Music/Radio / Dear Artistes, Please Bring Back Our Beef Tracks! by magazineguy(m): 10:44am On Nov 30, 2017
Lately, there have been a lot of trending controversial issues that has rocked the social media, one of the numerous are the artist throwing jabs at each other, it has become the order of the day to find such interactions on the social media frontier.

For us as humans, the feeling that we are better off than others can erupt, it is allowed! Placing a case study on the Nigerian music industry, issues like this have come up in the past few days which got a lot of attention on social media. Remembering how it used to be in the past, has social media taken over the place of beef tracks?

Why would there be an industry without beef or some sort of competition? that would not just work well with some of us. There would be no impact if the only place we get to see your beef gist is on social media, as music makers we should get some epic jams that would we can keep in our memory for as long as possible.

Taking us back to some of the celebrity beefs that has had a lasting impression on the industry, in 2013 we had the Vector/Reminisce battle, we had something to talk about; they dropped singles that got the teeming fans making arguments of who makes the best music – you might feel the need to argue that both are rappers, what about the Ruggedman/ 9ice beef or even Kelly Handsome/MI or even the worse of all the, Mallam Spicey vs Terry G.

The Messi/Ronaldo beef is not only seen on the social media, we see them competing hard to see that one overrides the other. Recently McGregor called out Mayweather for a fight, this is beef in the real sense.

For artist, music is your own turf if you feel that you’ve a beef let’s hear it in your lyrics. The point is music is your art, you ain’t a social media marketer or even an influencer. Show us what you’ve got by giving us lyrics that would get us talking about your fracas till time immemorial. We are tired of only social media wars it would be more intellectual if you feed us some verses to talk about.

If the only beef you can do as a musician is social media beef, in Small Doctor’s voice “Hide your face.” Shall we have the beef tracks again!

Crime / Re: Libya’s Modern Day Slavery: A Cause For Concern by magazineguy(m): 7:09am On Nov 29, 2017
Lalasticala, these are sad times for Africans in general. This barbaric act needs to be stopped immediately.

I am so sad right now. I mean this is 2017 and Africans are selling Africans. Too bad
Crime / Libya’s Modern Day Slavery: A Cause For Concern by magazineguy(m): 7:07am On Nov 29, 2017
It was never in the books of history that the world was going to abolish slavery and come back to it after decades. The world woke up to news of Modern age slavery on social media, with disappointing remarks and expressions. Decades ago, history had it that there was a massive influx of slaves from Africa, especially the West Africa.

Libya’s current situation could be trailed to the regression the country is suffering from after the demise of former ruler, Gadaffi. A reminder of the brouhaha between the United States and Gadaffi years ago shows that Gadaffi knew Libya would be nothing without him. Libya is a failed sate where every situation is acceptable. A country that boasted of a stable and one of the best economies in Africa few years back.

Libya should be ashamed of herself as a nation. Can you imagine the austerity of the situation? Africans selling Africans! Black men selling black men! Slave trade in this era and age and people are being sold for little as $400. Slavery is totally barbaric and unacceptable. I feel the world is turning its back on the issue as we are allowing the darkest moments in human history unfold before our eyes and hence repeating itself without serious attention from humanitarian organizations.

Libya’s membership in the Africa Union (AU) needs to be revoked if they fail to address, control and calm the heat their citizens have generated so far. Libya is also taunting the bond that exists between member states in the African Union- a decision which will be calamitous to her in the long run.

One can only think of the psychological effect it will have on the victims. Human rights violation has not been treated fully and now more victims are being courted in chambers of shame and guilt without succor. One can only hope and call for a halt to this mess happening in our world right now.

Sports / Yakubu Aiyegbeni: Unforgettable And Unforgivable. See His Wonderful Achievements by magazineguy(m): 2:35pm On Nov 24, 2017
After gracing the green and white stripes of the Nigerian national team colours, Yakubu has decided to call it a day, ending his professional status as a footballer. While he enjoyed the goal records abroad, especially in the Barclays Premier League (now known as English Premier League), there were some milestones he achieved in the Super Eagles colours; he recorded 21 goals in 57 appearances for the Super Eagles of Nigeria, ranking him the 3rd best all-time goalscorer ever in the history of the senior team.

Yakubu was the first African to hit hat-trick in the UEFA Champions league while playing for Maccabi Haifa (He was only 19 at that time). He is also the Nigerian with the highest and 3rd African goalscorer in the Premier league (95 goals). In his career, he scored 4 hat-tricks in the Premier League.

Yakubu was very adventurous as a footballer and this mark saw him play for 14 teams in 5 different countries in his professional career. I personally remember him playing in white and blue colours of Portsmouth. Looking at the records, it is of worth to know that Yakubu has more premier league goals than Fernando Torres, Luis Suarez, Dennis Bergkamp, Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Yakubu would then go on to face shame and hate after missing an opportunity from 3 metres against South Korea in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in which fellow Africans, South Africa hosted. A goal which would have seen us make it out of group stage. He later went on to score a penalty in the same game but it was not enough for his redemption and Super Eagles qualification.

The 35-year old big forward announced his retirement on his birthday, a significant day in his life. Big Yak would hope he is remembered for his prolific goal-scoring ability and not for his woes in the latter stage of his career.

Career / 5 Tell Signs That Scream “You Need A New Job.” by magazineguy(m): 8:19am On Nov 23, 2017
The truth is that there are no jobs. The youth are consistently been released to the new job market and there are not enough jobs or positions that will fit in for their qualification and they are willing to take any opportunities out there that are available to them. After all, in a work environment, everyone is replaceable – there is hope.

There is another truth. There are the ones who have a job but are depressed, uninspired, unmotivated or stuck. For this set, reasons vary from personal life, ambition or suffocating work environment. For these people, they would rather hang under a bridge jobless than wake up another Monday morning to a job they hate. But why are they still there? In those roles, positions or environments that are so suffocating?

Here are the reasons why you need to start job searching again

Stuck in a system of old ideas

Are you stuck in the 60’s in your current company? The management is refusing new ideas that will push the business progress further?

You need to GET OUT now. An organization that is refusing change and stuck in old ways is just waiting to close down. They need to open their doors to the new world to keep alive and you need to leave or else be stuck and irrelevant to the world around you.

No Room to Learn

Why stay in an environment if you have no one to learn from? You are merely limiting your abilities by restricting knowledge. A lot of people change jobs to gain knowledge or be more motivated in a different job. You can learn form both the old and young in your environment but if your current work environment doesn’t afford you this, start searching, you need a new job.

Passion

Where does your true passion lie? Is what you are currently doing bring you job satisfaction? Is it something you see for yourself doing for the rest of your life? If not, kill the FEAR you have and JUMP. It will hurt on first impact but with time you will find your foot and be happy doing what you like and getting paid for it.

Work Monotony

Everyone in your environment is comfortable doing the same things over and over. Nothing new to push or inspire you and you have obviously had enough of it. You need to find a place that pushes you, to inspire you or that awakens the monster in you. Never settle with monotonous work, get a new job.

