Does anyone know that with Lagos rail, you can live in Okokomaiko/Sango Ota/Papalanto etc and work in Lekki/VI/Ikoyi and it would not be stress getting to work by 8.00a.m and getting home by 6.00pm?
Does anyone realise that when Lagos Rail is live it estimated to move 2million people daily (growth forcast to 5million). Imagine @an average cost of 1k per customer per day = 2billion. Imagine Lagos' partnership is 30% that equals 18billion a month. Currently, Lagos does not even get 10billion from FG monthly allocation, yet Lagos Rail is forecast to give almost double that.
Even if our leaders are selling us silly narratives (like Wike in this context) can't we try to be futuristic in our thinking? |

adem30: The same thing is happening in Lagos, but Ambode is making great progress in completing the project. Ambode administration have even spent more money on the project compare to what Fashola spent, but at the end, it will be the benefit of the masses. I drove through Leventis - Outer Marina over the weekend. I was pleasantly surprised at the pace of work. I used to accuse Ambode of being slow on the project, but when I discovered that the beams to carry the bridges are just coming out of water, I understood the amount of work and time needed to put those piles in water. Currently They are laying the slabs that the rail tracks will rest upon from CMS end back to Ijora. I estimate they will complete this in 3 months. If they lay those tracks, by mid-next year the train should be ready to roll, bearing any time-lag estimated for testing. |

Same mentality Buhari has in continuing Jonathan uncompleted projects, but instead of appreciating that you guys result on insulting him on doing the right thing Bros, wrt the underlined.......When Lagos is connected by in-land rail and people move around town with ease as done in dynamic environments, these people will say "it is because Lagos was a Federal Capital and FG put it there". These people are their own worst enemies. The only reason they are hailing Wike for abandoning the project is simply about hatred. Did I hear someone talk about over inflated project? I dare ask, which project have we not accused of being over inflated. Even if it's over inflated as alleged, what has Wike done to review and renegotiate. I served in PH in 2000. This is perfect, if well managed for Small and Medium size businesses, Housing Estates and cottage industries or light manufacturers what exactly will be the source of power for these mini generation companies? definitely not gas because we don't have a widespread gas pipeline like in the western countries and diesel is too expensive, solar is also not economical at the present price level for power. Chukwuka16: Nice analysis by the way.
My major concern is lack of regulation. Commonsense will demand that before making such statements there is proper legislation that guides how such setup will work. Things like safety nets and technical constraints which are the more important considering how bad our safety record is. Furthermore how are clients going to connect? It can't obviously be the distribution grid owned by the discos since that will lead to immediate shut down if everyone is pushing electricity into it without some limits. Hope he is not imagining the road side kerosene seller kind of scenario for electricity. This is some dangerous issue that requires seriousness. For a compound that maybe okay but with generation getting to 500kW and beyond then there needs to be some control. Haba, even tie grid inverters are properly regulated in countries with feed in tariffs.
This is the problem of having triangular pegs in circular holes. Fashola obviously is overwhelmed by the power issue and is now firing blanks. Your major concern stems from your ignorance. Most of what you stated are already factored into the equation, all you needed to do is to find out how this arrangement works. You do not expect Fashola to spell out all the arrangements in a single interview while on inspection works. What "legislation" are you looking for when the law already states clearly the band that goes to the grid. "Safety nets" and "Technical Constraints" to me are just "whizzle"/vague words that tries to betray the intent. Currently players in the Solar panel business will tell you that there have been lots of power sharing arrangements, where houses in close proximity can concentrate panels in a strategic location. They then decided on what sharing arrangement they deem acceptable. Fashola is simply telling us what had already been in the law that people are not exercising. I have had of investors making overtures to estates for these arrangements. The challenge they face is the off-grid infrastructure. Someone has to pay that price and expecting the government to do so is tantamount to living in fools paradise |

Same for people with big Solar power installations. a variant of this is done in UK, Spain and some other parts of Europe. Home owners of alternative powers with excess, can get tax deductibles through selling their excess (excess on solar) to the grid |

