I'm currently facing a similar quandary. Have spent 9 years here in a Nigerian bank but I feel like I've only been wasting my time. I'm strongly tempted to fall back on my first degree (B.Sc Applied Microbiology) and pursue any of the 2yr After-Degree B.S.Nursing programs in Alberta or Toronto.

Did you consider age being a factor in your job prospects after going back to run another school program? Should I be bothered about that?
Age is a factor. How you plan your life here depends on your age.

I'm just curious. What is it exactly, that makes people fail driving tests? The roads seem wide and free. Pardon my naïveté.
Road rules are followed and enforced fully here. Not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign is/can be an automatic fail.

Hello house, Awesome support spirit.

Can the wise ones please offer some words of marble. About completing my express entry.

What are the prospects for a marketing research consultant, some banking experience ? What provinces do I stand a better chance of getting work fairly easily, as I no sabi anyone for Canada, and funds low

I have an msc from a UK school and prince2(foundation), do I need to upgrade by going to doing a prog in a Canadian school? Because all I see/hear is like they don't recognize any non-Canadian certification.

Please help.
1. Seems like the UK won't give you papers and you need to leave before getting deported?

2. Once/if you come to canada migrate straight to Alberta. Worry about prospects later. But it's easy to find a job in Alberta compared to other provinces in my opinion.

3. A UK degree should be recognized here. You'd have to get it equivallent to a master degree in canada first.

Hello Everyone, I am new here, just starting our EE process, hopefully to come over 2018. We are still trying to decide on a province, based on research, this thread, family and friends, we are looking at Ontario, Calgary and BC. I have as a Logistics pofessional in the oil and Gas sector for over 10years but i am thinking of switching careers to either teaching or nursing for better pay and having time with the kids(2 below 5yrs). My hubby is a planning engineer with the same job experience, so which area would be a likely area for us to settle. We are looking for something not too busy, job prospect and childcare costs not expensive. Thanks for the response.
You're being very broad. But I'd choose either Calgary or Edmonton.

Hello beautiful people....really excited to have found this thread. Please can those currently residing in Canada, particularly Edmonton help me out on this issue. I intend to relocate in a month or two with my husband and kids. Due to the high cost of daycare, i intend to stay at home and take care of the kids atleast for some time. So my questions are:
(1)what kind of businesses do you think i can do from home?
(2)what Nigerian products are highly needed over there which i could bring over to sell?
(3) any business idea sha....lol

Thank you.
1. Hair business

2. That market is already over saturated

3. See number #1

@maternal

Just wondering why there seem to be few posts on information on British Columbia.

Do you have any idea what the place is like?
I have never lived there, but it's all personal preference. High cost of living, high taxes, along with constant rain. Not my type of place really.

Vcole, congrats on your landing. I can imagine how hectic it is settling in. God's blessings and safe delivery.

Maternal, which city in Alberta would you advise someone in healthcare to move to? One that has job opportunities, affordable cost of living, good to raise a young family and considerably big with a sizeable population. I heard St Albert is good but I'm not sure how the job situation is.

Salford, good job! Keep them coming.
Go to whichever city can provide you with a good paying professional job period. This notion of "good to raise a young family" is overrated. Anywhere you go in Canada has good schools and social service/benefits for children. Your kids will be fine. With them being young, they'll be fine in the future. You've brought them to Canada where they can prosper with hard work, what else can a parent do ? The parents, who are much older and only have X years to stabilize their future in this country, should start to worrying about themselves more. Your years are numbered to prosper here, your kids aren't. So I say go anywhere that offers you the best opportunity financially. Buy a house, car, etc, and start living. Your kids will adapt. When you get a better feel for the country/ specific area, then move.