Underpaid?

In a new job what comes first is, what can you learn and provide to this environment, then how much does it pay?

If you have worked in an organisation long enough to know that you are not paid what your qualification affords, then you have to move to an environment that can pay you for your skill set.

Literature / The Stalker – A Fiction Story By Stephneybass by magazineguy(m): 3:54pm On Nov 22, 2017
It was a hot afternoon, the sun was hot enough to boil a good pot of water and her throat was so dry she needed a cold soda, she turned and waved goodbye to her best friend Jade who was still sitting in their school bus, she had just gotten dropped off at her front gate by her school bus driver, it was her father’s bright idea to make Nancy ride the bus to and from school everyday as he didn’t want her engaged in any extra-curricula activities after school, she was to come straight home everyday. Nancy had been fine with the idea of riding the bus because it saved her the stress of walking.

At exactly 3:45pm her school would close for the day, by 4:00pm she was already seated in her school bus, at about 4:45pm she would have gotten to her house, her school was not very far from where they lived but her dad made her take the bus anyways.

It was exactly 4:49pm when she looked at her watch before opening her front gate, she turned right and noticed a white Camry car parked just down the street, that was not the first time she was seeing that exact car parked in that same spot in the afternoon she observed that the car was never there in the morning time when she went out to school but by the time she got back it would be parked right there, she thought it was odd because she knew everybody on that street, they were all friendly neighbors and no one she knew drove that particular car so she found it odd but didn’t pay much attention to it anymore as she shut the front gate behind her and headed up the stairs.

*****

Nancy had not eaten anything all day and she could hear her stomach growl loudly in class making it twice as difficult to focus on Mr.Shola’s banter about demand and supply, Economics was not really one of her favorite subjects, in fact she almost fell asleep every time Mr. Shola opened his mouth to talk and today she was very close to standing up and walking out of the class in search of food but she managed to keep her calm until she heard the school bell ring (“saved by the bell” she whispered to herself). She got up and headed out of the class to their schools kiosk to get a bottle of coke, she decided to drink just that as she planned on diving into the jollof rice her mum had made earlier this morning, she didn’t have time to grab a bite because her school bus had come too early and she had to rush out without eating.

*****

She flashed a huge smile as her school bus driver pulled up in front of her house, finally she was home! And early too it was only 4:35pm she stepped down and headed straight to her front gate when she heard a car driving towards her, it was the white Camry, and there was a man inside behind the wheel she couldn’t recognize him so she froze and watched the car pull up in front of her and she watched a dark-skinned bald-headed man probably in his late 20’s wearing a ripped black Jean and a plain black polo shirt starting to walk towards her and that frightened her so she hurried for her front gate, opened it and ran inside to slam the gate behind her but she couldn’t because he was already there in front of her. She stared in shock and he said

“Don’t be scared, my name is Bidemi I live in this estate too I have been noticing you for a while now and I must say you are very beautiful I don’t mean to frighten you, I just want to get to know you and I would like you to be my girlfriend” he pronounced with a wide grin across his face.

She was utterly amazed! And confused at the same time.. who is this strange man, he is too old, he is probably almost thirty, does he know I’m in high school and I’m just sixteen years old, why would I be his girlfriend, I’m sure he must be drunk or crazy or just pulling my legs or maybe he has me mistaken for someone else…. it took her almost a full minute to process her thoughts before she replied.

“I’m sorry I think you have me mistaken for someone else, I’m not who you think I am and I don’t know you, sorry I have to go now”… she replied swiftly whilst trying to maintain her composure.

“No! He proclaimed almost loudly… it’s you I want, I want you to be mine … I am falling in love with you… can’t you see I am here for you everyday!”… he added with a straight face which sent chills running down Nancy’s spine…. what did he just say? Ok I am now convinced he is mad she thought to herself but said “I’m sorry please leave me alone I am not interested!” and with that she pushed the gate beside him and shut it which only made him angry and he banged on the gate loudly yelling “open the gate, I am not done talking to you” and with that she bolted upstairs and locked the door behind her entering the comfort of her room luckily there was no one at home so she didn’t have to explain the scenario she just jumped on her bed and closed her eyes hoping that she never sees him again; she was scared of him and she had lost all her appetite for food, she lay there mute until she fell asleep.

The next day she was still in shock and terrified of stepping out of the house to go to school even so she faked to her mum that she was feeling feverish and had a mild headache and needed to rest at home, her mum never liked her falling sick so she was on board with the idea of letting her stay at home and so was her dad. She stayed in her room all morning while they both went to work respectively, she was the only child so she ended up home alone which used to be perfect for her but today she was uneasy and desperately wished she had company probably a muscular police officer as company… yea that would do! She decided to turn on the TV to get her mind of things which worked for about two hours until she realized she was hungry and it was afternoon already, she thought about making a toasted sandwich for lunch so she went to the kitchen to make herself one only to find out that they were out of bread and she already had a craving so she decided to just run downstairs; opposite her house there was a bakery and their bread was usually fresh so she thought to just run down and get some and be right back.

She was still wearing pajamas but she really didn’t care as she was just going across the road. She stepped out of her front gate and walked down and as she was just about to cross to the other side of the road she turned and to her amazement there it was again…. the white Camry was parked in the same spot she was petrified and she instantly regretted craving bread and started to walk back to her front gate but it was already too late! He had seen and hurriedly stepped out of the car and ran towards her which made her run also instinctively to her gate, she opened the gate and locked it beside her… at least she thought she did because the adrenaline rushing through her brain made her pay less attention to actually locking the gate and as she ran up the stairs she heard the gate slam open behind her and just before she could get to the top of the staircase he was already behind her panting loudly.

“Just stop!” He yelled
But she didn’t stop, instead she ran up the stairs but wasn’t fast enough and he caught up to her and held her leg.

“If you try to move any further I will throw you down these stairs” he yelled. Fear trickled down her spine and she stopped herself from moving.

“Please don’t she said … please go away … my parents are at home I wouldn’t want them to see you it would get me in trouble”… Nancy begged.

“Don’t you dare lie to me… he replied … I know your dad left the house at exactly 7:15am and your mum also left at 8:30am they went to work and I know you don’t have any siblings or maid so you are very much alone right now” he added.

Nancy was frightened on how he know so much about her and the truth also, how did he know she was alone and the exact time her parents had gone to work? He must have been monitoring her house all day!!! No not all day who knows how long he has been monitoring her for him to get his facts right. She could almost feel herself shaking in fear she replied

“How do you know that? What do you want? Please leave me alone … she said but it fell on deaf ears as he went silent and lifted her with his bare hands and carried her inside the house

“Stop!” she yelled … put me down! Leave me alone! Go away! She yelled all at once in anger till he threw her down to the carpet floor of their living room and climbed on top of her.

