EducationRe: Why Private Universities Are Stronger In Nigeria - The Nation by Lyoncrescent: 6:10pm On May 11, 2017
Handsomecole:
Private Universities are meant for the rich and only those that can afford it, it's also meant for the lazy rich kids who couldn't pass simple jamb or post UTME.
Even at that we still have the rich coming to Federal Universities to study because they know it's worth. Using OAU as an example ; I know many Govtt officials even law makers who come to the school to get one degree or the other. Infact we have rich parents who still send their kids to these Federal schools cos they know it's worth.
I can't imagine myself leaving OAU cert for one convenant cert when am not mad. Even in the aspect of ICT Internet access has been made so easy these days so u don't have to wait for your school to give you a laptop and free WiFi before you'll do your research. Private schools are comfortable no doubt but in terms of research and academic aspects please don't go there.
The only way to settle oau cert and covenant cert is to meet on a level playing field. If you study accounting in oau and I study my own in covenant, let us both do our acca or maybe cfa. If we both pass at first attempt then we can agree we are both good. If I pass and you fail or the other way around, we can also draw conclusions. The mistake people in public universities make is they believe education should be difficult. It shoudnt. Edcuatuon should be relevant. I've seen brilliant students from oau and unilorin graduate with 2:2. When we all met in the UK for masters, we all had distinction . Does that mean unilorin is better than Warwick ? Education is all about relevance not difficulty and only way you can judge is when graduates from both schools meet on a level playing ground

Furthermore, OAU has been churning out graduates for decades so they have a richer and higher pool alumni hence the perception people have. Give Babcock and covenant graduates more time . Babcock gradauted it's first set in 2003..that's just 14 years ago. Give us 6 years more then you will know how far. Even some organizations specify Babcock and covenant gradautes . So this oba awon university crap won't last much longer. Past glory will soon end.
EducationRe: Why Private Universities Are Stronger In Nigeria - The Nation by Lyoncrescent: 6:02pm On May 11, 2017
Public universities are heavily subsidized by government . Imagine unilag paying 35 k as school fees. That's less than 100 dollars.assuming unilag has 30000 students , that comes to about 3 million dollars. Of course unilag generates revenue from other means apart from tuition but tuition is the main part and I am using undergraduate fees as an example. Do you think 5 million dollars(assuming revenue from other sources is 2 million ) not to even talk of three million is enough for unilag alone?. They will pay over 800 staff both academic and non academic and buy vehicles and improve infrastructure and conduct research and buy diesel etc. Professor okebukola once said in channels tv some Years ago as nuc head that if government should stop funding unilag, the averaage tuition fee will be at least 300,000 naira per session. However due to the poverty level in Nigeria, government has no option. So before you think your public university education is cheap, think again . It's not cheap. It is just being subsidized. That being said, with the exception of Lagos business school,no higher institution in Nigeria is close to global standards and of course Lagos business school is private and Damn expensive because like I said earlier it is not subsidized by the government

Hi kalan , a friend has a bsc in sociology from unilorin and will like to do her masters in industrial and personnel relations or hr in unilag. The problem is that she is currently a Corp member and is due to end her service sometime in October or latest November this year depending on the official passing out date. She is stream 1 2016 batch B nysc. Someone told her discharge certificate is a requirement for filling the masters form in unilag but I am thinking that since she will be done with nysc before the actual msc program begins hopefully there may be a way around this. your advice is kindly needed .Thanks

This should have been done in the day or evening. So many of these women keep proceeds of their sales in their shops and it's highly insensitive for their goods to have been destroyed alongside the buildings. I won't be suprised if this was a conspiracy between some developers and the ikorodu local government in conjunction with an insider in alausa. This one won't trend or make front page cos it's not nuli juice. I hope seun and lalastica push this to front page to raise social consciousness that even if the demolition was necessary the manner it was done is demonic. Over to you modetators. Mynd44 and OAM4J

I beg to differ from majority of your assertions, even though your facts are true. Your experience have just impacted on your inference in a way that is not correct. Let me guess, "you are in the commercial field". When you talk of Lagos business school, yes their strength is those certification you talked about but they are not comparable to their counterparts. Do you know that a Nigerian university is ranked among the top 1000 universities by Times Higher Educationhuh

2. You generalized Babcock for all Nigerian universities - a school which all indication prove is substandard to many other Nigerian universities. As for the unilag stuff, I earlier told you about my reservations (which their website is a big part of, leading to my going to their school, and they still didn't respond well), and that was not the case with CU where I finished from, I also don't think UI and "ABUAD" is so!

