It was a night filled with raw energy, held in the creative heart of Lagos as Xfactor Lounge Surulere hosted the first ever of Mainland edition of the LoudNProudLive#PremiumPlatform namely ‘ONE NITE: LIVE & UNPLUGGED WITH MUMA GEE’

A full house together with a super charged atmosphere, LIT from jump with Ambassador Elajoe on MC duties & warm up artists MTrill, OC, Surprise and GBT winner SQUI tight performances in the lead up to Muma Gee’s return to the music stage after an absence of almost 6 years. She did not disappoint – her zest and passion for music’s centre stage was evident.

Muma Gee was simply electric on stage – a seasoned musician recounting stories of the trials and tribulations of her personal life, motherhood and marital/spousal challenges – bringing her beautiful babies to the stage for a brief appearance. It was a gritty, raw and honest live performance set, full of integrity with
nothing sugar coated.

It is evident MUMA GEE, from her own chants ‘Dey not ready for me in dis industry’ & ‘Dey neva see nuttin’ is not going anywhere. We welcome back this powerhouse of a Diva energised, rebranded and ready to take the industry by storm as shown by a surprise & impromptu performance with Afrobeat legend Dede Mabiaku present as a guest. They collectively had everyone up in a frenzy of appreciation – two
legends, real music, it was a music master class in live music entertainment. The perfect comeback show performance Muma Gee aka ‘Queen of African music’ – we salute you!

Music/Radio / Yoruba Language: The Key To Mainstream Music In Nigeria? by magazineguy(m): 9:45am On Aug 30, 2017
Acceptance is what every music artist wants for their music materials and their brand. Acceptance is the main objective of every artist dropping songs and promoting their materials; getting people to accept one’s brand and style is not an easy feat to achieve especially in the Nigerian music industry where a lot of talents abound and new talents are being discovered everyday. From proper promotion, following current musical trends, incorporating relatable yoruba lyrics and making use of very good beats, mainstream success is what every serious artist craves for in their career.

In the Nigerian music industry, one of the ingredients that can ensure proper acceptance and wide spread success of a song is the inclusion of Yoruba language bits in the song. There are certain factors that contribute to this essential skill every artist today that is hoping to go mainstream must understand:

Lagos As The Capital Of Entertainment

Like it or not, Lagos is the capital of entertainment in Nigeria. Every major artist and record label have their headquarters and ply their trade in Lagos; Lagos is also where the clubs are, the top studios, the promoters, the shows, the radio stations and all that is needed for a successful “mainstream” musical career. Even the Alaba international market where your song must first ‘blow’ and which is controlled by the Igbos is in Lagos. As we would have it, Lagos is a western state with majority of its residents speaking Yoruba as the first language, no wonder artistes from the North and East rush to Lagos once they have a thriving career in their region and try every possible means to go mainstream which includes featuring Yoruba artistes – Phyno ft Olamide – Ghost Mode, Ill Bliss ft Terry G – Aye Pon Gan, Zoro ft Lil Kesh and YCEE – Ogene, Iceprince ft Brymo – Oleku

Record Labels And Radio Plays

This is connected with the first fact, Record labels understand the market better and nobody wants to invest without hoping to make profit. People must be able to relate to your songs and if at least 30,000 Lagosians whom will listen to your song being promoted on Cool FM, Beat FM etc can relate with your Yoruba slang and lyrics, you know you are going somewhere already. So record labels sometimes enforce this option on their signed artists in order to gain wider access and push their artistes. It should also be noted that radio stations may want to appeal majorly to the higher percentage of their listeners which lead to playing more Yoruba influenced songs.

Historical Antecedent

Fela Anikulapo Kuti is the one of greatest musician to come out of Nigeria. He had a lot of international recognition and he is well respected. He is Yoruba. Ebenezer Obey, Sir Shina Peters, Adewale Ayuba, Dele Taiwo, Dipo Sodipo, Barrister Kollington are all well known and respected Nigerian musicians that perform in all parts of the country. Many artists tend are in cognizance to this fact and thus resort to adopting the language these legends used in creating good music and getting across to fans. Many artists today are all trying to follow the footsteps of Fela and how can you follow Fela if you don’t use some elements of his music like his language which is Yoruba?

Population And Culture

Yorubas are one of the most populated tribes in the country and the fact that they are mostly literates that have the taste for good music also contributes to this fact. We must not also forget that the Yorubas throw parties (owambes) a lot and if you as an artiste want your song at constant rotation at the numerous Yoruba parties and consequently more shows, be ready to infuse Yoruba in one of your songs. Words like ‘mojisola peperenpe oo, folake ooo’ and you are mainstream.

Present Examples

Mention top ten most respected and popular artistes in Nigeria today and six of them will be Yoruba or artistes that infuse Yoruba or practically sing with Yoruba language as lyrics. Artistes who use the Yoruba language are more widely known and successful with chances of cutting across the country as a whole. It’s either you feature a Yoruba speaking artiste or do one or two songs in Yoruba, though you might use or sing in other languages, Yoruba is inevitable.

Factors like diversity should also be taken into consideration. The Yoruba music has a lot of genres under it with a lot of options available to the artistes. There is Juju, Apala, Dadakuada, Fuji and many more. This makes it easier for artistes to choose among the diverse genres and fit in (as seen in Terry Apala who hails from Delta and sings Apala music). The fact that Yoruba language is pleasing to the ear, can be easily learnt and repeated by anyone in minutes when heard in a song also contributes to its usage in most Nigerians song.

Finally, it is pertinent to know that not every artiste may want to go mainstream as long as they are making their money in their little region, locality or area which they lord over. There are artistes that do indigenous music and are well known such as Zarki, Fanzy Papaya, Sani Danja, Slow Dogg and others but with the exceptions of artistes like Phyno, Flavour and maybe Timaya, the big question remains “how far have they gone in penetrating the Nigerian market and African market at large?

Romance / Re: 5 Stages Of Heartbreak Ladies Go Through by magazineguy(m): 8:29am On Aug 30, 2017
lalasticala, let's help get more ladies thoughts on this
Romance / 5 Stages Of Heartbreak Ladies Go Through by magazineguy(m): 5:31pm On Aug 29, 2017
Breakups are never easy to deal with. Relationships can go wrong so fast. One minute you’re telling each other how much you’re in love and the next minute you’re lying in bed with a pillow over your head, sheets soaked in tears wondering where it all went wrong. Of course this only applies if you’re the dumpee and not the dumper.

Just like there are stages of grief, there are also stages of heartbreak which any girl who has ever been dumped should be able to relate to.

Disbelief

This is the first stage. You get dumped and you really can’t believe it. If you get dumped via text, you read the message over and over again. If you get dumped in person or over the phone, you replay the entire scenario repeatedly in your head. Telling yourself that maybe you missed something, maybe you misunderstood…like the message wasn’t clear enough.

Sadness

This stage can come after anger (which is the third stage) but in most cases it comes before. This is when you sit in bed and cry if you’re a crier or you listen to songs that remind you of your now ex. You wear his hoodie, you read old text messages. You want to call but you really don’t want to feel pathetic so instead you eat and eat and eat and cry and eat some more. You cuddle with the teddy he bought you, you look at old pictures. This stage is usually the longest. It could last from a couple of days to a week or even more in some cases. If you can pass through this stage without calling or sending a text then you’re greater than most dumpees.