“What are you doing?” She yelled… “get off me please” she repeated twice but this time she was begging with almost a tear down her eyes… “Please don’t touch me I’m a virgin”, she added

“Even better.. he replied her I want you be be my girlfriend and I will force you to be since I asked you nicely and you refused.

“Please don’t rape me!” She begged as she starting sobbing profusely which made him uncomfortable.

“I don’t want you to cry he said I just want you to love me if you agree to be my girlfriend and give my your contact details so I can call you I will get off you right now.”, he said

Nancy was scared out of her mind because she was so vulnerable lying down on the floor with this twenty -something year old man directly on top of her and there was nobody in the house to rescue her, what if he rapes her? She would be helpless she just needed him to leave so she could lock her doors and call the police so she replied

“Yes I will be your girlfriend and you can have my number, where is your phone let me type it in?”

And with that he got up from on top of her having pinned her down with his hands, he reached for his back pocket and took out his phone and handed it to her.

Her hands where shaking as she collected the phone and typed her number before handing it back to him.
“See that wasn’t so hard Nancy!”…he said

Omg he knew her name! Who was this guy?

“I will leave you now but I will call you later at night, Nancy”! He added before turning and walking out the door.

As soon as he did she hurriedly locked the door behind him and called her mum at work and explained everything to her, in a few hours both her mum and her dad where back home accompanied with armed policemen they were about five of them and one was a female, they took Nancy into her room to ask her questions, she didn’t hold anything back, she gave the exact description of the strange man, told them his name was Bidemi and he drove a white Camry, she consciously remembered the last three digits of his car plate number from seeing the car almost everyday and told the policemen that as well.

Nancy vowed not to come out of her house until she had been informed of his arrest which was not up to a week because it was easy for him to be caught as she was not the only victim of this stalker… he had terrorized two other girls in the estate and the news spread so fast when the police started asking questions around and the other victims had come forward with their own story only that theirs was more unfortunate as he had raped the other two girls on different occasions and threatened to murder them if they told anybody, it was not until the girls heard he was wanted that they were able to open up. Nancy thought to herself how lucky she was to not have been raped … was it mere luck or the grace of God? She never understood but was grateful and even more so that he was caught and put behind bars for a long long time.

Nancy never liked the idea of riding the bus everyday but she was grateful for the safety and the fact that she didn’t have to walk on the streets everyday and meet these weirdos.

Career / Six Ways To Motivate Your Team For Better Efficiency by magazineguy(m): 7:57am On Nov 20, 2017
It is a usual concept to motivate team members in order to help them achieve their best while delivering their duties and responsibilities. If you want people to be at their best, set up a reward system and also create a more mutual relationship to help them actualize the organizational and their individual goals.

Relationship helps to ease knowledge transfer and also create an atmosphere that celebrates wins and nurture amateurs to their full potentials easily. The following are methods that can help your team to achieve goals easily:

Communicate
Communicating the vision, mission and core values of the organization to your team is the best way of preparing their minds for the task ahead. When they completely understand and imbibe these things, their activities will be built around them.

Better Role Sharing
Placing individuals in areas they can thrive through passionate dedication to job roles is very important as it gives them sense of pride and fulfillment. In clear terms, put a square peg in a square hole and a round peg in its own too.

Welcome Creativity
Create an atmosphere where individuals who are creative will be able to exhibit it for their own success and the organization as well.

Give Incentives
Incentives can motivate majority of people around the world, monetary and other incentives such as vacation packages, promotion, shares can help grow your team to succeed.

Personal and Professional Empowerment
Encouraging each individual to become their best and also empowering them to learn new skills and acquire certifications will commit them more to their jobs in the organization.

Give them a Sense of Partnership
When people are shown more appreciation, given a space of comfort and allowed to communicate their opinion as a stakeholder, they become more motivated and sometimes feel responsible for ensuring that an organization is successful.

Jobs/Vacancies / 5 Tips To Negotiating A Better Salary And Landing A Great Job by magazineguy(m): 7:38am On Nov 15, 2017
This is one of the most tricky and most vulnerable positions for some because they want to get the best salary they can from their new recruiter and are careful not to get underpaid. If you are ignorant about the salary range expectation you will be doing yourself a disservice and your recruiter a favour if you accept a salary offer that is way below what you should have received.

Therefore, before you begin salary negotiations with your new recruiter, you need to find out how much the job is worth in comparison to other companies and how much the company pays employers on your level and position.

Here’s how to negotiate for a good pay:

Wait for an Offer

During the interview process don’t jump the gun and mention your salary expectation. It throws the employer off and it shows you off as someone who is after the money and not for the love of the job. Wait for when the recruiter/employers makes an offer.

Hold back long enough

The truth is that your recruiter/ employer to be doesn’t need your previous salary or current salary for this new role. There is already a stipulated salary range for someone of your qualification and expertise. So if asked, hold back by not saying your salary or your expectation but give a range with which they can work with. If they get persistent, tell them …” you will like to know more about the responsibilities and the challenges of the job prior to discussing salary”… then base a range not a figure surrounding that information.

Take Your Time

Don’t rush to accept an offer. The goal is to always sleep over an offer and make a decision. If the contract details doesn’t sit well with you, refuse it, not all jobs we get are meant for us. Sometimes, thinking over an offer can give you a better offer.

If the job offer is below your expectation say NO. It’s not by force. Refuse it. Most times you will get a call back on a salary revision. Don’t just say yes and swallow it.

Salary With Benefits

What are their benefits like? Are the benefits that follow the “take home pay” preferable for you. What is the pay after tax and other benefits that follow like bonuses, vacation.

Don’t Refuse a Job you need

Intuition is a winner all the time. Don’t refuse a job offer you have always wanted in an industry and company you admire. A lot of people have left better paying jobs to start off another job that paid less but was a CV booster to them and they went on to occupying better positions and earning more money. The goal is to look for a better position in than your previous place.

Celebrities / Forgetting Fela, Da Grin, Goldie, Mc Loph & Michael Jackson? by magazineguy(m): 3:03pm On Nov 14, 2017
Fela of the 70s through to the 90s, is considered to have made the most impactful Nigerian songs. Michael Jackson is said to have led an era of high-level musical entertainment. Da Grin led multitude to appreciate the beauty of the then “underground” indigenous rap music. Goldie Harvey was a music star whose fashion style amused millions of fans till 2013 but the space allotted to these icons in our memories, is slowly being occupied by new events and new trends.

For many years during their respective careers, these stars made music that brought meaning to the lives of a lot of people. In their different niches, these stars made so much impact that earned them titles and hero’s statuses. They commanded respect and adulation of horde of fans but death in its cold way of doing things, rushed these stars to the after-life.

For each of these stars, many fans gathered to mourn the loss of an impactful figure, at the gatherings; tears freely flowed, past moments of the lives of these stars were recalled and fans made sure to pour out their hearts in respect of the dead artistes but what usually happens afterwards is slow wearing off of the once absolute influence of the artiste.

