TheCongo2:
Is Canada better than the US for real? Do you live in Canada?

You can't make a strong point without providing any data when you are comparing the two countries.
For instance, you indicate that a permanent resident in Canada can apply to join the police force and get the job.
But wait a minute, what is the immigrant or visible minority acceptance rate in the Canadian police? Is that rate better than the one across the border (United States)?

I have been living in Canada (French and English) for most of my life and I describe myself as a French-Canadian. I have got my share of experiences in regard to discrimination in Canada. Two years ago, I got a HUGE payout in a court settlement on the ground of employment discrimination. Subtle racism or discrimination is something that minority and immigrants go through EVERY SINGLE DAY in Canada. You would be living in denial if you deny this fact. I can give you some links to Canadian government agencies website dealing with this subject that would raise your awareness of the issue.
If you mean in terms of race relations, Canada is statistically better.

One question pls, if the fake passport gets dictated at the airport here in Nigeria, will you be arrested? what happens if the found at the point of entry in Ca or US, will one be deported immediately or will you able to claim asylum at that point.

Thanks
I don't know about other countries but once in Canada the people who did it would dispose of the passport once they touch Canadian soil, then claim asylum. You'll get legal council if you can't afford it, a court date, and papers to work until further notice. Then you go from there.

Which is it?...you made a phone call and got a passport?...or you believed if you made a call you can get a US Passport in a week? .... and you're still dodging my question... what year did these people you know pass Immigration with fake passports? People desperate to travel are following. .... so clear this up for them before they dash out and acquire fake passports based on what you said.
I know people who have made the call. Again I have papers no need for a fake passport. The last 2 people I know who came with a fake passport was 4 years ago. Come out with your point already.

Personally, I think everybody that dropped a comment here on this topic is right cos na who wear shoe know where e dey pain am but for this particular topic I will use myself as a case study.
I worked 8-9 Years in naija but I was not fulfilled with the system and I became scared of what will happen to my kids with the present economic situation in the country. I have always loved to travel to Canada or USA cos of personal reasons and I didn't like Europe much unless I intend to study more or play football. I got info about FSWP, I fasted for the first time in my life and involved my cousin who is a priest and today we are enjoying Canada.
But to be honest I will advise anyone SUFFERING to leave Naija regardless if you have plans or not but DONT do DRUGS. You must always have a way out. Naija is WORST than hell fire. I don't need to be mild on this issue cos I spent nothing less than 30 years in naija and I have spent few years here I have benefitted in so so so so many ways.My daughter gets monthly support from the govt.I got a scholarship to study power engineering here. Inshort , there are so many benefits that I will not want to mention here. If you jump from hell fire to enter heaven and you no make am na to fall back to hell fire wey you dey before but @least make e be say you jump.
It's what I've been saying. Imagine if you didn't jump ? Everyone's destiny is different. On a side note I assume you're in Alberta ? Once you get your steam time and you're completely certified, you'll be making a lot of money as a power engineer, especially as a 2nd/3rd class.

Lol...answering questions with question!...yes...I'm dead serious.
When I lived in Toronto I was able to make one phone call and I'd be able to get a US passport within a week. These 419 boys are brilliant. If they can defraud bank systems, defrauding immigration is nothing to them. Of course I've never asked the method behind the fraud because I have papers and don't want/care to know. But immigration fraud is nothing new here, though the government fights back hard. Just over a year ago they've been some cases which made national news. And these are the frauds which were detected.

Hmmm.... they don't have the cash to enter legally... but have it to enter illegally?...is it now that cheap?... and to take another gamble with your hard to get cash with agents? Whichever way...huge sums of money would be involved. .. so the bottom line. .. you need to plan well.... look before you leap.
Yes. Do you know how the immigration process works for poor people ? Its not always black and white. You pay the money to file, some may pay an agent to help them with filing as they're ignorant about the process, they'll most likely get rejected. Then you now pay a fee to appeal the decision, they'll still most likely be paying that agent with the appeal process, etc. Or you can save money and purchase a fake UK or France passport, hope you don't get detected and make it to Canada or whichever country for example, tear the passport once you've arrived and go to immigration and claim refugee. I know several people who are now citizens here through that process. Had they used the latter, they'd still be in naija constantly appealing their cases spending more money.