Anger

In this stage, you’re pissed that you got dumped. You want to know the reason or reasons. You want a clearer understanding of what went wrong. You delete pictures, delete text messages. Write a few hateful texts which you read and reread and then delete. Tempted to throw out his hoodie but then it’s really comfortable so you decide to keep it till you get a new one from the next guy. You call your friends and vent and you all hate him together.

Acceptance

This is the stage where you begin to accept that you’re broken up and there’s no changing what happened. You stop getting excited every time your phone rings hoping it’s him. You stop hoping he’ll text. You go about your usual activities without a knot in your chest, you breathe easier. You sleep better. This stage lasts the longest. You tell yourself you’ll remain single, take a break from relationships for a while and usually that’s what happens. This should be the last stage but no, there’s one more.

Flirt Stages

When you can finally go out and flirt meaninglessly. Give wink or two. You go out with your friends and meet new people. When you’re able to do all that without thinking of your ex then you have successfully completed one breakup cycle.

After going through all the stages from disbelief to acceptance and finally the flirt stage, then you can start a new relationship whenever you meet that person. Most people take weeks to go through the stages, some take months and they relapse interchangeably going from sadness to anger and back to sadness again. It’s important to know that this is normal and a lot of dumpees go through it.

Keep in mind that if the same person makes you go through all five stages more than twice, then that person isn’t right for you and you should not accept the next apology.

Literature / Mimi – A Fiction Story By Phidelia Imiegha by magazineguy(m): 7:43am On Aug 29, 2017
Mimi returned to her room after a long day of sitting upright in a chair, staring at a projector screen and listening to her tutor go on and on about the art of character development. This was the sixth day of a writing workshop she was participating in and she had already gotten tired of the long hours she spent at the classes. Thankful that there were no lectures slated for the next day, she had taken a long shower and had her dinner very early. She was about to get into bed and curl up with her current favorite book, Questions for Ada, when she heard the shrill tone of her room intercom. She rolled her eyes and picked up the receiver.

“Hello?”

“Mimi?”

“Who is this?”

“It’s Segun. I’m sorry, were you sleeping?”

“Oh, Segun. No I wasn’t. What’s up?”

“Nothing really, I’m going down to the bar to have a drink, I was wondering if you wanted to come”

“I was actually about to sleep” she said.

“Come on, I really don’t want to be at the bar alone, please”

“I’m pretty sure that’s not a possibility. The whole squad is out there.”

He laughed. She had caught him.

“Fine. I want to be there with you. Please”

“Alright.” She gave in, “Just for a bit. I’ll meet you there”

She dropped the receiver and sighed.

Spending the past few evenings with Segun had caused her to develop a fondness for him and she could hardly say no to his requests to share a drink at the bar every other evening. He always sat across from her during their classes, engrossed with the half caste Fulani girl and the Igbo girl with a big bum. She had started feeling jealous, wondering why he never sat beside her in class but always wanted to spend his evenings at the bar with her. She frowned a little as she put on a simple black dress and a pair of white slippers. She had known Segun before the workshop. He was one of those popular writers in her social media circle who somehow seemed to have a new story on a big magazine every week while she struggled for months to write a decent story, and received rejection mail after rejection mail. She always thought Segun was snobbish and elitist with his many overly intellectual arguments on twitter. She had engaged him in a heated debate once about religion, dismissing his opinions that organized religion was a stupid practice. She had been so angry at his views that she blocked his account midway into the debate. Weeks later, on one of her many sleepless nights, she unblocked his account, realizing how silly it was of her.

On the first day of the workshop, during introductions, she spotted him across the table from her and felt her heartbeat quicken. He caught her gaze and flashed her a smile and she broke into an awkward laughter. He cornered her at the close of classes that day and invited her to settle her scores with him over drinks. Segun turned out to be a sweet and jovial boy who never failed to pay her a compliment, as well as all the other ladies at the workshop with them. He was popular among the ladies, most girls wanted to be seated with him during classes and meals. Mimi was not sure whether to feel annoyed or flattered at his daily invites to have drinks with him at the bar.

*****

Segun was sitting alone at a table, waiting for Mimi to show up. He had a cold bottle of orijin in his hands as he moved his head to the loud music playing from the speakers around the bar. All around him, his fellow workshop participants were seated in pairs and groups, sharing drinks and having heated discussions. Everyone knew he spent his evenings with Mimi so no one bothered joining him, they said hi, and kept moving. He kept glancing up from his phone to look at the door, hoping to see Mimi walk in. He couldn’t understand the intense attraction and fondness he felt for her. Mimi was quiet but opinionated and stubborn when she finally spoke, all the things that made him desperately want to unravel her. He avoided her during their workshop classes because he could never quite focus when he was around her. He had known her on social media for years, reading her stories and memoirs. When he heard from a mutual contact that she would also be at the workshop, he had made up his mind to form a friendship with her. He hadn’t imagined it would be easy, considering how much she hated his guts.

He kept his eyes fixed on the entrance and finally, his eyes caught her familiar figure walk into the room. He watched her span her eyes around the room looking for him, eyes squinted because she was a short-sighted woman who refused to wear prescribed glasses. He waved his hands, and smiled as she spotted him and walked towards him.

“Orijin? Urgh!” She scrunched her nose at his drink as she took the seat opposite him.

“What do you know about alcohol?” He asked, laughing.

“I know it tastes like vomit” She rolled her eyes.

Segun signaled the bartender to take Mimi’s order.

“Order your malt now… isn’t that your regular drink?” he said still laughing when the bartender asked her what she would take.

Mimi laughed as well, slapping Segun’s hand playfully.

She turned to the waiter, smiling, and said, “I want a bottle of your best red wine please”, and when he turned to leave, she added, “and two shots of tequila”

The waiter nodded and walked off.

“Ooooooh someone is going to show me she can drink tonight”, Segun teased.

“I’m not trying to show you anything please”, she laughed, “I just feel like letting loose a bit. I might as well have some fun since we have nothing to do tomorrow”

Raising his bottle up as if in a toast, Segun said, “I’m in.”

A couple of minutes later, the bartender returned with their drinks on a tray, expertly balanced on one hand, bill in another hand, and a smile plastered on his sweaty face.

“Thank you”, Mimi said as he dropped the drinks and the bill on the table and walked off.

She picked up the glasses of tequila and handed one to Segun. They both raised up their glasses in a toast.

“What are we drinking to?” She asked.

“To successfully completing the first week of workshop, to new friendships and to the beautiful lady sitting by me.” He said, and they clinked their glasses while laughing.

Segun swallowed his drink immediately, just in time to watch Mimi gulp down the tequila in one swallow. He laughed as she winced and tapped her chest to ease the burn of the tequila in her chest.

“Don’t worry”, he said handing her a slice of lime, “it’s a good start.”

She glared at him and said, “Please! I’m a pro at this”

“Sure”, he replied and they laughed.

Mimi poured out a glass of wine and handed it to Segun pushing his bottle of orijin aside.

He laughed as he picked up the glass.

“So, are you finally going to tell me why you blocked me on twitter?” Michael asked grinning.

Mimi laughed. She had been evading the question all week.

“You annoyed me” She said, “that’s all I will say.”

“Yes ma’am” Segun said.