Fela Anikulapo Kuti of blessed memory is arguably the greatest Nigerian musician for all his contributions to the Nigerian music, social and political culture but his memory is today tied to Felabration, an annual concert organised to celebrate the life of the great musician. The event, though internationally recognized, has not had the following that you would expect of the celebration of a figure like Fela. It is even more disappointing seeing the following of Felabratioin slowly shrink.

Similarly, Michael Jackson is considered to be one of the most entertaining artistes of all time, with hundreds of millions fans during his life time but a close look shows just how the MJ aura lessens as time advances, especially with the number of pop artistes of today, ensuring that the fans do not have to look to the past for entertainment.

Likewise in the case of Da Grin, the revolutionary indigenous rapper who died in April 2011, a lot of his fans have moved on to new trends, with Da Grin only sparsely remembered on the anniversary of his death and in few occasions where the history of indigenous rap is being discussed. The fact that he died in his prime made his death even more painful with a lot of fans believing that he had a lot more to offer, had he not died, but the hardcore of a lot of Da Grin fans has been softening since his death.

All of these muted changes has a valid explanation. There is a theory that expounds these habit of fans which this article is not penned down to condemn but to lay it out, that time changes, seasons come and go; the relationship between a fan and an artiste is usually not for better for worse. The position of “favourite artiste” is not one that an artiste holds on to forever, a new artiste could come to claim it, so long he/she comes bearing convincing-enough offerings. Cassper Nyovest captured this message in his song Confused, when he said “the new guy would always excite the crowd more.”

Celebrities / Wizkid Vs Davido: The Best African Artiste Depends On Who Is Asking by magazineguy(m): 3:29pm On Nov 13, 2017
The events that happened on Sunday, 13th November 2017, leaves a lot to be discussed about how we rank and award our artistes in Nigeria, and in extension, Africa. Davido claimed the award for Best African Artiste at the MTV EMA awards, while on the same day his arch-rival, Wizkid was handed a similar award. Weezy was named the best artiste on the African continent by the organizers of another prestigious music award, AFRIMA.

The Nigerian music fanbase has since been literally split into two separate raves; with each celebrating different artistes as the 2017 champion of African music. Even though there is so much collective celebration to do, considering the continued continental dominance of Nigerian music, but still, the fact that Davido is considered a worthy awardee on one platform, while Wizkid appears more deserving to another; goes to show that we are yet to reach a unanimous decision as to who had the best musical year – Davido or Wizkid.

I want to believe the award for Best African Act at the MTV EMA Awards was given to Davido on the basis that he has multiple continental hit songs in the year under review. No doubt, If and Fall are two of the biggest songs on the African continent and so, I concluded that Davido won the award because of the commercial success of his songs in the African music market.

On the other hand, Wizkid has been a darling to African music lovers for his exploits in pushing our sound into the known-to-be resistant global market, through his collaborations with international artistes like Drake, Future, Trey Songz, Major Lazer and co. For this particular reason, I think the organizers of AFRIMA rewarded him with awards in very juicy categories including that of Artiste of the year.

The ultimate question now is – can we get a unanimous pick for the best African artiste of year, 2017? Should it be StarBoy or OBO?

In finding the perfect answer to that question, one would have to consider the criterion used by the different award organizers in picking their different choices. The organizers of the MTV EMA Awards seem to have picked Davido on the basis of the popularity of his songs, especially in the “local” market, while AFRIMA might have based their judgement on the happenings on the global scene and hence, the different choice for the same title. It therefore makes it fitting to conclude that the answer to the question on who deserves to be the 2017 best African artiste, depends on who is asking.

The spiral controversies circling the music industry of late, has made a mess of a space created for us to find entertaining and amusing materials. M.I Abaga is battling on many fields, for stirring up the hornet’s nest of Naija Hip-hop. The dark secrets of the Plantashun Boiz is being dug up, and Blackface Naija is out in the media demonising someone he once called “brother.”

The same Blackface made alcohol-induced comments about Ruggedman, and the rapper has since stopped exchanging smiles with the controversial Plantashun Boy. In the middle of the war of words, Eedris Abdulkareem, who seems to be nobody’s friend, has made himself a judge and everyone else is guilty of multiple charges. The whole scene has turned into a heated debate involving several individual speakers but the problem is – there is no common topic for the debate.

So every speaker is out trying to out-voice others and with little moderation, the whole show has become a noise-filled atmosphere in an environment that could have accommodated these music icons in a way that their different opinions would be aired, revelations would be made while civility is still maintained. The platform which was organised under the premise of “curating the events surrounding Nigerian music art” has become the dark kitchen where beef is been cooked and served.

I was complaining about this to a friend and he responded by saying; “I blame the media personnels for stirring up conversations the way they’re doing. They are literally pitching one artiste against another and hence, the whole tension in the industry, especially amongst the OGs. And of course, people like Eedris & Blackface would happily rant on screen, to be seen and heard again.”

Then I thought, “true, some of the media guys are the ones cheering the artistes to do the loose talking and that’s why there is so much tension in the circle of the OGs.” But it is unfortunate that the “OGs” who should be steering the wheel of the industry towards progress; are calling each other out and shaming each other before the young ones and it is even worse that the media which is a tool with the potential to advance the culture; is now being used to pitch artistes against each other with a promised reward hanging over their heads.

Health / Gangrene And Its Monstrous Threat To Sportsmen by magazineguy(m): 7:34am On Nov 07, 2017
Injuries and staging major comebacks are parts of sport. Some athletes have suffered career-ending injuries- some made it back; some just took rehabilitation serious and got back to their best form. Even when they get back, it is evident some lose their gifts and are never able to reach that potential fans saw in them before the nightmare that led to those injuries.

Last week saw news making round as Santi Cazorla of Arsenal Football Club confessed to Gangrene as the major factor to him on the sidelines for such a long time. The diminutive Spaniard has gone through the knife eight different times. At a point, he needed skin grafts because the ankle fracture kept eroding his Achilles tendon. The wounds he suffered during surgery continued to open – he suffered from gangrene. The worst thing that could have happened was him getting his foot amputated. Another athlete who saw threat from gangrene was Anthony Allen, rugby player for Leicester. The severity was overturned through the expertise of the club surgeon.

Blood plays a vital function in health. With the fact that it transports oxygen to parts of body that requires it, it also delivers infection-fighting antibodies that protect the body from diseases. When the blood cannot perform these roles, the cells are liable to die, infections might develop and tissues can die from gangrene. Any condition that influences the flow of blood increases risk of gangrene including diabetes, smoking, trauma or serious injuries, fracture, obesity.

Although, tissues affected by gangrene cannot be saved, quick treatment can prevent progressive menace it incites. The use of antibodies has been shown to have a little remedy to the condition. The most common one is surgery. Skin grafts have been used to cover the affected surface, as in the case of Cazorla whose skin from his arm was used as grafts.