So I am not misunderstood, Lemme give you further insight to what I am referring to;
I had a female colleague of mine who got an opportunity to go to Italy, fully sponsored by a Pharmaceutical firm- of course she was fully qualified for the position as she was equipped with a B.sc in Biology and an M.sc in Bio-Engineering... would you believe she was denied a visa flatout at the Italian Embassy despite all her legit documents and strong claims to professional advancement, why?? Because she was assumed to be a potential prostitute seeking an advanced schenghen visa to ply her trade flexibly (Mind you, this was not in Nigeria). Although the case was later battled out by the hiring coy, however the experience was quite an embarrassing one for this lady.
Now, you get my point? ... Genuine Aspiring young Nigerian visa applicants, are faced with this challenge of overcoming huge Negative assumptions by embassies, because of other Nigerians who just jumped to these countries blindly and became a nuisance(Even if there must be Nigerian ashawo's and drug pushers et al abroad, must they be in phenomenal numbershuh?). This just shows Nigerians are more likely to become a Nuisance , due to this hussle type mentality, that encourages blind migration.

So basically as a Nigerian that falls under a youthful age group, you are very more likely to have a denied visa application, regardless of your reason. Does that fact not bother you?
I am not saying "nobody should'nt go abroad", I am saying "if you don't have an aim or productive plan for going abroad(if your destiny is not abroad like you said), then don't go and block the road for others who do" ... period.
#Dropsmic
#PicksUpMic,

Nigerians are stereotyped everywhere for usually negative things. But of course it's always easy to blame the poor and allow the rich who are usually the cause of all this, to go free. People will say these poor people better stop putting negativity on our name, but won't say anything to the politician who's looting our cash, or his pikin now abroad who's enjoying this stolen cash, knowing full well the reason these woman are abroad prostituting is because they're not getting their fair share of the national cake. So they do everything in their power to migrate to a more humane country which will give them a better standard of living than their fellow Africans, they get stuck doing unfortunate jobs to survive due to the lack of legitimate documents, and now they're the ones causing problems for Nigeria ? Are people actually this insensitive towards the poor ? Haba.

It will be easier for the elite to get visas because they can show they have strong ties to the country.... wouldn't abscond and let their businesses fail et c. But that doesn't mean others can't get visas as well. One good way is to travel to other countries... even in Africa itself first to establish a travel history... which would indicate you just love to travel and visit other countries. If US or Canada or I talk is your first choice... then why wouldn't the VO think you are trying to go to hustle? My friend is a nobody... and had no problem getting a US Visa using this method... travelled twice and returned. ..and would have no problem getting a visa to Italy, Canada, Australia or any country ...because of the resume.
I can't speak for the US but I live in Canada and I'm currently going through the immigration process. It's been 3 years since I've started filing for my cousin in Abia. They're 3 main ways people get into Canada, specifically from naija. Marriage, international student, and skilled worker. Each of those 3, you must have a certain amount of money in your account. Well as for marriage the person filing for you must be making a certain amount of money per year. Lie, Lie, go travel everywhere in this world, if you don't meet Canada's requirement ($$) you're not getting that visa. These governments aren't charity cases, it's a business. And the typical Nigerian does not have the money to file the application let alone have the minimum amount liquid cash which the government is asking for. So the average Nigerian there have no choice but to enter illegally and hope they can legitimize themselves once they're here somehow.

I agree and I wasn't trying to insult/ put him/her down. But I feel if you're going to tell someone not to do X, you should then give them another solution. If I tell the arm robber to stop robbing people, then I better be able to tell him/her where they can go get a job. It's easy to judge someone when you're not in their shoes, but it's hard to give a realistic solution.

