The problem right now the exchange rate. The naira has lost value in to our neighbors. Its more profitable to export and our neighbors buy our products really cheap and Nigerians buying it costly.

Nothing happened, just a project done without business environment study

Nigerians are too poor for such project, the percentage of Nigerians that can patronize such business are too small and widely spread to make such business a success

Is like building a 5 star hotel in say Osun or ebonyi or sokoto village and asking what killed it

Nigerians like shinny projects and don't care about their viability

Cocoa house, Buhari rail lines, Lagos blue and red lines, most state airports... Same rubbish Otti wants to build in Abia

Nigerians need to go and watch 2019 Osibanjo vs Peter obi debate again... That was were obi won me over

You don't develop by building infrastructure, malls, rail system etc

You develop by investing in your people access to credit, building basic needed infrastructure like few roads, hospitals and schools

Once the population is rich enough infrastructure would naturally come up

If Nigerians GDP per capita was $15k n above tinapa won't fail, in fact we would have 50 more
Good observation.
Economic development has to be organic to be sustainable.
The biggest danger to the economic growth of a nation is wiping out the middle class.

Excellent move!

However, concerted efforts must be brought to bear on the continuous appreciation of the naira because it is still undervalued at this rate.

Our target is between 700 and 800 to the dollar. That's what Carson has always maintained.
Serious work needs to be done on the economy. Our political leaders can't continue to coast along in office and loot money. It's no longer sustainable.

Massive moves must be made to revive industrialization, boost agriculture, strengthen security apparatuses and invest in infrastructure. Local businesses and industries need to be encouraged to become the bedrock of our economy, which in turn will take care of unemployment issues.

Anything less, is cosmetic. We have to stop putting plaster over our problems and carry out deep, invasive surgery.

As far as there's no special market where Tinubu loyalists (irrespective of tribe or religious affiliation) get their supplies for free or at a discount, then no problem.

But let Pa Fasoranti remember that not nearly 12 years ago, the same Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his band of sycophants had no compunctions about staging a protest against then President Jonathan despite the fact that the economic situation in the country then wasn't even a quarter as bad as it is now under Tinubu.

Foreign Affairs › War Has Been Good For The Russian Economy by maestro299(op): 2:23pm On Feb 24, 2024
First gloomy forecasts

When Russia first invaded Ukraine, both local and international economists sounded the alarm, predicting that the Russian Gross Domestic Product would drop by 10% in 2022. The World Bank was even more pessimistic and estimated the country's GDP would fall by more than 11%.

The experts were wrong

However, the catastrophic effects of the war on the country's economy never happened. In 2022, Russia's GDP fell by only 2.1%, according to World Bank data, compared to estimates that predicted a double-digit decline.

Russia has continued to grow

The Russian economy seems to be booming and has expanded more than the G7 countries. In 2023 it will grow by 3.6%, according to a first estimate published in early February by the State Statistics Service Rosstat.

Immune to sanctions

The country appears to have successfully weathered the consequences of the multiple sanctions that the European Union imposed on Russia after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. The objective was to increase costs and reduce the country's income to reduce its ability to finance the conflict.

A war economy

Russia's resilience demonstrates that the efforts of European partners have not achieved their goals for several reasons. On the one hand, the country has transformed its economy into a war economy, with an increase in public spending directed at defense and heavy industry. Military spending accounts for around 6% of the country's GDP, according to the Spanish newspaper El País.

New trade routes

Furthermore, Russian oil production is slightly below the pre-war level despite the European embargo. Russia has found new trade routes and direct its sales to countries that do not impose limitations, such as China and India.

Evading sanctions

Russia has also been able to evade sanctions imposed by Europe through a “shadow fleet.” Hundreds of oil tankers often unload crude oil onto ships on the high seas, making it difficult to track oil exports from the country.

Distorted economy

However, all that glitters is not gold. Experts warn that, on the one hand, Russia remains dependent on gas and oil sales. On the other hand, the country is subject to the evolution of military production, which raises doubts about what will happen when the war comes to an end.

Inflated labor market

The expansion of the defense industry has led to the creation of new jobs. In a meeting with workers in the sector in the city of Tula, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated in early February that in the last year and a half, 520,000 new defense jobs have been created, necessary to achieve production goals.

