LiteratureRe: Content Writing. How To Go About It In 2022. by marenx: 6:46pm On Apr 09, 2022
PeaceJoyLove:
Websites
Develop your websites if you are running your blog. Learn WordPress. Do not employ Nigerian website builders because they do not know the right website approach. Learn it if you can, or you pay very well.

Note that this post is for people who want to set up their websites. Even you want to get a job, you should learn it because some employers may give you limited access to their WordPress site. If you cannot do it, they will not employ you no matter how skillful you are.

The latest update from Google in 2021 contains some rules which include "speed". Your website must be very fast. Optimize your website. Not everyone can do this, but very few people. Check the speed of your website. Check both mobile and desktop.

Pictures attached show that of Nairaland. It is poor. But Nairaland is a well-established site. If you have a new website and you have this score, you are going nowhere. If you have to spend very high to achieve a very good score, so be it. But the truth is that Nairaland arranged some things very well. When you investigate this site, you will appreciate some things done very well. I believe the speed can be improved easily. In my view, the owner is not paying attention to it. When you are already a king, you won't pay attention to some issues. Lol.

You may need to change the whole of your website. It may require you to change everything about it. Why? Those plugins and themes built in those days add more codes. Google engineers detected it is hard for Google to crawl easily if there are many codes like that on your websites; therefore, Google changed the algorithm. When Google sees too many of such codes on your website, it backs out. The implication is that it won't rank high your website, and it will take note of it to not go there again. So, if you have many of these issues and you get to the limit where Google says...ok... it's time to never crawl into this website, there is nothing you can do in the immediate period to help your site. If you are looking for a job, you do not need this.

It may require you to purchase another WordPress premium theme. I repeat, most website builders in Nigeria cannot do it. Theirs is to give you a working website, but with so many issues. Can you see how simple nairaland is? I used to think it is a "sh.itty" forum. But the simplicity has helped its speed. However, I still believe there are ways to make it more beautiful without compromising the speed. One important factor Google has included as I wrote earlier is to reduce the lines of codes as much as we can.

So, if you are the type who wants to use free themes and free everything for your website, forget it.

You cannot rank now easily like those blogs that started without SEO and optimization in those days. There wasn't enough competition then. If you are into gossip, you cannot easily beat the top blogs with 1 to 5 million monthly visits. How? You cannot. You start gradually knowing what to do. That's a battle you can not win easily if you do not get crushed.

Innovation is the ONLY weapon that kills giants like those. As long as there isn't anything new, forget it. Nokia and Motorola died when we all felt it wasn't impossible. Blackberry died too. Yahoo, Hotmail, MSN mails all died when Gmail started bringing out innovation back to back.

Those giants have dominated google. And another issue is that they are well established that they do not even need search engines. They are already well known. Many people don't need to search for anything before typing nairaland in their web browsers. Who knows your domain name? You are nobody. So, your starting point is that when people search through Google, they find you at the top. Then, people will start knowing you more and more. And it may get to a stage they do not need to search again. They just type your domain name without searching.

Please, the above is not easy. Do not start asking me for shortcuts to beat Linda Ikeji or Nairaland. I do not have the recipe other than getting into the game gradually. And some battles aren't worth fighting. You have lost before you even started.
Bitter truth.

There was a man named Demon who lived on the Isle of Marasiwa. Legend has it that Demon was born human, but was a god and could return anytime to the clouds. He lived for a hundred years, on the Isle, alone, not until a shipwreck moved people on the shore.
“Who are you people?” Demon asked.
“We won’t hurt you!"
“Why should I trust that you won't?”
They were half as scared as him. Not anyone would see a half-naked man and still stand—
“Seriously, trust us,”
Demon was calm.
The people asked for his name, and he replied, “I AM DEMON!”

LiteratureA Proud Writer by marenx(op):
A Proud Writer

Maren J. Mafuyai

This is the second time I wrote about writing this year and I'm glad I did.

