The North shot itself on the leg by allowing religious fanaticism, illiteracy, and poverty to thrive, because of it gluttonous drive for power. so it shoud face the monster it created for itself. I just wish this bandits would also find some of the northern elites and also kill them the same way they are wasting innocent souls. 1 Like |
Sports / 2013 AFCON Heroes: Where Are They Now? by manny4u(m): 9:36am On Jun 15, 2019 |
Culled from Punch Online Nigeria won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa with a squad largely made up of unknown faces on the continent. With only three members of that team in this year’s AFCON in Egypt. Vincent Enyeama (Unattached) Enyeama made his fifth Africa Cup of Nations appearance for the Eagles at the 2013 edition, where he kept three clean sheets and conceded three goals in six games. In 2015, he became the first Nigerian player to reach 101 caps. At club level, he was outstanding for French club, Lille, keeping 17 clean sheets in 35 league games in the 2013/14 season. He also emerged as the first goalkeeper to be named French Ligue 1 African Player of the Season. He retired from international football in October 2015. The 36-year-old last played for Lille in April 2017 and he was released by the 2011 French champions in August 2018. He is currently without a club. Austin Ejide (Hapoel Hadera) Ejide made no appearance at South Africa 2013. At club level, he helped his former Israeli club Hapoel Beer Sheva to the final of the 2015 Israeli State FA Cup where Hapoel Beer Sheva lost 6-2 to Maccabi Tel Aviv. Ejide conceded six goals in that encounter in what was his last game for the club. The former international kept 12 clean sheets in 32 games that season. He currently plays for Hapoel Hadera in the second division in Israel. Chigozie Agbim (Delta Force) Chigozie Agbim was the third choice keeper for Nigeria at the tournament in South Africa and made no appearance. Agbim was one of the five home-based players (Ejike Uzoenyi, Sunday Mba, Gabriel Reuben and Azubuike Egwuekwe) at the tournament. He was also an unused substitute for Nigeria at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. At club level, he featured for Gombe United after he was released by Enugu Rangers. He currently plays for Delta Force in the Nigeria National League. Joseph Yobo (Retired) The former Eagles captain played a cameo role at the tournament after losing his place to Kenneth Omeruo during the qualifiers. He made one start and five substitute appearances on the way to their third title. The 2013 AFCON was his sixth for Nigeria before he retired. Yobo featured for Everton, Fenerbahce and Norwich City. He made 101 appearances for the Eagles before calling it quits with the national team. Yobo currently works as a pundit with SuperSport. Efe Ambrose (unattached) Right-back Ambrose was sent off in the first game against Burkina Faso but returned to the starting line-up in the final group game against Ethiopia in their first win. Ambrose won four Scottish Premiership titles, one Scottish Cup and one Scottish League Cup in his five-year spell at Celtic before he joined Hibernian, where he helped them to the Scottish Championship. Ambrose is currently unattached after he was released by Derby County at the end of the 2018/19 season. Elderson Echiejile (HJK Helsinki) The 2013 AFCON was Echiejile’s second appearance at the tournament and he played all six games, sustaining a hamstring injury in the final. His performance, coupled with outstanding displays at the 2013 Confederations Cup earned him a big move to AS Monaco the following year. After two seasons at Monaco, Echiejile was loaned out to Standard Liege, Sivasspor, Sporting Gijon and Cercles Brugges before he terminated his contract with the French club in 2018. He was without a club for six months before joining Finnish club, HJK Helsinki. Juwon Oshaniwa (Akwa United) Former Ashdod left-back Oshaniwa played only 24 minutes at the tournament, coming on for Echiejile in the final. He was booked after five minutes for a rash challenge. Oshaniwa joined the Tynecastle club Heart on a three-year deal in 2015 but made only 25 appearances and none in season 2016-17. He left Scottish club by mutual consent a year before his contract was due to expire. He was capped 17 times by Nigeria. He joined Akwa United last summer in a bid to resurrect his career. Godfrey Oboabona (Unattached) Oboabona was one of Nigeria’s standout performers at the tournament in South Africa. The former Rizespor defender was one of three players that played every minute of the tournament for the Eagles. After the tournament, Oboabona signed a four-year contract with Rizespor. He recently terminated his contract with HNK Gorica in Croatia. Kenneth Omeruo (Leganes/Chelsea) Omeruo was an important part of Nigeria’s squad to the tournament. The central defender replaced Yobo in the Eagles’ second game against Zambia, which ended 1-1, and kept his place till the end of the season. Omeruo is one of the three players in the current squad to have won the AFCON title. Ahmed Musa and Mikel Obi are the other two players. The 25-year-old defender played on loan at Kasimpasa twice and also starred for ADO Den Haag, Middlesbrough, Alanyaspor and Leganes. Azubuike Egwuekwe ( Al-Nasr) Lanky defender Egwuekwe was an unused substitute all through the tournament. He was also listed by Nigeria for the 2013 Confederations Cup and the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. At club level, Egwuekwe featured for Supersport United before he was released in 2018. He currently plays for Al-Nasr Sports Club in Libya after a short spell in Finland with KuPS. Mikel Obi (Unattached) Mikel has represented Nigeria’s senior national team in every tournament. He is one of three surviving players from the 2013 AFCON squad in the current squad for the tournament, which gets underway on Friday. He’s arguably Nigeria’s most decorated football player having won two Premier League titles, four English FA Cups, one Champions League, one