Lack of workers for the civilian industry

Including a larger workforce in the defense sector has caused a labor shortage in the civilian industry that is difficult to fill, while the unemployment rate has reached historic lows.

Demographic problems

In fact, after the outbreak of war, the mobilization of thousands of men in the army and the flight of many others has reduced the available workforce in the country. In 2022, 300,000 men were mobilized to war, and another 490,000 were recruited in 2023, according to data compiled by the Financial Times.

Inflated salaries

Faced with this shortage of workers, other economic sectors have had to raise salaries to compete with the wages of the defense industry. While this has boosted domestic demand, it has, on the other hand, increased inflationary risks.

Interest rates rise

The overheating of the Russian economy and rising prices has forced the monetary authorities to raise interest rates to 16%. “The economy was growing at a rate above its potential,” Bank of Russia Governor Elvira Nabiullina said in mid-February in a statement to Russian press.

2024 will continue to be positive

Despite the risks on the horizon, the forecasts for the year are positive. The International Monetary Fund forecasts an increase in Russia's GDP of 2.6% in 2024. This is more than double what it had estimated last October, according to the Financial Times newspaper.

Better than the Eurozone

If the forecasts are met, this growth would be three times greater than that of the eurozone. In fact, according to the latest estimates from the European Commission, the region may only grow by 0.9% this year.

Go back to the list once again and check what's the highest denominations of each currency (and population of users of each currency), You will discover that the top performing currencies do not have high face value like we have 500 NGN and 1,000 NGN in Nigeria.

Also, you will notice that the top performing currencies have coins form of currency with denomination of very low face value.

The highest of the denomination is 1000 Franc followed by 500 EUR. 1000 Franc is not in frequent use and the highest Franc denomination next to it is 200 Frank ( not like 500 NGN as we have here in nigeria ). Also the use of 500 EUR was discontinue in year 2018.

Get a hold on history of exchange rate in Nigerian, you will find out that every introduction of new high (face value) denomination currency note has adverse effect on exchange rate.

Why High Denominational Currency Note Is Bad:
1. Increase in prints of currency notes with high face value e.g 1000 NGN makes other lower currency of less important and less useful. This can gradually lead to upgrade of price of goods and services in market.

2. It makes stealing, looting and hoarding of cash easier as larger amount of money value can be packed into a very small space.

3. 500 NGN and 1000 NGN are no money for the common man, go to the market and examine what denomination are most in use.

4. It's in a way opposing the cashless policy by the federal government of Nigeria.

What The Wise Nations Did:
1. United State of Ameria used to have $500, $1000, $2000 currency notes until December 14, 1945, when the high denominational bills were last printed and officially discontinued on July 14, 1969 by the Federal Reserve System.

2. Europian Central Bank announced on 4 May, 2016 that it would phase out the 500 Euro notes by the end of 2018.

Other Factors That May Affect The Exchange Rate Of A Currency Include:
1. Ratio of goods/services importation to exportation

2. Availability of currency and number of complying users.

The Illegal illegal printing of currency by the CBN according to as reported by some news media outlets has a long way to desctroy value on our cash.

3. Inflation rate

4. Government debts and federal reserve.

5. Political policies and stability

6. And many more

My Recomendations:
Nigerian government should permanently discontinue and remove 500 NGN and 1,000 NGN currency notes from circulation. Reintroduction of 50 Kobo, 1 NGN and 2 NGN coins should also be done.

A government fighting corruption will yield to this advice as abundance of lower denomination currency will discourage looters from hoarding and keeping cash in a safe instead of bank.

Caveat emptor:
This writeup is a personal opinion resulting from my many observations. It is not a scholarly work and should not be treated as one. Copy-and-paste bloggers should please reference the link and author of the article.

TOP PERFORMING CURRENCY (UPDATED CONVERSION RATEs)

5. British pound (GBP)
The British pound is the fifth strongest currency in the world with 1 British pound buying 1.28 US dollars (or US$1 equals 0.78 British pounds).

5. (Tie) Gibraltar pound (GIP)
The Gibraltar pound is the joint fifth strongest currency in the world with 1 Gibraltar pound buying 1.28 US dollars (or US$1 equals 0.78 Gibraltar pounds).

Gibraltar is located at the southern tip of Spain and is officially a British territory. The Gibraltar pound was first introduced in the 1920s and is pegged to the British pound (at par, meaning that one GIP equals one GBP).

