PoliticsWhy Banky W Is A Model For Entertainers In Politics by magazineguy(op): 9:12am On Feb 09, 2019
Consider this profile of an artist: proven entrepreneur, informed social commentator who makes conscious music. Then this: a popular musician with numerous hit singles, just as many scandals, and notoriety for glorifying internet fraud and substance abuse through music. If you are to pick from the two, a candidate to occupy an influential public office, what would your choice be? Mr. Socially Conscious or the notorious alternative?

With ease, the former is the likely pick, except you fancy the idea of a gangster in Aso Rock. What separates both artists is image – the first artist is associated with success in business and an understanding of how a society should work; the other is a famous musician with expertise in hedonism. Even if the latter is the more popular of the two, the socially conscious artist still represents a better image for a leader.

This leads to the case of popular singer, Banky W, who announced his political ambition to resounding cheers. The reception that followed the announcement is not just as a result of his fame or due to the factor of his age – a number of youthful entertainers have declared similar ambitions in the past that never raised hopes to the height that Banky’s is currently doing – his identity as an intellect, as a leader and as an advocate is the stimulant of the belief in his ambition.

The raised-hopes that greeted Banky’s declaration can be linked to his exploits in the Entertainment Industry, particularly his achievements with Empire Mates Entertainment (EME), where he has recorded successes at maintaining a prosocial character, mentoring younger artists and in setting himself up as a man with inventive ideas – like the decision to morph EME into a creative agency for continued productivity. These form assessable track-record that a lot of Nigerian politicians can only pretend to possess.

In general, politicians are believed to make the best promises that are never kept, but for Banky, sceptics only make a point of the (lack of) strength of his political structure and his near-zero experience. However, his decision to contest for the Lagos State Eti-Osa Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives, as against higher targets like the gubernatorial and Presidential offices, suggests that there is a measure of realism to his aspiration – and this is important, especially for celebrities and business personalities making their way into politics.

Looking at it, Banky’s decision to make himself available to be elected to represent the people of Eti-Osa Federal Constituency makes proper sense: he has severally demonstrated understanding of the needs of the public, he has a reputation for making good cases for important subjects, he possesses a character that may not be stainless, but it is gold when compared what commonly exists in Nigerian politics. Although the history of elections in Nigeria has shown that it is not enough to have a good profile, Banky has made a significant impression with his declaration of ambition, while also standing out as a model for his colleagues in entertainment industry.

It is becoming increasingly difficult to find artists like Banky – with bankable image – in this present age. A growing number of artists are becoming less concerned with maintaining a decent public image, which is the reason a lot of musicians are in the practice of normalising crime through their music and celebrity prostitution is (rumoured to be) a thing in Nollywood – even if not every artist nurses political interest. However, the importance of image for artists goes beyond aspiration to public office, it extends to other career aspects including marketing and merchandising of their art.

The Banky W brand, for instance, has been proven in this regard. As far back as 2008, when endorsement deals were scarce, and almost an impossible feat for an artiste with only one popular song, Banky was named the brand ambassador of the then new Telecommunications company, Etisalat – a deal reported to have been worth N150 million. His ambassadorial ties with Samsung is another testament to the effectiveness of the Banky brand at representing such a multinational company, having consistently sustained the high-profile deal for almost a decade. Such art merchandising formula is rare amongst the new generation artists, most of whom are yet to understand the value of image in art.

Although there are no textbook rules to it, artist image – or what is often referred to as artist’s brand – is crucial to the general success of the artist. It embodies the style, personality, ethos of artists, as it aligns with their art. This forms the impression communicated to the public – consumers of arts, potential sponsors and electorates as in the case of aspirants like Banky. It is often said that a good name is worth more than gold, but for artists, a good brand is more valuable than hit singles and big movie appearances.

Music/Radio13 Songs Of 2018 That Should Have Been Hits by magazineguy(op): 6:01pm On Jan 29, 2019
2018 was a memorable year in the Nigerian music industry with chart-topping bangers, show business and live music selling out both home and abroad. The plethora of genres and artistes were able to synchronize thus making their art acceptable to Nigerian music lovers. Before now, the genre marketable in the country was restricted to Afro-pop, as the major consumers were party and club junkies. These days, Afro beats have become the norm and other genres are beginning to gain ground and cover the leftover space already occupied in the hearts of Nigerian music lovers. As Nigerian music creators brace themselves for another year to win more fans and possibly increase their community of fans, this is a list of tunes curated that were unfortunate not to grow into hits:

Yawa – Ice Prince featuring Peruzzi

Ice Prince’s failed and desperate attempts at a come-back rested on the shoulders of a new breed in Peruzzi. The Fresh VDM’s produced soft tune made Ice Prince spit some bars that brought deja vu. Peruzzi’s assisted hook was more than perfect as the instrumental bounce on and off the notes. It’s very difficult to decipher the reason behind this great tune for not blowing up.

Baba Nla – Larry Gaga featuring Burna Boy, D’Banj and 2Baba

This joint in particular is special to me in many ways: Burna Boy calling out his neighbors, the police searching for him in the alleged incident with Mr. 2kay as he confessed in the opening verse, D’Banj playing the harmonica since his Mo’hits era, 2Baba serving some life lessons. It’s still a mystery to many industry pundits and journalists as regards Larry Gaga’s deal with Universal Music Nigeria. It should be noted that ‘Baba Nla’ was a song that had the country’s finest songs men on it but still got lost in the shuffles.

Miekeraso – Duncan Mighty

On his rejuvenation and best industry story of 2018, Duncan Mighty rubbed hands and the younger generation of musical talents of Wizkid, Davido and other artistes to deliver some of the best singles of 2018. The story behind Duncan’s stir can never be complete without the Salsa-inspired tune released at the close of 2018. The Port Harcourt based songwriter, singer, sound engineer and producer showed his diversification in multiple genres once again. Sadly, the song can never match the reception ‘Fake luv’ received.

Oh Oh Lucie – Runtown

Runtown’s unending legal battles with Dilly, his former boss at Eric Many may have dented the image he portrayed in 2017. Of course, the last arrow drawn also found its way into Runtown’s chest of unique sound and music. The dancehall tune was magnificent and beautiful to the ear as the repetitive echo of ‘Oh oh oh’ exposed the bass behind the instrumentals.

Wait – Maleek Berry

Sometimes, the consciousness Maleek spreads across his music makes his fans wish he was at the top of the world. The multi-talented hit man blessed music lovers but it’s despairing to conclude that ‘Wait’ was a failed master. Remember that Maleek hooked up with Kanye West in Uganda sometimes last year with the resultant of that meeting yet to be released. Maleek is loved by fans of Nigerian Music and that level is the point they want to see their favorite.

African Woman – 1Da Banton

The South boasts of artistes who have turned compact kings in their regions. Surprisingly, his hit ‘Way Up’ still made it to the eviction night soundtrack of the Big Brother Naija 2018 reality TV show. ‘African Woman’ boasted of unusual synchs and elements in the instrumental. 1Da Banton couldn’t have more in more energy. I can only blame it on promotional strategies at Squareball.

Dumebi – Fiokee featuring Davido and Peruzzi

Talented guitarist finally engraves his name as the lead credit in a record but this is one he may not forget in a while. Despite enlisting the most sought-after names in the industry in 2018, ‘Dumebi’ failed to hit major charts on radio and popular music blogs.

Ji Masun – Idowest featuring Davido

In one of the most popular used acronyms today, ‘Ji Masun’ , the Yoruba saying which translates for ‘Stay Woke’, Idowest proved to his fans that he can be as charismatic as Olamide, Reminisce and CDQ on the streets. This indigenous rapper and one of the pioneers of the ‘Shaku shaku’ movement still has a lot to prove to his fans. Idowest, who had previously been signed to two different imprints in the past, with his DMW contract being the third contract in three years. Idowest must stay real and release credible tunes for the streets and fans in the mainstream. ‘Ji Masun’ got hassled out of the playlist even with Davido’s vocals on the heavy production.

Pempe – Sean Tizzle

Maybe Sean shouldn’t have stayed away from the scene for too long, maybe a rest shouldn’t be in the plan for Nigerian artistes after starting a fire. The case of Sean Tizzle and the epic rejection of ‘Pempe’ by Nigerian OAPs and DJs is a lesson in disguise. Obviously, Sean Tizzle’s sultry voice was not missed and the reasons behind the tune’s collapse will still be a cloudy despite cementing one of the most coveted female producers in Dunnie.

Pray – DDE featuring Teni and Phyno

Teni made her vocals onto an eastern inspired production with Phyno embracing his antics in ‘fada fada’. ‘Pray’ was predicted to be a hit in the making but few weeks after its release, that projection became shaky and eventually disappeared painfully from the roll calls of hits in 2018.

