Invite me to join this Group when you have launched a brand new satellite built by Igbo engineers with raw materials sourced from only Igboland and the satellite must transmit 100,000 channels all brodacasting in Igbo language. Until then, chat to my hand.

i'm apalled by the way people react to issues, especially when they start spewing tribal tirade. u can disagree with someone without using tribal insults (stupid igbo man?). you need to grow up. and who thinks oni is not an igbo name? bcoz u're a yoruba man doesn't mean u should not think beyond your region. there are names from different areas that have same spellings but different pronouciations and meanings. as for yobo and synagogue, feel free not to believe or even like joshua. tomorrow wil tell.

one thing that rankles me about nigerians is their lack of objectivity, even from people you'd ordinarily think should know. i'm not a fan of shuaibu amodu and i'm apalled by the way super eagles play. the truth is that fifa rankings have absolutely nothing to do with how well u play but how many games u play & the results u attain. with those parameters, nigeria deserves the ranking (if not better). feel free to check nigeria's results in the past year and you'd understand. put ur criticisms right!

Now how do I tell that CyberG is not posting from a cybercafe in Ojuelegba? If you live abroad and want to travel to Naija, just call up your family and friends at home to give you security tips or make security arrangements for you. Ya don't know where the rest of us may've relocated from without without raising hullabaloo. Methinks the dude (CyberG) just wanted to grab some attention. Nuff said.

New satellite service scheduled to be launched in January. It's called Cable Africa Network (CAN). It's pay tv but would be free for a while. Tight channels planned. I'd give more details and parameters when they are available. Lol.

I had never said daarsat receiver has blindscan. I only narrated what happened when I inputed MBC frequency and when I ask the receiver to scan the freq, without inputing the other nilesat frequencies, the receiver bring out all nilesat channels. At the end of that sentence, I then ask a question whether it can blindscan. I did not say it categorically that it can blindscan.
Sometimes it is good to report observations, you wouldnt know when it will be of greater help to someone reading it. If I know you will want to mis-read and mis-interprete my observations, I would have keep it to myself.

Daarsat may not have Blind Scan Function but it can surely perform NIT (Network Information Table) Scan which is standard in all modern receivers. Network Information Table is a signal sent thru one or more TPs on a satellite which informs your receiver of the TPs available from that same network which may be new or not already be imputed on your receiver smiley

Good o be back "home". It's been so long. I really feel guilty about my long silence but it's just that I've been so tied up with work that I hardly have time for anything else (even to see oga Twins who's really not at all far from me) and also I've really not been making any discoveries that I can share (since I've not been traking any birds). Jowever, Ive really missed all the great guys on this forum. I intend o buy Daarsat setup on Monday just to be able to lay hands on an HD/MP4 decoder (not that I gbadu their dry channels). I also need to read up on the pages I've missed on this thread to get mysself up to speed once again.

I dey my brother. I hope to bounce back soon if I move to the outskirts where there's enough space for satellite installations, now where I live I can only make do with 90cm (I abandoned my Nilesat at the office). Even the Daarsat cannot be installe at home now cos I have no view to the west.

Thanks for adding me to the G-group. As for your border discovery, believe me, that's like finding diamond because that dish and its accessories would all be premium quality irrespective of their age. Just find a way to resurface the dish and it should be perfect. My only concern is how you're gonna transport that Leviathan (except if you live right next door to the farm, which I doubt). wink

How far? I've sent your STB to strong. I'm expecting feedback by Wednesday. cool

Hi guys! How's the bird hunting going? I've been in the wilderness for so long. Time has really not been my friend. I hope I'm forgiven. Anyways, Easter greetings in arrears to everybody. Something happened to me on Easter day. My 1.8 meter dish i used to track Nilesat (with a lot of pain) was toppled by the cyclone that blew thru Abuja that day. Initially, I was fussing about the fact that all the channels I should get were not up and then this. Pls, is there anyone in Abuja that can join me re-track my Nilesat. If so just indicate interest here. I'd be really grateful.

@Twinstaiye
Greetings. How ya side?

I just stumbled on this thread while chilling on another juicier thread. I can't believe anyone is busy posting on this thread (just like I can't even understand how anyone can watch ANY Nigerian movie at all, wether Igbowood, Arewawood or Owambewood). It's no longer news that some people from other tribes gripe when they see Igbos excel in any venture. Anyone wey no like, stop watching Igbowood movies and go watch real-life Arewawood where they slaughter people on the streets of Bauchi and Jos like sallah ram. Bulls***. F***ing, trifling, jealous bigots. You'll never catch me on this thread again, not even in a casket. Anyone with a brain should just forget wasting their time here and spend it on something else worthwile. I'm outta here.