BlackPantherxXx: Great post. Your dissection of the arguments of kola was flawless.
I am greatly impressed by your intellect, PLEASE since kola's logic was faulty, what solutions do you propose that you think would work for Nigeria?
I don't believe folks like Atiku and Sowore, but i always read their political manifestos and economic blueprints. I love learning and seeing from others' perspectives. Thanks Bro, but we learn from each other everyday. To your question, our problem to me is less of manifestos and blue print (although a well articulated and visionary blueprint is essential). Our problem to me is the need to take our fate in our hands and work it out, but I will discuss a few 1. We all need to be committed to the Nigerian franchise. We dwell too much complaining, comparing ourselves to others, running away from our problems and blame game. The people blame the government, the government blame the people, South blames North, North blames South, Christians are anti-Islam, Islam is anti-Christian. We've driven the "irresponsible" culture down up to family levels....... we are less committed to solutions. My take is until we start from our little way to "generate" the "air of solution" and let such envelope our country......... 2. We need to learn take longer-term approach to problem solving. We want quick fixes and see longer-and-more-sustaining solutions as time wasting. For example look at this currency swap deal with China. If we are strategic, I would imagine that there will be increase in import volumes of allowable products, then (if we are smart) we constrain the Chinese to situate the manufacturing plants of some of these products in Nigeria, with an equitable Nigerian staff and mandatory knowledge transfer. Later the government can partner with a consortium of Nigerian private sector players to build local replicas. After we've fully mastered the technology and can mass produce conveniently, we start reducing the volume of imports and get them off our import list. That's the model the China, Singapore, Malaysia etc used. My lecturer in Bskul once joked that the Bus Jinbei (Replica of Toyota Hi-Ace) is one of the Bi-products of Toyota's misadventure in China. We need to be smart about how we use this currency Swap deal while it lasts. We cannot afford to sit idle, and be like all roads leads to China, and start importing with reckless abandon. Govt needs to step in as early as possible and control what will be imported under the swap arrangement. The proportion of finished goods must be lower than raw materials, machines and manufacturing input. 3. We must develop our home grown solution. Prof Osibanjo alluded to this at the WEF conference where he ascerts that African have started demonstrating the ability to solve their own problems in their own way. We must take learning experience from every situation. For example, politics is local, so also should our education systems, health care, infrastructure, power etc have a sizable does of local flavour. Do we need "world class" hospitals or more of "Decent Health Centres" that are 5mins distances in each localities. Do we need mega schools (Aregbesola's model - Standard schools with adequate infrastructures capable of hosting 1000 students per school) or do we need "Decent small schools" (Indian Model) 5 mins walk in every locality. I share Prof. Osinbajo/Fashola's vision on Rural Electrification; i.e. Off-Grid solar models for markets, village homes, clinics, town-halls etc where we can cut heavy cost and investment in power-grid infrastructure to these localities and the cost of the infrastructures out-weighs the returns. I was on a research team 2yrs ago. We observed that a market cluster started evolving in Brazil called the "Home-Made" markets. People in their homes are making cakes, biscuits, clothes....name it and were selling through social media, word of mouth and referals. It elicited attention in the academia because of the share volume of people and transactions in these market space. ......my point - We must develop "local" solutions. 3. We must open the country up further in business. We have lots of virgin "waste-lands" that are assets to us. We need Agri-Business clusters, Cloth-making clusters, Petro-chemical clusters. There is a lot of potential opportunities here. We have huge deficit in the blue-collar sector for example. Our artisans are sitting on gold-mine but are ignorant about it. I get upset when I see for example road construction going on and a "white-man" is driving Caterpillars, Welding and other somewhat basic technical stuffs. Many people are in Universities, but ideally should be in specialized skill development institutions that are feeders to budding SME and Industries. Our leaders needs to start painting these pictures in simplistic terms to the lay-man. 4. We must kill corruption in all spheres. We must not play politics with it. Be it APC or PDP, let all corrupt element be prosecuted and jailed. What we are doing now is horse trading; putrid narratives like "why is it only "looters" in PDP.......". It is when we understand that the $3billion stollen by Diezani, Aluko and Omokore could have paid the salaries of N-power workforce for 2yrs, should we begin to understand what corruption is doing to kill us. We must jail corrupt people and jail them "generously", not a slap on the wrist. my 2 cents |

