BoneBlogger:
Former US president, Barack Obama is set to visit Africa again for some events. The visit is the first time the former leader will be traveling to Africa since he left office last year.

Barack Obama will launch a civic leadership programme by the Obama Foundation after selecting 200 rising leaders from forty-four African countries. The programme will be launched by former US President Barrack Obama on July 14 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Obama took to his social media page to hail late Nigerian novelist Chinua Achebe among others ahead of his visit.

Read what he shared below;

This week, I’m traveling to Africa for the first time since I left office – a continent of wonderful diversity, thriving culture, and remarkable stories.

I was proud to visit sub-Saharan Africa more times than any other sitting President, and I’ll return this week to visit Kenya and South Africa. In South Africa, the Obama Foundation will convene 200 extraordinary young leaders from across the continent and I’ll deliver a speech to mark the 100th anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s birth. Kenya, of course, is the Obama ancestral home. I visited for the first time when I was in my twenties and I was profoundly influenced by my experiences – a journey I wrote about in my first book, Dreams from My Father.

Over the years since, I've often drawn inspiration from Africa's extraordinary literary tradition. As I prepare for this trip, I wanted to share a list of books that I’d recommend for summer reading, including some from a number of Africa’s best writers and thinkers – each of whom illuminate our world in powerful and unique ways.

Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe

A true classic of world literature, this novel paints a picture of traditional society wrestling with the arrival of foreign influence, from Christian missionaries to British colonialism. A masterpiece that has inspired generations of writers in Nigeria, across Africa, and around the world.

A Grain of Wheat by Ngugi wa Thiong’o

A chronicle of the events leading up to Kenya’s independence, and a compelling story of how the transformative events of history weigh on individual lives and relationships.

Long Walk to Freedom by Nelson Mandela

Mandela’s life was one of the epic stories of the 20th century. This definitive memoir traces the arc of his life from a small village, to his years as a revolutionary, to his long imprisonment, and ultimately his ascension to unifying President, leader, and global icon. Essential reading for anyone who wants to understand history – and then go out and change it.

Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

From one of the world’s great contemporary writers comes the story of two Nigerians making their way in the U.S. and the UK, raising universal questions of race and belonging, the overseas experience for the African diaspora, and the search for identity and a home.

If the port was so viable, Igbos themselves, the rich ones amongst y'all, would not need the FG to get it working. They would pull resources and get it done. I repeat, the largest consumer markets in Nigeria are in the SW, North, and SS (in that order). Those are where the BULK of Nigerian consumers are, not Onitsha. Name the commodity, be it kerosene, packaged condiments or whatever, the REAL/LARGEST consumers are closer to the larger markets, which aren't in the SE. You are not making sense at all dude.

hennyholla17:
Hello, nairalanders. I an Dada Eniola, blogger and content writer. I hope this piece makes front page because I would love to reach many people as I can... especially our Nigerian parents. Read and enjoy!
The Nigerian mentality is actually a very dangerous thing. It is exhibited by most of Nigerian parents and that's what makes them "typical Nigerian parents".
However, some youths have also been exhibiting this trait and it's more of a setback for the nation than it is a way forward.

I got inspired to write this post through the wema bank seminar I attended for the student of the faculty of science, Unilag (which I happened to be among). The CEO of wema bank spoke to us and gave some of the key points most Nigerian parents don't actually give to their children.

Before we dive further, let me take you through a very brief history of how he got to where he is today (MD/CEO, WEMA BANK).

He graduated from secondary school as a division 1 student (distinction). He grew up with his uncle in Lagos who happened to sponsor his education. He was aspiring to study pharmacy in The University of Lagos. He tried first time and didn't get admission, second time same thing happened.

Third time, he was not admitted for pharmacy but he had the option to study biochemistry. Due to some reasons, he couldn't study it and his only option was chemistry science.

He took up the admission but wasn't happy in his first year because that wasn't his choice (because of the mentality around science courses). In Nigeria, people believe that engineering courses and medical courses are the best for any science student.

As such, most parents force their children into these fields, not caring about the potential the child carries. Well, he later graduated as a second class upper student (2.1).

He went further to do chemical engineering in as a postgraduate course in same UNILAG and wanted to work alongside his brother but was advised to go into accounting. He took ICAN an passed on first attempt.
He applied as the general assistant manager of a company but was given the post of an analyst. Gradually, with his hardwork, he rose to the general assistant manager and later moved to Skye bank where he held a very important role.

From Skye bank, he became the CEO of wema bank and gave them their place among the Africa's best banks. Wema bank is the first ever fully digital bank in Africa and this was achieved under his leadership.

Do you know the beautiful thing? Someone asked him a question saying: "What do you regret not doing in the university". His reply was a little bit shocking. He replied: "Not starting my own business".