6. Cayman Islands dollar (KYD)
The Cayman Islands dollar is the sixth-strongest currency in the world with 1 Cayman Islands dollar buying 1.20 US dollars (or US$1 equals 0.83 Cayman Islands dollars).

The Cayman Islands is a British territory in the Caribbean and is an offshore financial centre. The Cayman Islands dollar was first introduced in the 1970s and is pegged to the US dollar.

7. Swiss franc (CHF)
The Swiss franc is the seventh strongest currency in the world with 1 Swiss franc buying 1.15 US dollars (or US$1 equals 0.87 Swiss francs).

The Swiss franc is the official legal tender of Switzerland and Liechtenstein and is seen as a safe haven due to Switzerland’s political stability. The Swiss franc was introduced in 1850 and was later briefly pegged to the Euro before moving to a free-float.

8. Euro (EUR)
The Euro is the eighth strongest currency in the world with 1 Euro buying 1.10 US dollars (or US$1 equals 0.91 euros).

The Euro is the official currency of the Eurozone, being 20 out of the 27 countries that form part of the European Union. The physical currency entered circulation in 2002 and is free-floating.

Related: Euro to AUD forecast

10. US dollar (USD)
The US dollar is the 10th strongest currency in the world, worth exactly 1 against itself. All other units of currency across the globe are worth less than a US dollar.

Created in the 1700s, the US dollar is legal tender in the USA, other US territories and sovereign nations including Ecuador and Zimbabwe.

The US is the world’s largest economy by GDP and the US dollar is by far the most-traded currency globally.

The US dollar is also the largest reserve currency in the world (the currency most held by central banks) and is the currency used to price many commodities, including oil, gold and copper.

Crime › 'yahoo Boy' Lifts Lid On How He Gets And Scams 'clients'. by maestro299(op): 7:48am On Feb 15, 2024
I'm a reformed Nigerian romance scammer - these are the tricks I used to fleece 50 women out of £55,000

Rippling biceps, short blond hair and a military uniform was the mask of choice for Christopher Maxwell.

During five years as a romance scammer, Christopher, now 24, posed as an American army man to prowl social media platforms and dating sites in search of his next victim, and successfully tricked up to 50 women into sending a total of £55,400.

Speaking to Money Mail, the self-confessed reformed scammer reveals the deceptive and cruel tricks he used to seduce women across the English-speaking world from the UK to the US, Canada and Australia.

Christopher, who is using a pseudonym and now works as a consultant at fraud-busting group Social Catfish, started scamming in 2016 as a way of making easy money during his second year of university in Nigeria.

‘I had no money and my family was broke so I had to do something. I chose to go into scamming,’ he says.

‘I know people might not understand, but I’m a professional and it was my full-time job. It took months to get to that level, like training on the job,’ he says. ‘I scammed every day of my life at the time.’

Christopher says he used a 40-page bible for scammers in Nigeria entitled How To Make A White Woman Fall In Love With You From Online Chat.

The book, which has been shown to Money Mail by SocialCatfish, offers a step-by-step guide for romance scammers with scripts of romantic phrases, conversation starters and questions that it promises will make vulnerable people ‘fall head over heels in love with you’.

It says the types of women who are ‘easier to get’ and who will ‘fall in love with you ASAP without much stress’ are those over the age of 40.

It says: ‘They are working hence they have the money you need. Also, being single at 40, they are eager for love.’

Once the target is identified, the playbook instructs scammers to do their research before chatting up their ‘client’.

‘You will want to find out everything you can before chatting [to] her as this will help later on. Check her [social media] bio for information.

‘It can be her hobbies, her pets, job, passion, if she has kids, where she lives, what she loves etc.

The 24-year-old says he had a range of false excuses to ask for money, which included saying he needed money to take a flight and spend the rest of his life with the woman or to replace his uniform: ‘I started with small amounts and always said I would pay everything back.’

His biggest windfall came from a 61-year-old American woman, he says, who sent him a total $30,000 (£23,700) during their one-year relationship.
However, she used Social Catfish, a company that verifies online identities using reverse image searches, and was able to track Christopher down.

When he was confronted by the woman whose life he ruined, he says he felt terrible and is happy he no longer has to scam to make a living.

The National Crime Agency says that the majority of romance scams originate from fraudsters in West Africa – Nigeria and Ghana, in particular.