Wow nice contributions from you all. Thank you.
I am seriously considering choosing Calgary but people are discouraging us because of the oil sutuation, they claim there are no jobs and a lot of people are even moving to other provinces.
What do you guys think please?
This is how people get into trouble. You should take peoples advice, but also do your own research. Despite the myth, Alberta's economy while heavily dependent on oil, is not the only industry in Alberta. With a high number of seniors on the verge of retiring, a lot of good paying jobs have opened up or will soon. For example, the city of Edmonton is aggressively recruiting for new police officers. Within 3-4 years on the fore you'll be making 94k dollars per year. The Alberta government is hiring multiple positions. These are good paying gov't jobs with benefits and pension plan. The city of Calgary is also hiring and so on. The province of Alberta is more than just oil. These people moving out of Alberta are usually illiterates who were making good money in the oil patch, lost their jobs, and can't compete in the city because they have no or little education. Again do your research. But with Alberta's economy which is still better than most provinces even in an recession, and with fairly low taxes across the board, I wouldn't settle in any other province. That's me personally. Also I work in the oil patch, while it has slowed down, it's slowly picking up. But its not has bad as everyone is making it out to be. imo

I called you and your partner to read that thread but you shamefully declined

A boy was given N200 million contract in this same Nigeria where foreigners like you still think that Internet is a luxury, who will do such for a black person in that miserable cold place where you live

Why haven't you destroyed your Nigerian passport since you think it is a hell hole, you should be ashamed to identify with us, so why proudly state that you are a Nigerian citizen?

You live in paradise yet somehow you can't do without crawling up and down Nigerian forums trying to feed your ego and validate your decision to move permanently. Are you looking for partners in misery, people who have deep regrets about building their future abroad but get high when they hear Nigerians moan because it makes you feel less miserable?

I don't have to give you the history of my life just to make you think I'm qualified to speak on Canada, you can jump into the lagoon if you like, that's your business.

I have made my points and if the OP thinks they are valid then he can make a wise decision by remaining here, multiplying the money and going on vacation when and where ever he feels like(God willing)

You are in heaven on earth yet 24/7 you dey nairaland travel section don't you have places to see there and things to do? At least I am proud of Nigeria but you who hate this country should be on Canadian land forum to chit chat with your fellow country people since you are so jobless.
How do I address this incoherent rant.

Now African countries are as advanced technology wise as the west ? lol. Lets get 24/7 electricity first before starting that discussion. I'm not reading anything. The exception is not the norm. Not only do you have a selective memory, you also have a selective response memory. You claim Nigerians are not running to the west. I showed proof the biggest asylum claims come from Nigerians in Canada. No response. You claim the Nigerian economy is doing well. I showed proof Nigeria relies on remittance to survive. They receive the most remittance than any other African country, and 3rd highest in the world. No response. You claim young men/women are doing big things there. I showed you suicide is now a top 4 leading cause of death in naija and a lot has to do with the poor economy. Ordinary bank manager can't pay back his loan so he kills himself. No response. You claim blacks aren't doing much in Canada, nor do they hold significant political positions. Again I proved you wrong. No response.

I did not proudly state I was Nigeria, I just stated. Since I was born there I think that makes me a citizen? Unless the laws have changed ? Unfortunately I have a lot of ties still there from property to immediate family. It's more convenient to have a passport to come and go as I please, than go through the visa process. I'll actually be there within a month for a burial, and won't need to go through the visa process. See how easy that is ? Other than that I'd get rid of it ASAP. In reality other than going to naija, it's just there collecting dust and its quite useless. An individual stated how they migrated with their child and are now successful. Your defense mechanism and insecurity kicked in. You then proceeded to belittle their accomplishments by claiming their grand fathers are running the country. Whatever that means. If I'm feeding my ego, you're suppressing your insecurity and inferiority complex.

