Travel › Debris Found From F-35 Jet In South Carolina After US Pilot Ejected by Luckysbab(op): 2:22am On Sep 19, 2023
Military officials have found the debris of an F-35 military jet that went missing after the pilot ejected over South Carolina.

The debris of the $100m (£80m) plane - which disappeared on Sunday afternoon - was discovered in rural Williamsburg County, said authorities.

The pilot ejected from the cockpit and parachuted to safety in a North Charleston neighbourhood.

The public had been asked to help find the jet.

In a statement on Monday, military officials said the debris was found "two hours north-east of Joint Base Charleston".

Officials had focused their searches around Lake Moultrie and Lake Marion, north of the city of Charleston - the jet's last known location.

The debris found has been confirmed as the wreckage of the missing plane, a military spokesperson told the BBC.

Officials said the aircraft was involved in a "mishap" which they are currently investigating but did not offer details of what the mishap was.

The public has been asked to keep away from the area to allow investigators to do their work.

The fighter jet was left in autopilot mode when the pilot ejected, a spokesman at Joint Base Charleston told NBC News, adding that it may have been airborne for some time, complicating its discovery.

"A plausible sequence of events is that when the pilot ejected, the electronics for the transponder were fried and thus the military was no longer able to track its location," JJ Gertler, a senior analyst at the Teal Group, a defence consultancy, told the BBC during the search for the plane.

"The entire cockpit would have been subjected to rocket exhaust and so all of the electronics, the chips, may well have not survived that, including the system that signals where the airplane is," Mr Gertler said.

"If it did go into water, that signal would not be able to be found," he added.Mr Gutler said it is possible that the aircraft continued flying after the pilot ejected but that it was "extremely unlikely" due to "the damage the aircraft would have received from the ejection seat" and "the change in aerodynamics when the canopy is gone".

The plane belonged to the Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 501, which works to train pilots, CNN reported.

A second F-35 flying at the same time returned safely to base.

Joint Base Charleston had posted on X - formerly Twitter - asking the public for help to find the aircraft.

The request led to mockery online and criticism from lawmakers.

Nancy Mace, a Republican congresswoman for South Carolina, asked on X, formerly Twitter: "How in the hell do you lose an F-35?

"How is there not a tracking device and we're asking the public to what, find a jet and turn it in?"

The aircraft is a stealth jet - meaning its airframe, sensors and systems are designed to operate undetected by enemy radar.

Earlier on Monday, the US Marine Corps announced a two-day pause in air operations throughout the military branch this week.

A Marine Corps press release on Monday said officials plan to "discuss aviation safety matters and best practices" sometime this week."During the safety stand down, aviation commanders will lead discussions with their Marines focusing on the fundamentals of safe flight operations," said the press release.

In 2018, the US military temporarily grounded its entire fleet of F-35 jets after a crash in South Carolina.

No. It’s a travesty that the tribunal directly went in opposition to the grounds of what was established at the recent judgement - a party’s primaries to pick a candidate is entirely an internal affair, plus it is a pre-election matter.

first of all, let’s leave all these “…if she was an American, if she was British” everything is not about that please.

Emotions and sentiments aside, from the statements of the airline and even the family, I think due process and protocol was followed here, atleast reasonably. You have to understand how such emergency cases works especially when it involves casualties resulting in death it becomes more complicated and everyone is trying to be careful to avoid more complexities. The family for example can’t be bombarding the airline with calls, probably calling the call center and customer service who might not even have known about the incident nor have been briefed about it. Even if they might have known about the incident they clearly might not be authorized to speak on it for obvious reasons, and to avoid further complications especially when the matter is already between the aviation police, the immigration and the embassy. We have lots of such situations even here in Nigeria.

With the process and protocol already in existence, all the family have to do is to liaise with the embassy to investigate the situation leading to death, carry out an autopsy and work towards repatriation of the corpse. That’s all. Having reported to the aviation police at arrival, immigration down to the embassy, the airline has done its part.

Let’s leave all these “…Arabs are wicked; EGYPTAIR should be banned; if she was an American” and all that. Nigerians we too get victim mentality abeg. We too sabi rant and complain without properly understanding and analyzing a situation critically.
We should leave reality for your own stereotype of ‘’… we too like victim mentality’’?

