Science/Technology › Re: Some Scientists You Probably Don't Know But Probably Should. by MathsChic(f): 11:12pm On Dec 20, 2015 |
Teempakguy: exactly. perspective matters a lot. because eventually, every single thing under the earth can be regarded as a discovery. you did not invent this post of yours. since the combination already existed in nature. every original thought you've had can be explained as a "discovery" of a brain pattern that already exists in nature.
in a similar fashion, everything can be explained as an invention.
consider string theory. would you regard it as a discovery? or an invention? Yes, it's a matter of perspective after all. String theory is still disputed among scientists and is strictly a theoretical framework. Until actual strings are observed, I think it'll stay an invention. On the contrary, Newton's laws are actually statement of facts. Wouldn't you agree that an object will continue forever in motion in the absence of friction? That's not modelling, it's a fact. The inverse-square formula may be an invention or some kind of modelling, but the basic laws surrounding the formula are not inventions. At least in my opinion. |
Science/Technology › Re: Some Scientists You Probably Don't Know But Probably Should. by MathsChic(f): 4:52pm On Dec 20, 2015 |
oglalasioux: Very brilliant observation. No phenomena is actually invented. Men discovered and harnessed them into inventions. Example is electromagnetic waves and radio waves. It's out there set up by nature. It's for us to discover and put to use. Good. And even though we can't see certain wavelengths, we see their effects (like gravity) and we have mathematical tools that accurately predict them. |
Science/Technology › Re: Some Scientists You Probably Don't Know But Probably Should. by MathsChic(f): 4:51pm On Dec 20, 2015 |
Teempakguy: hmmn . . . how do i explain this . . .
Newton didn't invent gravity. of course. he invented the "theory of gravity." that's the point I'm trying to pass here. "theories." are explanations or unification or descriptions of something else entirely. as we all know, newton's theory of gravity doesn't actually work well. instead the newer theory, of general relativity, is being used to describe gravity. That alone tips off that it is an invention. since it can be replaced and/or upgraded. a discovery, such as the discovery of a new element, is not subject to things like that.
a theory is very much like an actual tool, such as a hammer or a screw driver. only it's composed of ideas and equations. since we don't refer to tangible tools as discoveries, i doubt we can refer to theories as such.
in fact, most theories are born out of constant thinking, prototyping, and testing.. in very much the same manner as real tools. and they fail sometimes. like real tools . . . the list is endless. I actually understand the point your are trying to make, but still I disagree. Of course, newton did not invent gravity. And going by your logic, he also did not invent a theory of gravity, since he was wrong after all. If he invented the theory of gravity, then what would you call relativity? Isn't relativity the acceptable theory of gravity? What Newton "invented" is a series of explanation, mathematical descriptions and formulas which somewhat explained gravity in a classical way. Einstein came along with his own "inventions" which were also a series of advanced mathematical expressions that refined Newton's theories. So, you are right a bit in saying they invented some tools. However, all of what Newton did is true and existed already in nature, only waiting for someone to come along and spot them. The three laws, at least. And to be fair, Einstein did not really alter any of what Newton did. He merely modified them. So, while Newton may have "invented" tools with which to interpret gravity, he did discover some set of laws which gravity obeyed and which are absolutely fundamental, so fundamental there is doubt they would ever change. Some would say they are as real and fundamental as your element in the periodic table. It is in that sense we say he "discovered". Nevertheless, I think the interpretation, whether invent or discover, comes to from what perspective one is looking at it. |
Science/Technology › Re: Some Scientists You Probably Don't Know But Probably Should. by MathsChic(f): 3:37pm On Dec 20, 2015 |
Teempakguy: Actually, he invented it. Just like newton invented calculus and jon von neumann invented game theory.
all theories are tools with which we understand nature. and tools are invented. not discovered. No, I disagree. Observe, it's called the "theory" of relativity. Scientists don't invent theories. They study and observe nature, then they come to a conclusion that explains the situation somewhat. Others can come along in the future to refine the theory. Would you say Newton "invented" gravity? No, he discovered it. Gravity has always existed even before Newton. So has relativity. Calculus is a tool, so you are right in saying that was invented by Newton (and Leibniz). It's a beautiful tool with which to analyse results. It existed in some variation in "limits" which had always been known to earlier scientists. |