Nobody is asking for a history of your life. Since you're an expert on America, UK, and Canada. What makes you qualified to give such assessments/analysis ? That's all I'm asking. Because you watch a few Hollywood movies now you be professor ? Naija people I swear. Your ignorance is appalling, and you don't even see that people are mocking you. Yes I am jobless, depressed, have regrets moving here, etc. Yet according to you, the weather there is beautiful, youths are making money, flipping 400k into millions, etc. So I ask, why are you here talking, giving advice on Canada,US,UK, basically western countries you claim you'll never move too and naija better pass ? Get off your laptop, internet, your TV,etc. Go enjoy the sun and make all that money. For someone who claims to careless about the west, you sure know a lot about the west and love using their technology. I guess you define colonialism differently in your own head, an alternative way of defining things abi ?

See your life? You can't do without name calling and insulting people which proves that you are an unhappy person despite your claim to living in paradise. If I didn't know about Canada and Nigeria I wouldn't be here. I'm also here to let the OP know the value of what he has here in Nigeria but it's not do or die like in your case.

FYI I'm also on threads on America, UK, infact most other threads like this and if I didn't know about some of these places I wouldn't be there too.

Since you love Canada so much why do you spend so much time in the travel section of nairaland(Nigeria land), shouldn't you be enjoying your country, doing other things besides spending 24hrs a day on a Nigerian forum, responding to every post written by Nigerians who love their country?
You don't know anything about Canada. Your ignorant statements shows that. Go and sit down. You've never lived/worked here full time. Because you had a visiting visa probably years back, spent a few weeks abroad max, and now you're an expert ? Now you're also an expert on America and UK. Do you know how diverse these 3 countries are ? Do you even know how different Canada and US is, despite being the two most similar countries in the world ? So you were born/bread in naija and have never lived abroad. Yet somehow you're an expert on Canada,US, and UK ?

I use a desktop for work, and high speed internet is a norm here not a luxury. With a relaxed work day I can be here frequently. Besides wetin concern you ? I also don't rarely respond. I only go out of my way to respond to you. You're an enemy of progress who knows nothing about the west. People come here for sound advice/personal experience about abroad, hence the title of the thread. So if I can give me personal experience on Canada/Nigeria, which I've lived and worked, while having citizenship of both countries, what's the matter ? Again explain to me what makes you qualified to even give this individual advice ? I will challenge your alternative facts, and false sense of reality when I choose too.

Please don't mention Obama, he is the only president of African decent ever to achieve such who else has done it(his mother was even a white American), I join you in hoping for the best for your kids.
Yes, they are running straight to a Swiss bank with the country's money. What our grand fathers age mates are doing is stealing money, and stashing millions of dollars in drawers or under ground. Nigerian politicians are nothing but thieves who have found a way to steal money legally. Ms Enemy of progress this individual works for a multinational company and is a CA making good money I'm sure. Has secured her kids, kids, kids, future and will soon to eligible to travel the world visa free once she gets citizenship in only a few years after landing in Canada. There's a lot of specious reasoning on both sides of this discussion. Ultimately, the decision will be based on the personal circumstances of the person in question. If it was me, I will migrate. However, I think it is far fetched to say people working for TOTAL want to migrate to Canada. From personal experience and first hand information, what they want to do is move their family to Canada while they remain in Nigeria working. I know more than 50 people doing this. They are not afraid for themselves as they make more money in the oil industry in Nigeria. They just want a plan b for their families. For most of them immediately they lay hands on the Pali, the family moves back to Nigeria. Talk about having the best of both worlds.

My advise will be that if you are struggling in Nigeria, by that I mean you don't earn at least $60,000 equivalent annually in Nigeria, if you have the opportunity to make a planned move to a good country, please go. I am not saying people should migrate illegally as that would be hell on earth. You don't want to subject yourself to that trust me
No they don't. The husband in that situation works in naija and goes back and forth. It makes sense because he'd rather keephis job with TOTAL than start hustling here. After his wife and kids get pali, and he's been going back and forth for some time,he inevitable has to make a decision as the marriage can't continue in that manner. That's when the wife gives an ultimatum. Reside here full time or we get a divorce and you go back to naija. Once you've tasted sanity and a well ran country, especially with kids, you're not going back to that. It'd be contradicting your reasoning for leaving naija if you end up going back any way. Really what's there for a youth? The people you know may be exceptions, but I've met people in Canada who were in such a situation. 99.9% of the time the wife simply won't go back there with the kids. No way. Only to visit at best.

