CareerRe: Which Is Best, Architecture Or Civil Engineering by lordally(m): 9:12am On Jul 09, 2021
Fredique:
I am an Architect. 15 years since graduation and registered with ARCON and an NIA full member. Since you made your option Architecture vs Civil Engineering, I'll give you an honest response: Please choose CIVIL Engineering.

The reason is that it is more versatile. If you want to work in employment, you will have more opportunities and higher chances in other sectors than an Architect would. For example, road construction, oil and gas, and structural engineering consulting. It's only in Architectural consulting firms and more recently, in property development firms that Architects are sought. They may go to other sectors, but they may not work as architects there.

The second reason you should consider civil engineering. As an architect in consulting, my projects come from clients directly. For every project going more than one floor, I MUST engage a civil engineer, or advise my client to engage one. So a civil engineer gets paid for every Architect's project that is not a bungalow. My go-to civil engineer receives projects from many other Architects -without needing to get jobs from clients personally. This translates, on average, to more projects for civil engineers in the building consulting sector than architects (they may not be paid as much for one project, but on average if you are good, you will have more volume of work because your source will be from several architects, and this translates to more money)

The third reason is immigration. I recommend choosing a course that is easier to immigrate with should you consider immigration later. Do a google search now for occupations in demand in Canada or Australia, you will most likely find civil engineering (or its related synonyms), and not Architecture.

Someone here mentioned how you can make money as a student studying Architecture. I see it as a disadvantage. As an architect in practice, the fact that clients can meet students for something that we trained years for in Nigeria is bad (Obviously, they don't get the same quality and professional service). But the point is don't study something in school that anyone can do because of the poor regulation in Nigeria.

During my time of choosing a course, I did not consider an alternative. It was Architecture or nothing. So my advice is because you are considering the two and you consider that any of them will be OK for you.

If you must choose Architecture, make sure you are absolutely passionate about it and extremely able to delay gratification and have great capability for long-suffering. It can be rewarding, no doubt. But for most people, it gets tough at first before it gets rewarding -especially if you subject yourself to the process of real professional training.

I said all I said because you made your options Architecture vs Civil Engineering. That said, PLEASE CONSIDER AVOIDING THE TWO COMPLETELY. Go for IT (your maths and physics will come in handy). The world has changed. There are easier ways to attain professional fulfilment. IT is versatile. if you are skilled, you will be sought after in every sector and qualify for most immigration programmes. Don't take my word for it, do a google search -compare entry-level salaries of IT professionals and Architecture graduates (ENTRY LEVEL). Search sites like indeed and glassdoor. Also, check occupations in demand for immigration programmes. Don't do any course that limits you to Nigeria, or with which you will have issues transitioning to work abroad even if you succeed in immigrating. IT qualifications are universal. Architecture and Civil engineering licences are local. For example, I am a registered Architect in Nigeria, but I will not be considered an architect in the UK unless I go through the process of acquiring their licence.

I hope you find my '2 kobo' opinion helpful

@Lordally, thanks for your kind words. How does one respond to nasty kids below:

@Lordally, the so called nasty nice guy posted direct insult and abuses in several places apart from the above. He said his own father is crazy. A kid I know that if I handle, his papa and mama will both prostrate and knee to start begging. Is that one a nice person? He has no home training. And all the above nasty friends of his above. I am telling you the truth. They are not nice. They sounds nice when their ego is in place, but as soon as my words start itching them, they became nasty. I do not even know any of them before I started this thread. So, why did they come and say rubbish? Imagine the Africonn idiotaaa saying his father is insane and no one should work with him. I think his mother is in Yabaleft as we speak.

I mean, why such insult? For what?
Bro I was just laughing through out I swear!! You just dey gimme joy!!

Secondly your write ups are insightful even though I personally deeply do not agree with all of them and maybe my own response is just to ignore the ones I don't agree and focus on the ones that goes well with me and theirs is to be vocal about certain parts dey don't concur to. But at the end of the day as a splendid writer in which I think you're the truth is Even if you're God , you would and can never get 100% acceptance from everybody and it's makes the world a better place! Leaving rooms for others to have their own opinions. Just watch it Last Last You and this people go soon be friends cos @Karleb I know na nice guy o

Herdsmen, Secession Agitations, Bandits, etc
Listen to me, you are a problem solver. Get this into your brain. You are to solve problems, and not turn yourself to Rank Xerox only following and copying successes.

Excuse me!!! Could you look at the main challenges Nigeria is facing and come up with solutions? Come on! It is not only about just coding. You must understand the industry you have seen challenges in. So, tell me, how can you just start learning about many industries. Of course not, a tree cannot make a forest. I am telling you that you must be in a team in order to be useful.