Broke boi – Victor AD, DJ Epic

Victor proved to many lovers and fans of music as the revelation of 2018, ‘Wetin we gain’ smashed walls and broke all barriers as arguably the song of the year 2018. Deep down his bin, ‘Broke boi’ stands as his most slept on record of 2018. It is not bad after all as ‘Wetin we gain’ never for once stopped playing on stereos and speakers on streets all over the country. Victor’s ability to serve motivational and inspirational records sees him sit on a tree where music has become a spiritual subject in Nigeria.

Idahams – No One Else

In the same styles that love tunes are laborious to create, the same calls for the growth and cementing proper spots on charts. ‘No one else’ depicted a young man’s hustle for love and feelings. Idahams and his Grafton Records team were hard-working to build the brand a talented singer, songwriter and producer in such a short time with potential for popularity and attention shooting up by the day.

Melanin – Afro B

Team Salut may not be your favourite squad to stalk online on social media but Afro-B has done so great in 2018 that ‘Melanin’ was not in the viral vehicle of hits that drove till the ending of 2018. Melanin boasted of a simple production with random drops of keys at intervals.

CelebritiesHow Celebrities Help With Branding by magazineguy(op): 1:15pm On Jan 25, 2019
When you think of luxury brands, one of the first things that probably comes to mind is the cost. Luxury brands are expensive: a pair of Cartier sunglasses will cost you close to a thousand dollars (and that’s one of the cheaper options). The extra cost, though, is worth it: the more money you spend, the better the product is, right?

Not necessarily. Take COACH handbags, for example: they’re a luxury brand, but when it all comes down to it, a COACH bag uses the same materials as a lesser-known brand that sells for a fraction of the cost.

In most cases, the only difference between luxury brands and ones you haven’t heard of is the way they’re marketed, or how they’re presented to the buying public. And celebrities play a big role in that presentation. Let’s look at how celebrities help turn products from unknown brands into the must-have items of the moment.

So why are people willing to pay higher prices when they can get the same product for cheaper? Because in most cases, it’s not about the product itself: it’s about pride. A psychological study found that people tend to buy higher-end products out of a sense of accomplishment or “authentic pride” — for example, someone saying “I got a raise, so I’ll treat myself.”

Once you own a luxury item, you feel a little bit better about yourself every time you use it. In fact, that same study found that most people actually don’t like showing off their luxury items to others — they just like the feeling they get from having them. That’s why somebody would wear an Armani dress shirt with their suit, even though it looks the same as a shirt they got from Macy’s. It’s not about showing off, it’s about feeling good about yourself.

Consumers also tend to think that higher costs mean higher quality. In fact, even if the luxury item is the exact same quality as the cheaper one, consumers are much more forgiving if that luxury item doesn’t work the way they thought it would.

For example, if someone buys a Honda Fit and the engine starts knocking, they’ll probably think to themselves “That’s what I get for buying a cheap car: inferior materials.” But let’s say the exact same thing happens, only this time the car is a Maserati. Suddenly, it’s not “cheap materials,” it’s “Normal wear and tear — what can you do?” Why? Because we associate cost with quality.

And this is where celebrities come in.

A celebrity’s endorsement of a product or brand sends a few different messages. The first message it sends is that this brand is better than its competitors. After all, why else would someone of that celebrity’s stature be endorsing it?

Another message it sends is that by buying this brand, you (the consumer) can be like them. Consumers tend to feel a connection with celebrities: we learn so much about them that we feel as if we know them personally. So when a celebrity makes a recommendation, we treat it almost the same way as we would if a friend or family member made it.

The third big message a celebrity endorsement sends is that brand is for people of a certain stature, not just anybody. And if consumers want to reach that higher stature, they need to buy the same products. Luxury brands offer consumers the chance to stand out from everybody else, and that’s important — consumers like to feel like they’re one-of-a-kind.

If you’re a brand owner, a celebrity endorsement can do the same for your brand. The key is to find a celebrity (or celebrities) that project the kind of image you want to be associated with your products.

Take George Clooney and Omega watches, for example. Clooney has an iconic, timeless style, the kind that fits in just as well now as it would have in the 1940s. Omega wants consumers to think of their watches the way they do George Clooney: no matter the time or place, an Omega watch is always going to look good.

While it’s true that people associate cost with quality, they also need to feel confident that they’re not spending too much for a product that won’t necessarily give them the social status they desire. The key to using celebrities to help tell your brand’s story is in finding the right celebrity. You want to get people to feel about your brand the same way they do about the celebrity representing it. You probably think of Charlize Theron as beautiful, graceful, and elegant, which is how Dior wants you to think of its products. That’s why Theron is the face of Dior.

This isn’t limited to just luxury products, either — the best celebrity fit depends on your brand and the message you’re trying to send. Mike Rowe of “Dirty Jobs” wasn’t a household name when Ford made him the face of their campaign for the F-150 which was what made him a perfect fit. Rowe’s straightforward persona spoke to Ford’s target audience: the kind of consumer who just wants a solid, dependable truck without the flash and the gimmicks.

The celebrity you choose is up to you, but finding a good fit means figuring out how you want people to think of your brand and who the right celebrity is to help you communicate that message. That’s why celebrities are so valuable to brands: their endorsement says more about the quality of your products and your brand than you ever could on your own.

Music/RadioWhy Artists Need To Rethink Leaving Their Manager by magazineguy(op): 10:02am On Jan 15, 2019
With “True Life Story of an Artiste Manager 1: Lesson to all aspiring Talent Managers”, King Wale Applause might have published the most jarring piece on the life of an artist manager in the Nigerian music industry – the sacrificial nature of the job and the risk of being denied due reward.

Drawing from his experience of managing the career of Lil Kesh, he shared a word of advice for artists on how to treat managers, particularly the manager whose effort contributed to the early success of the artist. He wrote, “you see the thing about that manager that helped you ‘blow’ like we call it, NEVER EVER LET HIM GO IF YOU ARE NOT DOUBLE SURE OF A REPLACEMENT.”

Indeed, events of artist and manager splits almost always tell on the careers of such artists – Wale suggested that Lil Kesh has been struggling to hit it right since his sack. The truth is: choosing managers could go either way – it could be the start of struggles, on the other hand, it could mean a new lease of life for the artist.

Choosing who to run the business side of one’s music means trusting such a person with contract negotiations; events finding and bookings; securing venues that match one’s career strategy; advising on career decisions; publicity and promotion; helping in making career decisions such as which record producer to work with, or which songs to perform; and managing media relations on the artist’s behalf.

Davido summed it up in his tweet – announcing his split from Kamal Ajiboye – that selecting a manager pretty much means trusting one’s life, as an artist, in the hands of that person. He wrote, “I’m my own manager 2017!! Don’t put your life for another man’s hand.” With Kamal, Davido’s career sailed on the wave of the globalisation of Afrobeats, as he sought to penetrate into major foreign music markets like the U.K. and the US.

While the direction seemed to be yielding results from the business angle, having led to a huge international deal with Sony Music Africa, the music was not reaching the heights David expected. “I knew myself. I was like, ‘this is not Davido’. My career has always been on fire at all times, [‘till then] there was never a time that I didn’t have a hit out, and that time I didn’t have a hit”, he confessed to Toye Sokunbi of Native Magazine.

For an artist to meet an elusive career desire, it might require finding a manager who knows the route. For Davido, Asa Asika is that manager who knows the workings to turn his music into hit records – “IF”, “Fall” and many other big songs have been recorded since then. 2Baba has that in Efe Omorogbe, CEO of Now Muzik – a relationship that has grown past a decade. Efe admitted that there was a time of “misalignment” between the two, when Now Muzik had a clear vision for 2Baba’s career and the artist wanted a “slightly” different direction for himself. This led to a two year split, before both parties agreed to work together again.

With an understanding of the make or mar influence of a manager on the career of an artist, it is easy to see Wale Applause’s point, that forward-thinking artists do not switch managers for the fun of it. If the relationship is not unproductive and it is not broken, splitting from a manager should be given extra thought. An artist-manager relationship is very famously compared with marriage because, ideally, it is a relationship of shared interest. However, should there be a case of split or switch, the result is often determined by the motive behind the decision.

Music/RadioWill The Industry Stop Sleeping On Bella Alubo Now? by magazineguy(op): 11:46am On Dec 05, 2018
Surfing twitter is my best social media habit. Most of my time online is spent on going through my timeline for tweets to munch, retweet or reply. If I am not doing any of those, I am reading linked articles of interest. I was in my usual twitter surfing habit sometime around mid-October when I came across a friend’s tweet: “Join the #ReBellaz movement ”, with the image of someone I recognise attached to the tweet: Bella Alubo!