Obviously, I'm not a best-selling writter nor am I an established one (I haven't yet authored a book), yet I called myself a proud Writer.

Last year, I felt I would never regret not having yet authored a book or a best-seller because I don't have to author a book to be a writer.

Generally, my success story in writing field is unless I live in prison without any writing material or hand I can't quit writing.

But why?

According to a senior editor and writer for Hongkiat, Singyin Lee, on honkiat.com:

"A probable source for what we are passionate about may come from what we were exposed to during our childhood. Many simple things such as sketching, music, collecting action figures or airplane models that we did when we were young evolve to become what we are passionate about when we are adults."

When I was 15, after I wrote a few words thrice a week, writing followed me to adulthood as passion.

Most times, the only bug that reeks me off is inconsistency or fluctuating writing habit. How it holds me back in the process is mysterious even to me.

Over the years it has proven to be both charming and difficult.

One day after I published an article on my wordpress blog, someone I never knew loved what I wrote.

Precisely, what made the blog post that attracted him were many hours of trial and error.

William Faulkner, an American writer known for his novels and short stories set in the fictional Yoknapatawpha County, based on Lafayette County, Mississippi, said:

"Read, read, read. Read everything -- trash, classics, good and bad, and see how they do it. Just like a carpenter who works as an apprentice and studies the master. Read! You'll absorb it. Then write. If it's good, you'll find out. If it's not, throw it out of the window."

But I didn't throw this one out.

Thanks for reading my work. Have a big time.

Why Today Should Be a Lucky Day for the Sick

marenx the Writer

April 7, 2022

I know most people don't know why today is so special. That's why I'm here to tell you the reason plus what we should do.

For many years, I dream of becoming a writer to represent a certain group of people. And now--because today is International Health Day--I'm talking about caring for the sick.

But before I proceed, below is a white space left for me and you to observe a minute silence for those who died untimely.

May their souls rest in peace.
Again, may their souls rest in peace.

If you haven't known why today is a special day, today is a special day because it's International Health Day, a day for every member-state of World Health Organisation to focus on health issues. Remember COVID-19 is the most alarming issue today but, apart from terrorism, hunger, natural disaster and accidents, malaria fiver, typhoid, diabetes, hepatitis, breast cancer, etc are silently killing Nigerians at home and in the hospital.

Those who died have died but those who are struggling to recover needs us by their side.

When I visited Jos University Teaching Hospital last year, I knew many sick people need our help. For from Jos city to Jos University Teaching Hospital, transport fare alone is something sucking let alone feeding and hospital bills.

I saw some recovered patience begging for money. Someone whose leg had fractures met us and said any amount we gave can help.

And most public general hospitals you visit in Nigeria the story is the same: the sick need our presence, need our financial support and need to hear us say: "You'll soon recover and continue your good life."

And doing what they need is giving them hope, and giving them hope is what we should be doing.

My quote for this post is from Dr. Lissa Rankin, a physician, healer, author, artist, speaker, visionary, mystic, and activist:

"Sometimes we forget when people are sick or hurt that what they most need is to feel connected, to be loved, to be touched."

I stopped here now. Thanks for the reading. Give the sick hope today.

One reason why the most wisest people on earth look lazier

If you see the most wisest people, sometimes they look as if they are fools. You'll notice most of them look contented but reserved. You'll also notice most of them look slower or lazier as if not good at doing hardwork. Why do they look as such?

This may be the reason:

You need to choose to be slow to think wisely. Take absolute control of yourself.

"Lazy people are very creative when it comes to organizing their work. They don't waste time on unnecessary things and get straight to the point. A lazy employee will always find a way to automate and optimize all the repetitive processes in their jobs. ... Lazy people always try to make life easier." From "7 Reasons Why Lazy People Are More Likely To Be ..." www.lifehack.org#

Those who look lazy are not lazy. They're just calculating their next step.

