Truthisunique2:Did Pope Gregory tell you this or you read it from the edicts of the church? Maybe you should look up the origin of the calendar and when 1st January came about. |
Truthisunique2:So, by this logic, anything invented by someone is attached to that person's background, even if the purpose of the invention is not towards that? Someone is credited as having invented the clock, a time-piece that all peoples across different traditions and backgrounds rely on, to mark time. Why isn't the time-keeper (clock) being seen in relation to the inventor's background? |
bolabadmus38:So, what's the first day of the Christian calendar? Please don't say 1st January. |
I don't claim to know the origin of the 12 months of the year yet, beyond aiding to have a unifying time marker (separate from religion, I believe). This has stirred my curiosity to look it up further honestly. However, I'm Catholic for instance. And the 'New Year' in the Catholic Church is never 1st January: it's the first Sunday of Advent. It ushers in the new year in the church calendar, which starts with awaiting the coming of the Lord. And the counting cycle to set such marked feast days like Ash Wednesday, which counts to the 40 days to mark Easter, begins. Likewise, I'm Igbo. The New Year is marked by the feast of the New Yam festival. Just like our weeks have 4 days, representing the 4 market days. |
This is a very good, thought-through writeup. Thanks for sharing. It'll definitely help if implemented. |
femi4:It's not only Mary though. All the Saints and angels. And no one is mandating anyone really. You mustn't ask Mary or a Saint to pray for you when you're praying. Just like no one is forcing you to tell your people to remember you in their prayers. |
femi4:About Holy Mary pray for us, again have you ever asked a friend to remember you in prayers? So someone who birthed The Lord is not fit to? About bowing to images? The best way I can think of it is humanity, respect and attitude towards 'symbol of authority' Why do you stand at attention when singing the national anthem? Why do you beat your chest when vowing in the National pledge (that's an vow if you all don't know), why are some Europeans made to bow in the presence of their kings and kiss their rings? Why are people made to stand if an import at person e tees the room and do not sit till the person does? Do you know that's respect bothering on worship? Why are children thought in school to bow and genuflect n greeting in the presence of authority or a sign of respect? Why are offices made to hang the picture of the ruler of the time, say the president, the governor? Is that worshipping them? Now, why do some people don't. Simple, because they either don't believe that's a display of respect or they don't believe the person, or country the action is channeled towards is not deserving of it. The human mind is powerful and spiritual. It processes these things. And how you consider a person to be an influence in your life, how you revere that person will determine the level of 'respect', you accord him/her. Every thing you know that connotes reverence, you'll do. To the person watching you, you'll be seen to be worshipping the person, but in your mind, you're a coring respect to whom you think it's due. Issueof images: why do you connect more to certain people and/or places if you're watching videos, pictures of them which remind you of things you did together or your memories of the place? Why do you even take pictures? If you think of these things as a human being and not on the lines of religion, I believe they make more sense. Christianity shouldn't be a religion, it's a way of life. Seeing it as just a religion reduces it to mere operation. No Catholic Church will ever demand its parishioners to worship images. I know a Rev. Fr. that always cautions people because truth is some people may drift and that there is because they're seeing it from religious angle and not due to the connection. |
femi4:Truth though is that in the early years of the Pentecostal faith, at least in Nigeria that I know of, Pentecostal churches didn't practice communion. I remember how as a child, many years ago, Catholics in my class were taunted by Pentecostals about communion. You can ask your Pastor when it commenced in your church, there's nothing wrong with knowing these facts about your church. After all aren't we all Christians, as we say? Another is about written short prayers. I know how much Pentecostals mocked Catholics for reading out short prayers, say how can it be a personal interaction with God if you're just reading literature written by someone else? Over the past 15, 20 years or so, we've now seen Pentecostal devotionals include short prayers too. At first they called them different names, like reflection or something else, now they're written 'Prayer' clearly. Again, how some Pentecostals mock Catholics for asking the Saints to pray for them. But several Pentecostal pastors believe in Saints and quote some of them in their preachings. And we all know the Bible supports asking our neighbours to pray for us, so the Catholic angle is if intercessions from us, mere people still struggling for grace will help, how much more people who are believed to have reached the ultimate destination? Why do Pentecostals celebrate Good Friday, Easter and other not-fixed days the days Catholics do? Do you know how those dates are arrived at? It's counting, my friends. In a couple of weeks, we'll enter the Advent season (also marking the beginning of a new church year), count a few days from Advent, we'll enter ordinary time of the year, a stipulated number of weeks after that, we enter Lent, 40 days after that we celebrate Easter, I think 6 weeks after that is Pentecost, then a few weeks after we enter ordinary time of the year and count a marked number of days again. And the cycle continues. Every denomination has their grey areas, I was born a Catholic but still trying to understand a few of the doctrines. But truth is that most of what Pentecostals churches criticize the Catholic church about, they are beginning to practice and coating them so that it's not so obvious they are. This isn't bad, there is only one church. That is the goal. And at the end, doctrines and practices don't make us heaven, it's our souls, the purity of our hearts. We should aim to be better Christians, that's what the Church is meant to do for us. Let's be more Christian than just our denominations. |