I met Bella in 2017, for an interview, during which she discussed her preparedness to take her music to new heights, having just signed a record deal at the time. I ran into her recently, at Osagie’s office, where we had a chat – a lively one – which morphed into a mini-interview. Since 2017, a lot has changed about Bella: she now has a mainstream collaborative EP to her name, she has got a Nigerian Entertainment Awards (NEA) nomination, she has become one of the industry’s few consistent feminist figures, and she is now associated with a movement – ReBellaz. All these we discussed during our recent chat.

“Late Night Vibrations” – the duet EP of YCEE & Bella Alubo – was one of the earliest music projects of 2018 to arrive. The 6-track EP has been described as the manifestation of the potential of the two rappers to embrace their pop sides. It feels, to me, like a proper meal of a piece I took a bite on, on “Radio.” Bella, particularly, seem to have poured a lot of passion into her verses. She left me impressed with her communication of the sombreness of self-doubt, resulting from loving a guy who is not against the idea of love, but prefers the freedom of noncommittal affairs.

Some people have suggested that the chemistry exhibited between the two, on the EP, couldn’t have been completely made up: that they either had or still have some sort of romantic connection. Bella laughed it off when I mentioned it. “I have never been romantically involved with YCEE”, she said. Her delivery on the EP led to the NEA nomination, for “Most Promising Act.” The impact of the EP has brought her fulfilment. “It helped me define my sound and it helped me showcase the different things I can do with my talent. It helped me show how much I have grown”, Bella revealed.

The release of the EP was like sunrise for Bella; 2018 was a whole day for her to work (make music), but she has not offered much since the EP. Bella admitted to this when she talked about her new direction. “Because I haven’t released music since January, the plan, at first, was to put out a single. In fact we had selected the song to be released, then I recorded another one. Then I recorded more, so my manager (Osagie) suggested that we make an EP.” The new EP is to be called “ReBella”, while her fans would be called “ReBellaz” – a combination of “Rebel” and “Bella.”

“It is about reinvention for me. It is a showcase of what Bella has become”, she said, explaining the concept behind the EP. Since her aspiration to mainstream success led her from Jos to Lagos, Bella has grown her network of industry friends, she has picked up new music techniques and her general understanding of the workings of the industry has improved. She tells me, “there are songwriting tips I have picked up from people like YCEE. People on the radio, like Wizkid, like Tiwa.” “Things like melodies, things like using catchy words, things like adding bridges that people would remember, so it is not just the hook, are essentials in making a good song.”

The ReBellaz EP is Bella’s way of showing the beauty of her artistic evolution. She spoke of the project with the confidence of a student who is expecting an A from a test. “The EP is a compilation of 7 mad songs”, she told me. Every aspect of the project is hinged upon a strategic idea: the intro is a self-praise material with testament from a credible voice, the featured artistes are picked from different regions of the continent and female representation is favoured, the choice of producers is a near-balance between familiar hands and new associations.

“I chose it (“Ask Bolaji”) as the intro because it is something like a co-sign. I am hyping myself, saying ‘I am dope’ on the song and saying ‘oh ask BOJ’” There are other contributions from Victoria Kimani, Efya, and Sho Madjozi of South Africa, on the EP. “I knew I just wanted to feature a lot of women to show that it is not just by mouth”, she said, confirming that her choice of guest artistes has a tone of feminism in it.

A while ago, Bella caused a stir on the Internet with her tweet about female disadvantage in the industry. When I brought up the topic, she reiterated her point that female representation, in the industry, is low. Truly, there aren’t many females in the industry’s upper echelons and the ones on the come-up do not get the right support. “There are times when I have reached out to male artistes and they don’t want to hang (out) with me based on my artistry. They are interested in other things other than music,” Bella said. “How can this issue of female representation be fixed”, I asked. She told me, “I want to see more successful male artistes collaborate with many, not just one, female artiste.”

“Honey” is one of the new EP’s constituent songs, which Bella really hyped. She called it the “turn-up song” of the project, saying Sho Madjozi infused the South African energy into the music to compliment her soft-sultry singing. The story behind “Aiya” is one I particularly find exciting. “The first person I like in Lagos inspired that song. Things didn’t go well. So a lot of emotion went into recording that song,” she revealed. For production, Bella relied on her chemistry with Syn X – the producer of “Radio” – and Quebeat, who she described as “family”. Remy Baggins’ skill with creating sounds that combine foreign feel with Nigerian flavour, was brought in on two of the tracks on “ReBellaz” and Tempoe made a Late Night Vibrations-esque record with Bella and Efya.

Commonly, artistes measure the success of their project by the number of sales. Some look at the impact on the size and diversity of their fanbase. Some aim to establish their identity, or a unique sound. For Bella, she is looking at all these factors to judge the success of her forthcoming EP. She is however particular about the numbers of digital sales. “I think the signs in the music industry are numbers. If anyone wants to get you on shows or endorsements, they look at the numbers. You know the digital market has grown and that is one area of focus for me.”

Music/Radio5 Artistes The Internet Has Produced (for The Industry) by magazineguy(op): 11:53am On Dec 03, 2018
The internet is increasingly becoming an integral part of music business around the world. Not only is it a platform for consumers to access music materials, it also allows creators get their art to be heard and seen. In the right hands, the internet, particularly Instagram and Twitter, can be portals to fame and fortune. Here is a list of 5 artistes who have used the internet as a portal to fame:

Mayorkun

https://i2.wp.com/tushmagazine.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/mayorkun-1.jpg?resize=300%2C234

He is now an established pop star with a befitting title: “The Mayor of Lagos.” Before his big break in 2016, the acclaimed singer was a young man with a flair for music, holed up in the banking sector. He recorded a video of himself making a cover to Davido and Olamide’s duet: “The Money.” Davido picked up interest in the video and it developed into a record deal for Mayorkun who seized the chance to actualise his dreams.

Teni

https://i0.wp.com/tushmagazine.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/TENI-THE-ENTERTAINER-1.jpg?resize=300%2C300

Her success story is a testament to the power of the internet in helping an artiste find an audience. Under Shizzi’s Magic Finger Records she started with posting freestyle videos and skits on Instagram. And around late 2016, one of her videos spread across the platform like wildfire, making her an Internet sensation and earning her a chance to switch to Dr. Dolor Entertainment where she has grown to become a big deal in industry. Interestingly, she continually uses her social media platforms to reach lovers of her art. She is a gift of the internet to the music industry.

Picazo Rhap

https://i0.wp.com/tushmagazine.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/A-Must-See-5-Things-You-Need-To-Know-About-YBNLs-New-Signing-Picazo-Rhap.jpg?resize=300%2C238

The YBNL new signee is another success story of the internet. He partook in the Instagram challenge of Chinko Ekun’s street-pop anthem, Able Gold, and his impressive rap skill caused his video to go viral. The rave translated into a record deal with one of the country’s biggest labels, boosting his profile in the process and making a talent to watch in the future.

Zamorra

https://i0.wp.com/tushmagazine.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/zamosings.jpg?resize=240%2C300

The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) graduate attracted some attention to himself with his creative covers; but it is the viral success of one of his recent “importanter” video, which brought him to the industry’s focus. He then released an official version that was welcomed by the public. Since the trend, Zamo Sings now walks in industry circles as one of the stars on the rise.

Temi Ovwasa (YBNL Princess)

https://i2.wp.com/tushmagazine.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/temi-ovwasa.jpg?resize=300%2C200

Olamide himself was the scout who found Temi on Instagram. She recounted the story in an interview in 2017. “I used to sing and record covers of different songs, which I post on Instagram. In August last year (2016), I uploaded a particular video of a song and realised that Olamide had liked all my videos”, she said. The interest led to her getting signed and made her the YBNL princess whose announcement shook the industry.

The internet still offers opportunities to artistes. There are potential investors like Olamide and Dr. Dolor lurking around the streets of the internet looking for prospects; and millions of fans out there who would appreciate brilliant works of art if it is shown to them.

https://i0.wp.com/tushmagazine.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Nike3.jpg?resize=225%2C300

With 4 Art Galleries around Nigeria, Mrs. Nike Okundaye is the undisputed master of the gallery world in Nigeria.

You can’t miss the outstanding art inspired architecture of the 3 story building on arrival and with the Lagos gallery being about 10years old, it houses an extensive collection of Art pieces by over 50 Artists. Nike Art Gallery represents only Nigerian Artists and most pieces seen in the gallery tell stories of various Nigerian culture. Visit the gallery and you may be in luck and meet the owner like I did, she always has plenty of stories to tell.

Red Door Art Gallery

https://i1.wp.com/tushmagazine.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Red-Door-2.jpg?resize=225%2C300

This 5 years-old contemporary gallery is a quiet space. The gallery houses a collection of paintings and installations from outstanding Artists like Nengi Omuku, Oma, Adewale and Peju Alatise. The Gallery is also open to hosting specific cocktail events that are in line with the goals of the space.