Good question. In my opinion, Nairaland has been already functioning as a social media (depending on what social media means to you), except that its policy favors Nigeria more than any other African country like Ghana, South Africa, etc. Though Facebook and Google policy too favors USA and Canada more than any other country. Nairaland should have a French version too if it doesn't have one.

Like Great Nnamdi Azikiwe, Obafemi Awolowo is one of the best African leaders. Listen to what he had to say.

Top 3 quotes by Obafemi Awolowo

1. Nigeria is not a nation. It is a mere geographical expression. There are no 'Nigerians' in the same sense as there are 'English,' 'Welsh,' or 'French.' The word 'Nigerian' is merely a distinctive appellation to distinguish those who live within the boundaries of Nigeria and those who do not.

Obafemi Awolowo

2. Those of us placed in a position of leadership must be prepared to grasp the nettle if we unite in doing so, and if, in addition, we set a worthy example and a marat on pace in probity, unselfishness, and self-sacrifice, the people will follow, all too readily, in our footsteps.

Obafemi Awolowo

3. Violence never settles anything right: apart from injuring your own soul, it injures the best cause. It lingers on long after the object of hate has disappeared from the scene to plague the lives of those who have employed it against their foes.

EducationOne Reason You Shouldn't Let Leaders Kill Your Dream Of Residing In Europe by marenx(op): 11:42am On Feb 05, 2022
1. Why are they and their children going there?

They'll say Don't smuggle while corruption is worse than smuggling to Europe. After all, a very few Nigerian who smuggled to Europe twenty years ago are now the best sources of revenue and employment in Nigeria. Europe herself is the best continent in the world because her sons and daughters smuggled to Africa, America, Asia and Australia before. History has it that Japan smuggles to Europe to steal technology. Chinese did the same later. Except gold and oil-rich countries, most rich countries are rich through dubious means.

Though it is bad to have ill-gotten riches, this is the system of our time since government avoid religion.
LiteratureAddressing People Is Hard And Lucrative. This Is A Tested Secret. by marenx(op):
By marenx the Writer

Addressing people without shaking is an asset I wanted to have since my secondary school years. A lot of people wanted to have this asset, but only a few out there have it.

It is easy for many people to post something on Facebook, talk to a stranger and even be an actor, but why is it difficult to stand before people and talk?

One day I was called to talk to my classmates and my lecturer on a topic I was given one week ago. I stood there until I felt I was alone paralyzing in the wilderness. I forgot all what I had planned to say.

Not only that, it took me more than a month to recover from the shame.

I told myself God didn’t create me to address people.

But when I began teaching in one school, a colleague told me something important. He said most graduates who hate teaching don’t hate it for poor salary structure but for finding it hard to stand before students and deliver a message. Most people I know who can stand before people and talk love teaching so I agreed with him.

And he told me the secret that changed my life.

He said: ‘Whenever I plan what to tell people, I end up saying it in a different way.’

And when he was given an opportunity to address assembly, I watched and observed him as he spoke.

And I noticed 3 things that distinguished him from me:

1. He didn’t worry about what he plans to say.
2. He didn’t cram what he plans to say and
3. He began by saying something he knew well (anecdotes).

I remembered stand-up comedians. My colleague was using the same techniques stand-up comedians are using.

Comedians never cram what to say: they solely depend on anecdotes.

The day I was asked to address many people I put all that to practice and my performance surprised me.

Using those techniques, I also unearth another secret: the use of silence--what finally makes me a big voice.

To be continued with the use of silence.....

"We teach girls to shrink themselves, to make themselves
smaller. We say to girls, you can have ambition, but not too much. You should aim to be successful, but not too successful. Otherwise, you would threaten the man. Because I am female, I am expected to aspire to marriage. I am expected to make my life
choices always keeping in mind
that marriage is the most important. Now marriage can be a source of joy and love and mutual support but why do we teach girls to aspire to marriage and we don’t teach boys the same? We raise girls to see each other as competitors not for jobs or accomplishments, which I think can be a good thing, but for the attention of men. We teach girls that they cannot be sexual beings in the way that boys are."