Mimi stood up, refilled her wine glass and beckoned to Segun.

“Come on, let’s dance.”

Segun took her hand and allowed her lead him to the middle of the room.

“It’s not a dancefloor, but it will do.” She said.

The tequila had loosened Mimi up and on the dancefloor, she found herself performing dance moves she didn’t know she had in her. She turned her back to Segun, wiggling her waist and laughing loudly, not caring that they were the only ones dancing in the room. She took Segun’s hands and put them around her waist, pressing closely into him until she could feel his heart beating. He whispered something in her ear that she didn’t hear but she laughed anyway. They danced and laughed until they were out of breath.

Segun ordered two shots of tequila as they returned to their table. This time, Mimi drank it without tapping her chest.

Two hours, an empty bottle of wine, and three more shots of tequila each later, Segun and Mimi made their way upstairs to their rooms, both tipsy and walking hand in hand. Segun offered to walk Mimi to her room. When they got to her door, they both stopped, smiling.

“I really had fun tonight”, Segun said, looking into her eyes.

They were standing facing each other, Mimi’s back against her door, their noses almost touching, their breaths audible and the tension in the air palpable.

“Me too”, Mimi said, surprised at how shaky her voice sounded and how rapidly her heart was beating. She cleared her throat when Segun didn’t say anything and said,

“Soooo….”

“Soooo…” He echoed.

Segun began to lean in closer to her, never shifting his gaze from her eyes. As he leaned in, she licked her full lips slowly as if daring him to kiss her. When their lips finally met, the world around them exploded. She kissed him slowly at first, as if testing the waters. Moments later, she intensified the kiss, placing her hands around his neck. He grabbed her waist possessively and kissed her deeper. In that moment, she was his and he relished it.

She was the first to pull away, smiling and touching her lips.

“Whew”, she breathed still looking at him, “I’m gonna go inside now”, she said when she finally found her voice. She stood there for a second, and Segun thought she was going to invite him in but she unlocked her door and went in without looking back.

Segun stood there staring at the door, torn between knocking on her door or walking away.

Sports / With 3 Matches Gone, Do You Think The EPL Is Divisive? by magazineguy(m): 4:58pm On Aug 28, 2017
When the league kicked off on the weekend of August 11th, many football fans were overjoyed with huge sighs of relief – the long summer break was really hell for some. You can imagine being stuck with music videos, Telemundo and Zee World. Although, there was mild compensation in pre-season games but the television right was not really given lest one has to stream these matches online.

The English Premier League started with a shocking tie between one-time champions Leicester City FC and Arsenal FC; this game produced seven goals if we remember. Nobody expected it. Leicester actually got their rhythm and flow on a roll. Arsenal was really punished and eyebrows were raised again about Wenger’s competence after signing two years contract at the beginning of the summer break. But as luck would have it, Wenger’s double substitution of Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud proved to be the headliner as the two got on the score sheet to cover Wenger’s shambles. Arsenal’s next two games are a write-off as they went to lose to both Stoke City and Liverpool and the fans will continue their outcry, calling for Wenger’s head. Alexis Sanchez was brought in for the first time this season and the Chilean showed no sign of commitment in the game against Liverpool FC. I wouldn’t be surprised if he aborts ship despite just three days to the close of the transfer window.

Chelsea was made to experience the Champions voodoo as they started the season off with a loss to Burnley and pundits were made to criticize Conte and his team but win against Tottenham Hotspurs at Wembley, Spurs’ home for this season was made to calm the situation at Chelsea. Another dominant win against Everton was enough to silent the criticism – at least for now.

Manchester United have been in top form winning all three games so far without conceding. It is no surprise as Mourinho made two of the best signings in Matic and Lukaku and both of them have been on fire so far. Mourinho will hope to do well and repeat his success in Europe last season as he has the depth in his squad to inveigle in all competitions this season.

Liverpool started off with a draw but their last two games have been excellent with wins in both. The team has been drawing inspiration with the form of trio of Mane, Firmino and Salah. Klopp’s failure to add quality legs asides Salah’s to his squad will be questioned when they return to European scene after their hiatus.

This is just an English Premier League lover’s opinion but you are seeing the light that it is the little mistakes that decide and lay wrath on the teams that are not smart from the beginning of the campaign. Although there is still a transfer window in January but one many of the teams are ready to part ways with their best players?

I agree with you and I understand but we are in a country where people talk more than actually work. Maybe I picked a wrong tone from your comment. Apologies

The dude has started already and he probably doesn't have so much experience, so there should be more applause than castigating. We are all here for the learning and motivation.

This is totally wrong as a consultant.

You didn't wake up one morning and became a consultant, you had a bit of your own experience before venturing into consultancy.
It is his business and he has decided to invest 7.5M into it and he came here for better exposure and maybe to motivates others. Talking down on his business move may send a form of discouragement to him. Most times it is best to have your own first-hand experience yourself.

When i first ventured into farming on two plots of land, some older men tried managing my funds giving advice here and there. In the end there was no profit, lost the farm and I felt bad towards them.

Now I have my 8 plots of land and doing it my way with happiness and joy. From time to time I seek advice which I believe is why the op brought it here for better advice.

Business / 6 Qualities To Look Out For When Selecting Team For A Budding Business by magazineguy(m): 7:54am On Aug 28, 2017
Starting a new business comes with great challenges that require careful planning and coordination. Activities are supposed to be designed and executed in manners that will result in success. While selection of people are not to be done based on narrow assessment of their competence which can lead to haphazard allocation of roles and responsibilities, consideration should be given to areas such as:

Specialty

Specialization helps to easily bring forth ease, speed and quality output. Team members should be placed in areas where they can function without hassles especially when a startup’s budget is not much.

Motivation

The zeal to keep moving forward and also exhibit total dedication or commitment to the task ahead of the team is very sacrosanct. This is a very important quality that every member of a team should exhibit especially those occupying key roles to enable them inspire and influence subordinates.

Team Player

A team player is someone who will easily get along with other members in the group to work towards the achievement of collective goals; team players not only relate easily with other team members but are also committed to aiding other towards realizing their full potentials.

Smartness

Smart people are very creative and can always come up with initiatives to get around challenging tasks. Their inputs are always useful and they function with little or no supervision.

Optimism

At the budding stage of most businesses, the future is bleak and revenues are slow. A shared belief of optimism will carry members far and also enable them to achieve greatness within a short period of time.

Communication

Communication as a business skill cannot be underestimated; it entails writing, spoken and listening skills. For a group member to function well within the group and also deal well with the customers and the outside world, he/she must exhibit a high level of communication skills.

Music/Radio / Pon Pon Music: A New Genre Of Music Here To Stay - By Synord by magazineguy(m): 8:48am On Aug 26, 2017
When Davido Adeleke announced he was returning back to the basics and going back to his African style of music after being forced by Sony to do western style of music which resulted in the coldly received “Son of Mercy” EP, many were expectant of the results of his new strategy. That back to basics strategy birthed the monster hit “IF” and brought Davido back into the certified hit status.

The song which was laced on an instrumental with snares and percussion was very melodious with its distinct kick sounds of Pon Pon and went on to become a mega hit in the country with one of the song lines ‘30 billion for the akant o’

Davido capitalizing on the success of IF, went ahead to record another song similar and laced on the Pon Pon styled instrumental and he titled it “FALL”; FALL is doing incredibly well also. Many noticed this trend and called out the star but he addressed them in Olamide’s Summer Body even shouting Pon Pon at the beginning of the track..

