2019 presidency: PDP shops for serving gov The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is considering the option of fielding a serving governor as its presidential candidate for the 2019 general elections.
PDP chieftains who spoke with our correspondent, yesterday, explained that the party needed someone who would be covered by executive immunity till May 29, 2019.
A former member of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) who preferred anonymity said the party was exploring several other options as well but that getting a saleable serving governor would reduce a lot of stress.
”You can’t rule out the possibility of the PDP fielding a serving governor but we are being painstaking in the process of selecting our presidential candidate,” he said. “The overall objective is to get that person that can defeat President Buhari; someone who will not be arrested later for alleged corruption. So we are exploring several options, including fielding a serving governor from the North,” he said.
Our correspondent reports that the PDP has only two serving governors from the North, Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo of Gombe State who is rounding off his second term and Darius Ishaku of Taraba State who is in his first term.
The PDP had zoned its presidential ticket to the North even as some sources said its searchlight for a credible candidate would go beyond party affiliation. A source said Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto State is also being considered for the ticket on grounds of his youthful age and immunity.
Tambuwal is still in the All Progressives Congress (APC) but insiders say PDP leaders were mounting pressure on him to return, banking on the grievances of the nPDP members within the APC.
The PDP spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan in a text message on whether the party was shopping for a serving governors said, “PDP is open and our party will create the requisite enabling environment for all aspirants seeking to be president on the platform of our party.”
A founding member of the PDP, Alhaji Aminu Yakudima, told our correspondent in a telephone interview that it was better to field someone who would not disappoint Nigerians after winning the polls.
“It is about people who can deliver and especially those who are conversant with the manifesto of the party and the political terrain generally; people who can deliver. “If you present a governor who is not doing well in the state, for instance, you are more or less creating more problems for the people. If you do that you are doing a disservice to Nigeria,” he said. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/2019-presidency-pdp-shops-for-serving-gov-250788.html |

This is coming as so soon asthe budget was inflated for "kwarept" fofosis. My problem with Nigerians is that they are too lazy that they only read news by headlines not contents. What Buhari said according to the contents is that corruption fight have not being easy so far to fight. He urged Nigerians to change for better. |

dmitted that anti-corruption war is not an easy one to fight.
This, according to him, is because corruption "affects so many different branches of our lives so much that some people do not even consider breaking trust is anymore a crime. It has become the norm.
"That is why we must fight this attitude and encourage Nigerians to CHANGE their attitudes and perspectives." President Buhari said this in Abuja on Tuesday at the commissioning of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission's Headquarters.
The president said throughout his journey in national service and since 2015, he had made a very conscious decision to pursue a vigorous fight against corruption in public life. "Since 2015, we have made significant progress in the fight against corruption. Everyone now knows that corrupt officials will be held to account, no matter how long it takes. "The goal of this administration is to ensure the protection of public trust, and the anti-corruption war is at its centre," the president stated.
He said his administration never never intended and was not engaged in witch-hunts, but was determined within the laws to call people to account. He appealed to Nigerians to support regulatory agencies like Economic and Financial Crimes Commission "because fighting corruption is everyone’s concern."
The president specifically called on the judiciary and the National Assembly to join hands in this national effort. He said his administration had recovered and was still recovering trillions of naira that were stolen in the past few years "by people without conscience. "We are pursuing recoveries everywhere and are making sure that anyone who has been found culpable is made to answer for his or her crime under the law. "It is my hope and expectation that the judiciary, which is a critical stakeholder and partner in the war against corruption, would continue to collaborate with the executive to bring corrupt people to book." The president called on the legislature to add more verve to the determination of his government to rid the nation of the "brazen corruption witnessed in recent years, through reviewing archaic provisions in our laws and proactive passage of new legislation." "What I see here is not only a structure of concrete and metal, I see in this edifice, the resolve of Nigerians to fight corruption. But structures are not the whole story. We must CHANGE our ways of handling public trust. Corruption not only kills governments, but destroys societies. It is the major reason why we are struggling with basic developmental issues that other comparable nations have long overcome."
Buhari noted that quite a number of nations were signifying interest in helping Nigeria tighten their laws and enter into agreements with the country to repatriate stolen funds and make the culprits face due process of law.
He said his government was committed to working with the nation's foreign friends to stop the inflow of stolen funds from Nigeria into their countries and recovering what is there already.
The president assured that those assets, when repatriated, would be put to building infrastructure. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/buhari-corruption-difficult-to-fight-250677.html

Senate President Bukola Saraki and House of Representatives Speaker Yakubu Dogara have ruled out the possibility of passing the 2018 budget this week as earlier promised. Addressing State House correspondents after meeting with President Buhari yesterday,Saraki said they hoped the budget would be laid this week and passed next week. Responding to a question on when the budget would be passed, the Senate president said: “If it can be laid this week and passed early next week, but we are hoping it will be laid this week.” Saraki said the meeting was at the behest of Buhari who wanted to brief them on his trip to the United States as well as on the budget. Saraki said they also talked about the recent invasion of the Senate, which he said was of concern to the legislature. The Senate President said Buhari showed great concern and assured that action would be taken to investigate the incident. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/n-assembly-postpones-budget-passage-to-next-week.htmlMynd44 lalasticlala oam4j |
