Politics / Re: IPOB And Wike Face Off; Why Is It Difficult For Igbo To Have Friends. by Mancrossfire: 3:27pm On Nov 01, 2020 |
jude79: The history you knew is a doctored history by the early igbo traders that sojourn there. The ogoni people owned that land and they were very hospitable. Igbo traders were welcome from the east in ancient times when they came with their business. As time passes by they brought in their relatives and became more in numbers even outnumbered the indigenous people. They started dragging land and Title with the indigenous owner of the land. They took a step further by altering the name from "oyii-igbo" to obigbo. "Oyigbo" which is the short form of "Oyii igbo" means you will be our friends. That's was the treaty entered into by the early igbos and the indigenous people of the land. That if you are coming to stay here with us, you will be our friends not enemies. Unfortunately the igbos has an ulterior motive. |

[[s]quote author=gidgiddy post=95328897]For the past few years, Oyigbo, a satellite town of Portharcourt, Rivers State, has been in the News for violence. Some say the violence is caused by clashes between residents and the Northern community in the area, others say it is caused by clashes between the security forces and indigenes. There is even talk that IPOB is attacking the community, which does not seem realistic as IPOB is not known for attacking communities. Oyigbo's actual name is actually "Obigbo", the indigenes are ethnic Igbos. The area used to be in the old Aba province. In 1967 when General Gowon created Rivers states, Obigbo was one of the areas Gowon carved into the new Rivers State. After the war ended in 1970, the military government renamed Obigbo to 'Oyigbo' So can a resident or indigene of Oyigbo enlighten us all on what is causing the violence in that Town? Thanks[/quote][/s] Trash! The original owner of that land are the ogoni people. When the ibo traders came in for trading they were welcome by ancient ogoni people and an area was calved out for them. The original name is oyii igbo which means "you Will be our friends" while the short form is oyigbo due to pronunciation difficulties. Before long this traders from the east started dragging land and Title with the original owners of the land (ogoni people). They changed the original name to obigbo which was later revert to the original oyigbo. |
