@poster
not only do they dress provocatively(i must quickly add that not all)but some of them will be acting funny like borderline secuctively especially the markerters.that is my own experience in lagos dont know about other places
Greencat:

U can always tell them to dress the way you want. Mr king!! mwcheeew *roll eyes*
its not about telling them how to dress, but for them to dress in a business like way,you can dress chic and still look conservative like the poster said bank staffs abroad look beautiful but dress properly.

btw omoge you r fine o

Politics / Re: Oni, Youth Group Blast Tinubu, ACN Over Attack On Awo Family by lucabrasi(m): 6:35pm On Jun 09, 2011
oni is just a sore loser looking to take pot shots at the author of his downfall.

concerning the topic itself like the comment i posted on a similar topic somewhere else online, one pertinent point we musnt fail to realise is that the name and ideals of awolowo transcends his family,it is a political belief and ideal,so they are holding it in trust for the next generation.hid awolowo has forfeited the right not to have comments made concerning her the moment she took the reins of the awolowo political dynasty and i dont re call the man  insulting or abusing her as a person.

normally in her role she should be a non partisan mother over every yoruba irrespective of their political differences, but just like the ooni of ife oyinlola's godfather she allowed herself and their family newspaper the tribune to be used as gbenga daniel's mouth piece, this is an open secret and theres no need to pretend otherwise.
so using emotional blackmail to talk about her age and her dead daughter is nothing but side stepping the issues, blame tinubu for anything but nobody was friends with him during the dark days of obasanjo when he was fighting all alone.
nobody was friends with him during the time of yar adua, even atiku  ladoja and others used him for their own ends and dumped him like a used rag no one said anything about that now that everything the man was fighting for is now yielding results.
the truth is bitter,i really think h.i.d should re asses her values and the harm being partisan has had on the awo political family

luluosas:

Sagamite, are you a TRUE Christian? Do you know any thing about Pastor Adeboye? Have you ever had a personal contact with him? Every order may be craving for wealth through any means possible but, not Adeboye. Look, do you think that, Pastor Adeboye does not know the implication of the sin against the Holy Spirit? Remember, the sin against the Holy Spirit is the ONLY sin without forgiveness. Mark 3:29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin (RSV) Mark 3:28-29 28 "Assuredly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they may utter; 29 "but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation" (NKJV)
stop confuing yourself sire, pastor adeboye or any MOG for that matter are not the same as the holy spirit unless you are ascribing  a power to them that the bible has not given them.go and check acts of the apostle apostle paul said if you want to bring allegations agains a leader in the body of christians get two or three witnesses and in front of the church elders lay out the allegations
luluosas:

So, be careful. For your information, if you think that Pastor Adeboye is always speaking from his head any time you hear him say "The Lord Said", and you based your concept on this as deceitful, I will live you to God to judge you. Or are you thinking that Pastor Adeboye takes pride in relating what God says to him? Please, if you have any grudge against any pastor because of your personal encounter with them, why not just mention the pastor and what such pastor did to you.
Whether this story has any thing to do with Forbes or not, that Pastor Adeboye was missing from the list should tell that, the rating of Adeboye is by HEAVENLY standard, not the show of fame we see these days from the so called pastors. I am a REDEEMER by the grace of God and I can tell at least, a little of what I know about ADEBOYE.
i am also a redeemer as well of many many years,my uncle is a redeemed pastor as well not withstanding anywhere i see the truth i will not shy away from speaking it as long as i am justified before GOD.
jesus christ was a young man when he came upon people defiling the temple of GOD,he did not say "let me leave them because i dont want to touch GOD's annointed"he knew he was justified and he took action.redeemed and pastor adeboye are not doing enough for the less well off members and i certainly dont agree with him buying a private jet a it is not justified.
apostles used their feet to walk the places our MOGS are flying over with private jets.
go and find out who john g lake is ok? 13 of his fellow missionaries starved to death or died of tropical sicknesses in different parts of africa while they were sharing the gospel.
the same africa that our pastors are flying all over with private jets.
john g lake was doing miracles you have not heard of till today but he gave up millions and was borrowing money to get on a train

@kennyisaac & hbabe:

Don't mind those who are talking ignorantly, you guys are right on point!!! Don't forget the Bible says , "people perish for lack of knowledge"(Hosea 4:6) If these ignorant critics (no apologies) knew better, they would do better and talk better. "The just shall live by his OWN faith"; not according to how people think he should live.