How do you see just learning many programs help you. C#, C++, Java, etc. I appreciate all, but let us come together to solve challenges we have. Some can define the problems well, while you can code to make it happen. At the same time, there might be need for developing hardware too.

Who says Nigerians cannot also start building and innovating? Tell me. Who say so?

I will release concepts here. Though, some might look intimidating, but you can still break them down to the simplest versions. Trust me, I have seen people do crazy stuff with my articles which is beyond me also. I just receive letters and proofs of some creativities and I start imagining how such brains had been hiding. Mehn! I dont doubt people. I dont put a limit to what guys can do. I respect 20s, 30s and 40s brain. I may "bash" you, but trust me, I respect your brains. I will never underestimate anyone.

So, pardon me if what I am about launching to is a bit scary, but trust me, it is not. You just gat to pick up materials and level up. That's all. If you can "jam" Java, C++, C, PhP, Javastrict and many other stuff in that tiny brain of yours, trust me that you can "jam" more into it.

I may say Nigerian coders are "this and that", but trust me, I respect everyone of you and your brains. I mean it. Seriously. I have seen enough to not underestimate anyone. And a Nigerian brain is magnetic. I will continue with this new areas you guys should start looking into soon. Yes, you can do it.
Now with this!! You deserve a standing Ovation. Now no bash anyone again abeg! grin grin just dey drop better jeloof rice and Egusi soup dey go! One love

Thank you sir for your kind words. Actually, I expect the criticism, but a good manager or leader must be able to use all such for the benefit of the job at hand. Well, the criticism has made my readers to see two views and it's left for them to take the path they want.

There are many startup programs for entrepreneurs or "techpreneurs", but do you know why I shared these? I will tell you. Many of the programmers acting like mentors here cannot even "man up" to take the opportunities because they know their standard is not up to it yet. I also put a school here where they can learn. This is a standard they must meet to be able to attract investors. But are they up to this standard? They need to start asking themselves. For you to have made comments on them it means you are focused.

Now, these programmers need to start thinking of innovative options for Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. But they arent thinking about it, rather, they are all in the same boat of developing add ons, supplementary apps for these giants. But the future is not good for these giants because they all got too much involved in politics, even politics of other nations in the name of "freedom of speech". It is not good for business. OK, Nigeria is the first nation with balls to suspend Twitter. And as powerful as Russia is, she couldn't do it first; however, decided to ask all of them to register companies in Russia. Of course, Nigeria asked for it first also. Lol. So, can you see what I am seeing? These giants are going down soon. How many nations will they open companies in directly and start paying taxes to all. grin And before you know it, Trump and his allies will move against them in the US too. I see them losing grip of their markets all over the world soon. So, what can we do? Even before Nigeria announced Twitter ban, Kremlim had announced that all foreign software and apps will be banned soon, and only Russian indigenous and open sources will be allowed. So, Kremlim had asked their guys to develop substitutes now pending the time the ban will take effect. Meaning that Google, Apple, Microsoft etc are going down in Russia very soon. Why? Russia knows what she has done in terms of hacking and she knows how these foreign software and apps can be deployed and used against them. grin Is that not a huge opportunity for the Russian developers? Many nations will follow the trend soon. Mark my words. Except these giants retrace their steps fast and stop meddling with political issues.

The same opportunity is in Nigeria. I was first against the Twitter ban, and I even had a thread on it. But when I sat down, I saw a huge future with this ban in place. Huge opportunities for boys and girls here. Guys start thinking. Start innovating. Start thinking ahead.

I am kinda busy, but I'll move the thread forward. May be slow, but I will. I will talk about areas and industries we should think of. It is not about financial, marketing, social media services only.
I learnt a lot from this piece!

Argument is not the way to learn. Attacking people is not the way to learn. You learn by saying the truth. And when you do not know something, do not pretend you know about it just cos you think people dont know. Saying the truth has nothing to do with debates or arguments. And please, research him well, he has hatred in his blood. I refrain from using nasty words, but I'm telling you that he is nasty. And the boy is a kid. If I descend on him, he will not like himself. for 2 Years I was reading programming everyday because I knew there's no point taking a job I couldn't deliver. but it's less for you guys, there are platforms to play in, then there wasn't much API Development, it was mostly Website and Integration or Mobile apps/Desktop Apps. people just need to be more exposed. There are so much options it just depends on one's level of exposure, Coding is key but researching is more important.

YOUR UNCLE HAS NOT TOLD YOU THE TRUTH.

YOU THINK ITS EASY TO JUST GET A JOB IN THE US?

IS IMMIGRATION LAWYER FREE OR EVEN CHEAP?