Art Twenty One

https://i0.wp.com/tushmagazine.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Art-twenty-One4.jpg?resize=225%2C300

The Art twenty one gallery’s simple and clean design, combined the vastness of the space gives it an impeccable ambiance.

The exhibition “Layers of Time and Place: What Lies Beneath” by Abraham Oghobase, an artistic interpretation of the Artist’s first visit to Jos Nigeria, was on display during my visit.

This 600sqm open space makes it unique amongst other Art Galleries in Lagos, and it is also often used as a space for hosting events.

Rele Gallery

https://i2.wp.com/tushmagazine.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Rele1.jpg?resize=225%2C300

The term cutting-edge doesn’t have much meaning anymore, but if there was any gallery out there that you could say was still pushing the envelope, it would be Rele Gallery.

During my visit, the first thing I experienced walking into Rele Gallery was an ambience that was unusually relaxing, as a result of the music playing, which was a part of the exhibition on display – “Interactions”.

Interactions, which was aimed to offer a fresh perspective on how art can be perceived and engaged with, consisted of installations addressing pertinent contemporary issues of migration, urban development and globalization by the Artists – Obinna Okerekeocha, Patrick Apkojotor and May Okafor.

Thought Pyramid Art Center

https://i0.wp.com/tushmagazine.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Thought-4.jpg?resize=259%2C300

Another Gallery with architecture that reflects art and creativity, welcomed into Lagos only in 2017 but already houses a remarkable collection of art pieces from various talented Nigerian and African Artists.

I visited the Gallery on the opening day of the exhibition “October Rain 2018”, a group exhibition by artists under the umbrella body of SNA, Lagos chapter.

One unique feature the gallery possesses is the idea of publishing a catalogue for every exhibition and having them sold within the gallery, for visitors to view past installations that may no longer be available for viewing at the time of visit.

Music/RadioMeet Nigeria's Only Female Producer Who Produced Sean Tizzle's Pempe by magazineguy(op): 1:49pm On Nov 23, 2018
The music industry is often spoken of as a male dominated arena, mostly because of the ratio of males to females in the leading positions of the different arms of the industry. The obvious areas are: the class of artists and artist managers; but in the less obvious fields like the field of producers, the gap between males to females is even more alarming – while there are leagues of male producers, Nigerian female producers, like Dunnie, are rare.

Dunnie handled the vocal and beat production of Sean Tizzle’s party-popular single titled “Pempe.” She is a skilled instrumentalist who learnt to play the drum, the guitar and the piano in her family church in Ibadan. Her music production career is an offshoot of her career as an Afro-fusion musician. She talks of the experience of being a unicorn in the field as “bitter sweet.” But she acknowledged its benefits saying, “I would say I have an edge as a producer than as a singer.”

She knew Black Jerzey from her time in Abuja, so she linked up with him when she got to Lagos. She played some of her beats for him to “critique.” It was during one of those sessions that Sean Tizzle heard her play what would become the “Pempe” beat and showed interest. “I was playing the beat and Tizzle walked in. He liked it. Initially he thought it was Jerzey’s beat but I said ‘I own the beat’. He recorded it (Pempe) and it happened.” She describes the incident as “being in the right place at the right time and being ready with beats.”

Health5 Ways To Avoid Razor Bumps by magazineguy(op): 10:25am On Nov 23, 2018
This is one embarrassing thing that men struggle with in their day to day lives, nevertheless they must do all they can to get a smooth clear skin. Razor bumps are bumpy skin inflammation that appear on the face of a man. Razor bumps can be avoided and taken care of with proper products and technique. I am sure you do not want to be seen around with a bumpy face because that is not cute in anyway. Here are 5 ways to avoid getting those bumps:

USING BLUNT RAZOR

This cannot be overemphasized. Old and bad razors should be thrown into the bin as they have no place on your face. The use of razor that is blunt and old causes infection, and shaves the facial hair on the surface, the razor does not go down properly for a good shave, thereby causing bumps.

REACTION TO SHAVING CREAMS

It is wise to know what best works for you and the shaving cream that best suits your skin. Shaving creams can irritate the skin, thereby causing rash and bumps.

NOT USING AFTER SHAVE

After shave exists for a reason and is in no way a luxury. After shave can be in form of oil or lotion but is very essential in preventing razor bumps and irritation. It is advisable for men to invest in an after shave kit and use them appropriately.

DO NOT SHAVE TOO OFTEN

Some men are guilty of shaving so often that they injure their skin. It is better to shave once in a while, especially when the hair on the face is fully grown.

USE CLEAN CLOTH TO WIPE THAT AREA

Hygiene is paramount when it comes to shaving your beards as when done and washed, clean cloth must be used to wipe dry. If a dirty cloth is used, dirt is just being transferred to the skin and can hide under the skin. Prevention is definitely better than cure.

HealthIs Medical Marijuana Just A Leverage To Legalize Marijuana In General? by magazineguy(op): 4:48pm On Nov 20, 2018
There are few subjects that can evoke mixed emotions among doctors, scientists, researchers, policy makers, and the public than medical marijuana. Should it be legalized? Has its effectiveness been proven? What conditions is it useful for? How can they keep it out of the hands of teenagers? Is it really the “omnipotent drug” that people claim it is? Is medical marijuana just a leverage to legalize marijuana in general?

Marijuana is currently legal, on the state level, in 29 states, and in Washington, DC, in the United States of America. It is still illegal from the Donald Trump’s perspective. The Obama administration did not even try to make prosecution of medical marijuana a minor priority. President Donald Trump promised not to meddle in the affairs of people using medical marijuana, though his administration is currently threatening to reverse this policy. About 85% of Americans support the use of medical marijuana, and it is estimated that several million Americans currently use it.

Marijuana without the ‘high’

Least controversial is the extract from the hemp plant referred as CBD (cannabidiol) because this compound of marijuana has little intoxicating properties. Marijuana in its full form has more than 100 active compounds. THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the chemical that causes the intoxication that goes hand-in-hand with marijuana use. CBD-dominant strains have mild or no THC, so patients report rarely if they feel any change in consciousness.

However, patients report many boons of CBD, from relieving insomnia, spasticity, anxiety, distress and pain to treating life-threatening conditions, for example epilepsy. A particular form of childhood epilepsy called Dravet syndrome is almost difficult to control, but responds significantly to a CBD-dominant strain of marijuana known as Charlotte’s Web.

Uses of medical marijuana

The most common use for medical marijuana in the U.S is for pain control. Surprisingly, marijuana is not strong enough for severe pain (for instance, post-surgical pain or a broken bone), but it is quite effective for the chronic pain that affect millions of Americans, especially gerontic patients. A portion of its attraction is that it is undoubtedly safer than opiates and it can take the place of NSAIDs such as Advil, if people can’t use them because of problems with their kidneys or ulcers.

In particular, marijuana appears to reduce the pain of multiple sclerosis, and nerve pain. This is an area where few other options belong, and those that do, such as Neurontin, Lyrica, or opiates are highly sedating. Patients report that marijuana allows them to resume their previous activities without a feeling of disengagement.

Furthermore, Marijuana is known to be a fantastic muscle relaxant, and people testify of its ability to subdue tremors in Parkinson’s disease. Recently, its use was quite successfully for fibromyalgia, endometriosis, interstitial cystitis and other conditions where the final common pathway is chronic pain.

Marijuana is also used to control nausea, motion sickness and weight loss; it can be used to treat glaucoma. Medical marijuana was also reported to have helped patients suffering from pain and wasting syndrome related to HIV, in addition to irritable bowel syndrome and Crohn’s disease.

Recently, Marijuana consumption was passed into bill in South Africa, limited only to indoor and relaxation purposes.

HealthNew Study Shows How Dogs Can Save You From Dying by magazineguy(op): 2:53pm On Nov 07, 2018
A new study suggests that dog lovers are 23% less likely to suffer from heart disease(s).

Dogs are really cute and are our best friends when given the necessary training and attention. A study of 3.4 million people using the demography of the ages 40 – 80 found that having a dog was related with a 23% reduction from heart disease and a 20% risk of dying. Past studies also suggested dogs ease social isolation and depression

HOW POSSIBLE?

People that own dogs show respond better to stress, have increased levels of physical activity and slightly decreased cholesterol levels of cholesterol. The American Heart Association was significantly influenced by dozens of studies to release a statement saying that owning a dog was associated with a reduced outcome of cardiovascular disease. Their hesitancy to strongly endorse dog ownership was due to the larger volumes of studies being done – are what is called observational. Researchers noted an association but couldn’t decipher the thin line between that and causation. This means that there could be other factors which explain why dog owners are healthier than, say, cat owners.