Enjoy God & His Blessings that make Rich & adds no sorrow with it! CHEERS,
if you dont mind pls stop turning the bible upside down both you kennyisaac, hbabe and co should go back and read your bibles, when the bible talks about people perishing for lack of knowledge it is about people who deify MOG they are MEN OF  not GOD.secondly we are all annointed men and women of GOD.
go and read what hebrews 4;14 said and also in 1st corinthians dont remember the chapter now,the lord has given us complete liberty and he has said we should approach his throne with all confidence.
go and see what apostle paul enjoins timothy and the rest of the apostles to do with church money,he told them to share it and distribute amongst widows and the poor and infirmed he further said widows who are still young are permitted to re marry.

why didnt jesus christ use his ministry money to buy a great white horse or couldnt he afford it?
why didnt apostle paul use the money donated for the work of the gospel to get proper nice chariots,a nice house and stuffs?
there is nothing wrong in enjoying GOD and his blessings but it is morally wrong when a congregation cannot feed and the head of the congregation is diplaying wealth ostentiously.
are you telling me pastor oyedepo's 29 yrs old son is the most qualified pastor in winners to head the london church?
can you justify the 4 jets when  there are members of winners chapel who cant afford 3 square meals never mind a bicycle?
wouldnt it be nice for the pastor to use the funds for the private jet and buy maybe 100,000 keke marwas and give it out to the less well off or use the money to set deserving members up for business

Kilode?!:

What exactly do you disagree with? That we are NOT the only culture with "respect for elders" in our tradition?
in your retort you mentioned that this topic has nothing to do with our culture i.e of respect for elders, seeking advice from them e.t.c and furthermore asserted that this cuts across the board, inferring that the situation we have in nigeria does not exist in other parts of the world which prompted the reply from me that i disagree with these two assertions
Kilode?!:

That we should not use "Let's keep the elders as advisers" excuses to justify the Council of State?
Your statement in bold; Let's not face it sir. It is your opinion and a conjecture.
in the united states, the opinions of statesmen/women are still sought notably papa bush, business and religious leaders e.t.c
pls lets do a chronological research of past leaders and even influential people and look at their business associates, company lawyers and accountants
the likes of afe babalola, richard akinjideare still family lawyers to the old guard how many of them do you see using a kayode ajulo, keyamo
lets look at our political scene, apart from lately that relatively young people have been given political appointments as special assistants how many young people can boast of holding politically sensitive positions i.e percentage over ll?
so i am sorry i totally disagree with you it is a general opinion
Kilode?!:

I know many older people who like to work with younger folks, Also, it is a dangerous backward way to think if you want progress. Good leaders should seek advise from competent people, period.
lets not get ahead of ourselves here, its not about mine or yours or anyone's personal opinion, its about what is on ground
When did this become an argument against Old people? I don't have anything against old people. I'm arguing against a constitutional provision that's keeping THE SAME PEOPLE in the corridors of power regardless of what the electorates want or decide.
Kilode?!:

Besides, IBB, Gowon, OBJ and co are not the oldest people in Nigeria. Actually there is a generation or two of Nigerian statesmen and politicians who are far older than they are and a few of them are still alive. If you want to argue for Gerontocracy those are the people you should be demanding for, Not OBJ, IBB or even Shagari.
true but one thread that ties them together and puts them in a different class to 87 yrs old baba lasisi is that
1.they at onetime or the other have ruled the complex nation called nigeria
2.hold a lot of influence in their domain, and amongst influential nigerians
now if awolowo and his ilk were alive then this argument could hold some water but its a moot point as they r not
Kilode?!:

Let us stay on point.

Also, I'm sure we've established that this is not an argument against presidential advisers, this is about a constitutional provision that has kept the same crop of people on as advisers and policy influencers with the power to authorise sensitive actions no matter who is elected as president. It's sad you don't see that as dangerous.
well maybe there hasnt being enough people credible enough nor influential enough to take over from them?when ibb said the younger generation were unprepared was he lieing?
would you rather they were replaced by the likes of dimeji bankole?
or the so called youth representatives who went to collect 50grand bribe? i personally dont subscribe to blaming those guys, because we the so called next generation have not done any better so we dont have any moral unction to criticize
Kilode?!:

Again, that confusion thing I mentioned very early on in the thread, STOP confusing your people, make up your mind.
pls check your comments and you will get the context in which i replied,i wasnt confusing you r the one that lost the context of the comment check your comments again and you will understand
Kilode?!:

You cannot run your Government on some hodge-podge collection of opposing systems and expect progress.
If you want democracy, then do it. If you don't want it, then return to your village system and make sure you also accept the wisdom of it's traditional checks and balances, e.g we can make our presidents swallow poison instead of just impeaching them. Shebi we like tradition now undecided
i have news for you sire, nobody is practising real democracy, from the western world to africa to the communist nation of china all practise a corrupted form of democracy with your "hodge-podge collection of opposing views"
you have to look at the practicalities and how realistic it is to do what you are proposing sucessfully
the traditional way of governance was straightfoward, was not complex
Kilode?!:

I particularly like my Culture and I can argue for it but not the way you are doing it. What you are arguing for is called CONFUSION. or maybe I should call it Cabaltocracy. cheesy

Bro, what we have is state sanctioned Cronyism, except in this case they don't need to be relatives but just former associates or former Heads of State. We will not progress if we don't have a well articulated government system. It is a no-brainer really.
its not about justifying anything but trying to state a few practicalities, why dont you give me an example of what you see as a perfect government and i will highlight the "cabaltocracy" "cronyism inherent in them.realism of politics and governance is totally different from the lofty n noble ideals you r painting.
in an ideal world nigerian youths will rise up like those of the middle east and take their destiny in their hands
in an ideal world the british and havard educated dimeji bankole will perform brilliantly just like he was thought in oxford and havard
Kilode?!:

Then work to make it more stable, stop arguing for more confusion. Will ethnic politics die with OBJ? I don't think so.

Obasanjo is not in Government. He had his chance, IBB is not in Government he used up his opportunity. There is no reason to keep them on constitutionally.
true, maybe in an ideal stableand entrenched democracy not an unstable one where tribal/ethnic affiliations over rule every other considerations
Kilode?!:

As per Chairman Mao and other dicatators, Wether you agree with them or not, at least they had well articulated ideologies. Mao's revolution, though brutal, was for a particular purpose and for specific results, and like you said China is still reaping the benefits.

Explain OBJ's philosopical ideology, or Abacha's(He w'ld be in the CoS today if he was alive) or IBB's, then show me the results of their "brutish, obnoxious tactic" as you called it.
that is the point!nobody during their time understood their driving ideologies do youknow how many years it took for mao to be regarded and revered?
same goes for the others as well
where did abacha come into the conversation,i thought you were on about the members of the council of state?
maybe you should read up on history and check the methods leaders like the mao zedongs used doyou know how many protesting youths died at tianamen square?
as evil as hitler was,his total focus was to make germany a great nation and some twisted people still adore him for it
sir you should go and read "the prince" and you will see the qualities machiavelli ascribes to a prince
Kilode?!:

Sorry, I'm a Nigerian and I don't understand people like OBJ. Besides my position has little to do with specific leaders.
you are 1 IN 150 MILLION PLUS SIRE

Kilode?!:

@Lucabrasi, I have great respect for our culture but this has nothing to do with that, at least not the culture I'm aware of, besides, we are not the only society with respect for elders, it's a common theme across human societies and cultures, it is not an excuse for redundant BS leadership recycling.
i disagree with this assertion,if you check the lenght and breadth of africa where the whole idea of gerontocracy has taken root, the old generations are still sought out for advice or to play a role in governance, look at the whole of africa and their leaders, now check which of them is below 50 then you will begin to appreciate what i mean.now lets face it a president who is old will feel more comfortable being adviced by someone of similar age group
Kilode?!:

BTW, If we want to stick to culture, all our former leaders will be dead by now. My part of Nigeria is well known for forcing leaders and kings to commit suicide when we want them out of power. That is a culture that recognizes the need to have a clean break from a useless "past"
i presume you are reffering to the obas in pre colonial yoruba land, this practise was exclusive to the obas/traditional leaders and not old people besides in the same era you are making reference to in every culture yoruba, hausa, ibo the village always had the group of old people who stood as advicers and a pressure group to check the excesses and mediate in disputes e.t.c
Kilode?!:

. . .and we are not practising Gerontocracy, we have a Democracy -at least so it seems- I made that point earlier on in the thread, we need to quit confusing our people.
no sire,we might be practising democratic ideals but i dont need to tell you we are not practising a pure democracy, the elders have traditionally ruled in african countries/democracies and the third world generally that is a baggage and a tie in from our cultural/traditional past.
Kilode?!:

I don't buy your argument about OBJ. what skills? What you call "stabilize" is what I refer to as "destabilize" and "chaotic" Nigeria is definitely an unstable democracy thanks to the skills of leaders like him.
well you might disagree with me on obj but the fact of the matter is that the end justifies the means.
ivan the terrible was despised by many but he transformed russia
chairman mao zedong was despised,in fact he made a statement that he was ok for 10 million chinese to die of hunger if it will enure his cultural revolution will be sucessful and millions actually died of hunger, apart from this he killed a large number in tianamen square but he is credited with forming the blue print for present day china,
love him or hate him,it is actually people like obasanjo(the obnoxious, brutish type)that nigerians understand will the likes of atiku, tinubu, buhari be indulging in all they are now if obasanjo was the president?
he would have sorted out the boko haram issue GEJ seems clueless about
the fact that nigeria is an unstable democracy, and the peculiar nature of tribalism/ethic politics also makes an obasanjo needed

^^^they are not onlyin naija, but they are in controll in the whole of lagos.you will pay before erecting a foundation, you will pay for clearing the bush on your land and at times when erecting your fence.
and that is if they have not sold the land to like 5 different people, what they do after selling to multiple buyers is to now look for a military personell and then sell to him in order to chase all those other ppl away as a victim

I know a lot of people who took the plunge but moved back within 6 months.
you r right even one of my brothers had to return back to the uk after a year plus, apart from my plans i have been coming to nigeria every year since 2008 and last year i stayed in lagos for almost 6 months just to aclimatise myself
AjanleKoko:

How will you do that if you're not bringing investment, but rather looking for jobs? There are not even enough jobs for the Nigerians who never left home. How will you stimulate the economy?
maybe you didnt read all my comments, apart from the job search i am actually investing in a couple of businesses the job is just for me not to spend out of my savings and to get into the general day to day lifestyle, meet new people e.t.c
there are lots of business with an assured and guaranteed returns
AjanleKoko:

It would make sense if you're coming back home to start a business, and inject funds into the system. But if you're coming back to join the job market . . . it might be better if you stayed back.

true and thats what i though as well for me my plan is to invest in a medium sized business that will fetch me a daily/weekly means of livelihood
then look for a job while doing my research into the main business i will be investing the bulk of my savings into.
from my research most people that have not suceeded have either had an unrealistic expectation or have been dissappointed by broken promises from friends and families back home.
the issue here i that i asked myself what quality of life i wanted and if i had any hope of achieving it here and the answer is yes its possible but highly unlikely.
i really dont want to make cups of tea, cook, shop my self when im in my 50s and 60s
i dont want to have rheumatism at the age of 50s because of the excessive cycle of cold weather
i dont want to live most of my life in a semi detached with a small garden when i could live in a roomy, spacious bungalow or duplex besides i will always be a second class citizen in this country and achieving my full potential will always be a struggle.
i dont want to be a nigerian in name only,i want to experience it going round all the states we have on a road trip, experiencing all the diverse cultures contibuting my quota to making the country great.
my dad schooled in trinity university in dublin which was and still a prestigious institution,he rejected a job with opportunities to go back to nigeria after his studies and almost 50 yrs later he is not regretting it one bit.
look at the children in this country, especially the negative influence on african children ?

'Moving back to Nigeria' is beginning to sound cliche, and looks more like some sort of fad these days.
I'd like to hear what the reasons are for moving back to Nigeria, really. Can any of you guys say specifically?
there are several reasons for moving back to nigeria, speaking for myself and people i have been opportuned to discuss with like i said in one other thread here.
nigeria is ready to have a middle class and we diasporeans are the ones that can stimulate the economy and start the drive towards a middle class
nigeria is an emerging economy while the western world are at a plateau economy wise while they are hovering just above bankruptcy we have not even tapped into our real potentials yet not oil and gas but the people, the market economy.
i want a better quality of life, met a couple of people in nigeria earnng less than i do yet had housemaids, drivers and more disposable income
most of all i want to be part of the drive for change and economic revolution

lol but really if you put your mind to it and dont allow yourself to make comparisons with all the uk and usa you have been you will be fine, now that you can send cars of up to 15 years old to nigeria there are a lot of very very cheap cars that you can just send to use untill you get the proper nice car you are after.one thing i realised with naija is that ,there is nothing like impossibility or cant cope if you suck it up and stick with it,you had those experience because you are on holidays and you r not used to the way things are
Busy_body:

Honestly, my blind loyalty to that Country is waning soooo fast, read some story about the length the Police would go to extort money from people, for example, accosting a guy who's just dropping off his babe and accusing them of banging in the car and then proceeding to strip the girl unclothed just to force the boyfriend to bribe them to free her girl undecided or maybe I should stop visiting the Politics section sha undecided
dont mind those prophet of doom in the politic section,if you do a proper analysis you will realise that most of the people spreading the doom and gloom have not been to nigeria in eons of years and only pick and choose stories they find littering the internet.while i am not saying that these incidents do not happen or justifying them they are isolated incidents.if the police killed people everyday like its been reported how many people will be left alive in lagos?
look at the time a woman used her car to hit a police woman, nobody publicised that
countless times people have slapped policemen,in fact my late mum was a culprit of that one lol nobody talks about that one
police have accosted me with pounds in my pocket, they tried acting funny but as soon as they searched me they had no reason to hold me they let me go
last year a policeman stopped me on my way to sort out my ticket under the bridge opposite ayinke house at ikeja general hospital,he was huffing and puffing i didnt answer him,he called me yahoo yahoo when he saw my passport and some other papers i had with me i didnt answer when his oga came i defended every single paper and the money with my ticket the man just told me to go but for me to be careful with my documents and begged me for money but i ignored the guy.
the police most times cant do anything and cant extort money from you unless they have been able to find something untoward
Busy_body:

Kudos to you for not restricting yourself to just searching for jobs but rather creating one for yourself, thats the spirit babyboy kiss
abi o,im telling you there s a whole lot of busineses one can do out there,i also have that implicit believe that we diasporeans are th ones that will stimulate the economy and kick start the middle class revolution in nigeria because presently its only working class and high class

Can you please elaborate on the last line of your comment? I wanted to reply but I was having multiple thoughts on what exactly it is that you're trying to say. As for the beginning of your respond, I wasn't saying that your response was a cop out--I do agree that it was written from a European perspective which was why I pointed out earlier that the African perspective on homosexuality was not the same as the European perspective. In many of those cultures, homosexuality wasn't even viewed as this evil thing that Europeans made it out to be. I even made note of "Hungochani: The History Of A Dissident Sexuality In Southern Africa" by Marc Epprecht which references the southern region of Africa. I believe the book make references to the Shona and Lovedu people. You might also wanna look into a writer named Munyaradzi B. Munochiveyi who wrote an article on homosexuality in pre-colonial Zimbabwe. Keep in mind, I'm not saying that homosexuality is something that was widely accepted in all parts of pre-colonial Africa. I'm sure in some parts it wasn't as accepted as other regions but that still doesn't despite the fact that in general it existed in Africa.

the first reported cases of hiv/aids amongst humans was first discovered in the united states in the early eighties and the spread was initially amongst the homosexual community then because they didnt bother with protection.
note that even though there were cases of hiv found in africa they did not contact it through sxual liasons but throuh the original source of the virus i.e the primate and this was through either eating it or the blood coming in contact with open sores/wounds of the hunters
Nija4Life:

Looking at the bigger picture, this goes to show that if we fail to write our own history others will do it for us. But in saying that I would be very cautious in taking some of the sources you have provided as facts because in my view they may well represent a distorted account of our own history. However, it provides further proof about the failings of our educational system.  I fear for our children and future generations, we complain they no longer speak our language; I think we should be more worried because they may have no history to read about.

note that even though there were cases of hiv found in africa they did not contact it through sxual liasons but throuh the original source of the virus i.e the primate and this was through either eating it or the blood coming in contact with open sores/wounds of the hunters

Equal right ko. My advise here would be for the woman to frustrate the man to steal the child tongue and then go for the Hague Convention route to protect her child from being abducted by the Dad. The child's best interest or welfare is not paramount here because his safety plays a greater role for concern. The Court would have to decree that under the terms of the Hague Convention, the child must remain with Mum because that is where he/she has spent more time since birth.
en hen so you r saying there are no wicked mothers abi?besides the fact that they are using lenght of time to make such a determinant means there is already inequality before the law o after you gys will be touting your ISMS and talking about glass ceiling
Busy_body:

If he still wants access or custody, he would have to go to Court, but he would not be able to take the child out of the Country again, meaning unless he is ready to start living permanently in the UK, he would have no choice than to surrender the child back to Mum solely, which the Court could use to deem him unserious in the first place.