For Davido, Pon Pon represents the African sound which has been termed local and despite this, he is sticking to the local sound claiming it is paying him more. He went ahead to diss Wizkid for his so called western sounds claiming all other sounds apart from the local Pon Pon sound is not relevant and Wizkid responded that artistes either stay local or try and move to the international scene..

Recently, Wizkid released a MasterKraft produced track titled ‘Medicine’, a typical example of the Pon Pon styled music taking over the industry. He followed up with Odoo, again produced by MasterKraft, another musical piece with the Pon Pon instrumentation. Wizkid went as far as ensuring a remix with Phyno and Flavour was made.

Apparently, the battle between Wizkid and Davido is not ending anytime soon as fans have began comparing who is killing the Pon Pon African sound more.

It seems every body is now jumping on the Pon Pon wave. From Tekno who claimed to be the Pon Pon king with songs like Yawa, Rara to Mayourkun with the smash hit Mama and the Mega smash hit “Mad over you” by Runtown, we might just be in for a new genre of music that will rule the Nigerian music industry for the rest of the year and probably next year as every artiste looks forward to dropping a number one single and the Pon Pon styled singles seems to be a sure way to achieve this feat.

Whoever fans stick with and whoever the Creator of this new appealing sound is, one thing is for sure, other artists are jumping on the Pon Pon wave and African music is ready to take over the world. The person pushing it matters not, the desired goal is worldwide acceptance of our music, artistes and culture and we are getting there.

Celebrities / “My Vision Is Bigger Than Nigeria” – Bemyoda by magazineguy(m): 2:58pm On Aug 24, 2017
The gift of music and the exposure of a widely read man are evident in the way Bemyoda talks, and in his general attitude to life. Knowledge and drive are traceable in his utterances and his demeanour. The blend of all these fine qualities forms the theme of the music he makes.

He makes music with consciousness; consciousness of his personal life, consciousness of the people around him and that of the society. He tells stories to his audience; through his music and the images he captures. He leads them to think, to imagine and to find answers to questions about life. His music is too beautiful not to be heard, his versatility would not let him resist the temptation of experimenting with different music genres, his goals appears too big for a small mind, art, is the best way to describe what he does.

Culture / Between Gender Roles And Gender Pressure? by magazineguy(m): 7:41am On Aug 24, 2017
A friend had asked me why young girls didn’t seem like they were interested in working or making a career for themselves, rather they were only interested in being dependent on some guy who was supposed to be a life saviour of some sort, and this gave me a lot to think and inadvertently write about.

Let us look at a typical Nigerian home. Parents would say to the guy “you have to learn to be responsible as one day you would have to provide for the needs of your family“. In other words, emphasis is placed on the fact that the male child needs to get a job, build a career so he can not only compete with other males in the society for the position of alpha male but also that he can cater for a family one day. This is not a bad thing at all. Now, let’s looks at how the girl child is raised. For the girl child, she is constantly reminded about how she needs to find a husband, how she needs to cook, clean because one day, she would be under a man.

Everything I have mentioned above is not bad but when do we cross the lines of gender roles to gender pressure? I am of the opinion that each gender should be allowed to be as fluid as they want. Too much pressure is put on men and too little push is given to our girls and you wonder why the girls do not want to strive hard to be the best they can be?

Let us cast our minds back to our families, as a girl-child when was the last time your parents asked you what your plans for after school life was? My heart even goes out to those ones whose parents just keep asking them to find a husband instead of encouraging them to start a business after two years of joblessness. We need to ask our parents what their priorities are. It is great to look forward to ones child’s wedding but have they bothered to ask how the new couple would feed after the wedding? Or are they breeding a situation where you keep coming to ask for loans from them in the nearest future?

Parents need to sit up and realize that while marriage is a great thing, we the new millennia do not regard it as an achievement because it does not put food on the table. What ensures provision in a family is employment and stability of both parents. So you may want to remind yourself of this when next you tell your girl-child to look for a man who would make all her troubles go away because there is no such man like that.

Celebrities / ‘I Am More About Hustle And Positive Energy’ – Bella by magazineguy(m): 3:01pm On Aug 23, 2017
After introducing YCEE to Nigerian music lovers as an amazing music talent, Tinny Entertainment has spotted another young artiste who has a knack for making the kind of music that gets Nigerians to cheer. This artiste is of the mould of creatives with good understanding of art. She learnt to express herself through poetry, and now that she has found purpose in music making, she uses elements of poetry to make spirited rap verses and bubbly melodies. Her music has brought her out of J-Town, to the center stage of the Nigerian entertainment industry, where she is now growing her followership. The wonderful artiste being talked about is Bella Alubo and she comfortably wears the title of “First lady of Tinny Entertainment.”

A lot of female rappers did not get to stay for long on the music scene, what do you plan to do differently?

I have been making music for 5 years, and in those 5 years I feel like I have accomplished a lot and I feel like my effort has been quite commendable, that I have shown that I am not going to be a one hit wonder, who is about just the fame. If you follow me closely, you’d notice that I am evolving, I am showing different sides of myself and that is how to stay relevant, I guess. You have to remember to evolve with the times; you have to remember to stay fresh, you have to remember to stay new, you have to remember to appeal to people. So my plan is to evolve with the times.

Like the Remy Ma/Nikki Minaj face-off going on, what would be your reaction to a diss?

Personally, I feel like I have grown quite tired of people pitching females against each other. I am more about positive energy, I am more about uniting with other women, and I am more about hustle. I am more about supporting each other and knowing that girls also can collaborate and run things. So if I get a diss now, I would be very surprised if I respond because I don’t like to encourage any sort of negative energy at all.

Art, Graphics & Video / Meet Jerrie Rotimi, A 26 Years Old Lagos-based Photographer by magazineguy(m): 12:46pm On Aug 22, 2017
Meet Jerrie Rotimi, the 26-year-old portrait and fashion photographer who is capturing human emotions one portrait at a time.

Born Jeremiah Rotimi, Jerrie is the first of five children. He grew up in Ikeja, Lagos where he attended Airforce secondary school. He then went on to study Computer Science at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology.

Jerrie Rotimi discovered photography while hanging out with his photographer friend, Tope. He would accompany Tope to shoots, glad to just be there. As time passed, he picked interest in taking photographs and began to shadow his friend while he worked. Naturally, Jerrie followed in Tope’s path of portrait and fashion photography. Jerrie Rotimi soon fell in love with the art of showing the world his subjects through his eyes. With the support of his family, he purchased his first camera and began the journey which has led him to becoming one of the best-known portrait and fashion photographers in Nigeria.

Starting professionally in 2014, he quickly became known in the industry for his distinct style. In his 3-year career, Jerrie has shot campaigns for brands including Iconolabrand, Anncranberry, ShopMaju, Sisiano and T.I Nathan. In addition,he has been commissioned by The Guardian, Blanck Digital UK, Toshiba, Vogue Italia, and Spice Fashion Channel. In 2015, he was the official photographer for the Elite Model Look Nigeria. He has shot portraits for several high-profile Nigerians including Ann-Kio Briggs, Jonathan Mannion, Zainab Balogun, Chris Attoh, Cobhams Asuquo, Dakore Egbuson, Kunle Afolayan, Omawunmi, Uzodinma Iweala, Denrele Edun and Adesua Etomi.