I respect your opinion.... but isn't this what Op is warning about?.... just grabbing the opportunity to go and when you get there you would make a way?... the same that soooo many have done then ended up trapped abroad...suffering....hoping to return home no matter the situation at home?....women become prostitutes etc?...that was not part of their plan. Nothing wrong in going abroad... I think everybody should get the opportunity to.... just look well before leaping.
You have to realize OP's opinion are one-sided and ignorant. To begin with everyone's destiny is not the same. If you apply for a job and don't get it, does that mean I shouldn't at least apply ? But what OP fails to mention is that unless your parent(s) are wealthy business people or politicians, you're not likely getting a visa. So what do these people do ? Stay and continue to sell pure water, while making 1 US dollar per day with no real future or hope ? I'd rather take a chance at abroad. Even if I get deported, I can live with failure, but I cannot live with not trying. Secondly, nobody is trapped abroad unless they commit a crime. These people are doing every possible not to return to Nigeria, because believe me, these countries would gladly deport them back to naija. Lastly, everyone is putting down these prostitutes like naija no get prostitutes and it isn't the main line of work for unemployed young woman in the country. At least the ashewo's in Italy are collecting Euro's oppose to naira. In this situation nobody should look before leaping, because the worse thing that can happen is that you land back in Nigeria.

OP very nice post. But Nigerians in diaspora are not helping matters, these folks flood nairaland and other Nigerian forums painting a picture of their lives as if they all live in Eldorado abroad.

The worst part is that they seem to forget that not everyone actually wants to migrate abroad, some love their lives here no matter how white you try to paint your life abroad. They tend to talk down at some of us back home. Imagine someone opening a thread about recently relocating to US and in almost all his posts he writes about how backward we are here and people applaud him yet all he eats there is Nigerian food.

If it was really Eldorado as these diasporans intend to paint it what are so many of them doing on here and why do they keep returning home? If there is nothing to miss about Nigeria.

I still believe our country will be great, I don't like Buhari's policies and I thank God that he would not be here forever. The best way to live here is to be your own economist and financial strategist, good luck fellow Nigerians
Enemy of progress stop frontin. If I offer to give you my Canadian passport you no go take am ? Story, story. So because one chops naija food abroad they can't call out their government back home? You don't think in 2016 the "giant of africa" should have basic amenities for all its citizens like running water or constant electricity? So that's being forward still baffing with bucket in 2016 ? People return home because they still have family there. If it wasn't for my family there is would have burned my useless green passport years ago.

That being said this thread is legit. Have a plan and attempt to legitimize yourself once you land abroad. And attempt to come to Canada or America before those European countries. They're less racist here. But hustling without papers still gives you more opportunities than living in naija with papers without a doubt. Unless you're Dangote or psquare, anyone who say they'd rather remain in naija than get a Yankee passport is either ignorant or is lying period.

Please I'm curious. How does a PR holder get into the oil sand industry? I know it's probably work that involves a lot of muscle. Is it as easy as getting the factory jobs that new immigrants often start with?
@Shina, I died laughing. I've actually see Moses on a regular basis up north here.

My Aussie people, are you allowed to approach the Kangeroo ? I'm sure they'll attack.

@Red, a PR holder can get any job a citizen can with the exception of some gov't jobs, and some political office. You'll have to get a valid Canadian drivers license, and some oil-sands safety tickets. Then you can apply for almost any jobs, except for the ones which require a red seal trade of course. There are a lot of Africans in Alberta and who work up north in the oilfields, so your chances would be better if you network. I'd keep a small circle of African friends, because the majority are shady and will stab you in the back, especially Nigerians. Anyways here's a web site that usually posts the most recent job ads with the salary at times. It'll give you an idea the type of jobs available and what sort of license you need.