Teempakguy: Quick! who invented the theory of relativity?
You smirk and reel out his name. Albert Einstein of course. that . . . irrevocable Genius. well, no problem then. Einstein did not "invent" the theory of relativity. He discovered it. |
Education › I Hate Being Smart! by MathsChic(op): 12:21pm On Dec 20, 2015 |
Sometimes I just hate being smart. Being smart, getting A's in school will make you top your class and later provide you with a decent to very lucrative job that's just going to assure your future. You won't be poor and you'll live a comfortable life. But sometimes, I just can't help but wonder at how boring and mundane everything eventually becomes. On the other hand, not getting all the A's and not topping your class will throw you out there, challenge you to dream big and force you to come up with a living that could probably break bounds, making you into a household name. Linda Ikeji, Toke Makinwa, Folorunsho Alakija, Oprah, these are people who certainly didn't get the best grades in school or studied the best courses at university, yet they shape and influence the polity more than the best graduating student in Electrical Engineering from the set 1985 in Unilag would ever do. And who's that best graduating student anways? I bet no one knows today! I so hate being smart! I wish I was a regular one that would have had to create something for herself. |

whirlwind7: I totally feel you on this one. I have two friends currently residing in the US. Both of them came back to Naija to pick wives. At this moment, both of them are divorced. I can't call this a coincidence. The legal and family system in US does not support the sort of traditional African belief of a fully submissive wife and children. Yes, a discontented wife can set his husband up, and that might have been the case in this instance. But we are not sure. The court had decided, and had given it's verdict. Nothing short of a confession from the wife and daughter that he didn't commit this crime, would set him free.
One thing missing is, the defence lawyer could have made the effort to find out what led to the parents changing schools for the girl. the claim was that it was because she was molested. Now, the mother claimed that wasn't the case, but that the school was expensive. If investigation revealed that the mother lied in this instance, it will spoil her credibility with the jury. A very sad period for Mr. Ngene.
If the legal system in Naija were this strong and functional, our society would be a much better place. As it is, rapists and pedophiles often get a slap on the wrist and set loose, to look for their next victim. Demmocrats: Hmmm at the end this man might even be innocent, there are so many Jezebels roaming planet earth looking for who to devour. cold: I know what the man is being incacerated for is not outside the realm of possibility but i seriously doubt the man did it.two centuries and a half behind bars is no joke especially for a crime one did not commit BrBakreez: I would have love to say few things but am trying to be careful since I do not know what happened before the trial. I smell somethings though but if truly the man is innocent God will vindicate him. How do you guys manage to think these things without even looking at the evidence? He had the chance to prove his innocence, but I guess the Nigerian in you guys will never really let you see beyond your noses. Sometimes, I wonder less that Nigeria is in the quagmire it is in when people like you are around there. Merely from the child's statements, it is very apparent that the man might have done what it's claimed he did. Not just in the mode in which she delivered her testimony, but also considering that if she was lying, she would have been jailed instead. The man was arrested while "he was trying to go to Nigeria to bury his mother". Isn't it just evident that he was trying to escape justice? Wouldn't an innocent man stand to sort himself out? And isn't it so convenient that he said she was raped in Nigeria, where the law's hand of justice will not reach? And shouldn't he go out to identify "the neighbourhood boy" he claimed was raping her when he saw them? This man appears as guilty as a boy caught with his hand in the soup pot, and it's just okay that he is getting what he deserved. |