An epidemiologist and lead researcher, Tove Fall, says they used many factors and differences in education, existing health conditions and lifestyle changes between those who own and do not own dogs. The study found the largest positive impact of owning a dog was on lonely and single folks and that extends to people living alone in their apartments and residences. Practically, dogs encourage their owners to take walks, provides social and emotional and make life more worth living. Whatever time and situation one is in, the dog gives you that motivation to go back home. I should dabble in a reversal of Colin Kaepernick’s words, as used in his famous ad with Nike: ‘Don’t leave your child with your pit bull terrier alone at home. Just DON’T do it’.

Fashion4 Reasons Why Henna Is One Of The Most Sought After Fashion Accessory by magazineguy(op): 11:29am On Nov 02, 2018
So many people around the world are hooked on this especially for going out every day, unlike how it was being used when preparing the brides for their wedding ceremony or any major ceremony in the north. It is also known as Mehndi, a form of body art from Ancient India, sub continental, Africa and the Middle east, in which decorative designs are done on the body using a paste created from the powdered dry leaves of the henna plant. It was originally for women’s palms alone, but later men started wearing it.

The design depicts awakening of inner light and a representation of the sun, which is traditionally better worn on either the hands or feet. Different African sectors who engage in this design have their own style of doing it. The colour of the henna is usually brown, but there are some rare colours like White and Gold, which people use.

The Indian cinema and entertainment industry which includes Nepal, Bangladesh and Maldives embraced this trend. Mehndi decorations became fashionable in the West in the late 1990’s, where they are called henna tattoos. In Nigeria it is very common among the Hausa people. Other tribes now wear it as a fashion accessory, in fact prefer it to the tattoo, bearing in mind that it isn’t permanent and can be changed. In recent times people get excited over it as added beauty accessory and sales of the service has gone up. These are the reasons why:

BEAUTIFICATION

Henna design is seen as one to beautify the skin and inscribe your favourite design on. It is very attractive and good to look at.

MAKES ONE LOOK TRENDY

It was seen as wedding design for Hausa brides, but now ladies do it to look trendy and beautiful, as it takes a look from a 0 to a 100 because it depicts a very fashionable person.

CULTURAL REPRESENTATION

Most Nigerians want their culture to be represented in that light. Ladies who do it have come to the realisation that it is uniquely made for the Africans and depicts rich culture.

FASHION FORWARD

People bring forward what they want to see trend. Henna is classy, tasteful and beautiful. Most ladies want to be a part of that.

Music/Radio5 Exciting Music Talents You’re Sure To Love by magazineguy(op): 3:37pm On Oct 31, 2018
Everywhere in the country, you’d find music talents. It is impossible to pay attention to all of them, not even if you are a talent scout. If you are just looking for new music or an appealing new artiste, the mainstream is usually the first stop shop; but behind the glare, you’d often find brilliant artists who make fine music. These artistes are typically young and budding talents learning to hone their creative skill as they strive to find their rhythm in the system.

Coming in contact with such artistes at their formative stage could spark off a truly beautiful experience of fandom that would remain as lores to future fans. For instance, following Wizkid from the days of “Fast Money Fast Cars” to this point of global fame – his new fans can only read about the early days and imagine what it was like. Or like being an M.I fan from the time of “Talk About It” and comparing it to the experience of those who learnt about his music in more recent times – both experiences shouldn’t even be compared.

There’s a stronger bond between artistes and their day-one fans – the ones who have followed them from their most basic level to their zenith. Such fans are part of the tale of success. That’s why it feels like a privilege to discover a talent early and watch them become stars. Here’s a list of rising talents whose music is worth following at the nascent stage:

Waye

https://i1.wp.com/tushmagazine.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Waye-2.jpg?resize=300%2C300

The young and talented Miss Waye is an Afro-fusion artiste who is currently enjoying the fruits of her efforts in the field of self-discovery. She started music in her teens, following a path that appeared to freely expressive and adventitious but after a long hiatus she returned looking more interested in plying a path with design and purpose. She comes with a defined style of music and her artistic maturity is evident on her comeback release titled “Your Love”, which has placed her before the eyes of the seers of the industry.

Mimido

https://i2.wp.com/tushmagazine.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/JhAMzyhx_400x400.jpg?resize=300%2C300

Folklore music has a characteristic deep and soulful feel. These elements give essence to the music of Mimido – a Project Fame alumnae who has chosen the outlying way of the likes of Asa and Brymo. His John Legend-like vocal has its own special effect and the grace in his compositions helps them warm the heart. His primitive song, “Prodigal Song”, is a beautiful product of tale-telling, whose theme is similar to that of the biblical story. “Aaye” shows his readiness for more advanced composition assignments like moving soundtracks for movies or documentaries.

Bode Blaq

https://i2.wp.com/tushmagazine.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/DSC1053.jpg?resize=200%2C300

Since Falz showed how rap music can be “democratised” without losing its essence, another act who is just as convincing with his unique style of rap is Bode Blaq. The dark and fashionable artiste makes coltish rap music with his signature baritone voice that likens him to Black Magic. His anthem titled “Balu” is a parlance for an ignorant loser. It is just the kind of word that grows to become popular on the street, just like Olamide’s “Science Student.” Bode’s music is complimented by his bubbly character that sees him post tease and engage his followers with teasing IG videos.

Juju Boy Star

https://i0.wp.com/tushmagazine.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/jujuboy-Star.jpg?resize=300%2C300

This Nigerian pop talent reminds me of the young Wizkid with the endless and effortless melodies he rolls out. His IG page (@jujuboystar), is littered with videos of himself and his fans vibing to his lovely tunes. His “Gimme Love” single is a song you can’t help but love if you’re a fan of Afro-pop music. The industry figures have started to cast their gaze on him, with the likes of MI Abaga, Reekado Banks watching him closely on IG. He recently shared picture of his meeting with Rudeboy and the word spreading around is that he is one of the “next in line”.

Teeban

https://i2.wp.com/tushmagazine.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/teeban2.jpg?resize=300%2C161

Talents like 9ice are one-in-a-generation talent – the kind of talent that infuses the right amount of cultural elements into their music and blends it with trendy sounds that ensures the pop audience would love it. Teeban is such rare talent. His single, “Loke Loke” is a Yoruba traditional music classic like 9ice’s “Gongo Aso”. Stumbling upon this song on the radio, led to the search for his other materials and this search led to an amazing revelation of his interesting singles and impressive features. The only reason you’re not a fan yet, is because you haven’t listened to his music yet.

Fashion5 Reasons Why A Man Should Get A Facial Treatment by magazineguy(op): 10:37am On Oct 25, 2018
Facials are indeed not for the ladies alone as men have joined the band wagon. It is not too feminine to get a facial, as it is a necessity rather than a luxury. Some men have oily skin, suffer breakouts, shaving bumps, premature aging, blackheads and whiteheads, so what other way to get them out than a relaxing and deep cleansing facials.

Facials are work out for the face. The theory that facials are done only if you have breakouts or a rough skin should be disregarded. Everyone needs this beauty treatment, because trust me there are one thousand and one things your aesthetician can discover about your skin under the lights. Facials is diagnosing your skin, in order to treat your skin concerns. For men that want to look clean, fresh and look the part in their business endeavours, carry on reading. Here are 5 reasons you should get a facial as a man.

HEALS SHAVING BUMPS AND SPOTS

Men tend to have bumps from shaving. Facial treatment tends to get rid of bumps and spots through facial steaming, extractions and variety of spot treatments. Thorough deep pore cleansing is being done to treat this problem.

SMOOTH AND SOFTER SKIN

Men’s skin tends to be hard and tough. Facial treatment helps smoothen and keep it soft. For men that think they do not need a facial treatment, look at how tough your skin is and how unattractive you may be to the ladies then think again.

PROMOTES YOUTHFUL GLOW

This applies to women as well, environmental pollution, stress, diet and lifestyle can make our skin get all messy. What other way to recover than a soothing facial. That glows the skin and at the same time treat skin problems.

REDUCE VISIBLE OIL FROM THE SKIN

Facial treatment tend to reduce the oil that comes out from the skin, especially for men since they produce more oil due to their testosterone level. After the deep pore cleansing, a mud mask is used to draw out unwanted oils from the skin, leaving the skin healthy and very manageable.

RELIEVES STRESS

Men tend to over stress themselves, working and fending for the family with little or no skin care regime. What better way to take care of the skin and relax other than going for a facial treatment at least once a month. It will do the men a lot of good to relax their facial muscles from time to time, in order to prevent early signs of aging and look very bright and handsome.

