Sports / Keshi Appointed UBA Chairman by lovetterrison(m): 4:16pm On Dec 02, 2013 |
The appointment of Ambassador Joe Keshi as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of United Bank for Africa Plc (UBA) has put to rest the speculation on the return of Mr. Tony Elumelu as the chairman of the bank. Elumelu retired from UBA as the group managing director on July 31, 2010, and there had been speculation that the founder of Heirs Holdings might return to the UBA Board following the expiration in August 2013 of the three-year regulatory restriction placed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). A statement quoted Elumelu to have expressed satisfaction over the appointment of the new chairman. "The choice of Ambassador Keshi as the Chair of UBA is one that will bring significant value to the shareholders of the bank. He is highly qualified and experienced to lead the board. His international clout and strong experience in policy formulation and execution will definitely bring significant insight to board deliberations," he said. He further stated: "It is clear that UBA is strongly pushing for industry dominance whilst exploiting the abundant opportunities in Africa through its unique platform." However, it was gathered that some industry watchers who are close to Elumelu, believe his status is now beyond banking board room affairs following the success of Heirs Holdings, which has significant investments in power, oil and gas, hospitality, real estate, agribusiness and healthcare. The Tony Elumelu Foundation he founded in 2010 is also helping him to actualise his passion to create more entrepreneurs across Africa. |

Science/Technology / Crash Victim Follows Doctor’s Orders And Grows Nose On Forehead by lovetterrison(m): 11:44am On Sep 27, 2013 |
We recently reported about a Dutchman whose nose was the subject of a legal dispute, but the latest nose story is much sadder and bizarre. Xiao Lian, 22, from Fujian Province, got into a car crash last year, which led to an infection that corroded the cartilage in his nose. Doctors were unable to fix the corroded cartilage and came up with the solution of growing him a brand new nose instead. According to reports, the new nose is grown by placing a skin tissue expander onto Xiaolian's forehead, cutting it into the shape of a nose and planting a cartilage taken from his ribs. The good news is that Xiao Lian only has to endure a few more days with the forehead nose before surgeons transplant it to its proper location. This is reportedly the first successful case of a nose transplant in China and surgeons are being praised for having skills of an “international standard”. http://www.echinacities.com/news/Crash-Victim-Follows-Doctors-Orders-and-Grows-Nose-on-Forehead

Sports / Adebayo Akinfenwa Is FIFA 14's Strongest Player by lovetterrison(m): 4:31pm On Sep 20, 2013 |
Nigerian striker Saheed is delighted to be the strongest player on FIFA 14. Akinfenwa, who plays for Gillingham, was glad when he read EA Sports tweeted him as the strongest in the world. Honoured -It's official, I am the strongest player on FIFA 14. EA Sports tweeted me last week to let me know the good news and I’m honoured, he said on dailymail.co.uk. -My younger brother, Dele, was more excited than me at first but he sat me down and drummed home that, in it’s own way, it is quite an achievement. To be recognised as the best in the whole world at something is an achievement. -People may laugh or whatever, but my strength is something that I have to work on. It’s not something that just happens overnight, it takes dedication and hard work and it has a purpose as it helps me every week on the pitch. Rating -I was given a 97 rating out of 100 and third on the list was George Elokobi of Wolves, who got a rating of 95. I remember playing against him twice last year for Northampton and he is a strong boy. I got the better of him in the first game but the second game was more evenly matched - I think he thought 'I’m not going to let The Beast get the better of me twice. -Unfortunately, George was injured when we played Wolves earlier this year but hopefully he’ll be fit when we play them later in the season. It will be an epic tussle. http://www.futaa.com/football/article/nigerian-striker-delighted-to-be-fifaas-strongest 1 Like |

Sports / South Africa Inflict More Pains On Fans by lovetterrison(m): 1:24pm On Sep 11, 2013 |
Football fans of Bafana Bafana felt a deeper pain when South Africa were beaten 2-1 by Zimbabwe in an international friendly on Tuesday. An unstoppable second-half strike by Knowledge Musona and a goal by Cuthbert Malajila allowed for Zimbabwe to record a 2-1 victory over South Africa in a friendly match at Orlando Stadium. Dominance Ian Gorowa’s men dominated large portions of the game to inflict a surprise defeat on Bafana Bafana on home soil despite Bernard Paker hitting a late goal in stoppage time. South Africa came into the game fresh off a morale boosting 4-1 victory over Botswana at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday afternoon, and Gordon Igesund was adamant to continue on that run. The victory however did not mean anything as Ethiopia grabbed the group’s ticket to the final round of qualifiers ahead of the Bafana Bafana http://www.futaa.com/football/article/south-africa-inflict-more-pains-on-fans |