Europa League, one Olympic bronze medal and one AFCON title. The former Chelsea star is the most experienced player in the squad for the 2019 tournament. The Nigerian captain alongside Ogenyi Onazi and Sunday Mba in midfield, marshalled what proved to be the tightest, most organised midfield in South Africa. Sunday Mba (Unattached) Relatively unknown to the world in 2013, Mba’s heroics in the quarter-finals against Ivory Coast ensured the Eagles progressed towards their first major final in 13 years. He then conjured the magic again, when he grabbed the winner against Burkina Faso in the final of the competition to hand Nigeria a third title. His surprise inclusion in the starting line-up in the final group game against Ethiopia saw the Eagles earn their first win at the tournament. He played on loan at Warri Wolves from Enugu Rangers before he switched to CA Bastia in January 2015, a move which many believed cost him a place at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. He played for two seasons at Turkish second division club, Yeni Malatyaspor, before he was released. Obiora Nwankwo (Boavista) Obiora made just one substitute appearance for the Super Eagles at the tournament in a group match against Zambia, replacing Nosa Igiebor in the 1-1 draw. The AFCON triumph, Obiora was out injured for 18 months and became a forgotten man during his trying time. He played in Italy with Inter Milan, Parma and Padova between 2010 and 2013, before playing for Romanian club CFR Cluj, Spain’s Cordoba and Academica de Coimbra in Portugal. He then had an injury-ravaged stint in Greece with Levadiakos, before switching to Portuguese side Boavista last summer. Ejike Uzoenyi (Unattached) Uzoenyi played only 18 minutes at the tournament, coming on for Brown Ideye in the 72nd minute in Nigeria’s 4-1 win over Mali in the semi-final. He was loaned to Rennes in the French Ligue 1 from Enugu Rangers for two seasons. Afterwards, Uzoenyi joined Mamelodi Sundowns, where he made only six appearances. He also had a short stint with Bidvest Wits and Ajax Cape Town in the Premier Soccer League in South Africa. He is currently without a club. Fegor Ogude (Unattached) Ogude started the first two games for Nigeria at the tournament in midfield alongside Igiebor and Mikel but lost his place to Onazi. He joined Amkar Perm in 2014 and spent four years at the club before switching to Yenisey Krasnoyarsk. Following Yenisey’s relegation from the Russian Premier League at the end of the 2018/19 season, Ogude was released by the club. Ogenyi Onazi (Trabzonspor) Onazi had an impressive display at the 2013 AFCON. The Trabzonspor midfielder made his debut at the tournament, playing at right-back against Zambia in place of the suspended Ambrose. He went on to anchor the Eagles midfield alongside Mikel and Mba. He was a regular starter for Nigeria for five years until the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where he lost his place to Oghenekaro Etebo. His last appearance for Nigeria was against Seychelles in an AFCON qualifier. He is currently recuperating from an Achilles injury. Reuben Gabriel (Najran Sports Club) Despite not featuring in South Africa, Gabriel joined Scottish Premier League side Kilmarnock as a free agent, signing a three-year contract months after. He was released, after the club accepted his request. He joined Belgian Pro League side Waasland-Beveren on a one-and-a-half-year contract and is currently on the books of Najran Sports Club in Saudi Arabia. Nosa Igiebor (Anorthosis Famagusta) Highly-rated Igiebor was a flop at the tournament. He made two starts before he lost his place in the squad. He started his career in the NPFL with defunct Sharks of Port Harcourt, before joining Warri Wolves. He moved to Lillestrøm in Norway and then on to Hapoel Tel Aviv in Israel. Igiebor also starred for Real Betis, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Rizespor, Vancouver Whitecaps, but presently plays in Cyprus with Anorthosis Famagusta. Emmanuel Emenike (unattached) Emmanuel Emenike was the top scorer at the tourney with four goals. The power-playing forward has played around Europe for several sides, featuring for Karabukspor, Fenerbahce and Spartak Moscow. He also had a brief spell with Al Ain before joining West Ham, Olympiacos and Las Palmas in Spain. Brown Ideye (Aris) Ideye formed a deadly partnership with Emenike in attack, scoring once at the tournament. He made his name playing for Sochaux in the French Ligue 1 and with Dynamo Kyiv in Ukraine. He joined West Brom in a shock move after being dropped from the 2014 World Cup squad. He also played for Olympiacos, Tianjin Teda, Malaga and now Aris in Greece. Victor Moses (Fenerbahce) Moses had his breakthrough in the Eagles at the tournament, as his brace against Ethiopia proved crucial to Nigeria’s progress to the quarter-final. Moses, who won the Premier League, English FA Cup and the Europa League, also played for Liverpool, Stoke City and West Ham. He is currently on an 18-month loan deal at Fenerbahce from Chelsea. He retired from the Eagles after the 2018 World Cup to concentrate on club duties. Ikechukwu Uche (Gimnastic) Ike Uche had a not-too-impressive competition despite emerging as Nigeria’s top scorer in the qualifiers. He failed to score a goal in South Africa. The former Villarreal striker played for Granada, UNAL in Mexico, before returning to Spain on a loan spell with Malaga. He now plays for Gimnastic in the Spanish lower division. Ahmed Musa (Al Nassr) Musa was one of the youngest players in the Eagles’ squad. He started the first two games, before losing his place to Moses. He is currently the vice-captain of the Eagles preparing for the 2019 AFCON. The ex-CSKA Moscow star went on to sign for Leicester City before moving to Saudi club Al Nassr. https://l.?u=https%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2F2Kja8Ug&h=AT2XRdqjaYI1hczeRAuJFVn2DUaQZ_B3OYgiD8ogoigYEbEp58T7E9YleIrfyqX6XA9r1dKCjA2e04MbNd9P1iAGNUIB2GMx8-nOz4AmxGSoNkn_upNLa47wbgJw8EpBS9lyOgEKPg |
