is repeatedly broken. If you are to bring up an argument against the sanctity of marriage you'll have to point out how it is harmful.

Thank you for sharing your views. However, I disagree. I used the bible to show that the bible itself does not support the sanctity of marriage doctrine that many christians talk about. The bible supports polygamy and incest. Even Adam engaged in incest. Adam was the parent of Eve since Eve was created (cloned)from his ribs.

Many theists or religious people believe that atheists have a hole in their life without God or that they are prone to kill themselves because there is no punishment and life is just random to them. I will address this in this thread.


When I was a catholic, I used to think that the purpose of man was to serve God and my hope comes from God. When I became an atheist, I saw things differently and I realised that my thinking was wrong. Not going to church or worshiping god did not change my character as a person. I still loved football, I still loved chess and I still love learning new things. Becoming an atheist made me appreciate life even more; when I play football now, I play with all my heart and I dont believe that God is on my side and helping me against the other team. When I play chess, I dont expect some ideas from God or some miracle to escape from a close checkmate, it is by my prowess alone. My character did not change when I became an atheist, I did not lose hope, I did not change my character; all I did was to throw away a faulty belief that has no evidence to back it.


What is my purpose in life?
There is no absolute purpose in life. However, common sense will tell you that people will remember you in their hearts if you treated them well before you died. Common sense will tell you that you have only one life and life should not be wasted being sad; do things that make you and people around you happy.

My purpose in life is what I choose it to be. Going by common sense, I want to make this world a better place, making our children or grandchildren live in a better world. I also want to libe a happy life and enjoy myself. This is what I hope for; a better life and a better world. Human beings can do good despite our innate selfishness. We have seen this. Why did we invent telephones and televisions and the internet? We want to communicate with each other. We can do good and evil but only good deeds will make this world a better place. I will also do the hobbies that I enjoy as long as they do not put another human being in serious danger- enjoy football, chess, travelling and writing.

I will not put a god before helping my fellow man. If I see a starving man outside a bacon shop, I will not let him die of hunger for a second because a god said that pork/bacon is forbidden. I will not curse someone to hell because a god says that their lifestyle is sin. I will always put humans first because a selfish life is a wasted life.

Atheism is inevitable, the only problem is the pace at which it grows. Atheism grows fast under certain conditions;


1) The internet;
Nigeria's internet usage is growing as more and more communication companies are offering new internet packages. The internet is where people can learn lots about any topic. Religion is constantly debated and attacked on the internet. Religions are not afforded the blasphemy laws or protection they have in the real world on the internet. There are millions articles on the evils of religion on the internet. There are articles showing the flaws of holy books. There are many debate videos on youtube where atheist debaters like Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens defeat the religious debaters. Religions die on the internet, a wise saying says. It is therefore no surprise that theocracies always censor the internet.

2) Nigerians in diaspora/atheist countries;
More and more Nigerians are travelling out of Nigeria for study and work. Many of such Nigerians go to atheistic/secular countries like the UK, Japan, South Korea etc. which are all better developed than Nigeria. Some of these people take bits of the culture back to Nigeria on their return.

3) Religious problems;
Many Nigerians are turned off from religion after they see their religious leaders adding to the problems of Nigeria and while God continues to watch. They have seen pastors slapping innocent children accused of witchcraft, they have seen terrorists (Boko Haram) kill people, holy pedophilia etc.
Such Nigerians also ask why Nigeria upon all its religiousity is no better than countries that are irreligious.

4) Human rights;
European countries, America and other developed countries are now pushing for better human rights around the world, especially in Africa and the middle east. Human rights are quite secular when considering that free speech and the right to sexual orientation have negative implications for religion.
-free speech; bye-bye to blasphemy laws
-right to sexual orientation; gay is here to stay!

5) The rise of secular humanists and atheist organisations/people;
Many Nigerians including myself are dedicating themselves to seek equal treatment of non-believers in religion and for a better Nigeria. Atheists/skpetics/agnostics are always easy targets for bigotry and hatred in religious countries. Furthermore, many atheists feel that with education and proper information, people will be more likely to make better decisions. A higher literacy rate is key to reducing extremist behaviours. If we explain to people that we should put humans first, learn more about the world and focus human development through cooperation,, Nigeria will be a better place