Fashion5 Tie Colours That Can Enhance A Man’s Suit by magazineguy(op): 11:35am On Oct 23, 2018
What an exquisite way to add colour to your outfit. A tie is one fashion accessory that can enhance a man’s outfit. It is important for a man to know how to combine a tie with their outfit. Ties can be plain or have patterns, straight or be in bow form. However it may be, a man with a tie is a confident man. Ties are mostly worn to the office, corporate events, dinners or wedding. Tie is a staple piece that has been around for a while but how you wear it makes all the difference.

There are some certain colours of ties that are daring and make a man’s suit stand out. If you want to be that classy man that everyone wants to dress like, look below for 6 tie colours that can enhance a man’s suit.

RED

https://i0.wp.com/tushmagazine.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/red.png?resize=239%2C300

This is one tie that we cannot get enough of; it is classy, catchy and eye popping. It can be worn preferably with black brown or any neutral suit. If you want your outfit to pop, the red-tie is your best bet.

PINK

https://i1.wp.com/tushmagazine.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/pink.png?resize=300%2C288

Contrary to people’s believe that pink is only for women, which is not entirely true as daring men wear pink. Baby pink wouldn’t be the best option for men that are afraid to explore, but dark pink is your go to any day. Dark pink is trendy, classy and tasteful. Gone are those days when every man out there either wears a brown or a black tie. The jinx has been broken as men are exploring more in fashion.

PATTERNED (MIXED COLOUR)

https://i1.wp.com/tushmagazine.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/pattern.jpg?resize=200%2C300

This is a beautiful way to bring out the beauty in your suit. Imagine a neutral suit and you really want to look fashionable or stand out at an event, just grab a tie with mixed colours and you are good to go. Bear in mind that if you are going to wear a patterned-tie, do not wear a patterned suit, it is an offence to the fashion world and very distasteful .

YELLOW

https://i1.wp.com/tushmagazine.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/yellow.png?w=283

The yellow-tie is significant and can be mostly worn to dinners and evening outings but if you are confident, you can wear it to work. The idea is to stand out and be stylish. You can also go for a more mellow type of yellow for the office.

GREEN

https://i0.wp.com/tushmagazine.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/green.jpg?resize=300%2C300

This is a very uncommon colour but you can be the first to pull this off. The idea is not to follow trend but to create one. The colour green is beautiful, although it is advisable to look out for the shade that matches your colour, be creative and blend wisely. This colour will no doubt bring out the best in your suit, hence, are you daring enough to carry it? Fashion is getting better every day and so should your taste in style.

Health5 Reasons Why Water Is A Major Beauty Secret by magazineguy(op): 10:35am On Oct 19, 2018
Not everybody likes the sound of water but I tell you that not all things you don’t like are bad for you. Look at the brighter side and what it has to offer you. Our bodies contain mostly water and blood, of course it is only natural to refuel from time to time and stay hydrated so as to avoid sickness, tiredness and dry skin. It is important to drink at most 8 glasses a day. If you can do more grease to your elbow but remember, too much of everything is bad.

Some people prefer taking sodas and fizzy drinks which is bad for the overall health and body system. If you would like to take a break from water, you can put lemon in your water for taste or simply blend your fruits and drink, as this is safer for your health and wellbeing. Water does an array of things especially the glowing skin so many young ladies crave for. So many ladies buy all sorts of products which are important, but will be futile if you do not cleanse the inside of your body. Music/RadioWatch Aramide's New Video With Timaya In Response To Comedian Ebiye by magazineguy(op): 10:21am On Oct 16, 2018
'Fall On Them' is Aramide’s second song since her Headies win where the single, 'FunMi Lowo' won the Best Alternative Song award.

The song is subtly directed to comedian Ebiye who made awful remark about her winning the award.

It took quite a while for her to react but it is definitely worth the wait and her response was superb.

Music/RadioNigeria’s Ringback Tones Revenue To Hit $65m By 2022 – Pwc by magazineguy(op): 9:53am On Oct 11, 2018
According to a new PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) report, Nigeria’s music industry’s economy will continue to grow till 2022.

This growth will be propelled and sustained by the increasing reliance on mobile devices by music consumers, thereby increasing the power of the country’s telecom establishments.

“Digital music revenue overtook physical music revenue as far back as 2013, but mobile formats – essentially, caller ringback tones (RBTs) – account for virtually all of digital revenue,” the report says. “It is therefore a music industry dominated by mobile telecom operators, which also own some of the country’s biggest streaming and downloading full-track services.”

The nature of RBTs imparts a resistance to piracy unseen in most other music formats. Nonetheless, the scheme favours artists who have already recorded and released hits, as the telcos pocket a significant percentage of the revenue per unit. Artists with smaller fan bases are unlikely to earn substantial amounts.

The report forecasts revenue of $65m for the Nigerian music industry in 2022, a considerable rise from last year’s $35m. But despite digital music’s heavy contribution to this figure, streaming is still not a major source of revenue for the Nigerian music industry. This is because of poor Internet penetration. The reliance on ringback tones is unchanged from the PwC report of last year when it was reported that ringback tones had “become a big social phenomenon among Nigerians”.

Nigeria’s relationship with ringback tones is similar to Kenya’s, but unlike South Africa’s, which will see increased demand in streaming. “As in the world’s developed markets, demand for digital music-streaming subscription services is strong [in South Africa], with revenue from the [streaming] segment in 2017 up by 76.3% on the previous year.”

The difference in revenue streams between the music industry’s in these countries is intensified by the minuscule contribution of ringback tones to the South African music economy.

“Ringtones and ringback tones music revenue is set to account for just over 1% of digital recorded music revenues in South Africa in 2022, down from 38% in 2013 as streaming revenues take centre stage,” PwC says.

“By contrast, ringtones and ringback tones revenue will still account for over 99% of digital revenues in both Nigeria and Kenya as both countries are underserved by major streaming platforms, and low fixed broadband penetration has historically prevented the development of the digital download industry.”

The presence of Swedish company Spotify in South Africa is a major boost for the country’s streaming revenue. And while the company is reportedly set to open shop in North Africa in November, no plans have been announced for West Africa, where local players like Boomplay and MTN’s Music+ control a healthy slice of the market.

All three countries are however united in one regard: by 2022, the music industries in each would grow substantially compared to their value in 2018.

Health5 Reasons Why Body Scrub Treatment Is A Number One Beauty Regimen by magazineguy(op): 10:38am On Oct 02, 2018
There is always an exciting feeling that comes with getting your skin polished, cleaned and buffed; it is called rejuvenation. Body scrub has been practiced for a long time using local remedies according to one’s culture and tradition or even preference. The Indians and Asians particularly love this treatment when getting their brides ready for their marriage ceremony. It is also common in Hausa culture here in Nigeria, when preparing the bride for their big day.

The treatment is a process that involves exfoliating the skin using an abrasive ingredient to buff and polish the skin. A major ingredient used are usually sugar and salt mixed with other ingredients, depending on what the client wants and skin specifications. It can be done as often as you want it done, people who are very meticulous about their skin prefer to do it once a month in a spa, which normally involves steaming the body in a sauna. It can also be bought and used at home during one’s spare time. For people who want to know more about body scrub, these are 5 reasons why you should be interested;

LIGHTENS SKIN NATURALLY

Bleaching and toning heavily is not the answer to beautiful skin. However, if you want to take off dirt and brighten your skin or even give an even complexion and take off dark marks, your answer is body scrub. Body scrub lightens the skin naturally by exfoliating dead skin, giving the skin a beautiful and brighter complexion.

SMOOTH AND SILKY

What better way to achieve smooth and silky skin other than by scrubbing your body with a body scrub. It is usually abrasive, but in turn gives a smooth finish after the whole process.

REMOVES UNWANTED HAIR FROM THE SKIN

You heard that right. The treatment removes unwanted hair from the skin. Body scrub treatments like Hammam which is an ancient Asian body scrub treatment, aside removing dirt from the skin removes hair too.

REMOVES PIMPLE

Body scrub has been known to take off pimple from the body especially when done with body steaming, thereby making the pimple soft enough to go off after scrubbing.

REDUCES BODY ACNE

Body acne cannot be totally cured but reduced with body scrub treatment. People with acne are advised to go for professional scrub treatment or use a body scrub at home to clear surface dirt and reduce the acne.

Health5 False Beliefs About Acne by magazineguy(op): 5:59pm On Sep 27, 2018
Acne has been known to be one of the greatest skin problems in the world. It can be caused by over production of oil in the oil gland, puberty process, and oily skin, not cleansing the skin regularly, certain foods and not using the right products for your skin. Some people believe it is caused by certain things or way of life which is not true. It is also important to consult a dermatologist before doing self-medication, as the curse might be different from the next person. There are some false beliefs and there are:

It is caused by poor hygiene

This is false as acne and hygiene is not relatable. That a person looks unkempt does not in any way give acne, so people should not get it twisted and try to know the source of the problem before blaming it on looks. Acne starts from inside the pores and not a surface thing, one needs to treat acne from the inside by taking certain medication and using the right product.