For someone of his profile and achievement, you shouldn't be bothered about why you didn't make money in University, but he was.

Businesses don't generally mean selling products, services are also businesses. If you have have a talent or potential, try to develop that. All the richest men in the world are as a product of initiative and talent.
So many people have fallen due to studying the wrong courses. If all Nigerians are doctors, lawyers, accountants and engineers, who will be the surveyors, artists, forensics, entertainers, bloggers, geeks, footballer and most especially - teachers.

Parents should learn to identify the potential of a child before advising them to study a course. They push youths to study courses they are not interested in and end up becoming job seekers. Yet, we blame the government for not providing enough jobs.
Why can't we blame the parents for not providing enough minds.

Let the youths also learn to voice out their thoughts and be independent.
" It is better to live a happy life doing what you love than to be filthy rich doing what you hate." - Naijafalcon

Talents should not be wasted. Instead, they should be trained. If Nigerians want to compete among the top countries, it has to start from the youths. Doctors, lawyers, engineers and accountants will work with governments and institutions...they earn salary and are at risk of getting sacked anytime.

But self made men own their businesses, they dictate how their lives will be run. They have the potential to compete among the big names because they earn with what they enjoy doing most. If a child doesn't want to be a doctor, he shouldn't be forced to do so. Let's learn to train them and give them the right knowledge but education is equally important.

The only difference between a mechanic and a mechanical engineer is a laminated paper. This is the usefulness of education. It helps you to stand firm and defend yourself, it doesn't dictate how you love your life, how much you earn or how happy you will be.
Let's learn right. #NFNaijaYouthDevelopment

babaolofin:
You are totally wrong. Anybody that had lived in Lagos or Ibadan for a long time can claim to be a Yoruba. We know them even in their imagination. From the first day this propaganda began, I said only the issuing authority (NYSC) can determine the authenticity of the certificate. Few days later, the NYSC said she applied for exemption. Only Onitsha or Ariara or Alaba uncivilized, crude & unexposed traders make illogical noise.

Certificates are printed through specimen design. Only court of law & issuing authority can decide the authenticity. Only fools make noise without reasons. When buhari recovered from sickness people visited him, ibos said it was a Photoshoped picture, another set visited him, they said it was photoshoped, when he came back, they said he was a cloned (jibrin) human being because they expected him dead. There is nothing you can tell such people contrary to what they expected that is acceptable to them. They always get wrong results, the god of Nigeria is against them.

Certificate of exemption that is very easy to obtain is now a propaganda issue. Different types of certificate issued in different States or batches under different circumstances may differ depending upon what is available. It is left to the authority to confirm. The woman never lobbied to become a commissioner or minister and she was not jobless before being invited to serve. Her performance has become a threat to them.

During Obj era, Chief (Mrs) Bolaji Osomo as the Minister for Housing was removed by Obj without trial over sales of FG houses in Lagos that was shared at Party (PDP) level. She appeared before Senator Okechukwu Obiora led Senate Committee on Housing thrice. If the Senator were to be other tribe and the woman an IBO, there would have been IBO crying of marginalization as well. During Yar'adua, Prof (Mrs) Nike Grange was removed from office because of =N=20M naira support to health committees of National Assembly. Both Mrs Osomo & Grange wept bitterly.

During Jonathan, because they want loot Nigeria, the first casualty was Bola Onagoruwa, the DG of BPE over the privatization of Eleme Petrochemical company which she did not have power to take any decision. Later in that government a lot happened. We have the cases of Diezani, Arunma Otteh, Stella Oduah & others. The painful scenarios were the cases of Oduah, Diezani & one woman at the prison service.

At the public hearing of Oduah by the HOR, the Nigerian Customs CG said they did not pay duty while the inflated price at NCAA included duty. The dealer (Choscaris) claimed the Minister of Finance gave duty waiver on the vehicle, the Finance woman said no waiver was given. Later, they said they used waiver granted to Lagos State for National Sport Festival, an event that had gone without any link at all to NCAA. I had posted that time that If Elizade motors had smuggled in motors for an Ondo State Minister using Anambra State organized sport festival as a cover, Nigeria would have scattered with propaganda. They defended the woman until she was released to prepare for her Senatorial election. That was long after the episode. Arunma Otteh was defended until GEJ was leaving to save her from PMB's trial.
U buhari supporters strong sha
Dora Akunyili(God bless her soul) destroyed many igbo men's businesses ala fake drugs yet not one igbo man chanted tribalism
If cert of exemption is easy to acquire after 3 and half years of the anti corruption lord's rule isn't there sum tin wong(im referring to the present of course not 2009 cuz if anti corruption is really on,the minister would have been suspended pending PROPER investigations)
So stop calling Ndigbo
All Ndigbo want is their own country free from this british fraud