For Jerrie, who is mostly reserved and shy, photography has helped him get better at interacting with people, and brought him out of his shell. When he meets a subject, even one who is a stranger to him, he befriends them through his lens. His lens is a means of entering a stranger’s world, getting to know them and letting the world see them through his eyes. This is obvious in Jerrie’s stunning portraits, which always capture the emotions and nuances of his subjects.

On what his biggest career challenges are, Jerrie said it’s that people don’t rate photography enough in Nigeria as a career field. “They think it’s simply taking pictures and adding filters, but it’s beyond that. It’s amazing how much bigger the business of photography is than people think. Getting people to understand what it entails and to see it as a real business has challenging.”

Jerrie’s passion for his art is obvious in the quality of his pictures. He says that the need to get better is what keeps him going as he is of the belief that practice, doesn’t make perfect, but gives consistency.

Below are some of his photos;

Business / Why Confidence Is Vital In Entrepreneurship by magazineguy(m): 7:00am On Aug 22, 2017
Coming across a young entrepreneur with a very outstanding and sellable product who has low self-esteem has really opened my eyes to one of the setbacks business people encounter. Confidence is vital for business success; entrepreneurs should build confidence and conviction by totally believing in themselves and the products/services they are offering.

As stated by a philosopher named Peter T. Mcintyre, “confidence comes not from always being right but not fearing to be wrong”. With success, growth and fulfillment as the goals of everyone setting for business, it is therefore sacrosanct to understand how confidence influence the rate and pace at which these goals can be achieved. Areas in business where confidence is highly required are:

Starting Out
When entrepreneurs decide to engage in business activities, they are confronted with so many challenges ranging from risking fund, comfort zone and facing uncertainty. Total confidence plus courage is required when you want to start a business and execute winning ideas.

Selling and Marketing

The absence of confidence results in fear and self doubt to the point where an entrepreneur will begin to doubt his business and its offering even before getting to the market. Entrepreneurs need to be bold in order to confront their market and make positive modifications in line with feedback and opinions.

Growth and Expansion
The decision for growth and expansion is strategic and require promptness and accuracy. Business hardly accommodates dilly dallying at whatever stage as competition can easily put someone else ahead of you.

Negotiation
Most deals, acquisitions and partnerships depend on confidence and better negotiation skills. Facebook acquired Whatsapp for jaw-dropping $19bn amount in 2014 and this result can be attributed mostly to the negotiation skills of the guys from the side of Whatsapp.

Celebrities / Is DJ Spinall Nigeria's Most Bankable DJ? by magazineguy(m): 2:58pm On Aug 21, 2017

His fans call him the ‘CAP’ but the alias was not gotten from his fashion success. The CAP in the context of referring to Spinall, means Crazy Ass Party. It is quite easy to guess that he got the name from the many parties that he led wild. DJ Spinall is well known for leading the audience at his shows to the climax of fun. For this reason, he is believed to be one of the most bankable men on deck around. He is comfortably one of the leading disc jockeys in Nigeria and in 2015; Smirn Off named him their brand ambassador.

Across Africa, the name DJ Spinall is taken seriously. He has released hundreds of mixes and entertained fans from many African countries with them. He has made some border crossing African music by collaborating with top music stars in the continent like Sarkodie of Ghana, Sauti Soul of Kenya and Mafikizolo of South Africa. Without doubt he is an international DJ. He is revered for being the first African DJ to perform at the SXSW Festival in USA and the first African DJ to tour Europe. Very recently, he was given the rare privilege to play at the 2017 BET International Awards, which was held in Los Angeles California.

Over the course of his long spanning career, the ‘CAP’ has won multiple awards and has recorded a lot of remarkable achievements. The always smiling DJ stands out as one of the vanguards of the movement of taking Africa to the world, a movement that has Wizkid playing a major role. The star boy is said to be working on a project with the ‘CAP’ and it is believed that their collaboration could make DJ Spinall’s forthcoming album which is scheduled for release in September 2017.

One can only expect more great works from an entertainer who has contributed a lot to the growth of African music already; as he travels from nation to nation, in and out of the continent, projecting the beauty of African art through his music and his powerful performances. DJ Spinall would continue to be cheered by African music lovers as he continues in the path that only great men have walked.

Career / 9 Things Bosses Do That Make Employees Quit by magazineguy(m): 7:28am On Aug 21, 2017
It’s quite alarming how often I hear managers complaining about their employees leaving, and they virtually do have something to complain about – not many things are as expensive and disruptive as good people taking walks out the door.

Managers generally tend to put the blame on every possible thing under the sun and at the same time, ignoring the crux of the problem: people don’t walk away from jobs; they walk away from managers. The really sad part is that this can be averted if bosses would develop a new perspective and attempt to fix themselves first.

In this article, I want to talk about the nine (9) things that managers do that send their best employees out the door.

They overwork their employees

Nothing burns out your employees quite like overworking them. It’s so tempting to work your employees hard that managers often fall into this trap. Overworking your employees is perplexing; it makes them sense as if they’re being punished for their top-notch performance – I once heard a manager say that the reward for a great work is more work. However, overworking employees is also counter-productive. Studies show that productivity per hour declines sharply when the work week exceeds 50 hours, and productivity drops off a lot after 55 hours and at this point, you don’t get anything out of working more.

Should you want to increase how much work your employees are doing, you’d better increase their reputation and status as well. This way, employees will be willing to take on a bigger workload, however they would leave if their job suffocates them in the process. Salary raise and promotions are ideal ways to increase workload. If you sincerely increased workload due to the fact people are good at it, without improving on other aspects of the job that concerns them, they may just be searching for another employer that will give them what they deserve.

They don’t recognize contributions or reward great work

It’s common that people underestimate the power of simple acknowledgment of a great work – call it a pat on the back, especially with employees who are intrinsically motivated. Everybody likes kudos, even these employees who work hard and give their all. Managers need to speak with their people to find out what makes them happy, after which they reward them for a job well done. With great employees, this will be done often if you do it right.

They don’t care about their employees

A huge number of people who leave their jobs do so because of their relationship with their boss. Smart businesses ensure their managers find a way to balance being professional with being human. These are the bosses who take time to celebrate employee achievements, empathize with the ones going through difficult times, and are challenging even if it hurts. Bosses who fail to care will constantly have resignation letters piled up in their mails. It’s very difficult to work for someone from 9-5 everyday when they aren’t individually concerned and don’t care about anything other than you working for them.

They don’t honor their commitments

Making guarantees and promises to employees places you on the great line that lies between making them very happy and watching them stroll out the door. While you uphold a promise, you prove yourself to be honest and honorable (two very essential traits in a boss). But when you brush aside your promise, you come across to your employees as slimy, uncaring, and disrespectful. In the end, if the boss doesn’t honor his or her commitments, why should anybody else?

They employ the wrong people

Employees need to work with like-minded professionals. When managers don’t do the simple hard work of hiring the right people, it’s a chief demotivator for the ones stuck running alongside them. Going on to promote the wrong person(s) is even worse. When you work so hard to get things done right only to get overlooked for a promotion that is then given to a person who didn’t merit the position. It’s a huge insult and can make even the best and most dedicated of employees leave.