Your perception of reality is distorted and comical. Your alternative facts or accounts of reality is troublesome. You'd fair well in Trump's admin. The average Nigerian isn't doing nothing. Only people doing something there are the few successful business men or corrupted politrickians. In reality the average Nigerian spends all day thinking of ways to leave. The state of the country has deteriorated so much that even medical doctors, bankers, and young students are electing to kill themselves than live in such a jaga jaga country. Can you blame them ? What job prospects does a graduate have now ? Bankers/doctors get paid like crap compared to here. Is it even a worthy professional anymore ? A bank manager can't even repay his loan ? lol. I hear say your "president" don go UK for another medical check up. Imagine a president doesn't trust trained doctors in his own country which he runs.Even Buhari would say "Pidgin-nwanyi stop the madness" if he read all your pro naija posts.

In August last year, a manager with a commercial bank, Olisa Nwokobi, shot himself in Lagos. It was revealed that the 44-year-old bank manager and graduate of Abia State University, Uturu, killed himself because he was under pressure from his bank over loan repayment.

You are just bloviating. A medical doctor in the US bought 2 plots of land in Royal Garden Estate in Ajah for 40M a plot in 2013. Today that same plot goes for 55M up. He is one of 4 Medical doctors I know from the US who purchased property from that same estate. How many Nigerian Doctors can afford it?

A friend of mine went to Uni of California Davies for her MBA. This was in 2012. By 2014 she was done and got a job with Amazon in the US. She lives in Silicon Valley and earns $120k+ a year. Last year she acquired a 4-bedroom condo close to Igbuefon (Lekki Phase 1 axis) for over 25M and she has rented it out. LOL. She is working on a property over in the US which she plans to rent out too and she would do this later in the year.

You have property? You earn 400k? LOL. Stop talking like a child. I can deluge this thread with stories of people I know over in US and Canada who came back and purchased properties that they have rented out and guess what? Most of them are borderline average in the US but seem to be giants in Nigeria because of the exchange rate.

Keep seeing life from one viewpoint and be arguing like you have it figured out. People who earn 1.5M a month in Shell and Total are still trying to relocate to Canada and someone earning 800k in 2021 thinks he is a big boy. It will shock him.
Funny, I've actually seen this. People who worked for Shell relocating their whole family to Canada through the skilled work program. I didn't have the patience but your post says everything I've been saying. The reality is a "big boy" in naija is not even on par with a common person here in Canada/US. Still can't believe this is even a discussion.

People forget the reality of life. Doing calculation that is not realistic. Count yourself lucky if you earn lucrative wages for straight 5 or more years in foreign land or even at your home country. Life is not like that! You cannot budget or predict what will happen in the future.
Most Nigerians aren't sure if their boss will pay them their salary at months end, let alone plan for years. Even abroad where everything is organized, one can't make such a forecast for years, let alone in Nigeria.

All the people that travel to China and other Asian countries for business haven't gone abroad, what of those with established contacts in US and Europe where there import and buy stuffs from have not gone abroad, sorry for you
Very few people are building houses with their own money. Only the few successful business men. The majority are thieves, stealing/looting the country's wealth. Nigeria has a bi-polar distribution of wealth with really no middle class. You're literally either really rich or poor. Who are these "people" ? Definitely not the common man. How many more millions of dollars must the EFCC find in politicians houses before you guys stop playing the "people are doing big things with their money" narrative ? Like a poster said how much does it cost to buy or build a house in naija with the pathetic naira once you have dollars ? Or the unemployed small boy who'd do the labor for 1/20 of the price someone would here because they're desperate for work. I personal have a house there and it's no big deal.

The truth is Nigeria's economy would literally collapse without people from the diaspora sending/investing money back there, since the politicians just steal whatever they can. 35 billion remitted and you don't think a few billions went into real estate ?