Health / How Technology Changed Healthcare In Nigeria by magazineguy(m): 11:56am On Nov 01, 2017
I just sat down in one of the top hospitals as I toured my city. I couldn’t bring myself down to the fact that I was sitting in one of the multi-billion naira healthcare facility in Southern Nigeria. As one of the physicians opened the door ready for his day’s consultation, I took a peep sneakily- the type you don’t get caught at. I looked and saw one of these Gray Anatomy-like equipments. Never seen before in my existence. My point is that we cannot ignore the fact that there are life support machines in this part of the world.

The idea that applications are available to measure a person’s breathing rate or a digital platform for consulting with doctors, the trends in the past few months have been tremendous. It is of clarity to see that technology is completely changing the way patients seek treatment for minor and major complications.

One of the many methods in which technology is transforming healthcare is by aiding the remote population in teeming communities consults with medical practitioners who otherwise are not reached out to easily. The National Health Insurance scheme is one of the platforms patients check in with their doctors. Though the NHIS platform has suffered setback every once in a while, we cannot resonate between the assistance and disappointment that lies on the foundation it was built upon.

Another method in which healthcare is moving with the arrival of new technology is with the rise of adapted diagnostic implements. It means that these diagnostic equipments are no more in reserve for doctors alone, but can also be utilized by the patients. An example of such devices is the Welb device which calculates heart and breathing rates and then interprets the information directly to the patient’s smartphone.

Here are more of the diagnostic tools;

Augmented Autism Apps
Deep tissue massage seats
Pharmaceutical vending machines
Portable allergen detectors

Career / 6 Things Graduates Need To Know Before They Start Their First Job by magazineguy(m): 7:10am On Oct 31, 2017
Congratulations on your new role!

You are fresh out of school, vibrant and ready to be of key resource to your employer. Take advantage of this moment and run with it. But before you tie your laces for this career run, here are a few things you need to know as a fresh-out-of-school employee.

Your boss is your future

When you get a job, you are answerable to someone. That person who is referred to your manager or line manager is the person who your progress lies in his/her hands. You should always try to work in the person’s favour without losing your self-dignity. Don’t subject yourself to being a slave or a Yes man just because you want to be in that organization. See the person as a role model – never hesitate to reach out to the person for work related assistance, knowledge if there is something you don’t understand.

Be a team player

Always have it at the back of your mind that there is no I in team. If you join and organization the realization that you will be working with a lot of people from different backgrounds should have sunk in way before you even accepted the offer letter. So be open to working with different people and be willing to compromise.

Be humble

You are new, be willing to listen and learn. Be open to corrections and don’t believe you know everything, you are obviously fresh out from school, so don’t enter believing you are an expert in your field. You are not and they would not expect that from you. Check your ego at the door and leave whatever bad attitude you have or have been told you possess outside the office walls.

Be friendly always

Be warm, friendly and approachable always. You will meet a lot of new people at your place of work. People from diverse backgrounds, attitudes, age range, work habits and experiences are some of the individuals you will be associating with in your new place. Smile more and enjoy your work People are very open to people who show a positive attitude to their work. Be friendly.

Be aware of office dress codes

The last thing you want to do is to exceptionally stand out in your work place. You want to be fully integrated in your workplace and not to stand out. Be a part of the team by having a good knowledge of the dress code and conform to it. Always base your work outfits on what your colleagues are wearing.

Own Your Mistakes

You are new to your work and could be related to a toddler getting his first steps. When you start off, you will make some mistakes. Mistakes that will eventually become a leading trail of your success tomorrow, accept them, recognize them, own them and learn from them and ensure that they are not repeated again.

Goodluck!

Music/Radio / Does Music Taste Define Your Relationship Or Societal Status? by magazineguy(m): 7:08pm On Oct 30, 2017
‘Music is a universal language. Love is blind, genuine love supersedes all.’

Yes, some are of the above opinion. However, many will also agree to the fact that it is very much easier to be attracted to someone with the same music taste (i.e. talking about the genre, the performing artist or a particular song itself) than someone we are not connected to in terms of music taste.

Music speaks to the soul and at times there are words we want to say to our partners/people that can be conveyed efficiently through music but what happens when the partner is not interested in, conversant with or unable to interpret and decode the type of music that we so desire to convey these messages through?

Scenarios of when your favourite song comes on and you engage on your own ‘don’t forget the lyrics’ challenge, wishing your partner could join the rendezvous and sing along the lines with you while you both giggle and laugh aloud as either of you forgets a line or two while looking deep into each other eyes and connecting on a spiritual level.

A lot of people have associated music taste to depict the societal status of individuals. The local and less wealthier human beings listen to razz sounds while the educated and high class folks listen to the jazz, blues type of sounds while sipping a cup of fine wine and casually gisting about the economic policies of the current leader of the country or about when the payment for a particular contract would be wired into their account.

Can this assertion be really true?

Well, imagine going on a date with a beautiful light-skinned lady with over 10k followers on social media platforms, an amazing dress sense and a banging physique, only for someone to call her halfway through the date that she has been struggling to finish one cup of wine for over 30 minutes and then her ringtone goes ‘customer dada ni, dada ni‘ or any of those razz sounds, would your view of her personality and status be altered?

Your partner listens to majorly Nigerian music while you are more of the foreign music listener, Would the relationship be constrained? Do you consider the music taste of an individual stringent to a relationship or even friendship or a determinant factor of an individual societal status?

Health / Benefits Of Developing Your Inner Strength by magazineguy(m): 2:07pm On Oct 27, 2017
What does it mean to be strong?

In the word of John Roger “we should awaken ourselves to the power and beauty that are alive within us at the moment.”

No one is ever born with inner strength, but it can be developed like any other skill. It consists of willpower, self-discipline, persistence, the ability to concentrate and peace of mind. We all have our own personal philosophy of what a positive state of mind or a positive attitude means to us. Inner strength includes all sorts of things such as being honest and open, communicating with integrity or anything else.

I believe having inner strength is the opposite of aggression. People act aggressively out of defence when they feel they are not strong enough to resolve a situation. Violence and aggression come in handy as a means to deter and fend off others, thus avoiding real confrontation of a conflict. Strong individuals do not need to act aggressively because they feel that they have the power and skills to take over the details of a situation and bring it to a close. Aggression is a means of covering weakness.

Another term for inner strength is personal value, the human spirit or the innate essence that you are sustained by throughout your life. Your inner strength does not have to do with how you behave or act, but more with who you are.

You can be the most psychologically resilient individual and break down mentally if you lose a few days of sleep. Physical and mental strength work in synergy and feed each other to form a strong individual, and the opposite is also true – being physically inactive and out of shape can make one sink down and vice versa. Several recent studies have shown that physical exercise is an effective way for treating clinical weakness and the medical community is now starting to treat stress from both physical and mental perspectives. To build inner strength you must build both physical endurance and mental muscle.