Saying this though, the law can swing both ways and it might be the Dad that gets custody under the Hague Convention if he was the one who has been raising the child and Mum thief the pickin, this means Mum would have to relocate to Naija at the expense of Dad, and Dad would be legally responsible for Mum's upkeep and child maintenance.

Kinda like a win win situation for Mum, nice one grin WE RULE THE WORLD, WE RUN THINGS, YEAH tongue cheesy
ok wait,as a woman if the child would have a better and more stable life with the dad in nigeria living in luxury while mum is nt stable financially or even psychologically in uk where would you rather the child be?
look at the boy that was used for ritual,or that climbie girl that was torturedto death
remember the girl that was kidnapped by her mum near me in liverpool
or the yeye american woman that murdered 3 children in cold blood because of custody
Busy_body:

We are talking Nigerian man here, wetin consain a typical self-absorbed, vain, feckless, philandering naija man and i speak for 97% of all Nigerian men here with pickin. I believe the dude is only after the child to punish the Mum or wants to use the child for money ritual tongue or his new wife wants a maid angry Seriously, it is rare to see a Naija man who wants custody jare, instead they will either bring another wife into the family not caring how the first wife is supposed to fend for herself or just come home one day and throw the woman with the kids out onto the streets, abi no be so dem dey divorce for obodo NAija cheesy
olopa ewon tepe grin grin thank GOD you r not ukba o,or else no naija man will ever enter the uk looool its not all or even most naija men that fit your description o,maybe some its like using the naija woman stereotype to tar every naija woman.out of ten i can bet you 8 naija men really love their child and genuinely want to be a part of their child's life.besides what me im on about i equal acess not the man taking the child or vice versa.if you ask me i think the governmen r scared of touching that law because of women lib's voting power.

i remember one time during undergrad in uni when we were in seminar, the lecturer asked us what we thought of women's liberation, you know oyinbo girls they v quicklyjumped up and started defending, the mumu guys there same thing, the only comment i made was that if women wanted equality then they shouldnt expect men to pull ut the chair for them to sit,or pull the door open n stuffs you need to see the way the lecturer burst out laughing the girls cheeks turn red straight lol
Busy_body:

The man that gave birth in Dublin usewisdom was an exception to the rule i.e. an ebora grin, abi na natural phenomenon cheesy You men nor fit born pickin without some intervention jare cheesy

THIS IS FOR THE BENEFIT OF PROFESSIONAL NAY SAYERS WHO CANT SEE ANYTHING GOOD WITH OKOROCHA

Imo State Government has slashed the annual security vote of N6.5 billion to N2.5billion to make provision for the free education programme of the state.
This was disclosed by the Governor, Rochas Okorocha while speaking during a thanksgiving church service organized in honour of the new administration at the Maria Assumpta Cathedral, Owerri.
The governor commended the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Owerri, who was the chief celebrant of the service, for standing by the truth always and enjoined him to always assist in guiding the government aright.

Governor Okorocha admitted that his administration would live by the tenets of sacrifice as exhibited by Christ, and would use every accruable fund judiciously for the uplifting of the state, adding that everybody, especially the civil servants must join hands to achieve the tasks ahead.

Earlier, Archbishop Obinna prayed for the success of the new administration and called on it to concentrate on achieving the goals of free education, agriculture, roads rehabilitation, potable water and workers’ welfare.
He enjoined Governor Okorocha to remain focused and upright in the discharge of his duties in order to meet the aspirations of the Imo people who had borne long years of deprivation and hardship in the hands of previous administrations.

The elated prelate stressed that this was the first time the peoples’ votes would count and commended the common man and the army for joining hands to defend the votes, but called on the police to live up to expectation in protecting the interests of the people.