From We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Huh! In my opinion, she didn't know that being this crazy about human male power (making their power more popular) will make boys more powerful over girls.

They thought that perhaps it was a good behavior since radio people accepted it but someone said radio people too are parrots of the whites, that main stream media are the devils of African culture. The issue seemed to cause argument when someone concluded that whites are the inventors of the main stream media and all the publishing protocols. "Does that mean we can't use white's invention to promote our culture as Indians do?" After a while, the players returned to their game and finally guessed that Matawal chose that behavior to become a city champion for only in the city were people like Matawal praised.

Darkness like dough swallowed a little shanty town in vain. Edging in to the dark corner, in the decaying smell of dark gutters, footsteps like soft drum beats, Jumo and Oldboy could hear the fading cargo train’s Kutu kutu kutu across the city.
Like thieves?
No.
Like fools?
No.
We know underdevelopment, Erico said.
Oldboy removed his cigarette and lit it. His slender legs, as the one painted in cartoon section of Vanguard, or the one in the frescoes, alone could tell us more about his history before we the white foreign miners knew.
“In the 1980s”, he said, “I had a big deal of loosing a windshield and tires of Peugeot. But thanks, I never held a gun.”
“I thought you will tell me a worse crime”, Jumo said and lit a cigarette.
“Have you read James Hadley Chase?”
“What are you saying dear? You mean you could cross the fence and loose a windshield and tires of Peugeot? Do you know what it means to own such a car in those days?”
“I can’t deny it”, Jumo said and lit a cigarette.
“We have unsophisticated categories of thieves, anyway.”
But Oldboy did not know what he meant by ‘unsophisticated.’ He continued, “If we broke, we could steal everything, even coffee. I stole a sack of flip-flop, and I was nearly caught. I became afraid, and slept under a cargo train that nearly annihilated me in the early morning hours.”
“You were tough”, Jumo said. “But those James Hadley Chase’s characters, even Crew could call you a monkey.”
The only thing Oldboy could do, after he realized his waywardness, was to reach out his hand in a wince to slap him, but Jumo, his friend, a bad boy, slipped out and careened in to the bar.
“Bad boy”, he stammered. “Idiot…let me catch you!”

Literature4 Reasons People Don't Like Your Writing by marenx(op):
1. You don't yet have targeted audience. Look for targeted audience through visiting forums like Nairaland or News sites like daily trust or Facebook group.

2. You don't have a niche. Chinua Achebe focussed on Igbo culture. What do you focus on? If you are here today and there tomorrow, you will certainly lose your targeted audience. In fiction, we have niches that can be called genres eg. romance, crime, gothic, thriller, etc. In non-fiction, we have niches as follows: video games, politics, science, travel, cars, parenting, flora fauna, finance, selfhelp, pets, etc.

3. You don't review other people's work. Reviewing other people's work can make you a popular writer in no time. How? If you review people works, even if it's an article, they'll thank you and review your work in return. Someone will even invite you to submit your work to be published on a popular website. It was after reviewing people's works, George Orwel becomes a father of political writing. If you download his essays on Google, you'll see that most of them are reviews.

4. You don't want to write a pitch. Perhaps because you're afraid of rejection. Don't be afraid of rejection if you are a writer who wants to have a very wide range of audience. Writing a pitch will help you understand writing market. You'll soon begin to work with publishers and know how to streamline your ideas. It will teach you something I learned recently: UNLESS YOU WANT TO SELF-PUBLISH, DON'T EMBARK ON WRITING A BOOK WITHOUT HAVING A BOOK AGENT. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie cannot write better than you, but you can see she soon became a celebrity, why? Because she has agents. It's through agent that you'll have a book deal before embarking on writing. If your pitch can convince them, they'll accept the deal.

Any more advice for Nigerian up-coming writers?

I am from Jos.