It is caused by candy and fried food

This might not be entirely a lie because for some people certain foods trigger their acne that is not to say that eating fried food can cause acne. Moderation is key to whatever kind of food you put in your body. Foods containing high sugar content or dairy can worsen acne, one needs to see a professional before taking major steps on their diet.

Products that are harsh and sting cure acne

Most people have believed this for a long time, which is definitely not true. Some people go about using products that are unnecessary strong and wrong for their skin, in the name that it would. Check product content, do a skin test and see a dermatologist and skin care specialist before purchasing and using any product. Some people like to over scrub or use harsh abrasive face scrubs thinking it would cure their acne, but in turn makes the acne worse. Know your skin type and the best product possible to use.

Moisturizers are not good for acne prone skin

Ladies and gentlemen this is a big lie and do not listen to anyone who tells you this. The more you moisturize by using the non-oily moisturizer and applied in tiny bits, the better for your skin. Moisturizers actually play an important role in healing your acne and making it less visible. The less you apply a moisturizer makes the skin dry, unhealthy and gives room for more germs. Do not forget your sunscreen, to protect your skin from the sun. if possible get a moisturizer that has sunscreen in it, if you are too lazy to follow the steps.

It can be cured

Sorry to disappoint you but it has no cure, it can be controlled to the barest minimum by eating right, exercising, drinking lots of water, using the right product, sleeping well, by not over stressing yourself, having a positive mind-set and doing a facial at most once a month. Most people will grow out of it at some point in their lives, but no one knows when that will be. For now, work with a good dermatologist and skin care expert and voila you are good to go.

FashionSee Pretty Fashion Designer Who Got Laid Off By Jumai by magazineguy(op): 1:04pm On Sep 22, 2018
The Sprinkle Style Fashion House is a place that’s sure to appeal to any female fashion enthusiast, especially those with a knack for simple yet bold African attires that sell for as low as #5000 and as high as the Central Bank permits. The fashion house sits in the top floor of one of the desirous buildings that makes Kolapo Estate one of the choice areas in Magodo, and in extension, Lagos mainland. The setting of the fashion house is a work of art on its own–the measured spaces that form compartments, the uniformed white painted walls and the bright lights gives it such an exotic view.

Banking & Finance graduate of Houdegbe North American University, Temitope Atiyola, is the creative director of the brand. She is a dainty lady, presumably in her 20s. Looking at her, it is hard to believe that she has 11 years of tailoring experience which she revealed when she said, “officially, it (fashion designing) started in 2007. I couldn’t get to the university for a long time. So I went with a friend who was interested in catering (to a vocational training school). In the school they offered fashion classes as well so I said ‘why don’t I try this out. Let me develop on my hobby which is sewing, and that was hope I got to work on a sewing machine for the first time.”

Her early experience with fashion, as an artist, seems to have been passive and a bit casual even though her innate passion of creating dress designs and cutting samples was always there. This passion of hers, I figured from our chat, was fueled by the support of her parents. She spoke for minutes about the impact of her father on her career while she described her mother as “the whole brain behind the business”, explaining that although she always knew what she wanted, the encouragement she got from her mum helped her through the process of growing the brand.

The come up story of Sprinkle Style reifies the message from the old book that, “sometimes, the process leading to an achievement could be disguised as a misfortune.” Temitope Atiyota recounted her 4years of working in the Market Place Department of Jumia Nigeria, which ended in 2014 when her job was a casualty in the trimming-down exercises the company undertook. The loss threw her into the state of confusion and fear. She said, “I was confused. Fear gripped me. The fear of no salary coming in, the fear of how to start, will the market accept me? All these thoughts ran through my head and I was nearing depression.”

The force that brought calm to her troubled mind and helped her sail through the turbulence was the support from her mother and her fiancé whose actions seem to have been led. “Before I lost my job, my fiancé and my mum called me and said, ‘I think you need to leave your job you don’t look happy on it.’ I was like, ‘I’m getting paid, why would you tell me to leave my job?’ Guess what, it wasn’t even up to three days before I was laid off,” she said. After that experience, it was these voices that she harkened to when all was gloomy and she needed a ray of hope. Her mum and fiancé seem to know things that she didn’t know about herself; or that she knew but couldn’t just get to do. “I knew at the back of my mind that I was meant to start something. I had the idea, I had the voice telling me to go ahead but I just didn’t know I was ready.” The nudge she needed came from her support system which includes her mum, fiancé and her late father. They helped her see the signs that her future was somewhere else and not with Jumia.

Less than one week was enough to mourn her loss. Few days after her 9-5 career was shut down, she was chasing a new dream. A dream that’s just as chancy as it is rewarding. A dream that involves big risks and big reward, a dream that would either get her closer to the place of fulfillment or farther away from it. This dream of hers was Sprinkle Style and her journey of a thousand miles began with one step: training. Miss Atiyola returned to the training center to polish her fashion designing skill and started building her brand from her house – one job, two assignments, three projects and the growth pattern continued.

After about four years of building, the stature of Sprinkle Style Fashion House has grown from an in-door setup into what can be described as a fashion palace. Temitope mentioned that the secret behind the success of the brand is hard work and the goal is to “build the brand into a world standard fashion house that has a reputation for creativity and innovation.” The goal looks very much in sight considering that the brand’s growing reputation, especially in the circle of fashion enthusiasts. Temitope believes that in less than 5 years Sprinkle Style Fashion would have risen to the heights of the likes of Bespoke Fashion House – owned by Mai Atafo. She said, “the growth of the brand won’t stop until every African woman has grown confidence in style and finesse.”

HealthFive Aerobic Exercises Pregnant Ladies Can Do by magazineguy(op): 11:48am On Aug 14, 2018
Hey ladies. It’s not easy catering for two people at the same time and when you’re expecting a child it can definitely come with a lot of overwhelming feelings. As a fitness trainer I’m here to tell you that while you’re pregnant it’s very important to be active! This doesn’t mean going to the gym and lifting heavy weights but you should always strive to be healthy and fit most especially when you’re expecting.

Here are my findings of the benefits of exercising while pregnant:

-Pregnant women who exercise have less back pain, more energy and a better body image.

-A faster return to your pre-pregnancy shape.

Here in Nigeria 98% of the women don’t feel the need to exercise while they’re pregnant and in fact they believe that this is the worst time to even think about lifting a finger because of so many negative misconceptions or stories they’ve heard like exercising may affect the baby. In as much as this is not completely false there are doctor-recommended exercises that you can do at home with little or no weights involved.

In this article I’m going to give you five at-home exercises that you can do and feel great before your little one arrives!

Remember – Being fit doesn’t have to mean a big time commitment or fancy equipment. These are low impact safe pregnancy exercises. Simple, can be done at home, and is safe to do in each trimester but always check with your doctor before starting this or any exercise program

Plié Squats

Keep your feet parallel and hip-distance apart.

With your toes and knees turned out to 45 degrees, pull your belly button up and in. Bending your knees, lowering your torso as low as possible while keeping your back straight [shown]. Straighten your legs to return to starting position.

Repeat for reps

Plank Hold

Get down on your hands and knees, wrists directly under your shoulders. Lift your knees and straighten your legs behind you until your body forms a straight line. Don’t arch your back or let your belly sag [shown].

Hold for 1 to 2 breaths, working up to 5 breaths.

Strengthens: Core, arms and back

Side leg lifts

Lie on your right side, head supported by your forearm, right leg bent at a 45-degree angle and left leg straight. Place your opposite arm on the floor for stability. Lift left leg to about hip height and repeat for reps. you can use a resistance band for added effects.

Then, bend your left knee and rest it on top of pillows for support. Straighten your right leg and lift it as high as possible for reps. Switch sides and repeat for reps. Do this exercise ten times for both sides.

Strengthens: Core and inner thighs

Donkey kicks

Get on all fours on mat (hands under shoulders, knees under hips).

Keeping right knee bent 90 degrees, flex right foot and lift knee to hip level.

Lower knee without touching floor; lift again. Do 15 reps.

Strengthens: Your glutes

Lie face up on the floor, with your knees bent and feet flat on the ground. Keep your arms at your side with your palms down. Lift your hips off the ground until your knees, hips and shoulders form a straight line.

Strengthens: your quads and hamstrings and improves glute strength

Remember ladies if you’re healthy, the risks of moderate-intensity activity during pregnancy are very low, and will not increase the risk of low birth weight, pre-term delivery, or early pregnancy loss. But before you continue your old exercise routine or begin a new one, you should talk to your doctor about exercising while you’re pregnant.

BusinessBest Way To Start A Profitable Business For Young Entrepreneurs by magazineguy(op): 10:05am On Aug 13, 2018
If you’re young, and you are entrepreneurial, your single greatest asset is your age.