Being grateful and thankful for yourself will also help you find inner strength. Even when you are feeling down, just look around yourself and say thanks for everything that you have at the moment. You will be able to get through the worst storms of life having a grateful attitude and you pave you own path toward greater fulfilment, joy and serenity.

Our reality can be altered by what is achieved by us inwardly. Saluting the human spirit within you and having faith in the beauty of who you are will make you internally strong. If you want to find your inner strength, you will firstly have to dare to shine.

Building inner strength is a lifelong task. If done right, not only will it pay off when difficulty arises, it will become habit, and eventually a part of your identity. Be strong.

Business / 6 Branding Lessons From D’banj by magazineguy(m): 8:06am On Oct 23, 2017
In 2001, D’banj, Nigerian songwriter and singer was working as a security guard. But, 16 years down the line, he has had huge endorsements with brands like Bank of Industry (BOI), Globacom, Heritage Bank, Beats By Dre and Ciroc. The question is, how did a security guard become the richest Hip Hop artiste in Nigeria? Answers can be found in his personal branding. Meet D’banj, a master of personal branding, which Nigerians like to refer to as ‘packaging’.

Here are highlights of D’banj’s personal branding strategies and branding lessons for you, from his flourishing career.

Define Your Personal Brand

From the very start, D’banj made it clear what his personal brand was about. Even when he was a security guard in 2001, he highlighted the fact that he was all about music. “It was okay because I did nights,” said D’banj, “so I could listen to music on my headphones.”

Lesson: When building your personal brand, focus on a specific skill or field and strive to become an authority. You can’t have a career in digital marketing and build a personal brand around accounting or artificial intelligence. Your career and personal brand must be aligned.

Let Your Name Sink In

D’banj was born Dapo Oyebanjo but while establishing his personal brand, the singer coined his brand name, D’banj from picking the first alphabet of his first name and merged it with the last 5 alphabets of his name. He also cultivated the habit of repeatedly mentioning his brand name in his songs. The same was done during public performances.

The phrase “I’m D’banj…” slowly but gradually found its way into the consciousness of his fans and more importantly, his target audience. The psychological impact of this strategy can simply not be overlooked.

In the song, Fall in Love, one of the first things he says right after he mentions his music producer is,”I’m D’banj”. In the song, ‘Mr Endowed Remix,’ (featuring Snoop Dogg) he also mentions the phrase “I’m D’banj.”

His personal brand is replete with a litany of names, catchwords and catchphrases. Some of them include ‘Koko Master,’ ‘Bangalee,’ ‘File!,’ ‘No Long Thing,’ ‘Oshey,’ ‘Kokolette’ and ‘Eja Nla’.

Lesson: Learn to mention your name when building your personal brand. For instance, if you’re a graphic designer, put your brand name where people can see it. If you are a social media manager, place your official handles on creatives you use.

Collaborate with Major Players

It’s not unusual for performing artistes to have exceptionally beautiful models in their music videos. D’banj went a step further in the process of building his personal brand.

In 2008, D’banj released the song, ‘Fall in Love’. In the music video, instead of settling for a regular video vixen, he went for the award-winning actress, Genevieve Nnaji. This music video went ahead to have well over 3 million views at a time when the D’banj wasn’t even close to reaching his personal branding peak.

Over the years, he has collaborated with other heavyweights in various capacities. Some of them include Kanye West, Don Jazzy, Snoop Dogg, Becca, Big Sean, Wande Coal, 2Face, Akon, Fally Ipupa and a host of others.

With D’banj, nothing hardly ever happens by accident especially when it is related to his personal brand. Did you know that the video vixen who asked one of the opening questions in the video, ‘It’s not a Lie,’ Bernice Burgos (@realberniceburgos) has over 3 million Instagram followers while he has 1.8 million?

Lesson: Learn to ride on the strength of a powerful network and influencers. Regardless of what you do, you will need to promote your personal brand. It is one of the fastest ways to build your personal brand. It helps you build trust and brand awareness.

Blow Your Own Trumpet

Music history has witnessed famous artistes falling from grace to grass. Since 2005, when D’banj dropped his first monster hit, ‘Tongolo,’ he hasn’t slowed down.

One thing D’banj has done really well when building his personal brand is blowing his own trumpet. The fact that he still does it makes it even more impressive. What is even more interesting is how he does it. D’banj is able to sing his own praise without sounding obscene or boring.

In the song, ‘It’s Not a Lie,’ he opens the video fielding questions from a young lady with an American accent asking him about African music and then asking “…who is D’banj.”

As expected, he ends up talking about his personal brand and singing about it alongside Wande Coal and Harrysong. In less than 6 months, the video is currently inching towards 2 million views.

Lesson: There will always be people who do not know your personal brand. The higher the number of people in this category who fall into your target audience, the stronger your personal brand becomes. Don’t be afraid to highlight your successes and problems you solved with your skillset.

There’s Always a Business Side

Music is undoubtedly entertaining but for D’banj, it clearly doesn’t stop there. Over the years, D’banj has used the results of his personal branding to show that music is merely a means to an end. He has shown that music will always have a business side to it.

His songs have earned him the respect and fame that many have eternally struggled to catch up with. When Google launched an advertising campaign, D’banj suddenly dropped a song (It’s Not a Lie) that has the words ‘Google D’banj’ within its chorus. A scene in the video also shows a video vixen checking his images on Google. Is this a coincidence or another marketing tactic and target delivered by ‘Eja Nla’ as he sometimes likes to call himself? Such is the power of D’banj’s personal brand.

As entertaining as the video of the song ‘It’s Not a Lie’ is, D’banj uses his personal brand to deliver another promotional objective for the Beats By Dre Headphone brand in the final quarter of the video.

Lesson: Regardless of what you do, if you position your personal brand well enough, there will always be business opportunities for you to explore. As a graphic designer in Nigeria, what happens if your personal brand gets you a contract to design and deliver 6,000 branded shorts for a company with 15 branches across Nigeria at the cost of N2,000 per shirt? Your guess is as good as ours.

Social Media Makes a World of Difference

In 2019, it is estimated that there will be around 2.77 billion social media users around the globe, up from 2.46 billion in 2017. D’banj understands the power of social media as exemplified in how he uses it to strengthen his personal brand.

As of October 2017, he had 1.8 million followers on Instagram (@iambangalee). On Twitter (@iamdbanj), he had 2.14 million followers as of October 2017. These numbers highlight the instrumentality of social media to his growth.

Lesson: Don’t neglect your social media accounts. Use them to strengthen your personal brand. Learn to connect with influencers, promote your profile and choose 1-3 areas of expertise.

D’banj is a complete entertainer whose personal brand has grown to attract some of the most powerful brands across the globe. Personal branding does not happen by accident. You have to make a conscious decision to build it just like D’banj has done.

Jobs/Vacancies / You Didn’t Get The Job Because You Failed To Follow-up After The Interview! by magazineguy(m): 4:54pm On Oct 19, 2017
When you apply for a job interview and you get an email from the company weeks later inviting you for an interview after being selected out of thousands of other applicants, it feels you with a sense of accomplishment. Finally my talent can be of use to someone and above all I am one step closer to having my foot in the door.