“God has visited his people and redeemed them. The supreme might of God is shown in his supreme mercy. Only God himself can explain what made it possible for this young man to become governor of Imo. Expectations of Imo are beyond imagination. He needs to be pitied. He may not be able to work wonders,” the Archbishop said

Kilode?!:

^^ They don't have to be in a Council of State to do ANY of those things you listed.
fair enough but at least by designating a council to them collective responsibility then kicks in,not just the presidency will be expecting much of them now,but the whole of nigeria seeing as they have been designated
Kilode?!:

Advisers and leaders abound and there is no evidence to suggest that these people are wise or capable of giving great advice anyway.
true, but nothing beats experience spanning many years, lets use OBJ as an example not counting his bad sides what one we cant knock is that he has the skills to stabilise any government he has had the experience of military and civillian,he has been in coup situation, war e.t.c same goes for the other members.they will give advice its down to you as the president to take some or all of their advice
Kilode?!:

I still can't undestand why some folks believe we need to keep the same crop of people in the corridors of power all through their lifes. BTW their influence goes beyond mere powerless advice, several links and examples had been given to show that they are more than ceremonial, these people are very influential.
we need to kep them purely out of necessity, trust me no president as nigeria is presently constituted wants to rule without at least consulting them,it will be like a security guard in a jewelry store sleeping off.they are not really doing any harm as such and yes their official powers are ceremonial however you need to consider their advantages e.g stabilising the govt as the ears are to the ground.
they can broker concessions amongst the divides because of the respect they command, settle contentious issues
Kilode?!:

There must be something cultural here I'm not keying into. I think it's worth researching for those who are so inclined, might explain a lot of our problems. undecided
yes there is and not just cultural but political and its called gerontocracy
gerontocracy n. , pl. , -cies . Government based on rule by elders. A governing group of elders.
which i believe sort of ties into our culture and the position of elders

@post
i am suprised some nigerians are even questioning this initiative nor the rationale behind it as if the swiss government have any obligation to give you anything.afterwards you will be accusing the nigerian high commission in switzerland of abandoning you to your fate.
during the time of the cultural revolution in china, the country was worse than nigeria is presently, that did not stop the chinese going back to their country under chairman mao zedong. many died and many suffered but look at china now and the state of the country.
look at the ghananians,we wanted them out and they moved back to their country en mass now we are the ones hustling to go and settle in ghana the immigration even treat ghananians better than they treat nigerians.

if you dont have papers or any realistic hope of getting anything done, rather than wasting your life away in europe i will advice you to find out first if you qualify for this and if you do,go and sign for it and go back to nigeria to build your life, even if they ban you from travelling for some years you really dont need to travel for a couple of years anyway in order to build and stabilise whatever business they helpyou to set up.
making statements like "its better to be illegal abroad than being in nigeria" means you deserve whatever treatment you get in the hands of foreigners since you are ok with anything they dish out to you.dont you dare complain about racism, dearth of opportunities or no money because no one is forcing you to be there and they certainly dont want you in their country.

come to uk and ask the uk border agency to give you one $6,500,presently the i.o.m payment being given in the united kingdom was formerly about £2,500 plus or therebouts presently it is about £750 or so and they can even refuse you.
go and find out how many people are being caught everyday or languishing in detention centres
Politics / Re: Goodluck Jonathan Should Scrap The Council Of State! by lucabrasi(m): 4:27pm On Jun 05, 2011
the truth as i see it is that a nation will only work with the kind of leaders and states men available hopefully as time goes on and the nation produces more credible and upstanding statesmen the old guard will be slowly phased out.
however the function they are undertaking like others have said is purely ceremonial as they cant compel the president to do anything he doesnt want to do. the gathering is also a useful tool to harness different opinions and yearnings from different ethnic and geo political groups together
people like buhari if he means well, abdulsalami and co had be used to read out to traditional leaders in boko haram enclaves to gather intelligence, they can be used to placate particular ethnic or religious demographics and their wisdom and experiences can be put to use

Big B1:

A week in the office, just like Ogun state governor this guy has already started to promise heaven and earth.
Something tells me that this dude may not know what he's doing.
free education for selected demographics in this day and age even for a nigerian state is not "heaven and earth"its a basic divident of democracy
what has led you to the conclusion that he doesnt know what he is doing if you dont mind me asking?cause you have not offered any evidence of this
Ileke-IdI:

And Mr. Bleacher left a lot of droppings in his wake.