What they fail to tell you in school is that being “older” doesn’t necessarily make you “better.” What it makes you is different.

When you’re older, you see things through a lens created through years and years of varying experiences. In your industry (and/or tangential industries), you’ve learned what works, what doesn’t work, what people want and what they don’t want. You know the rules of the game. You know how people operate. And above all, you know enough to where you don’t feel not defeated when someone says that scary word, “No.”

All those things are great — and immensely valuable. But they are not what makes someone “better.”

Young people see life through an equally valuable, and different, lens.
When you’re young, you tend to be more instinctual than logical.

I have absolutely found this to be true for myself, as a young entrepreneur. While older individuals have an immense amount of knowledge at their fingertips, they tend to be quite logical when making decisions. Like I said, they have experiences they can point to what taught them, what worked and what didn’t, and make future decisions largely based upon those prior learnings.

Young entrepreneurs don’t have that luxury. They don’t have those experiences yet. And so, for better or worse, they are forced to make decisions based on instinct — what feels right, and what appears to be most obvious to them at the time.

The best businesses for young entrepreneurs to start are ones that build off any current working knowledge.
My parents used to tell me all the time, “Cole, do what you love, and be the best at what you do. That way, you’ll be both successful and happy.”

At 27 years old, I still consider myself to be a relatively young entrepreneur. My business, Digital Press, is a writing agency. We help CEOs and founders write more thoughtful articles, based on the insight they share with us. Before Digital Press, I was a freelance writer. And before that, I was studied creative writing in school.

From an outside perspective, the writing world is extremely saturated. Do you have any idea how many “blog posts” are written on the Internet each day? Millions. Nobody would ever look at the content writing space and think, “Wow, that’s a really untapped market — I should start a business there.”

Unfortunately, most young entrepreneurs think this way. Instead of auditing their own skill sets, they look for what’s easy and available. They poke around and base their decisions on what appears to be open territory — only to begin on the journey and learn the hard lesson that no industry is free from competition.

I didn’t think about it this way.

I heeded my parents’ advice: “I love writing, so I will become one of the best writers on the Internet.”
By the time I launched Digital Press, I knew the digital writing space better than anyone.

I had walked the walk myself, had studied all my competitors, had learned all the different ways people make money in this space, how, where, and why.

But most of all, I knew that if I pursued something I had a genuine interest in, I would be far more successful than if I tried to force myself to get excited about something I truly didn’t care about.

What’s interesting though (and this is where all young entrepreneurs should pay attention), my age has ended up working to my advantage.

I am young enough to be a “child of the Internet.” I speak the language fluently, and my early experiences as a competitive teenage gamer taught me how to see the Internet differently than most older, more “experienced” people in this space.

And yet, I am old enough and mature enough to understand the fundamentals of business. I’ve worked for an advertising agency. I’ve worked personally with 100+ CEOs. I have learned how to speak their language, without forgetting how to speak my own.

This, right here, is every young entrepreneur’s greatest advantage.
You have to remember what it is you’re bringing to the table, and why it’s valuable. And a large part of that is your instinct, and how “tuned in” you are to what’s happening in the digital world.

Now, where a lot of young entrepreneurs fail is they think that’s enough (instinct and gut) and it’s not. Just like how older business leaders need young people to help them keep pushing boundaries, young entrepreneurs need to learn from their older counterparts the ins and outs of the business world — and how that game works.

If you want to start a profitable business, then don’t pursue what other successful people have done just because you think it’ll be successful.

It’s going to be hard regardless.

There is going to be competition no matter which direction you choose.

So choose something you’re already genuinely interested in — and then work hard to learn everything else you need in order to bring that idea to life.

Music/RadioThe Best Looks From Burna Boy’s – Ye Video by magazineguy(op): 11:11am On Aug 11, 2018
Burna Boy dropped the video for “Ye” off his 2018 release Outside, and it’s a mildly artful and lovely piece of work. We’ve come to expect great visuals from Burna Boy through Video director Clarence Peters montage and “Ye” doesn’t disappoint — it’s hyper-directional with a Westernized feel to it, and the looks are complex, albeit totally preachy and unnoticed. We’re all about it, so peep my favourite moments from “Ye” below.

Money still rules

https://i2.wp.com/tushmagazine.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/image001.png?resize=300%2C144

Hysterically, a bunch of dollar notes still gets to be captured in a music video for a sanctimonious melody.

It’s very okay to smoke Marijuana

https://i2.wp.com/tushmagazine.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/image003.png?resize=300%2C133

Burna Boy had fun smoking while on set and even brought the puffs to the main video. It must have been Clarence’s idea to blow the smoke and write his name at the start of the video.

Women will be your downfall

https://i0.wp.com/tushmagazine.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/image005.png?resize=300%2C130

A vertical flip dimension of the models was in tone to send a harmless message in the role of women in our society, opinionatively.

Gang! Gang!! Gang!!!

https://i2.wp.com/tushmagazine.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/image007.png?resize=300%2C118

Burna’s occasional association with thuggery was pictured as he walks lackadaisically with two male models styled in masks and fraternity emblem.

Priez pour nous

https://i2.wp.com/tushmagazine.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/image009.png?resize=300%2C116

The sermonizing tone of ‘Ye’ prompted the prophet to rock a designer shirt with the French inscription ‘Priez pour nous’ which means ‘Pray for us’ in English. Ye should pass as a Nigerian anthem already.

Fela is an idol

https://i1.wp.com/tushmagazine.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/image011.png?resize=300%2C169

Burna Boy had fun playing around with his idol and favourite legend, Fela’s portraits and flag. This is a complete move to strengthen the influence of the late activist in his lifestyle and music.

Fit Fam

https://i0.wp.com/tushmagazine.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/image013.png?resize=300%2C169

Yes, Burna Boy is officially in the Fit fam. These stony abs were not built in one day. The man did not waste a second in showing off his effort.

Black Bentley

https://i0.wp.com/tushmagazine.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/image017.png?resize=300%2C129

This black Bentley goes for anything except that it didn’t stand beside a G-wagon as expected. Who doesn’t love an elegant Bentley?

Ebunoluwa doesn’t care

https://i0.wp.com/tushmagazine.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/image019.png?resize=300%2C169

Yet another insane view – Burna was not in a Benz and smoked ‘louder’ than ever, supported by moving cameras in less than three seconds.

He respects Timaya

https://i1.wp.com/tushmagazine.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/image022.jpg?resize=300%2C169

“Ye” also features Southern admirer, Timaya, styled in his famous and white garment. He didn’t leave his usual suspect and protégé, King Perryy as they both made cameo appearances which served as a major and focal point for the video.

Music/RadioDuncan Mighty Is Officially The New Cool by magazineguy(op): 10:51am On Aug 06, 2018
Many years ago, Duncan Mighty Okechukwu came into the Nigerian music scene with his 22-track project ‘Koliwater’. Additionally, his follow-up singles ‘Port Harcourt son’ and ‘Obianuju’ did tremendously well across the country. After that period, for him, it has been failed singles that never got to rock the airwaves and speakers.

Although in his hometown of Port Harcourt, the man is still regarded as the ‘Port Harcourt first son’ and his iconic status still remains as intact as it can ever be. Far East at Ariaria market in Aba, Abia State, his statue stands tall and erect, glazed in shiny apparel – a sign to show even neighboring Aba holds the ‘Obianuju’ crooner in high esteem.

Years later, Duncan Mighty left Port Harcourt with his construction and oil firms at stake. It was at that period we came across different clips and posts on social media linking him to Wizkid.

Upon release, Fake love was received as the genre-breaking, Nigerian-favorite pop/Rnb breakthrough that music fans never thought Duncan Mighty could score, especially with Wizkid as a featured artist. Though, the 2006 – 2010 era was based on an oddly-tight flavored pop sound. That song reshaped Eze Pitakwa’s music career

Listening again, ‘Fake love’ really boasted of serene moments and ease with which the two icons scored the melody. The Killertunes production has two notes and a continuous ballad that conjured the moment.

Now, Duncan is just himself, which does not necessarily mean he was less of himself before ‘Fake love’. Though, the Starboy montage and logo appearing on the visuals of ‘Fake love’ was part of the Duncan public identity and even more. These days, Duncan is living his best life with him being the most featured artist right now. ‘Fake love’ has gone on to become one of the most covered songs both at home and abroad.

Duncan boasts of collaborations with industry big brands such as Tiwa Savage, Reekado Banks, Masterkraft, DJ Xclusive, Ceeza Milli, Ugo Buzz, Bracket and B-Red. Recently, he was pictured in the studio with Davido and Peruzzi. Other forthcoming and confirmed collaborations are with Mr. 2kay and Idahams and a host of other Port Harcourt artists.