Christopher says he was open with his girlfriends and explained why he was messaging women day and night. ‘There’s a lot of poverty so a lot of people go into it here – they are used to it so it was never a problem.’

Christopher reveals that the biggest tell that you’re speaking to a scammer is if they won’t show their face via video call.

‘Avoid anyone who says they cannot meet because they are in the military or live overseas,’ he says. If they confess love too quickly and demand the same in return, it is a scam.

Dancebreaker:
We need about 8 regions plus FCT:

SE, SW, Lagos, Bendel, ND, Middle Belt, NE, NC, FCT.

Abolish states. Only Regions and Local Councils.

President, Regional Premiers and Local Council Mayors/Chairmen.

Then a unicameral NASS. Salary pegged at level of University professor at most. And another 100% as allowance/bonus.

With regional police and resource control. 30% of resource earnings go to the centre/FG.

For the First 10 years, 5% of IGR from better off regions will be contributed into a pool of money to support the less well off regions.

Call it solidarity premium. Rigging to be president and massive central corruption will reduce.
I like this, especially that resource control part. Make everybody answer their papa name.

Let me completely align myself with Mr Bayo Onanuga,Nigeria is a very poor country in reality but materially and potentially a very rich country
But the question is why are we poor in the midst of wealth and why are we crying for water despite being in the midst of so much to drink

The answer I daresay is our fear to break out of this Ratrace we have found ourselves as a people
Our leaders know the problems but are not willing to go the whole hog to solve it
This idea of holding ourselves back because we want to develop together is one of the absurb things that we have foisted on ourselves
Until we break the chain of being bound together and begin to allow communities to own what they produce and send taxes to the federal government, then we are not ready to get out of this so called poverty
When we are ready as a people to start this journey, that is when the poverty of our people will end
I agree.

Anything I want to buy, I always calculate how much it is in Dollar and I never feel bad again.

I have my $1 fixed as ₦1000 (even though I know it's almost ₦1.5k).

I usually do mental calculation of how much I used to buy these things abroad that year and I concluded that Naija is still cheaper.

Na poor men wey no fit control their dxcks dey born too many children I dey laugh. They've not seen anything yet.

Most things are cheaper in Nigeria except the imported ones.

We should enjoy this hardship now because what APC has in store for us is worse than what we're currently experiencing.

The poorer you make the masses, the easily you can control them with just a loaf of bread. Na who eat well come get strength they fight rich government officials.
They will tell you 'Give birth, God will train them'. Like WTFH!!!!

shocked

I've spent 17k just because of a modem and because I patronized an idiot, he gave me something that's not what I asked for. The fool was even frowning his face when I was asking him questions.

I don't have any other money to spare for that but this might be the last time I'm patronizing any Nigerian selling in a shop, if I have money, I will order from jumia or any online platforms.

Our people are too evil!

Absolutely

We're not independent anything. A 63 years old nation acting like a kid. The leaders has destroyed the country beyond repair. Watch how that old frail emilokan of a president will blame past leaders after his 4 years.

The solution is either everyone go their separate ways. Infact i don't believe in anything Constitution amendment. Na still these useless leaders go amend the Constitution to their own taste

Hausa, yoruba and igbo should go their separate ways
cheesy

An interesting option.

But what about the 'minority tribes' that don't want to be lumped in with the Big Three for fear of subjugation?

Ethnic groups like the Efiks, Tivs, Binis, Nupes, Kanuris, Ikwerres, Igalas, Ibibios, Beroms, Ijaws, Bachamas, Annang, Bokkos, Ebiras, Jukuns and so many others.

What do you propose we do with those?

He wasn't. He fits into the profile of players we already had in abundance. Sancho, Rashford, Garnacho. All better playing from the left. Garnacho looks good so far on the right but still not totally convinced cuz his shot power on the left is weak. But he's doing a job.

Makes me remember what Ole said about Sancho totally preferring to play from the left. Made things complicated.

It's just unfortunate Antony ended up a bum. Most times you can't predict these things.

If we had the funds, we'd have gone for Caicedo. Imagine the tears now. But man looked like a sure banger in any team. Now he looks like someone playing with construction boots.
True.

I'd like to see Amad Diallo given more opportunities to showcase himself.
I had high hopes for Pellestri but the dude seems overawed by Man Utd. Maybe his loan move and more playing time would help him overcome that.