That said I'm not saying Nigerian universities are world class but that's no excuse for making faulty generalizations. There is no basis for comparing LBS to other Nigerian varsities since you've mentioned "their strength"; and that something is your strength don't mean that you're the best in it. The strength of every university is should be "research" (I mean standard research) irrespective of the chosen field and a good number of Nigerian universities are beginning to do that (you must have seen the OAU post on FP) - that is what will determine the particular field(s) that will be adjudged to be your strength in public's eye (its not by just waking up one morning and declaring that one particular field is your strength because that's the only focus of your institution!).

The one eyed varsities need to get their second eyes fixed but the blind ones must first get at least one eye opened. Completely generalizing and castigating all alike is not good, particularly for the one eyed varsities!
I agree. Point taken once again . I am an IT guy though. First degree computer science. I submit to the superiority of most of your points.

I went to CU, and besides being a Nigerian, I'm an Igbo, so I'm not hating. What led to this is people that always come here and spew the afonja thrash for every university news they see online simply because most southeastern universities have not been making the news for good reasons since recent times.

When you say best in what, you have to know that we ain't making a comparison in Harvard? We are simply talking about Nigerian universities and how they can improve upon their performance. Besides there are Nigerian universities that a preferred in particular areas of discipline but before you assess a varsitie's strength, it first have to be a standard university. Unfortunately, we both know that majority of the universities in southeast substandard.
Point taken. GOD help Nigerian universities in general.I pray our universities one day can be close to international standards. Of all the universities I've been too in Nigeria including Babcock, the only one that comes close although still distant in terms of research to the best international universities is the pan Atlantic university which houses the Lagos business school. How can lbs be the only school in Nigeria that has international mba accreditation s ? That's sad.Was cracking a joke with a friend the other day that if you want to run masters program in unilag and you are resident in kano, you must physically come to Lagos to process your admission. I don't know if that's true but we all know you can get admission to universities in the UK and USA without ever stepping out of Nigeria until you are about to resume . How many Nigerian universities even have standard and informative websites. something as basic. As that .Your point is valid as one eyed south west universities maybe good in the land of blind universities . GOD help us.

All the best universities in Nigeria are in south west. And almost all the "good" universities in the country right now are in south west. So, what do you think?
Question I will ask you is best in what ? Harvard business school has one of the best MBA programs in the world same with London business school. Our own Lagos business school has one of the best MBA programs in Nigeria with their recent aacsb and amba accreditationsthat no other business school in Nigeria has. Every top business school in the world has at least aacsb, amba or equius accreditation. Universities need to have a niche field of excellence then build their reputation and branding from there. Not every course offered by Harvard is the best. So when you say good universities in Nigeria are in south west , I ask good in what ? There are brilliant and employable students in every university and better believe that if your parents can afford to pay Babcock and covenant school fees, they will do everything in their power to get you a job after graduation or sponsor you overseas for a masters degree. That masters degree may be the one that actually influences employability and not the first degree. I went to Babcock so I'm not hating.

11 of the top 20 are from the south west

1 from North East

1 from North west

1from North central

4 from south east

2 from south south

That's over interesting. I read the report and I think the methodology used is not convincing. I also see they at least tried to balance federal character by ensuring there is at least one representative from each geo political zone in the top 20

Talent dey. How in the name of God did you come up with this story. The names and the stories and the backstories. Nigeria is blessed . This is an excellent write up. International standard. I am overly impressed. More updates please. Maybe you should attend a film school for production and directing so you can bring this story to the big screen sometime in the future.

We need to keep things tight at the back and especially in midfield in the second half if we must win this game with ease. Matic and Kante may not be as strong as Wanyama and Dembele but they sure are smarter. Dele Alli and Eriksen had too much space to roam in the first half and trippier was feeling fly more than necessary.

Conte should learn to keep a keen eye on the on-field game pattern and not focus on his watch or occupy his mind with when the next goal would be scored. When your initial tactics is not working as expected, as a sound manager, you should be able to remodify using the same set of players.
You remind me of all these English pundits that cannot coach or manage a team to save their lives. You are entitled to your opinion but conte is boss and he knows best and what's he's doing.