I can't even trust them to raise my child without my supervision. My finance is on the average, my family meets her needs. As for my heart, I can't even keep it open, I can't even think of ever loving anybody again, not after my experience, Most men are just pure evil in disguise. My daughter gives me hope, I can't hand her over. Thanks again. We make mistakes in life. But we shouldn't punish ourselves for these mistakes. Your story really touched me. I'm trying to imagine how you feel now deep inside, but I'm sure my best efforts can't accomplish that. In the end, you don't let other people's actions dictate the results of your life. You deserve to the happy, to have a man to care for you, just as every other lady desires. Don't let your previous relationship be the reason why you shouldn't experience this happiness. |

brokenPearl: Thanks so much, he's not taking responsibility currently. He wants custody, he says if I want him to cater for her, I should hand her over (which I will never ever do). This is a delicate one. But do you still have a lot on your plate? Like school? Does he appear like someone that can take very good care of her? If that's the case, you could consider giving him custody and working out a reasonable arrangement that will have you see her and share almost equal time with her. Sorry, but if you still have a lot to achieve and are not financially okay, you may cost her a good life simply because you want to keep her. It's best to ensure the better decision is made in the interest of the child. However, if he doesn't appear like he could take care of her well enough, then you have no choice but to do it. Is your financial status okay in this area? Keep your heart open. I'm sure you find another guy who will take the best care of you. |

There's no excuse, I agree, I've made a mistake, I wish I knew a good couple who wanted a baby and are willing to finance it, as difficult as it sounds, I think I could give the baby to them. There no way I can keep the pregnancy, im not fit, psychologically and financially, not with everything i'm going through right now. If you can't keep the baby, you should consider abortion. Pro-lifers here will scream at you, but you should know they'd probably do the same if they were in your situation. Only the person wearing the shoe knows where it hurts. Abort it, raise your other child well. Talk to him about taking responsibility for the child. If he refuses, you might be left with no choice but to do it yourself. However, maintain a positive outlook on life and things will surely turn out positively differently for you. Godspeed. |

Pro-biafrans have been on NL for a while now and no one cared about what they did because they mostly stuck to the proper way of doing things & respected the peace here. But you'll agree with me that 99% of Pro-biafrans on NL right now have absolutely no regard for proper conduct and I consider Seun's outlawing of the whole topic to be out of necessity. So in the end I think we only hold slightly different views on how total the ban should have been. IamLEGEND1: Actually, YouTube does ban users and regulate videos. you know about the whole katy Perry-dark horse video saga right?
some Muslim groups around the world took offence to a certain part of the video and started an online petition. the video was later removed,re-edited & then reuploaded.
the same goes for pórn videos, upload it on YouTube and you'll be banned, repeat it and ur IP address is going in the blacklist. And believe it or not, some people consider pōrn to be art.that's not even mentioning the tonnes of other random videos pulled down or re-edited by the regulators of those sites.
Call it whatever you may,but that is also an infringement on freedom of expression. Your right ends when you infringe on another individual's.
And I'll say they've infringed on a lot of people's rights here.
All things considered,I see ur point and I recognize the amoral nature of the situation. .. But the truth is it is all a little too idealistic. Look at the champions of democracy:the U.S and the whole thing about monitoring of mobile phones, emails, webcams, laptops etc, that is like a Goliath of rights infringement compared to the tiny David here but a significant amount of US citizens don't care because they realize the necessity of it. We live in a world choked full of grey areas and this is one of them,we have to learn to accept that. Certain things are a no-no on social media. P.orn is one of them. Of course, that should be regulated. So is racism. And every online discussion will surely have some elements of this, and thus should be regulated. I understand your argument (and also like the way you argue, by the way), however I still don't accept that biafra talk should be outrightly banned. Of course, it can be regulated, with the spammers, trolls and haters warned or banned but not the subject itself, which is what Nairaland's owner has done. Discussions about biafra, while it may awake passions and vitriol, is not in itself bad, nor should it be a no-no. That's just all am saying |