Esp during his last few weeks in office.
akala's peformance was no suprise to anybody especially looking at how he got there, his antecedents before he got there he even performed better than i expected at least he tarred the road of th street named after him in ibadan
Big B1:

Not saying it's not a gradual process. A state with that kind of debt should focus on better things that will bring business into it's vicinity so that it would later be financially stable to not only pay off its debt lil by lil, but also increase its economic index.
the debt profile of a state will not make it ground to a stand still, its not possible, why didnt lagos state grind to a stand still when obasanjo with held the federal allocation?
its like saying because america owes trillions in debt or britain owes hundreds of billions in debt they showuld stop the free health service.
if you have a sick child under 5 years old and you had to go for a business appointment trust me you will forget about money and sort the child out health care for the children should be first priority before anything
Big B1:

We need good roads for better and faster transportation. Atleast if we cannot get stabilized electricity in each city, we should be able to get one in the education facilities. We modify our education system for our future. I still wonder why some 1908 schools are still standing. We especially need a law that will officially curb the claws of mallams and their disrespecting cows, always walking and sh!tting around.
i assume you r on about fayemi this time and not ajimobi,if you follow fayemi on twitter and read up on what he s up to i believe he is actually sorting out some roads in fact he just wrote on his twitter last with with pictures of him and his deputy inspecting some ongoing road works he cant do everything all at once, and that is the ones i know being abroad i am sure the indigenes of the state on ground will be able to say more.
even if a state modifies his educational system for the future, there has to be a pro active drive to at least run ,update and improve on what is available at the moment.
the man has a duty not only to the future but the present crop of indigenes in different levels of the educational institution
Big B1:

Ekiti state already has a good health care, so free health care should not be a priority if we cannot afford it. Let's take care of the surface before we go deep down.
you have not shown any indication that the man is making healthcare more of a priority than any other sector

i was thinking about this as well and i think its a really serious issue with GEJ seem to be totally clueless about.you cannot defeat terrorism by bein reactive but being pro active.
the government needs to have a seperate unit dedicated to terrorism and spend more money on an intelligence led assault you dont go crushing the group and naively believe they will all desist they have simply gone underground and now they have sleeper units just like mid east terrorists abroad and then undertake flash attacks and go underground.
there are a lot of nigerians all round the world who are eminently qualified terrorism experts

Ileke-IdI:

Just like ow Fayemi was going on about his free education and free health.

abegi! Make we heard word jare. Better time fixing roads, IMO.

So if every state is proposing free this and free that, where will the money be coming from?
and you can publicly state without fear of contradiction that fayemi has not done anything at all concerning free education and health?
ihope you realise that governance is a gradual process, the only place where free healthcare has absolutely worked in the world that i know of is the united kingdom's national health service do you know it took well over 100 years to achieve this and the nhs budget alone more than the entire budget of nigeria.
if you want them to implement free health and education including fixing roads, then tell your president and his appointees and legislators to stop the monumental waste of money and give states more autonomy!
JAZES:

i think its a step in the right direction,
for once make we appreciate the governor first now.
If he no come work, we go come throw am stone later.
makes sense share your sentiments as well good things are coming to nigeria

queensmith:

Im not saying its not alot of money- im saying too much is still wasted on things such as the FGs expenditure and the maintanance of the fct that could do better channeled into individual states.
What state does Nepa or phcn belong to?? There are many things with no direct establishment of responsibilities or funding. If nigeria is a federation why should some states have free education while other states don't? What sense does that make?
We might as well accept an increased independance so we can directly assign responsibility to inactive departments on a local level.
Things should be free ooo! I dont even want anyone to say otherwise. You probably speak like that because you are unaware of how the majority of the people liive in that country. The conditions are absolutely horrible for some ,yet nobody knows where to go or who is responsible.
The bill of rights and all the other things you mentiones will mean nothing to me unless it fully illegitimizes failure of governments in providing free education, healthcare, food and watr. Everything else is wasted ink
totally agree with you on your assertions besides if you go back to the time of western/eastern/northern region when the govt wasnt this centralised the various regions all did what was expected of them, healthcare and education was running smoothly untill the system of governance was jettisoned.
look at the state of federal roads in lagos and then compare it with the state roads
same goes for the contentious issue of phcn and power generation and distribution which has handicapped the likes of rivers state/lagos state amongst others.
lets hope the prototype of regional style government ACN controlled states are trying to embark on work, then GEJ will have no choice than to give states more power and autonomy at least in healthcare, education, electricity.

the so called centre is a total waste of money and resources, they grab all the allocations accruing to the nation and we dont see commensurate benefits im at a loss and puzzled how anybody will justify or defend this