Then it happens…

It has happened to many applicants even myself. Having applied to an organisation especially one you respect and have come in for an interview whether it was a written test or just an oral meet, they go dead silent on you for weeks and then nothing. You never hear from them again and then you reach the conclusion that the company didn’t like you or that you just didn’t make the cut for reasons beyond your control.

This is a wrong and misguided conclusion. Always follow up after every interview especially after a maximum of 3 weeks and you haven’t heard back from the company.

A lot of factors can go in to them not reaching back to you. Factors like your test script went missing, you didn’t write a name on the script, they really liked you but misplaced your contact details or you actually didn’t make the cut but the HR really is not in the business of passing bad news.

Whatever the reason might be, whether the fault was from your side or theirs the goal is to always find out from the company on what happened. Contact them through the hiring manager or HR and indicate the fact that you wrote a test or met with someone but you haven’t heard anything back. The idea behind this is to know where you stand with the company. Should you move on with your life or wait and see? – Closure.

I have personally missed a lot of job opportunities by not reaching out and contacting the HR after weeks of going for an interview and not hearing back all because I thought I had to wait. But you don’t anymore. At-least not in this time and age. You want to know what happened. Have the attitude of persistency and the zeal to know why and what happened and how you can address the situation.

I have met a couple of people who said they got jobs because they actually followed back concerning the interviews they did. They didn’t wait to be contacted but reached out after weeks of not hearing from the organization.

Always ask yourself this question – How bad do you need this opportunity? What can I learn from this opportunity? What is the worst that could actually happen for not following up with the organisation?

Your answer is all the motivation you will need to follow up and know your next move.

Business / 5 Thoughts Inhibiting Entrepreneurship Growth In Nigeria by magazineguy(m): 7:32am On Oct 16, 2017
Entrepreneurs are widely known as risk takers and Nigeria’s economy needs more of these bold and unique agents of positive growth and development. Entrepreneurship is an ideology that appeals to only a minute number of the Nigerian population and statistics has also revealed that despite intervention from governmental, local and international organizations; the situation remains the same.

It is a fact that for us to prosper as a nation, all aspects of our day to day living and activities demand befitting products and services. Most of the existing businesses also need the services of other professionals or company to acquire new skills and supply of inputs. Potential entrepreneurs should create a solution for need(s) of individuals, household or other businesses in the form of product or service and concentrate efforts on convincing prospects. Below are few of the beliefs that have slowed the growth of entrepreneurship in the country:

Entrepreneurship is very challenging

Yes, it is but also very rewarding when you eventually succeed. In order to minimize the challenges and failures, arm yourself with the right skills, information and team; carry out an objective research and also control your expenses in the short run as major losses at this stage can put you off forever.

Seeing capital as the first requirement

Randomly ask ten Nigerians why they don’t own a business and nine will instantly reply you it’s capital that is holding them back. If capital is as important as passion and readiness, most Nigerian governmental agencies like Small and Medium Scale Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) would have recovered the huge loans given to most intending entrepreneurs in the past few years around the country .

Considering employment as the only source of livelihood

It’s quite disheartening to hear of persons especially graduates enduring prolong joblessness or harrowing jobs without considering starting a business. I once read about a Nigerian lady who became popular after starting shoes making business. She was jobless for six years after graduation and after she finally landed a job, she was unfulfilled thus her decision to venture into shoes making, a decision that changed her life for the better.

Believing that to become successful in business demands connection with people in high places

You can solely network yourself to the top if you offer good product or service. And you can be referred by connected people only to get turned down because of poor offering. You need to be armed with good offering, great communication skills and confidence and you will be surprised with the number of doors that will be opened for you.

Being afraid of failure

Failure is something everyone is afraid of but not trying at all is worst. Imagine being afraid to walk because you believe your healthy legs will break into pieces if you try to. Failure is mostly an illusion that is meant to be fended away as soon as it appears in your thoughts.

Celebrities / Ibadan Based Rapper, Vader Wins Hennessy VS Season 4 by magazineguy(m): 6:38pm On Oct 13, 2017
6 weeks of lyrical “dopeness” and intense bars came to a crescendo yesterday as 24 year old Franklyn Ikemefuna – stage name VADER– earned the bragging rights as Nigeria’s hottest MC by winning the 4th season of Hennessy Artistry’s VS Class.

The Ibadan based rapper ably represented the lyrical prowess that the ancient city possesses by emerging the best out of the 40 rappers chosen to participate on the live Radio competition after keenly contested live and online audition sessions about 2 months ago.

His journey to the prize wasn’t smooth either; after losing in the finals of 2nd season of the show, VADER exhibited the Never Stop Never settle spirit by coming back to the Hennessy VS Class arena to battle for the right to be called the best upcoming MC in Nigeria. Although he lost the final of his Week 3 Group; the Class Master for VS Class 2017, Vector, made him his wild card pick for the grand finale and VADER never looked back as he out rapped and out battled 7 other gifted MCs to win the competition.

Speaking on emerging as the winner of the 4th Season of Hennessy VS Class, VADER said “I feel I had to lose in order to win and I sincerely appreciate the Class Master, Vector. He has always been a mentor, every time I see him, there is always something to learn. I was built for this type of competition. I was made for this”.

It was evident that his past losses drove him to focus on ensuring his final performance was energetic, intense and lyrical. He took daring shots at his opponent Dabu the Gemini and was the unanimous choice of the studio judges and social media

As the winner, VADER wins album deal with ARISTOKRAT records; he will also undergo an intense one year mentorship with the Class Master Vector the Viper, who will work with him to hone his craft on the album.

Career / 5 Things To Do When You Have A Passive-aggressive Person For A Boss! by magazineguy(m): 6:37am On Oct 12, 2017
There is always a passive-aggressive individual in every workplace but it all gets way worse when the person is your boss.

Passive-aggressive behaviour can be described as a non-verbal aggression that manifests itself in negative behaviour. It is a situation where someone is angry with you but cannot tell you.

Passive-aggressive behaviour can come in different ways and in different situations. These situations can stem from interaction with; family members, to friends, acquaintances, work colleagues or bosses. That is why you need to handle these individuals with a considerable amount of patience and tolerance because little issues can go from 0-100 real quick.

When a boss is exhibiting a passive-aggressive behaviour towards you, it gets worse. Why? A manager or boss – whoever you answer to in the workplace has the power to make or mar you in your work environment. If your colleagues exhibit behaviours such as this, it is easier to handle than dealing with it with your boss. With your immediate colleagues, you can address the issue by doing your job whilst still minimize undue interactions that might turn on you or simply ignore them. But with your boss, you can’t.

Your boss can help your career development or can bring it to an abrupt end.

Here is what you need to do to handle your passive-aggressive boss.

Is It Me?