They don’t allow employees pursue their passions

Great employees are passionate. Providing opportunities for them to pursue their passions improves their productivity and job delight. But many managers want their employees to work inside a little box. Those managers fear that productiveness will decline in the event that they allow the employees expand their interest and pursue their passions. This worry is unfounded. Studies show that folks who are capable of pursuing their passions at work experience have a euphoric state of mind that is 5 times more efficient than the norm.

They fail to improve their people skills

When managers are asked about their lack of attention to their employees, they try to excuse themselves, saying things like “I trust them,” “autonomy,” and “empowerment.” That is entirely nonsense. Good managers do their jobs, irrespective of how proficient and trustworthy the subordinates are. They pay interest and are continuously listening and giving comments.

Management may have a beginning; however, it really has no end. When you have a skilled employee, it’s up to you to maintain finding areas where they could enhance to improve their skill set. Great employees want feedback and it’s your task to keep it coming. If you don’t, your employees will become bored and complacent.

They fail to engage their creativity

The most proficient employees desire to improve on everything they do. If you eliminate their capacity to change and improve things due to the fact you’re very comfortable with the current state of things, this makes them hate their jobs. Caging up this innate desire to create does not only limit them, it limits you and your business.

They fail to be intellectually challenging

Remarkable bosses task their employees to accomplish things that appear improbable at the beginning. Instead of placing mundane, incremental goals, they set lofty targets that push their employees out of their comfort zones. Then, they do everything they can to help them meet the target. When intelligent professionals find themselves routinely doing things that have become too easy or uninteresting, they start seeking other jobs in the bid to challenge their intellects.

If you want your remarkable staffs to stay, you want to assume carefully about the way you deal with them. Yes, the perfect employees are as tough as nails but then again, their skill set offers them an abundance of alternatives. You want to make sure they are working for you and give you the results you want.

Feeding the body with some foods will keep your body and immune system strong – the body will be resistant to some diseases (of course not all). There are also foods out there that are capable of healing flu or a mild form of cold. It is not difficult- when keeping the body healthy becomes a top priority, going to the grocery should not be a big deal.

Citrus Fruits
Many people find themselves in the succor of Vitamin C especially the whites when they catch a cold. This is because it helps to build up the immune system. Vitamin C is believed to increase the number of white blood cells. Daily Vitamin C is essential for good health. It is easy to add a squeeze of this Vitamin to any meal plan. Citrus is the key to fighting infections and diseases. Examples of citrus fruits include grapefruit, oranges, tangerines, lemons, limes.

Red Bell peppers
Commonly known to Nigerians as tatase, gram red bell peppers contain two times vitamin C as citrus. They are also a rich source of beta carotene. Besides improving the immune system, vitamin C helps to maintain healthy skin. Beta carotene is good for the eyes and skin also.

Garlic
Garlic is used in almost every part of the world. It adds a little zest to foods. It is a must-have for the health. Early civilizations around the globe especially in Egypt and Greece discovered its use in fighting infections. Garlic also helps to lower blood pressure and halts hardening of the arteries. Garlic’s immune-boosting properties are evident in sulphur-containing compounds such as allicin.

One can sweeten plain yoghurts with healthy fruits instead. Yoghurt is a great source of Vitamin D. So, when picking yoghurts, it is advisable to get for the ones fortified with Vitamin D. Sports / Kelechi Iheanacho And Alex Iwobi: The Future Of Nigerian Football by magazineguy(m): 9:04am On Aug 18, 2017
The National team is really a hive of talents and competitiveness has made it a rock today. The Super Eagles of Nigerian have long had prospects we respect – to change the tides and of course bring back the glory days and rich history in our football. Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho fall in this promising category.

But what bewilders us is that, most Nigerians do not know certain things about these guys.

Kelechi Iheanacho grew up in Southern Nigerian as a boy who has long been in love with the round leather game. After coming through the ranks of Taye Academy in Imo, Kelechi Iheanacho finally had the chance to represent Nigeria in the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup where he won the Golden Ball for player of the tournament. Kelechi was later reported to have agreed on a pre-contact with Manchester City football Club of England subject to when he will clock 18 and a work permit. He made a couple of appearances for city’s developmental squad and joined on pre-season to Australia.

Alex on the other hand, was not known prior to him making senior debut for Arsenal F.C. of England at the age of 17. He was actually born in Lagos but his parents left for England in pursue of a greener pasture. Many people do not know that Alex is a nephew to Former Super Eagles Captain and Legend, Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha. The Legend was also instrumental in convincing him to play for his birth country over England. Iwobi was subject to being shipped out of Arsenal in the past even long before he started playing in the senior team of Arsenal F.C.

Nigerians have reacted positively to the five star performances by the duo of Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho. The two youngsters are beginning to gel and show their class and the long success the National team will achieve from their services.

It is baffling how these two players grew under our noses and pundits did not notice this. We did not see Kelechi in the grassroots football or maybe he was still budding and lurking, waiting for the right moment to bloom.

Their types can make the Super Eagles great again if we can assemble young guys like them again. These qualities- consistency, skills and humility will be a great deal to propelling the ship to victory just like the class of ’94.

Iwobi is fluent with his passing and great dynamism on the field of play, he also reads the game for a lad of his age; only few peaked footballers have that exceptional quality. Iheanacho is a striker with clinical finishing and a natural goal scorer. He is instinctive in the box and arrives early to tap in. His ability to play as a second striker and behind the striker gives him an edge of flexibility.

Both guys are here to stay and a search for more fresh legs and talents should begin rather than calling up old legs. We should just hope they do not suffer injuries that will shorten their improving careers and slow them from reaching their peaks.

It is of great note that the bromance between Kelechi and Alex is healthy and good for both of them. The two are always up to mischievous things whenever they come together as seen on Iwobi’s Snapchat. These two will be a force to reckon with in the future.

Celebrities / ‘I Will Surpass The Standard Of MI, Jesse Jagz & Ice Prince’ – Ckay by magazineguy(m): 10:27am On Aug 17, 2017
Chocolate City has become known for its successes at nurturing and guiding music talents to climb the big stage of the music industry. Some of the biggest names in the music industry today are mentioned with reference to the brand that gave them the platform to share their talents with the world, the brand whose style of recruitment and development of music talents has been justified again and again.

This brand recently introduced a new generation of future music superstars to the Nigerian audience, and as expected, the climb to the zenith of the music industry started almost instantly for these artistes. One of such artistes is Ckay, another soldier of destiny, who left the far East to Lagos, to pursue his dream of becoming a music superstar. Ckay comes in a mould of a multi-talented individual whose singing ability is complimented with his ability to produce songs, with these and the resources he hopes to gather along the way, he believes he would be another success story for Chocolate City and personally, he believes he would be sharing spaces in the clouds with other music superstars in the near future.

Ckay discussed his childhood, his music and his targets in an interview. Excerpts from the interview:

Tell us about yourself

I am Chukwuka Ekeani aka Ckay. I’m a native of Anambra, I was born in Kaduna. I started singing since I was like 4. I started playing the piano at 7. I started producing at 12 -13 and writing music started for me at that time too. I started music officially, in Lagos, in 2014. So, there are many dates in there.

Do you think you can meet the standard that M.I, Jesse Jagz and Ice Prince have set?