But these have always been their colours. Just that from what I see here, the design has changed. Yellow and black seem the most popular commercial commuter colours. And maybe because most states in the USA and India use it too, so a very familiar sight from watching lots of movies growing up. |
9jatriot:It's not him being Fulani, Umar Musa Yar'adua was Fulani and I think everyone knows that he was adored East of the Niger. |
I'm seeing a different spelling of this initiative |
I think she looks more like Oge Okoye |
Edithfavourite:See as he resemble Virgil Van Dijk small for this picture |
Haaa. Ahn ahn. This is worrisome. Poor children. North kwa? Where food is supposed to be bountiful. What could have happened? I'm very puzzled. This is a disturbing piece of news. Malnutrition kwa? N'enu kita? In this day and age? Is there a war there that the rest of the country hasn't heard about. There were reported cases of flood across the country so I doubt it should be that it destroyed crops to that magnitude since such hasn't been attributed in any other region, yet. Or was there and it wasn't broadcast? This is concerning and really bad. Chukwu zoba umu ya. |
Yes. Today the holy Mother Church celebrates the feast of Christ the King. This feast Sunday marks the last Sunday of the year. By next Sunday, a new (liturgical) year begins. Dinwenu anyi bu Eze! Nke di ebiyebi! Igweeeeeee! By next Sunday, Advent begins. And we start counting again to set all the marked days in the Holy Mother Church. That's how my people, you get to know which day of that year that Lent will start, and Easter Sunday will fall on, and other days of obligation that don't have fixed dates. Advent is the beginning of a new church calendar. It means we have entered a new year. I won't forget how a parishioner once greeted me "Happy New Year" in the first week of Advent many years ago, and how all his colleagues around him expressed amused surprise and laughed at him at how eagerly he couldn't wait for the new year to start already, in the first week of December. He answered them back with a smile that the person he greeted (me) understood him. And of course, I understood. |
Sirjamo:Are you serious? Why does a different rule have to apply to them? Why can't they save up money and buy ranch land for themselves? Governments build lockup stalls and charge traders rent for these stalls. And here we are, government is about to give these lots free 'stalls' because they killed people? So you're saying the hardworking person was stupid to have studiously laboured, denied himself and saved up to pay for land while someone else gets it on a platter? Being petted and treated with kid gloves! WHY DOES A DIFFERENT RULE HAVE TO APPLY TO THEM? |
Are you kidding me? Is someone BLOODY KIDDING ME? Is someone trying to tell me that these guys deserve to roam about fattening their cows on my land and my farm produce, without paying rent for ranch, and will still end up expecting me to BUY the meat from their produce? Meaning, they paid ZERO to process their market wares and I'LL PAY to use that which destroyed me. Whereas if I have a shop, I'll pay rent, pay dues, pay for security, pay TAX, before someone maybe buys off a single item from me. How does the government help me in that instance? This is very painful. There was indeed a country. |
Ah, every time time the homily revolves around home values. He spares no ox, he doesn't sugar-coat the expectations from the two parties involved. He holds family highly, matrimony is a sacrament after all. |
The holy mother church draws our awareness to the sins of omission and commission. The rich man's sin is clear - he committed the sin of omission. Do not neglect the people around you who need your help. On a broader scale, don't neglect to do what you ought to do, to better the society and humanity. Nothing is spared. It affects our everyday way of life. Be it loving your neighbour, doing your bit to the good of the society and humanity, dutifully fulfilling your civic rights that aren't sin: things like making sure you vote right to keep away the people who'll come to scatter the nation, not being inconsiderate and driving or parking your car in a way that it'll inconvenience the next road user. Our salvation and belief should tell in our everyday way of life. We should reflect through our lives that we are Christians. Everything you should do, do it no matter whose ox is gored. After all, it was said in the Bible, if you do good only to those who do good to you, what's the extra different thing you're doing then as a Christian? Because the average Pharisee (average human being) does the same. Yes, the Bible preaches 'do unto others as you'd like them to do unto you'; therefore can you imagine that world where no one is looking to hurt or con the next person? A saying goes thus, 'the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil, is for good men to do nothing.' |

Ohammadike:MASSOB though wasn't an Anambra thing alone just like IPOB, so no single State Governor has power over them. You need to realize that IPOB rose in an era of social media, so has many more followers than MASSOB ever did, both home and abroad. And more followers, increases the weight of influence. And Governors are in a tight position here, how much can they support their people -seemingly against the nation- even when they believe in their cause, without going against the constitution that swore them into power which they swore to uphold? |
Zonacom:If they're all towing the same line, don't you think it just shows really how the people there feel rather than making it about one man. Having said that, I think it's a bit unfair to Obiano how Obaze tackled the matter. IPOB is an Igbo matter, not an Anambra matter. So saying he couldn't control them in his own time is not really in his hands. |
I'm not sure who's the one telling the lie here but Gowon, why did you never say this all along? Never said it when Ojukwu was alive? Now you come and tell these tales over a dead man? |
Her baby is sooo cute. |
Mstchewwwwww ...and I'm PROUDLY IGBO. Who needs Presidency for development? Right now, it's just for bragging rights. My 2 Kobo though |
Wow! |
I can't escape that my mind is a mess |
lumydee44:Thing is though, how many governments did do it even though it was what they ought to have? Who in Nigeria that travelled to Lagos from the South doesn't know what that road was like, especially Ore part of the road? |
darlingtonIIV:In England, I think yes. |
khattab02:You wicked ehnnnn ![]() |
rapthugx:Thanks |
thefakestan:Yes, it is. This is like AFCON but strictly for players based in Africa. |