"In 2016, Nigerians living abroad remitted $35 billion, higher than 2015. This is the highest in Africa and the third largest in the world. Nigerians are excelling all over the world" She said.

Nobody is calling anybody mad for living in naija. People are too busy to care where one lives. What people are calling mad is not acknowledging the deterioration of the country. How can you fix a problem if you don't admit or acknowledge you have one ? I suspect you're young and don't have the life experience to grasp what you just wrote. Well all define success differently. Like a typical Nigerian, success is not only measured with money. I value peace, security, opportunity, stability, etc more than money. Nobody "spoons" us here. We simply get a lot benefits back due to the taxes we pay and the country's prosperity as a whole. You see stealing is actually illegal here and the government is mandated to spend tax dollars on its citizens to enhance their quality of life. I know that's a foreign concept to you. Lastly, everyone knows Nigeria is for thieves while Yankee is for HARD WORKERS who want their success based on merits not political connections.

Your realtor would have that info. A foreclosed house would go for less, as the banks wants to get rid of it right away. So I know where you're going here. But remember, you usually have investors with deep pockets who usually buy these houses, fix them up, and re-sell or rent them out. So if you think you'll get a nice house for dirt cheap think again. You'll have competition without a doubt.

Aside the language barrier, why are some immigrants not wanting to live in Quebec?

Do people really pay up to $300 for comprehensive car insurance. I know the older the car the higher the insurance or the more accident you are involved in the higher the insurance cheesy (well that's how it works here)
The province of Quebec has a level of autonomy regarding their immigration system. They're paranoid to lose their french language/ID so the province at times is not welcoming to people who don't attempt to assimilate to their language/culture. Montreal is obviously different, but try going to Quebec city. I also think to immigrate there as a PNP, you need to speak french. I could be wrong. But at the end of the day, people go where the jobs are. Toronto and the west coast, mainly Alberta, is where good paying jobs are.

Lastly, such insurance quotes are usually for people who live in Toronto. Insurance in Ottawa and other city's are not that high. In Toronto a lot of south east Asians commit accident fraud which costs the insurance industry millions per year, while Nigeria just steal the cars outright and send them to naija. These cost the industry hundreds of millions per year, and they're not in the business to lose money. So it's passed on to the consumers. These are the type of insurance fraud that happens literally everyday on Toronto streets. Why won't premiums be high ?

If you are single and earning above minimum wage, DO NOT move to Quebec, the taxes will kill you.

If you are married with kids, Quebec is sweet coz there's lots of benefits..childcare, education, kids get to have French as first language, rent, utilities, buying a house is stupid cheap compared to other provinces. The downside is quebec healthcare is not so good coz they have limited number of doctors. It can take a while to get a family doctor assigned to you as well as paediatricians for your kids. The attractive thing is just the cost of living.

Also, compared to Ontario, the waitlist for daycare is not so long just make sure you book preschools as soon as you realize you are expecting.
Just to add further. This is addressed to everyone, not necessarily you. Every province has it's pros and cons. And like I said previously, nothing is for free. While Quebec has the cheapest car insurance, daycare, etc in the country, they also pay the highest taxes in North America. No other state or province pays as much taxes as Quebecois. Furthermore, sales taxes (GST/PST) is close to 15 percent. Whereas other provinces can range from 13 percent to 5. Only two other provinces have 15 percent I believe. I have a friend who's job transferred him from Alberta to Montreal. He has the same pay (100k per year) and in Alberta he paid 25k in taxes, while in Quebec he paid 31k. A 6k difference on income tax. Not to mention Alberta's sales tax is 5 percent (Just GST no PST), while Quebec's own is almost 15 percent. So he pays an extra 10 percent in taxes on almost everything he buys now. 6K less in the pocket, plus 10 percent more on every purchase. You don't automatically save more money living in Quebec because things seem cheaper is my point. Each province has benefits for families with children, so no real advantage there.