Yeah we can meet the standard and beat it. Let me go the bible, it says that the glory of the latter shall be greater than that of the former. It is only right and it is what they want too, that we do more than what they did. For instance, Tuface, D’banj took it to some point and the next generation took it further. D’banj got signed to Kanye West’s record label; Wizkid is taking it even further. So, the next generation always takes it further. I believe we can do take it further.

Celebrities / Kriz Beatz: A Music Production Giant On The Rise by magazineguy(m): 7:39am On Aug 15, 2017
If you are a lover of Nigerian music and you follow the industry trends, then we probably have one thing in common, the love for the Tekno performed song Pana. The song is such a hit that it played from speaker to speaker across the length and breadth of the country. At some point, it was even referred to as the “national anthem,” to show the wide circulation that the song got.

In some quarters, the song is considered the biggest song in Nigeria for the year 2016. The song is perhaps enjoying more commercial success than was initially expected and it seems fans across the world are pleasantly surprised at the beauty of the song. Tekno is getting all the praise for coming through on the song but really, a fair share of the praise should go to the brain behind the sound, in person of Kriz Beatz, who likes to be called the Drummer Boy.

The dread-haired producer whose real name is Chris Alvin Sunday, created the masterpiece. From my observation, the Pana sound is made in such a way that the originality of the African sound is held firm while other musical elements were used to compliment it, making the sound so infectiously beautiful that even Ludacris and Trey Songs from outside of Africa, recognized its beauty.

This brilliance of sound has now become the trade mark for Kriz Beatz, who pulled off a similar showpiece on RunTown’s For Life. The producer, who also entertains as a DJ, seems to know the sound that Naija people like and how to make it. On most of his other works the creative touch and the charm is usually very evident. A good music observer would have noticed the varying degree to which he experiments with Indian sounds. This adds to the dance appeal of his sound, which usually comes out as fine music to the ear.

The budding producer, who studied Music Technology in South Africa, has made his sound, his most vocal tool. For him, through production he gets to express himself. He would be releasing an album sometime later in 2017, and his lineup of featured artistes looks like a team of avengers. Names likes Wande Coal, Burna Boy, Runtown, Davido, Yemi Alade, Nasty C, Mafikizolo, Sauti Soul, Skales, Teckno, were listed. According to him, the album would be a combination of sounds, with its major component being Electronic mus

Without doubt, Kriz Beatz has taken the life of Nigerian producer in stride. In the short time he has appeared on the scene, he has already worked on some interesting projects and he looks set to do even more. It would be an interesting wait to see who wins the 2017 producer of the year award, a category in which Kriz Beatz has a good claim. However, for those observing, it should be clear from here that a music production giant is on the rise.

Business / ‘FG Should Recognize Media Houses As Exporters’ - Rich Tanksley [Ex-CEO PulseNg] by magazineguy(m): 2:15pm On Aug 14, 2017
Not many people get to live the life of a CEO, and at the same time, live the life of a movie star. Any of the two is enough achievement for most people, but Rich Tanksley has managed to excel in both. He is a successful brand builder, an I.T specialist and a fine thespian.

The former CEO of PULSE Nigeria and star of the TV show, Husbands of Lagos sat with Behind Magazine and gave so many interesting hindsight of his stay in Nigeria so far. Read excerpts of his interview;

How did the PULSE media idea develop?

Pulse is owned by a parent company which is based in Switzerland. It is the oldest and largest media company in Switzerland, called Ringier. They have registered some success in other developing markets and they decided that Africa was the next place to go. So about 5 years ago, they established a media company in Nigeria called PULSE. The vision was basically to go into the next emerging market and capture some market share. So PULSE hired me over two years ago to take what was sort of a foundation, as the head to the next level.

Speaking about the next level, what is the vision for PULSE in Africa?

Pulse wants to be in every market in Africa, they want to be the largest pan African media company and they are kind of on their way to doing that. PULSE now has properties in Ghana; they are building one in Kenya right now, they also have different media properties in Senegal, Ethiopia and Tanzania but you know; I retired as CEO of PULSE about six months ago. So as CEO for 2 years, I built it from nothing to 5 million monthly visitors and then, I retired. Now, my title at PULSE is Brand Ambassador, although I still work with them mostly as an advisor.

There is a lot of discussion going on in Nigeria presently, on youths taking up positions of power, what do you think is the contribution of the media to achieving this?

First of all, new media, which is basically all media now, online, social media and the likes, is run by young people. In PULSE, I think the average age of the employees hired is, 24. Whereas if you look at traditional media, like newspapers, the average age of people working there and reading there, is older than the average life expectancy for a Nigerian, so it is a dead business. Whereas, the new media is run by young people, the young people are creating the narrative; they are creating what gets said and how it gets said. So, I think the media is already an amazing tool for the young people and I think they should utilize it.

What was the impact of government policy on PULSE, when you were CEO?

Government policy did not really affect PULSE that much. The government seems too slow to regulate quick moving industries, so I don’t think there is any regulation about starting a media company. PULSE, we were an exporter; we created the content locally and exported it to US, UK. 30% of our traffic came from the US, UK. So things we created here, and we exported it, but the government did not recognize us as exporters. They did not give any tax benefits, no breaks, nothing, even though we were exporting something that we developed here. There should give incentives for exporters but they did not. It is much easier to do your work and not bother the government.

Business / Four Ways To Prevent Business Failure by magazineguy(m): 7:48am On Aug 14, 2017
Business requires winning strategies to succeed, and it is a fact that thousands of businesses fold daily at both start-up and growth stages. Many business owners have found themselves at a crossroad where the most tempting option is to throw in the towel but few are able to wade through the problems and come out victorious. Business failure is avoidable if the business is well executed.

The business sphere is a delicate space that can easily swallow one’s confidence and self esteem in the event of failures and in order to prevent these at all the stages of a business, an entrepreneur has to adopt the following methods:

Location
This is the first major decision in the execution of a business plan. Locate a business where there is ample need for its offerings and also ascertain the purchasing power of the inhabitants of the business location before sitting the business. And in addition to this, ensure quality at all times. A bad location can cripple a great business dream as a result of low or no patronage at all leading to business failure.

Team
Make sure you have a team that is ready to work assiduously towards success all the time. It should contain people with the right drive, confidence, innovative drive and creativity to keep things going smoothly at all times. A team that is motivated well enough internally with focus on success can always overcome the challenges of doing business.

Effective Marketing
At every stage in a business, success is only guaranteed through effective marketing. Your marketing efforts should be coordinated in a manner that it should bring forth positive results.

Decisions Making
This is one of the most vital aspects of doing business; your decisions should be prompt, accurate and positive. Business that does not decide early on technological advancement, modern business trends etc tends to lose out easily to other competing firms.

Celebrities / DJ Spinall & Kehinde Bankole Are The Cover Stars For Behind Magazine’s New Edition by magazineguy(m): 8:49am On Aug 12, 2017

Business / 5 Ways To Validate Your Business Idea by magazineguy(m): 7:02am On Aug 07, 2017
It is one thing to have a great business idea but how sure are you that people will pay for it? We have come across individuals and products whose appearance and features dazzled us to the point that we completely fell head over heels and conclude to believe nothing can stand in their way or stop them from succeeding only to be disappointed by the turn of event. There are reasons why some great ideas sometimes refuse to fly; the major reason is non-flexibility on the side of the idea owners.