Are you doing your job well and effectively? Are your boxes ticked? Your “I’s” dotted and “T’s” crossed? How is your behaviour at work, to your boss, and colleagues?

All this is very important because sometimes the problems we face are ones we started unconsciously. In addition, it is easier to spot a flaw in others but never in us. So it’s advisable to spot the problem in order to find a solution. But if you have searched yourself properly and analyzed the situation, then continue to the second bullet.

Don’t Take It Personally

Never take the attitudes of a passive-aggressive person too personally. Especially when it comes from your boss. Passive-aggressive people, most times have a problem when it comes to interacting with people – they lack social skills. They can come off as hostile because they don’t understand what love or affection is – it’s a foreign feeling. They are stubborn for reasons best known to them.

You have no idea what your boss might be going through. He might be pouring out his frustrations on you because he is trying to let out anger – from failed contracts, tasks pending, his own shortcomings or family trouble. Look at this person in empathy and meet with them in areas or ways you can help solve a work need for them.

Meet With Your Passive-Aggressive Boss

Most of the time when your boss is giving you the passive-aggressive treatment, you are the last person he wants to look at, meet with or have a conversation with.

Make a way where there seems to be no way and talk to him. Waiting for when he is happy to meet with him might have you waiting for the world to come to an end. Take advantage of every opportunity you have and meet with him and address the situation in which you have found yourself.

When you are given audience, do not play the victim or the blame game card. Discuss on a ground where you both can interact and can have your work goals met. If there is something you could improve on or better reach/ manage, assignments that can work with his schedule without failing to meet deadlines would be nice.

Get Busy

Working with a passive-aggressive boss can be like living in a house where the roof is constantly on fire. You know you will get burnt the longer you stay. So try and find something that distracts you from the confusion you are surrounded by.

Get a hobby. Find a good distraction. Something that helps keep you motivated in the workplace or keeps your energy up to fight another day.

Find something that you love and do it.

Get Out!

After all said and done. Having played the Good Samaritan. Having done everything possible to improve the work interaction with your boss and still, it doesn’t work out in your favour… leave.

You need a work environment where you can be nurtured, grow and develop. With a passive-aggressive boss, learning and growing in the workplace is never going to happen.

You will remain frustrated, stagnant and it will ultimately destroy your self-esteem.

Dust off your CV, update your CV and start job-hunting again. Depending on how long you have been out of the job market, the stress of job-hunting can be daunting and it might take a while for you to find somewhere else.

But it is better to leave a house that is on fire than have the flames catch up with you.

Culture / 10 Simple Habits That Can Make You More Attractive by magazineguy(m): 6:08pm On Oct 10, 2017
We don’t say this out loud, but deep down inside we all want to be attractive. No, not with a fit body or the perfect face, but having qualities that people feel magnetized to. Being the kind of person everyone wants to be with and do favors for.

But what if you could make people like you with just your personality. Or better yet, with good habits? Some of these habits might not seem as obvious to the average Joe or plain Jane, but if you start to build these habits now, you can make friends in a snap or keep the love in your relationship strong.

1. Surprise people, don’t tell them

I remember my heart jumped when I got a beautiful bouquet of flowers one random day at work, not because it was from my boyfriend or a secret admirer, but as a surprise.

I soon discovered that it was my close friend who’d sent me the unexpected gift, just because he knew how depressed I felt after realizing my ex no longer cared about me. It wasn’t the gift alone that made my whole week brighter, it was his thoughts.

The takeaway here? Don’t tell people what you’re going to get or do for them because then they expect you to deliver. Give them a surprise — it’s much more memorable and impactful than doing what you’ve promised.

2. Say “no” when you (really) don’t want to

People respect those who speak their minds, more so than someone who always agrees with their request or invitation. Because when you say “no” to others, people see how real you are, that you have priorities and can be honest about your feelings.

Yes, saying the “n” word might make your stomach flip but if you can get past that feeling, you’ll start feeling good about yourself.

If you don’t treat yourself like number one, then others will treat you like number two.

3. Do something nice for a stranger

Hold the door if their hands are full. Warn them before they sit on a wet seat. Pick up their dropped cash. These are things most people won’t do, but will give respect if you do.

4. Leave your ego behind & learn from those who are better than you

You can complain all you want about how life sucks, and keep asking yourself, why am I not as smart, rich, likeable, successful, influential, or as good-looking as my better unequal? But at the end of the day, you’re not helping yourself grow. You’re not trying to become better.

Take the time to study what makes others shine. Practice over and over again. Ask if you need to. Because if you want to be the best, you have to be willing to learn from the best.

5. Be curious about everything

It’s fun talking with others, but the moment the conversation dies because no one has anything else to say is when you start getting bored of that person. Don’t be that person, the one anxiously looking away while racking your brain for a good topic.

If you want to save yourself from that situation, you got to make people curious about you and the only way is if you’re curious yourself. Learn how things work. Ask yourself why people behave the way they do. Read about what’s happening in the world right now.

Because when you have a dozen more things to say, we automatically think you’re a smart and fascinating companion.

6. Stay calm when someone’s angry at you

It’s not a pleasant sight to see someone screaming angrily or lashing out in a destructive way. And sometimes we just can’t help but lash back.

Don’t. Before you snap, take a minute to think about the whole situation and why you’re feeling so angry. Maybe there was some miscommunication between you two and maybe it’s best to stay calm and talk it out.

This is probably the best solution to understanding people better and feeling more closely connected to them.

7. Start conversations with someone new

Most of us feel scared when we’re away from our comfort groups, which makes it easier for people to see who’s confident and who’s not. For me, I’d always scout around for those who introduce themselves to others, because I know they’re the types who are completely comfortable in their own skin.

Break out of your comfort zone and talk with somebody you’ve never met. You’ll instantly surprise them (see point #1) and walk away with greater confidence.

8. Write a list on what you want to learn

It drives me insane every time someone tells me that they’re bored and have no idea what to do. Or if they waste their time sleeping or watching TV all day.

Yes, people would tell me just “live in the moment” and have fun, but to be honest, that’s a very short-term point of view. What makes you more attractive in the long run is getting smarter and learning new things, everyday.

A suggestion I’d recommend that a friend recommended me is writing a list of all the things you don’t know or have little knowledge about. Update that list whenever you come across a topic that puzzles you and research it when you have time.

9. Saying thank you

It’s simple, overused at times, but still can make a world’s difference to someone’s day. All it takes is a couple seconds to think about and appreciate what you are given, even if it’s something small like a hug.

Remember: Thank others when you really mean it, but not to the point where you go overboard (otherwise it starts to lose its meaning).

10. Make time for yourself

If there’s one thing you can’t recover in life, it’s time. That’s why people who are constantly busy doing things they like or can improve on end up becoming more successful than someone who treats their time as if it were a measly dollar — you can waste it in a flash, but it’s something people use to build a life that’s worth living.

Remember, the most attractive thing about you has less to do with your face and body, but more with your heart and habits.