Comparing the cost of living in Canada (Toronto/Vancouver) to Australia is very bias. Those two cities have the wealthiest people in Canada, especially in their downtown core. Comparing a mid-size city without their wealthiest residents would be more realistic. Also I keep on hearing those who live in Australia say their social benefits are better than Canada's. Yet I haven't seen any facts or better yet I haven't seen a benefit you guys have down there that we don't here. Universal healthcare ? Got it. Unemployment benefits ? Got it. Maternity leave/allowance ? We get up to a full year with 70-100 percent of full pay, and parliament is trying to make it a year and a half. Monthly allowance for a woman with a new born (its called baby bonus)? got it. Interest free student loan until you get into the job market ? Got it. And if you're from Ontario the provincial government will even pay for your university depending on you or your parents salary. Being able to claim certain things on your tax return especially if you're low income ? Got it. Honestly what's so amazing about Australia's social benefits that Canada doesn't have ? This may impress Americans only.

Furthermore, we've established Aussies (Can I say that ?) make a few thousand more per year, but at the same time their cost of living is also higher. Even if costs of things are similar in Canada (which is not) we can just cross the boarder into the states where things are dirt cheap. Another North American perk. And I've shown articles which has proved Canada has the wealthiest middle class. So I'm curious to know how Aussies have more disposable income ? I'm pretty sure the money parents would save in Canada not having to pay for their children's University education would trump (no pun intended) any disposable income an Aussie would have over a Canadian. The price of a post secondary education is getting out of control. I just want to know where this perception is coming from. Now when it comes to one of the highest paid, and an utter idiot making good money, Canada has to be one of the top country for that. It's not uncommon to see people with a 8th grade level education make 6 figures in the oil industry. To begin with not much people would agree to work in the oil-field for under 6 figures. That's even the starting rate. Cleaners make that let alone engineers or people with a red-seal trade.

A few years ago the average yearly salary for a oil-sand worker here was 130k USD per year. That's around 173k Canadian per year. I use to clear 140k easily when I use to take OT. Now with a pikin and family obligations it's around 105-110k per year. The older you get, the less you care for OT. I have a degree which has nothing to do with my work and I have no trade. Even within the city, ordinary transit drivers can make 100-130k per year. The city of Calgary is looking for a receptionist at 37 dollars an hour. That's like 76k per year without OT. These jobs only require a high school education where you can train a retarded monkey to do it. But I've met Nigerians in the oil industry with an education. That's having a red seal trade, engineering degree, or some sort of 1 year diploma. They don't make less than 150k to 300k. I've met so many Africans who came here as a skilled worker, got their PR, rushed to the oilfields, and 4 years later have bought a house and are living good. Establishing yourself and owning a house in a new country within 4 years is impressive.

Bandeco cool down. I apologized to the man already. Again both places are amazing to live in and I'd live in either one. No need to get personal, but I'll address your rant small. I simply can't address everything.

1. I'm sure OP plans to get citizenship eventually, hence opening him to both markets. Bureaucracy ? You get a job offer, flash your Canadian passport at the border with proof of the job offer, and you're on your way. I've done it before. I have many Canadian friends who are now living/working in the states. Some even got citizenship. Famous Canadians (Drake,Bieber, C.Dion, etc) go to work in the states all the time. You're a Canadian citizen with no criminal record, you get a job offer, that US work visa is yours period. Our military, financial institution, etc work with each other across the boarders all the time. Plus several states economy alone is twice the size of Australia's/New Zealand economies combined. Like a California for example. I'd rather just wait to get Canadian citizenship and test my luck in Canada or the US. And Canadians and Americans can visit each others country visa free for up to 6 months.