Shut up please!

Am I the only one here who seem not to actually understand the Justice they are seeking for?🤷🏾‍♂️ Na EGYPTAIR kill am? Instead of carrying out an autopsy to determine the actual cause of death then make arrangements to repatriate the corpse back home for burial they are seeking for Justice where there clearly seem to be no wrong.

The only question to ask here is why was the family not contacted first. Then again, did she fully provide adequate emergency contact details as required for all ticket reservation and itineraries. To the best of my knowledge most Nigerians don’t! -just like passenger manifests on road transport services. Many will outrightly refuse to fill, while others will reluctantly fill in non existent numbers. I have seen it severally in the aviation industry as well. Also most travel agencies and ticketing agents don’t even bother to ask their customers for proper emergency contact details. They just fill in obscure details there.

So for the airline to have contacted the consulate which is the next line of action shows that they’ve first tried contacting her emergency contacts. Infact from my experience in the aviation industry, the first thing the airline does in this situation is involving the aviation police and immigration services and handing over all the passenger details available. It is now the duty of the police to contact her family depending on the nature of the emergency, and in the case where the family could not be reached the next step is contacting the embassy which is clearly the case here. There is no way the embassy would’ve been contacted without attempts to contact her family first.

So based on the communication with the consulate her body was deposited somewhere pending when the consulate is able to contact and locate her family for arrangements on the repatriation of the corpse.

So what Justice are they seeking here please?🤷🏾‍♂️
I also don’t even understand the insults, bashing and dragging of EGYPTAIR and even Egypt government here🤦🏾‍♂️
So why were they avoiding communications when the family reached out to them? Is that how they would have handled it if she were American?

Egypt Air is not to blame because at least they put her in a hospital. Some airline will not even allow you to leave the airport especially if you are a Nigerian citizen. I caught a transit flight and I had to wait 12 hours in the airport for my connecting flight. One thing you must know once travelling with a Nigerian passport you are at your own risk. They will not even allow you to leave the departure lounge for 12 hours because of your passport. Let's stop blaming other country and blame ourselves for our stupidity.

You cannot run to another man's land and start opening your mouth when in your own country you are a piece of shit. Immediately that girl was sick Nigerian Embassy should have stepped in and provided medical treatment for her in Egypt not to leave the situation today airline. What good is the embassies abroad which are decoration only for corrupt politicians. The embassy is to play not the airline as vigorously as your citizen for sick the empathy is notified and supposed to Spring into action. But as usual the illiterate Nigerian citizen wanted the airline to do the job of the embassy this.

This is the stupidity with Nigerian people all over the world they vote for idiots and never go to the idiot they want another person to take care of them bunch of illiterate coconut head. All over the world it is the same thing with Nigerian people when it's time to vote they become stupid and vote for themselves after when they want other countries to take care of them they want other countries to give them job the Nigerian idiot which day vote for can do nothing forward them.

Please what is the business with Egypt airline for Egypt country don't you have a fucking government which you vote for why don't you go to them to solve your problem. This is the stupidity of 95% of Nigerians all over the world the word for idiot and start blaming other countries when the idiot can do nothing for them they will never go to the idiot which they vote for. It’s one thing to make laws, another to see it through. This is from Human Rights Watch:

‘’ Nigeria’s rates of child marriage are some of the highest on the African continent. Although the federal Child Rights Act (CRA, 2003) prohibits marriage below age 18, the Nigerian constitution contains provisions which appear to conflict with this position. States with Islamic legal systems have also failed to adopt both the federal law and 18 as the age of majority for marriage. Some southern states which have adopted this position have failed to take adequate steps to carry it out.’’

This is the worldwide statistics:

‘’Globally 39,000 girls under the age of 18 years are married daily and 14.2 million girls annually [1]. More than 700 million women alive worldwide were married before age 18 [2]. The highest prevalence of girl-child marriage is in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa [2]. Early marriage violates the human rights of the girl-child, increases her risk of maternal morbidity and mortality, and robs her of educational and developmental opportunities [3,4,5].’’