Talking of Nilesat, since December I have had a 1.8m Pauxis metal dish I want to use with Fuji Lnb and Strong 4661x (Though i may also get an Echolink receiver) for Nilesat and 85cm dish I want to use for Sirius or Eutelsat W3 but I just can't seem to be able to get started (I must admit it's mostly due to laziness, not lack of know-how or time). It may also be because I've not tracked any of those birds before. Can anyone in Abuja help out? Please indicate interest if you can help. (Na beg I beg oooo).

That frequency is one of the frequencies of the C Band Daar Comm./AIT feeds on Intelsat 901. Daarsat is really on Intelsat 907 Ku. I'm not sure of the correct frequencies, but I think someone else has posted them a page or two back.

@satman
Are you sure you're really female? If so let's drink to the first active female member of the FTA forum!!

@All
Daarsat is definitely on intelsat 907 KU. I've seen their setup. I first saw their gear (not yet installed) at NBC (Nigeria Broadcasting Commision) and again as installed in a private residence. Their dishes are 90cm and positioned exactly as was done for TrendTV before they switched to Eutelsat W4. Like someone earlier noted, their signals are HD (High Definition), so you will need an HD STB to detect the signals. Don Pedro Obaseki, the channel manager for Daar Movistar told me their smartcard won't work on any other decoder but theirs. I don't know how true that may be but it appears they might be FTA for a while, (if you have a HD receiver try and see if you can enjoy it now), because patronage is not very high and Daarsat are tryng to do all in their power to find a sales/marketing magic to turn things around. Personally, I would've expected them to go on SD (Standard Definition) and later, gradually cut over fully to HD. In short, they no do their home-work well.

@All
Welcome to Season 3!!! May your FTA setups kill multiple birds this season, AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!

@George D
What F Marshal means is that those satellites may require impossible-size dishes for you to track them, especially since they are on a lower arc of our horizon. Goodluck though. I would love to drink to your success.
Satellite TV Technology / Re: Official Thread of Free To Air Satellite TV (Part 2) by maddoxoj(m): 2:00am On Mar 04, 2009
@All
I think those migratory channels (RDV and co.) may be doing so for one reason; MONEY. You need to realise that majority of the FTA signals are not actually DTH strictly speaking, but are Always-On feeds fro re-broadcast stations and up-link for DTH operators like DSTV [eg. those Nigerian and Kenyan channels on Intelsat 903 receivable in Europe are actually used as feeds for DSTV's bouquet]. It appears these operators (RDV and co.) cannot afford paying for Always-On transponder space so they're constrained to arranging short leases and frequency borrowing for now. So, all their carriers need to do is to hook-up to any available TPs on different birds and supply parameters to the earth stations for down-link. Those times RDV was scrambled on NSS7 and Sirius it may have been that they were owing or the arrangement had ended but the parameters had not been removed from the TP.

George_D:

@Enigma,
We need to find out why the USALS motor can power a 1.2m dish and
not 2.4m or 3m. Perhaps we can adapt it over here to suit our needs?
In this country, the word impossible does not exist grin

I believe that should really not be a big deal if someone wants to get it done. in Europe where USALS technology is commonly used there are several satellites that are easily receivable on dishes that are 90cm and less, so it'd be quite unusual for anyone to require any dishes larger than that. I guess that's why the manufacturers have limited their production for only KU dishes. I just wish someone would take advantage of the fact that most KU and C Band FTA installations in Nigeria are done on big dishes (1.8m and larger) and develop such a product for bigger dishes. My only fear is that the thing might not sell. Take into perspective the fact that most big dish users in Naija still don't motorise their setup even as cheap as the gear come. Unless, maybe, the ease of installation and use may become an attractive selling point.

To think of it, I remember that I once had literature from a company that manufactures and supplies TVRO systems (those large, usually aluminum-alloy type dish ensembles used by big broadcasting outfits like CNN and NTA) which they touted to act very much like the USALS system. I can't remember the company's name now, but the prices of those hardware are prohibitive. Their polar mount fixed dishes start at about $1,500 while the motorised type started at about $8,000. No matter, I still believe a USALS-like setup for bigger dishes should not be quite a big deal. I think I'd try and make out time to research this, any findings would be duly posted. wink
Satellite TV Technology / Re: Official Thread of Free To Air Satellite TV (Part 2) by maddoxoj(m): 11:13pm On Feb 23, 2009
I might just add that USALS is also referred to as Diseqc 1.3 but Eutelsat the Patent holders to the DiseqC technology object seriously to it as they still believe USALS is actually an unauthorised adaptation of their patent.
Satellite TV Technology / Re: Official Thread of Free To Air Satellite TV (Part 2) by maddoxoj(m): 10:53pm On Feb 23, 2009
George_D:

All,
Here's a question on motorising dishes: Is there any particular reason why we are
still using diseqc 1.2 and external positioners with our jacks (actuators)  when we
can simply use the inbuilt positioner (USALS) in our recievers to move our dishes?
Looks like most of us don't realise that with USALS, you don't have to buy an
external positioner to store your channels one by one over a two week period.
Just a thought, though. Maybe someone needs to throw more light on this?

salamander:

It is a very good observation. But I wonder how many receivers have got the USALS facility.

ou rece
Let me see how I can break this down, , OK! The DiseqC 1 switch you use to connect multiple dishes to one receiver is the progenitor of the USALS positioner. Eutelsat developed the DiseqC 1.2 as an improvement to the DiseqC 1 by enabling a software in your receiver to move one dish to different orbital positions rather than just switch ports between different dishes. However, you will need to tweak and manually position each positon and then save them for the DiseqC motor to remember. After that, when you select each sat position the dish would automatically move to that position. However, some smart bobos like Adewest improved on the technology by upgrading it to a Universal Satellite Auto Location System (USALS). The USALS just requires you to manually track the dish to any giVen satellite, then you enter the orbital co-ordinates of the satellite, next you enter the co-ordinates of your location or city (there are provisions for doing this on any USALS enabled receiver). When that is done the USALS motor would automatically locate any other satellite for you. You don't need to manually configure or key-in their positions. The USALS motor would do all the math for you (and the hard part of nailing the bird). Some USALS motors can go H-H (Horizon to Horizon - East to West) or 90 degrees maximum angle. The sweet thing about it is that you only need the coaxial cable that goes into your Antenna In port at the back of your receiver to connect to a USALS positioner. The cable first goes into the motor-base and from there to the Lnbf, chikena! Almost all modern receivers are USALS capable (including Strong and the other easily available receivers).

That was the good news. Now the not-so-good news. USALS positioners don't come cheap. You can Google their prices. And it gets worse. USALS motors cannot drive any dish larger than 1.2 m!!!! So you're stuck to using only KU band dishes on them, no C Band as they require at least 1.5m and larger dishes. When you check the price and the limits of KU reception in these parts you'll concur with me that it's not worth it. That's why it's not hot in this parts but makes a good buy in Europe. Let's keep our fingers crossed to see if some smart Alec can develop a USALS system fro Larger dishes. I hope thus was of some heip.

@ Mr. Gem
You want translation, nde?  If you know how much money (and hard work) I put into learning Latin you would down like say dem pour you ice water. Anyway, I fit still teach you. Just arrange one Echolink receiver and Abracadabra card as you tuition fee and bring them down to me in Abuja then I might consider teaching you. @All, i tracked w6 in lagos yesterday morning freq 11653 has 56% signal strength and was stable thru out the day. But what surprised me was that RDV that just moved there has 94% signal strength. By lyngsatmap lagos and its environs are supposed to be fringe reception  areas. As it has been said on the forum before lyngsat maps may not be accurate afterall. I think one should freq of any beam that stray into Naija

Even Mr. Christian Lyngermark (Lyngsat) himself would tell you that the EIRPs reported are "official" i.e. as stated by the owners of these signals, so don't blame him. Usually, when I send updates to him, he'd contact the owners who'd then give him EIRP figures. Sometimes the owners of signals try to understate signal strength and reach to shake-off freebooters like all of us FTA forum members (especially when they're FTA signals). Other times they do so for territorial regulation purposes so as to appear to be receivable in some territories only, when they actually go much further. The moral of the story is to try your luck on any bird you fancy, especially if the signal is within your Horizon and especially if rated for anywhere in the EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) region. Even the American beams can "stray in" too.

@All
If you're having booting problems with any Strong Srt 46** STB, try downloading and loading this software on your receiver through RS-232 cable and see if it can solve your problem. I've not tried it, but I guess it might be of help to people who have the problem. you would have to register to be able to download the file. Anyone who tries can always post a feedback to let us know what happened.

.

Yes, but you seem to forget that a run-away Geo-stat bird is a major risk in Clarke's orbit. That's why dying satellites are generally de-orbited before they "run away". I never thought a LEO (Low Earth Orbit) satellite was a risk to the Geo-stats. However, space junk is increasing day by day, you don't know which way they might float.