You obtained a U.K. residence permit... red flag.
Red flag how. when i schooled in the UK, i was entitled to apply for a post study visa to replace my student visa.it was the norm then and an extension of the fresh talent scheme for students who schooled in scotland( you can google it). i had to leave 800 pounds in my uk account for three months and fill a form and all that. At no point was the balance allowed to go below 800 pounds which was the requirement. This was done from the end of my program in september till november. i applied for the post study visa with the bank statement and all in december and i got it in january. On the visa it is boldly written residence permit. same january i came back to naija on my own and visited the UK a couple of times for vacation till the visa expired.

Sorry for the epistle but just wanted to make things clear so you can explain the red flag at least for others who may be in a similar situation as i said i am not applying again

Thanks LadyGuniverse for your reply and effort on this thread. I can afford it but i dont think i want to apply again. The ties thing is one funny business and if their tie is marriage as i am not sure what it is , that one sef is not happening anytime soon. In addition My brother is going with my sister since his own visa got approved and my brother in laws mum also got a visa for the same purpose. I think both families will be well represented cheesy. Even my family members this morning were livid and told me to apply again Asap but i just laughed it over and calmed them down. no be just graduation. It would have been nice to go though cos they all attended my own graduation. Will do the Dubai Visa and spend my summer there. Maybe when i go for an executive education program at harvard or wharton business school in the near future, i will apply again but for now its not a do a die affair, which is why i am not applying again.

Hi all, I got the blue slip today. I work in a federal agency and earn about 360k monthly and had my masters degree in the UK after which I obtained a two year residence permit from which I returned back to Nigeria . The permit expired in 2012.I relocated to Nigeria as soon as I got my residence permit in but used it to visit the UK on a couple of ocassions as the immigration stamps would prove. I have also been to Dubai for vacation.I am the head of IT service Management in my organization

Transcript

Vo:morning. Passport please

Me: morning and gave him my new passport with no visas and th old one with visas. He accepted both

Vo: where are you go to in the USA

Me: I am going to new haven Connecticut to attend my sisters husbands graduation from Yale school of management, Yale university

Vo: where do you work

Me: told him and explained my duties as filled in my form and even mentioned some well known service providers I interact with in my office. Also mentioned I have been working there for four years.

Vo: what were you doing in the UK while scanning through my old passport

Me: I told him I schooled there for a year after which I returned to Nigeria. I only used the residence permit for visiting purposes to the UK when I came back to Nigeria after my masters.

Vo: are you married

Me: no I am not married

Vo: sorry you are not bla bla bla and handed me over a blue slip. He said something about ties I didn't really hear well.

I think the system allows vos to use discretion. This was my first time applying for a USA visa. No documents were checked. My colleague at work got his visa on Monday and he has never travelled out of the country before and he said he is going to attend his cousins graduation. my brother however got interviewed in a different window and got his visa approved for the same purpose with Dubai and Kenya being his travel history and my brother is not married too.My brother runs his own travel agency which he has done for three years. I think that's a good example of a positive discretion. I don't think I will be applying again as I don't have any other need to visit the USA at this moment .Will be going to Dubai instead for summer and Sun. God bless Nigeria. God bless America and everywhere else. cool

The popular acceptance and even admiration for corruption was highlighted in Chinua Achebe’s novel about the politicians of the First Republic, A Man of the People. [b]“The people had become even more cynical than their leaders and were apathetic into the bargain. “Let them eat,’ was the people’s opinion . . . It may be your turn to eat tomorrow.

This part above is still true ever since the first republic till now. I sincerely think there is very little hope in Nigeria being a developed Nation in the next 50 years. Its just sad. In the words of Sonny Okosun, We are still waiting for the wind of change and which way Nigeria ?

My brother in law is graduating from Yale Uni in May and he invited me with an invitation letter to attend his graduation though he also said his school insists it is not required for visa application. I work for a Federal Agency and earn 350k per month. Been working in this Agency for four years and i had my masters degree in the UK. I also visited the UK for vacation few years after my Masters Degree. I will be paying for my flight and accommodation and intend to stay for one week if i eventually attend his grad. However, i am weighing my options whether i should apply or not as i am not married and i dont know if that alone may disqualify me as not having enough ties. I really want to go for the Grad but being rejected based on marital status or the monthly income is my major concern. I know they dont often check statements or pay slips but this thread has proved that self evaluation is better so one doesn't waste visa application fees. Please advice.