IS THE ASYLUM PROCESS THAT EASY THAT YOU JUST APPLY AND INSTANTA YOU GET TEMPORARY ASYLEE STATUS?

GETTING A CAR IN THE US IS PROBABLY ONE OF THE EASIEST THINGS TO DO COS 2ND HAND CARS ARE CHEAP, ESPECIALLY THE OLDER ONES, SO THATS NOT REALLY AN ACHIEVEMENT. THE LAND HE BOUGHT IN NAIJA, WHAT IS THE QUALITY OF THE LAND? I CAN BET IS ONE OF THOSE LAND DEEP INSIDE BUSH.

AMBULANCE IS NOT LIKE WE SEE IN THE MOVIES OH. IT TAKES TIME TO ARRIVE, THATS THE FIRST SHOCKER. THEN YOU PAY FOR THE TRIP TO HOSPITAL. IM SURE HE DOESNT HAVE INSURANCE SO HE IS LUCKY THEY TOOK HIM IN AS AN EMERGENCY CASE OTHERWISE HE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN TREATED. ALSO, KIDNEY STONE IS NOT INSTANTLY FATAL; HOSPITALS IN NAIJA HANDLE SUCH ROUTINELY.

ABROAD IS NOT HEAVEN...LOOK VERY WELL BEFORE JUMPING BECAUSE ANOTHER PERSON JAPA IS NOT YOUR OWN JAPA.

IF YOU ARE WILLING TO WORK AS HARD IN NAIJA, YOU WILL MAKE IT HERE AS WELL.

THE MAJOR CONSOLATION FOR DOING HARD MENIAL JOBS ABROAD IS THAT THERE IS SOME DIGNITY OF LABOUR THERE, PLUS WHEN YOU CONVERT THE MONEY TO NAIRA, YOU FEEL A SENSE OF CONSOLATION.

MOST TIMES, AWON ABROAD PEOPLE DO NOT TELL THE WHOLE TRUTH ABOUT THEIR SITUATION AND I THINK IT IS REALLY BAD OF THEM.

ABROAD IS FOR YOU IF

1. YOU HAVE NOTHING IN NAIJA
2. YOU ARE SINGLE
3. YOU ARE BELOW 30YRS

SELAH
I get your time today so I go answer you well well

You say my uncle hasn't Told me the truth so you mean you Sabi my uncle wey I grow up for the same house with me pass okay ooo!

You're telling me I think it's easy to get a job in the US I won't answer this but if you knew the kind of jobs he did here and what it took him to get the job Omo I would confidently say it's easier to get a job over there than here!

You're asking me is Immigration lawyer free or cheap well I would leave you to find out by yourself but one thing I would say is weda it's cheap or expensive if you can afford it then you can get it( irrespective of weda your people back home foot the bills grin )

You asked if the Asylum process is easy that you apply and get instant temp status . My answer to you is this Baba you don't expect me to start Narrating how the whole thing happened and how it went from him waking up to take his bath , eating and taking a bus etc. I just summarised everything. Of course you sound learned and smart and might e older than I am so you should know it's unwise to drop or narrate sensitive things and drop details on a public forum!

ANS : WHEN one is Under Asylum and his case is still being processed , they are under some sort of Government care. As for kidney stone you say it's not Instantly fatal well for someone in Nigeria doing a security job of less than 35k or lesser being given such quick fast and responsive treatment is something he should have not gotten that easy in Nigeria. The cheapest he would have gotten would be in a Govt General hospital and of which he would be given a waiting time that would take months to be attended to if he was to go to a private hospital would he be able to afford it?? Think!

IF YOU ARE WILLING TO WORK AS HARD IN NAIJA, YOU WILL MAKE IT HERE AS WELL.

ANS: for someone who has always wanted to go to the USA from childhood, telling him anything oda than the US no go enter in ear. He's a workaholic at some point in Nigeria he was doing security job in 2 places( Morning Duty here and Night duty in another place ) I think he did it for some months and it nearly cost him his life! He had to focus on one! So such person carrying that same energy Would not suffer abroad!

THE MAJOR CONSOLATION FOR DOING HARD MENIAL JOBS ABROAD IS THAT THERE IS SOME DIGNITY OF LABOUR THERE, PLUS WHEN YOU CONVERT THE MONEY TO NAIRA, YOU FEEL A SENSE OF CONSOLATION.

ANS: yes you're correct cos whatever he is today and the kind of life he's living it's something he would never achieve in Nigeria at least when he was here.

IN CONCLUSION weda it's a cheap car his riding or not the end point is WHATEVER HE HAS NOW IS SOMETHING HE WOULD NEVER HAVE HAD IF HE DIDNT LEAVE 9JA!!