2. The average salary in Canada is above 43k per year. Perhaps you should show where your getting these facts. But like everyone knows, it's not always about how much you make, it's your cost of living that makes the difference and if your country has a good trickle down economic plan. Either way Canada does have the world's wealthiest middle class.

http://www.newsmax.com/t/newsmax/article/696626?keywords=wealthiest-middle-class&year=2015&month=10&date=16&id=696626&aliaspath=%2FManage%2FArticles%2FTemplate-Features&oref=www.google.ca

3. Unemployment rate here is usually record based of facts which don't always tell the true story. Such as how many people eligible for EI (Employment insurance) who are on it divided by the population eligible for it. Some thing of that nature. But the thing is a lot of the whites here are lazy. I've seen people who worked in the oil patch and was making 40 an hour, turn down a 20-25 dollar an hour job because they refused to work for less than 40. They're technically unemployed though due to their choice but they're not really. During the oil boom when oil prices were 100 USD per barrel you had Americans jumping the board coming up here to work. I landed a 6 figure job within a week. Everyone knows not much economies were as healthy as Canada's during that time. Even with oil at 46 USD or so per barrel I'm still pulling 6 figures easily. You make it seem like Australia's economy is immune to what's happening in the world today. This uninterrupted economic growth, are we talking about McDonald's having job openings, or good well paying jobs with benefits ? Because young graduates in Australia are complaining about lack of jobs, just like everywhere around the world. But where else can they go ? New Zealand ? I'd rather the US, bigger market.

http://theconversation.com/graduating-into-a-weak-job-market-why-so-many-grads-cant-find-work-45222

3. You know what ? Over 1.1 million Canadians are millionaires. If you add the tax cheats who go to the Caribbean islands to hide their money to avoid paying taxes, the famous Canadians who claim US residents to avoid being taxed twice in the US and Canada, that number would be much higher. And 25 thousand of them become millionaires just last year. And we're talking US dollars not Australian dollars. Besides what does that prove ? Is OP a millionaire ? And Canada is ranked 2nd to quality of life.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/credit-suisse-wealth-millionaires-1.3867306

https://www.google.ca/amp/globalnews.ca/news/2801864/canadians-quality-of-life-ranks-2nd-globally-according-to-2016-social-progress-index/amp/

4. Better safety net ? I know a Yoruba girl from Lagos. She has 3 kids by 3 different fathers and they all left her. This woman has not worked in a decade. For all her 3 kids, due to her lack of income, or no income I should say, she's getting free housing. She got free daycare, free healthcare coverage, and free prescription drugs and dental care since she's low income. She also gets welfare cheques and baby bonus cheques each month (govt gives you money for having a baby). And at the end of the year, due to her being low income, she can write off any tax she paid during the year and get a full refund from the government. And just recently parliament concluded internet and cell phone services are essential services which the poor need. So yes, you guessed it, she'll be getting that for free if she isn't already. And last year the province of Ontario said any household where the or both parents are making 50k or less per year, the government will pay for their university. And yes again you guessed right, her kids will be going to university for free. If Australia offers better please let me know so I can tell this woman so she can leave here and go leach off you guys.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/education/free-tuition-but-for-whom-charting-ontario-students-fiscallandscape/article28925277/?service=mobile

5. I'm pretty sure Federal taxes are similar in Australia. But provincial or sales taxes differ in each province. In Alberta it's only 5 percent sales tax. And after making 6 figures last year, I wrote off a lot of things, plus I have a child. The gov't paid me back 10k. That's after making 6 figures. If you live within your means and have a good accountant to help you with your taxes, you can have good disposable income here. Besides where would one go with that ? New Zealand ? Over lets says Miami ?

6. Most Americans don't have passports and a lot have never left the US, let alone be able to travel all the way to Australia. They're very ignorant bunch down there and their middle class is in rough shape. I suspect those coming to Australia are the elites or upper middle class. Either way, you don't want them there believe me. They'll attempt to turn that place into one of their states. But Canada and Australia have similar social benefits. So what's the point of that statement ?

7. The city OP is thinking off going too is ranked as the best place to live in the world by economists. And the weather situation is overrated. OP already said he doesn't care about the cold, and Canadians here actually like the cold and don't care about the outdoorsy stuff. It's actually like 7 degrees now in Toronto and it'll be around that temperature throughout the week. The whites are already complaining because they want the weather to go really below 0 and for snow to fall so they can go skiing. Not to mention we get 6 months of amazing weather to do all that stuff per year. Plus Florida, Texas, the Caribbean islands, etc are 2-3 hour plane ride. In North America we have options. And theirs no fear of a spider filled with poison biting us in our homes.