But one is supposed to pay tax to the province they are resident in and not one they work in. I read of someone who lives in Quebec but works in Ottawa who was double taxed but got his Ontario tax refunded after he filed a complaint.

Again, other than rent/mortgage being significantly lower in Quebec, i read it also has the lowest childcare costs and car insurance. For a new immigrant, especially one with little children, any money saved would be gold.
I can't think of any jurisdiction in the world where one works there but isn't required to pay taxes. Moreover, you'll be using Ontario's infrastructure to and from work, so why wouldn't you have to pay the province of Ontario taxes ? Lastly people lie. Nobody really knows the case between that person you read about and the CRA (Canadian revenue agency). He must have had a nice lawyer or got tax credit through some sort of business. But if CRA caught him living in Quebec but working in Ontario, he's paying those taxes period. Well all have to deal with rent/mortgage, child care, etc but we're not breaking the law. If you've gotten your PR, remember any illegal activity can get you deported. Is it worth it just to save some money ? Lastly, despite what people think on here, the cost of living isn't really that much cheaper in Quebec.

@maternal @salford

Is it practical for a new PR holder who is not tied to PNP to land in say, Ontario and then reside permanently in Quebec?

I have seen a few discussions/arguments "for and against" staying in Quebec and working in another province. Are there any constraints especially if one decides to live in a Quebec town that shares border with Ontario?
As a PR not tied to PNP you have a right to live anywhere in the country you want. You can live in Quebec for the cheap rent and work in Ottawa, but there could be tax implications. I know people who have done it, and they say you can pay both Ontario and some Quebec taxes. I'd use someones (a friends) Ottawa address as my main address for all government documents, then try to rent a place in Quebec without signing a lease or having any paper trail. This includes utilities. Perhaps pay the landlord a few months in advance as an incentive ? But if you can't do that just live in Ottawa and pay the extra 300 dollars or so in rent. It's not worth it. When Canada Revenue deals with you, you'll know what I mean.

Well done guys!

I actually heard from someone who moved to Canada on PR that she got free household stuff from the the govt or some agency.she landed in Edmonton.

Pls I have 2 questions.

1. How soon can one access childcare benefits as PR? Is it after 18 months of residence? If that is the case one needs to plan properly cuz if childcare is about $1000 per month and house rent is about same. That means your settlement funds will finish in no time.

2. I'm wondering why most immigrants hardly land in BC considering the fact that it has the most friendly weather. Are Jobs very scarce or what might be the reason? From my observation most people land in Ontario and Alberta.

I'm wondering what major factors to consider in choosing a province and then a city, it's quite scary seeing as Canada is so massive.

Please share your thoughts, thanks!
I think Salford answered all your questions. But just to make this clear again, THE GOVERNMENT OF CANADA DOES NOT GIVE YOU ANYTHING FOR FREE. If you get something for "free", you'll eventually pay it back someday (taxes). If not, you won't get a penny from them. The government of Canada is NOT a charity organization. It operates like a corporation with the Prime Minister as the CEO, and citizens as the shareholder, which the CEO (PM) is responsible for. They're actually blood sucking, who'd charge you interest even if you owe them a penny. Yes that happened to me.

I'm also up for any good info as regards getting affordable furniture. I was/am hoping for a warehouse or auction kinda store with really good furniture cos the prices I can see online for new sofas and stuff are a bit pricey. @fusion23, I wouldn't buy a used mattress though, I don't think you should.
Also, what would you recommend for a bank account? taking into consideration monthly fees, credit card annual fees and limits, etc etc. What bank would work best for a newcomer?

Congo made some recommendations. Personally I feel all the 5 major banks are all the same. They just rape you differently. I'm personally with TD, I find they have a branch everywhere in the country which is very accessible. They also open late and in odd hours which I love. You never know your work schedule. If/when you get a credit card, do not mess up your credit. You'll be sorry. Your credit score/history is your life line in this country. I am not joking.