rusher14: : Emzor and the likes cannot claim they didn't realise a disproportionate hike in demand of a product that is strictly a medicine one that could be abused.
When you start churning out medicines like you would beverages it means you are encouraging abuse.
A massive fine should be imposed on these pharmaceutical companies who participated in encouraging abuse of this product well against the ethics of the profession.
I see Nigerians above me once again supporting evil because that is their latest fad.
Nigeria would never be that country you desire it to be as long as your immediate reaction is cynicism and hate. How did they encourage abuse? The NAFDAC that didn't do their job, Who should fine them?
You mean a pharmaceutical company that produces a drug whose one of the chemical components is deemed dangerous at high levels......now sees a ridiculous, abnormal and boisterous demand in that same drug and kept producing it? Did you understand the gravity or the context of the dangerous sales agent of Emzor (who himself should be in jail by now). He seemly was not selling to "Chemists" or "Pharmacies" but to "drug-dealers" who are making a kill selling to these youths. So you process that Emzor should keep producing something injurious to the people and absolve themselves from responsibilities, why? because NAFDAC is supposed to clean-up the messsey create? Emzor and others produced legitimate drugs and sell. It's not their headache that its abused, its the ministry of health that should figure that out.. Not sure they have a functional minister though, had this been d Ebola era, maybe-just maybe Nigeria may have been decongested (pun intended). They are supposed to churn out medicine even much more than beverages so people get treated properly and with the right drugs. Don't be overly sentimental.
I don't know if it is immaturity speaking here or "unwilful" ignorance. Who told you it is not their headache that drugs are abused in this context? I suggest you familiarise yourself with ethic issues, litigations and academic work on the social responsibilities of pharmaceutical companies before making this bland and "blunderous" submission. In fact one of the issues the world is concerned about with pharmaceutical companies is "Corporate Greed". Consuming codine at specific levels are are safe, but beyond that level are unsafe. How come the leadership of Emzor did not observe an irregular pattern in the demand/production of codine? The Ministry of Health, to me, is only liable for not bringing the hammer sooner. See my reaction in blue kolawoleibukun: the real beneficiary to this deal is China. instead of Nigerian government to look inward and see how it can shake up its manufacturing and production of locally made goods they are swapping currencies for Nigeria to become the largest dump sites of adulterated goods. china is not a credible market for Nigeria. Chinese make fake goods and fakes drugs for Nigeria. why cant we aim higher than the toilet? is it wrong to swap currency with Japan? How about Germany or Australia? we have the oil for crying out loud. Why can't we do business with big giants like the US? Buhari recently went to the US but for what?
You have lumped a lot of things together and all just showed unbelievable (albeit deliberate) ignorance
1. Currency swap deal is to facilitate commerce. Commerce involves what Nigeria will opt for including areas of manufacturing (Machines), Agriculture, Energy etc. It is not just about dumping Chinese products here.
2. Why should we swap with Japan at the moment when the Japanese equivalent of People’s Bank of China (PBOC) is not making (& does not have the financial muscle) to make the kind of offer China is making?. What is the volume of commerce between Nigeria & Germany or Australia? Do you think you just enter bilateral agreement because of country's fancy names? Has America given us the kind of offer China is giving us and we refused? We should not overrate our present condition and think we should get "better deals" when we currently are simply trying to improve our "barging grounds"
China is making billions from Nigeria and they need us. we are begging china for what? we are part of the reasons why the Chinese can tussle with the US. the US imposed a recent tax increase on Chinese goods. they know that they have other markets to sell fake stuff and make higher profit that is why they are feeling high.
China is making billions from Nigeria; Alone? If I might ask? What is the volume of trade between China & Nigeria compared to any of the BRICS'? You are simply overestimating Nigeria's bargaining chip. Comparing us with US is simply ridiculous
warri steel, ajaokuta steel why cant we harness what we have? look at all our ports are closing. warri port is a bay of fleas, port harcourt is being salvaged by the oil vessels leaving the bay. why cant we open up these areas. by now easterner and southerners should not risk their lives on the roads with loads. our waterway should be functioning. why can't the igbos drop their goods on a boat and ship it to the east. why do they have to encounter thieves and robbers and also criminal law enforcement officers on the road? if these goods came into the country by water, why cant they be moved into boats and shipped down? why do easterners have to travel down to lagos to board an international flight when the traffic in our airports is from the east? why not make life easy for people?
The simple answer to these your emotional question lies in our ability to plan and execute and not complain or sabotage. Have you asked yourself this question, if Warri or Portharcourt or Calabar ports are that viable, why haven't any private sector proposed a PPA arrangement and offer to take over? Have you consider SECURITY issues on the water ways? Why haven't the governors of these states taken a 5yr view to making these ports come-back to reality, instead of laying blame or waiting for manna from FG? Lagos started planning for Lekki deep-sea port over 7years ago, construction is just getting off.
kano airport is an eyesore. is not an airport is an air strip. dirty and dilapidated. and yet we have big names from that state. why is the railway not functioning? why should the hausa man carry loads in gwongoro from lagos to kaduna? why should southerners and westerners carry yam and agricultural products in gwongoro from the north? why cant we have trains?
Anybody will go do business where there are opportunities and enabling environment. If the Hausa man is welcomed and able to do his business is Syria, then by all means he should go there if his next door neighbour makes life misrable for him

there is no electricity in our country. this is the deal that Nigeria should swap with china. not currency. let the Chinese come and build our electricity like the americans built the panama canal. let them manage it for 100 years for all I care but let there be light in Nigeria. ah ah God create the full world and said let there be light. why is there no light in Nigeria?
You are simply letting out steam and not articulated thoughts
and we are celebrating all these people. speak the truth. these people do not care about us. show no love to a heartless man. people are dying people are suffering and no one cares. we keep acting selfishly until we become victims or our family members begin to gt victimized. they are killing us and no one is coming out.
what sort of deal is this? all the fake Gucci, fake fones and fake products all come from china. china is not credible at all. we have the money why not buy from the US or Germany? the president's cars did not come from china. if they want to swap with chinea let us start from the presidency. let him use Chinese fones, drive Chinese cars and let the Chinese build his house. they are populating our country with trash. we do not need china. china needs us. we are a target for china.
Dora Akunyili went to china to plead with the government to stop selling fake medicine to Nigeria. she went that far. china is too populated they do not care about humans. if you have ever been to china you will see that what they sell to you is not what they use. they cannot never use what they give you. is that a country to partner with? let us develop ourselves. Nigerians are all running out. nothing works at all. a bunch of mediocrity remains to destroy the country. it hurts really bad to see people suffer for nothing. people die from buying fake drugs. You simple forgot to blame the most important culprit, YOURSELF |