Again both countries are amazing, lets leave it at that. I also plan to visit Australia one day. I heard Canadians need a visa is that true ? At times I envy the warm weather during our cold winter months, can't lie.

Either way both are amazing countries. Can't go wrong with either one. Many would love to have this issue.

I don't understand what you mean by the bolded.. Can you expantiate more? How does " having access to US market" first of all what type of market are you referring to? And how does the market increase his chances of landing a job
No disrespect, but I don't feel you know enough about this topic to be giving him advice. At least not regarding Canada. Canadian citizens can legally work in the US if given a job offer through the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). I have a lot of friends who had issues finding a job in Canada, looked to the states, and got hired by an American company. All they have to do is show up at the border with the job letter offer and a working visa will be given to them. Of course the US gov't will have to make sure no American can or is willing to do the job. The US also like Canadians (they view Canadians as Americans) and recognize their education and work experience. Having access to the worlds biggest economy is huge. I don't even think Australia's economy is bigger than Canada's. New York, California, Florida, etc is filled with Canadians.

As for both economies, both Canada and Australia have an unemployment rate of around 6 percent give or take. And for Canada's sake, this is due to the sluggish oil prices. But if or when it picks up like in the past, who has a better economy wouldn't be a discussion. Canada has the world's richest middle class, due to a sound trickle down economic plan, and was ranked 2nd in the world only behind Finland as having the best quality of life according to the social progress index. That's 2 spots ahead of Australia with 16 million or so more people. Lastly, while both Canada and Australia have similar social support system such as universal healthcare, the province of Ontario (where this man will be) will be paying for individuals children who come from a household income of 80k or less, University/College tuition. Other provinces are looking to follow suit. Saving the money you'd spent sending your child to University is huge. And I've heard goods costs more in Australia.

I love Australia don't get me wrong. I see it as a warmer Canada and both countries are great. They stand for certain things I feel the US doesn't. But if this man wants to migrate for economic prosperity, which is why we left naija to begin with, I'd come to Canada. Because like I said, having access to the US market is huge. Plus North America seems more lively, and you're a few hours away from Europe.

Going to Canada gives you more options in life than Australia because Canada is next door to the US. Both countries are good and offer some of the best quality of life for their citizens. But having access to the US market also increases your chances of landing a good job. At the end of the day, being self-sufficient and making is what should drive your decision.

Very funny how people just jump to conclusions and label others without knowing the exact reasons why they choose to take their decisions. So, because he earns N4 million annually, he can't make a choice to relocate if he so chooses?

There are people who earn multiple of that and still want to get out of this shit-hole called Nigeria, where nothing is guaranteed. A country with insane leaders who make stupid and archaic policies that can destroy all you've built up over the years.

Guy, wish you Godspeed with your plans.
Those guys don't want others to progress. Nigeria is the place to be ? I had a good laugh. Stability, security, and a functional country overal is more valuable than money. Even people with money are trying to relocate their kids outside of the country.

I don't know if anyone has seen this, but Canada's immigration minister will make it easier for skilled worker and international students to get PR and stay in Canada. The rule takes affect come Nov 17. I felt this article relates to this thread.

These types of tone and comments should be unacceptable in this forum. It tends to discourage people from expressing themselves and asking questions here in order to get the needed help for fear of lash backs and comments like these. All questions however stupid or unusual they may seem should be welcome here without the harsh tone and comments and comparisms. Otherwise the very purpose of this forum has been defeated. This is my opinion and observation. Oga Citizen, your tone may not have been intended to offend anyone but Pls let's be guided.
It's reality. Should one not be honest with the man so he continues to wonder what's going on ? What am I saying or doing wrong ? Aren't we all grown here ?