It is a complete fact that most successful entrepreneurs and organizations have on several occasions modified their ideas and strategies to achieve better result. It is therefore necessary to pay close attention to business ideas and quickly identify problem areas and initiate timely modification to achieve growth. Validating your idea to ascertain whether it will be a good source of income demands that you:

Come Up With Something New

Several areas of human wanst are begging for solutions and the higher the number of persons affected by the targeted problem the more customers and money your business will generate. Inventing a drug that can cure HIV/AIDS will definitely generate high income for a pharmaceutical company globally.

Seek Opinions

Seeking the opinions of people around you and even total strangers will help validate the financial potential of your business idea. For example if I want to start a restaurant for quick meal and I decided to make noodles and bread my offerings, if I ask my family and friends and several total strangers and everyone shows sincere willingness to pay for noodles and bread, it then means that I can commence business operation.

Conquer The Challenges

Most businesses are daunting at the beginning, so it is better to put your idea action as soon as you are good to go. This way you will be able to easily fine-tune your winning strategies and abide by them after conquering the imminent challenges and initial failure experiences.

Clearly Define Your Market

There is no business when there are no customers, a great business idea must have people or a section of the society it intends to serve.

Make Your Business Idea Better

A business idea that proposes better product or service than the existing alternatives at the best affordable price will yield higher returns. For example if there are e-commerce platforms that do not accept return of orders that don’t meet specification and you decide to offer similar service including accepting returned items which fail to meet specification with pay on delivery option, your business will easily dominate that industry.

Health / 4 Simple Ways To Cure Headache Without Drugs by magazineguy(m): 2:25pm On Aug 02, 2017
A couple of weeks ago I wrote an article on some of the types of headache and their causes [https://www.nairaland.com/3898429/causes-types-headaches]– just a reminder. I have decided to complete the task and started doing some research online and some of these I gathered from old people. But one baffling thing was that, as a kid, my dad had a magazine he subscribed to: READERS’ DIGEST. This was a long time ago though. I doubt if they still roll out prints since the digital era has taken over. I never liked it because it was boring to me then. Fast forward to a decade later, I found myself as a writer and to grow more, I had to read more contents from the past and even the recent age. I took one of the issues from 2005 and found out some natural painkillers. Some are not readily available but you can still find some useful whenever you are in pains and you will feel better in a short while.

Give a good press
In a circular motion with a firm grab, massage the fold of skin between the base of the thumb and the second finger. Massage for several minutes. Switch hands and repeat until the pain subsides.

Heat up and cool down
Believe it or not, soaking the feet in hot water will help the head feel better. This helps to draw blood to the feet and this footbath will reduce the pressure on the blood vessels in the head.

Tip: Add bit of mustard powder to the water for severe cases of headache.

-For tension headache, place a warm compress on the forehead or back of the neck. The heat will help the muscles in the area to relax.
-For all the other types of headache except for the one above, you can apply a cold compress. You can get ice packs and put inside a light cloth and apply to the forehead.
Since headache pain starts from the nerves in back of your neck, move the compress to the muscles at the base of the skull.

The caffeine cure
A cup of strong coffee may do the trick. Caffeine reduces swelling of blood vessels and thus helps in relieving headache.

The gangster remedy
Tie a bandanna, scarf or necktie around the forehead; tighten to the extent where you feel pressure around the head. This will help reduce the blood flow to the scalp and in the process, relieves the pain caused by swollen blood vessels. You can even soak the bandanna in vinegar – an archaic headache remedy.

Career / The Rise Of Machines And The Increase In Job Loss by magazineguy(m): 7:05am On Jul 31, 2017
The situation in the labour market is quite ironic. It is ironic because while most people look to business owners for jobs, these employers are increasingly looking in the direction of machines to get work done.

For quite some time now, it has been said that the concept of industrial labour is evolving, and that the rise of machines and advancement in technology is posing a big challenge to the long term demand for human labour.

There have been signs of the possibility of some professions becoming obsolete at some point, but not everyone can see these signs. A good pointer to support that claim is the fact in the 20s, knocking on people’s door used to be a profession but today, even kids, at a particular age, can do their knocking by themselves.

In case you’re not convinced, consider the fact that people no longer look for post-men to help dispatch their documents; somewhere along the line, the electronic mailing system became a preferred option. So what happened to the many post-men of those days? I guess you can conclude that less of their service was required as the electronic mailing system grew in acceptance.

It is this same threat that hangs over a lot of other professionals today. For instance in the banking industry, where the use of ATM, POS machines and other e-banking services have become faster and more convenient options to having to operate with cashiers, It was on this basis that Ecobank Nigeria recently announced it would be closing down 74 branches, to focus on its electronic banking services, a move that resulted in job cuts for some professionals. The managing director of the bank, Charles Kie, had explained that the bank hoped to shift its activities to digital channels and improve customers’ experience at reduced cost.

Similarly, in the area of Engineering, the automation of jobs is fast gaining grounds. A visit to Dangote Sinotruk West Africa Ltd, located in Lagos, where full range of commercial vehicles covering heavy duty trucks, medium trucks, light trucks are produced, revealed that new technologies are fast replacing human input into vehicle manufacturing.

With fewer workers in the plant, the factory is expected to assemble and produce 10,000 trucks annually. Checks show that their production line including turning over machine, filling machine, inspection line, debugging workshops to finished products are all dominated and driven by high tech with very few humans.

It is easy to conclude that this change in direction of things, affects only middle class professionals, but if you consider the increasing success level of commercializing self-driving cars, one would agree that even skills like driving could become less sellable at some point in the future.

Even as a receptionist, there is an existing threat of your job being automated. In December 2015, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore unveiled a human-like robot, which will work as a receptionist on campus. Not only does the robot have a soft skin and flowing brunette hair, Nadine as she was named, meets and greets visitors. She smiles, makes eye contact and shake hands. She can even recognize past guests and spark up conversation based on previous chats.

A lot of other industries are joining in this wave of automation of jobs. Employers have stated speed and the fact that they don’t have to pay wages as some of the reasons they favour the use of machines in their business operation. Andy Puzdater, the CEO of US-based fast-food chains Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s further stated the reasons for his preference of robots over human workers. In an interview with Business Insider, he said that unlike human workers, robots are “always polite, they always upsell, they never take a vacation, they never show up late, there’s never a slip-and-fall, or an age, sex or race discrimination case.”

With this development in mind, Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC) conducted a research and predicted that by the early 2030s; about 30% of existing UK jobs would have been automated. For the US, German and Japan; the figures are 38%, 35% and 21% respectively. In developing nations like Nigeria, the World Bank president, Jim Yong Kim, warned that they face the risk of losing two-thirds of all existing jobs to automation.

Considering the threat posed by the rise of machines to human labour; it is important to start to look beyond the common topic of how professional your course is or how much salary you earn or the title you hold at work, and start to think about the future of global business with machines handling most of the jobs. As individuals, we need to start to plan on how to stay in business when job automation would have reached a full scale, because it is imminent. It means that machines are the new competitors for your job. They are usually faster, less prone to errors and your boss would like the fact that he does not have to pay them wages. The question now is: what is your edge over machines in this fierce competition to keep your job? The answer lies in your level of creativity.
