BusinessCBN To Sack Bank Directors With Bad Loans by maximunimpact(op): 1:07am On Nov 27, 2017
Bank directors with non-performing loans (NPLs) are to quit or be sacked, according to a new Code of Corporate Governance approved by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Director, Bank Examination Department at the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), Adedapo Adeleke, said the new code was instituted to address the rising cases of insider bad loans, which not only represent a conflict of interest, but are against the prudential guidelines for the industry.

He described corporate governance as an essential pillar in financial system stability.

Banks’ assets have depreciated in the last three years, with provisions for NPLs hitting N856.9 billion, due to the drop in crude oil prices. A large part of these bad loans is owed by bank directors and are in most cases unsecured.

Besides, the economic recession showed that the financial industry still harbours weaknesses in governance, as seen in insider non-performing loans, unreported losses, huge exit packages for directors, over-domineering executive management, contravention of regulatory/prudential guidelines and lending limits, poorly appraised credits and weakening of shareholders’ funds, among others.

Adeleke, who spoke at the weekend in Kano during a media workshop organised by NDIC for finance reporters, said the Corporate Governance Code for Bank Directors is signed by all bank directors at the point of their appointment, and has a section that empowers the banks’ boards to remove any director with insider non-performing loans. That section says: “If you are having non-performing loans, you will be removed. It is already being enforced except that the regulators are not being dramatic in publishing the names of affected directors,” Adeleke said.

Speaking on the theme: Curtailing the Growth of Non-Performing Loans in Banks: The Role of Regulators and Supervisors, he said that delay or non-payment of workers’ salaries by government and private companies is worsening the level of non-performing loans in the industry. He said the rate of non-performing loans is in excess of 20 per cent as against the five per cent regulatory threshold.

The NDIC director said when salaries are delayed, workers who have borrowed from banks, especially through consumer loans, always find it difficult to pay back. “If the economy is improving, and government can help to fulfill its responsibilities, including prompt payment of salaries, the level of non-performing loans in the industry will drop,” he said.

“If people working in companies that are troubled borrowed from banks, it is important that the loans be provided for when their employers can no longer pay salaries,” he said.

He however, expressed confidence that the current rise in crude oil prices will impact positively on the banking industry and businesses and help reduce the rising cases of bad loans in the industry.

Adeleke said the establishment of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria II (AMCON II) to buy up non-performing loans as being suggested can only be private sector led. “If there is going to be AMCON II at all, it is going to be private sector-led,” he said.

He said the CBN Prudential Guidelines allows banks to review their credit portfolio continuously (at least once in a quarter) with a view to recognising any deterioration in credit quality. Such reviews, he added, should systematically and realistically classify banks’ credit exposures based on the perceived risks of default.

NYSCWill Noun Students Be Mobilized For 2017 Nysc Batch “b”? by maximunimpact(op): 9:35am On Oct 10, 2017
THE national youth service corps (NYSC) has announced preparations for the 2017 Batch “B” have begun, yesterday the service held The 2017 Batch ‘B’ Pre-Mobilization Workshop which commenced with a training session for Data Processing Officers of Corps Producing Institutions.

This is coming ahead of the main interactive session later today during which stakeholders will map out strategies for a hitch-free administration of the 2017 Batch ‘B’ Mobilization exercise.

This brings us to one question students of National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has been asking; will NOUN students be mobilized for 2017 Batch ‘B’ program? Well let’s look at the facts as it stands now; NOUN students has never been mobilized for service in the past and the institution and the Nigerian senate has passed enabling laws to allow NOUN students serve.

In trying to find out the fate of NOUN students for 2017 Batch ‘B’, it is highly likely that NOUN students will indeed be mobilized. This is because the current senate list of tertiary institutions on NYSC portal includes National Open University of Nigeria.

When the time come for participating students to verify their names in 2017 Batch ‘B’ senate list, NOUN students can also be listed.

BusinessDangote Dumps South African Cement Firm Deal by maximunimpact(op): 12:21am On Oct 09, 2017
Dangote Cement Plc, Nigeria’s most capitalized quoted company and Africa’s largest cement producer, at the weekend stepped down from its much-publicised bid to acquire the share capital of PPC Limited-a South African leading cement firm.

In a regulatory filing at the weekend, Dangote Cement board of directors stated that it has notified PPC board of directors that it no longer has an interest in acquiring the South African firm’s share capital.

Dangote Cement had last month confirmed that it had initiated a bid to acquire the entire share capital of PPC Limited. It, however, noted that the acquisition talks were still at the preliminary stage and the transaction remained a potential one, contrary to reference to the talks in some quarters as ongoing.

Established in 1892 as De Eerste Cement Fabrieken Beperkt, PPC is a leading supplier of cement and related products in southern Africa. It has 11 cement factories in South Africa, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Rwanda and Zimbabwe.

With annual capacity of 11.5 million tonnes of cement products, PPC’s materials business comprise Safika Cement, Pronto Readymix (including Ulula Ash) and 3Q Mahuma Concrete. Its footprint in the readymix sector has grown to include 26 batching plants across South Africa and Mozambique.

Also, PPC produces aggregates; with its Mooiplaas aggregates quarry in Gauteng, having the largest aggregate production capacity in South Africa. PPC Lime, one of the largest lime producers in the southern hemisphere, produces metallurgical-grade lime, burnt dolomite and limestone.

PPC is closely linked to the growth and development of South Africa as it has produced cement for many of the country’s most famous landmarks and construction projects.

Two global rating agencies, Moody’s Investors Service and Global Credit Ratings (GCR), recently rated Dangote Cement high for its financial strength and corporate outlook. In rating reports, both global rating agencies described the outlook of the Africa’s largest cement producer as stable.

Moody’s assigned three respective high ratings to the cement company, including a first time Ba3 Local Currency Corporate Family Rating (CFR), Ba3-PD Probability of Default Rating and Aaa.ng National Scale Rating (NSR).

Global Credit Ratings assigned long-term and short-term national scale issuer ratings of AA+ (NG) and A1+ (NG) respectively to Dangote Cement.

Assistant Vice President and Lead Analyst for Dangote Cement at Moody’s, Douglas Rowlings, said the ratings reflected Dangote Cement’s “strong standalone credit profile and track record of demonstrated financial support from a larger and more diversified parent, Dangote Industries Limited”.

Chief Executive Officer, Dangote Cement Plc, Onne van der Weijde, noted that the ratings highlight the financial strength the company had achieved through unwavering focus on the profitable expansion of its business.

BusinessTSTV To Start Full Commercial Services November 1 by maximunimpact(op): 12:11pm On Oct 07, 2017
Telcomm Satellite TV (TSTV) says its newly inaugurated pay TV, TSTV Africa, will begin commercial operation on Nov. 1.

Its Managing Director, Mr Bright Echefu, made this known while briefing newsmen on Saturday in Abuja.

Echefu added that TSTV would launch its services with about one million decoders nationwide.

He said that at least 5,000 decoders TSTV would be released to the public next week for free, adding that it would use the first set of decoders with one month free subscription to test run its services.

“Commercialization of our decoders will resume officially on Nov. 1 and by that time, every part of Nigeria would have TSTV decoders for people to buy.

“We are releasing about one million which can go round and our target for the first quarter is one million units.

“In every quarter we will bring one million units and we are targeting four million units within the next one year.

“I can tell you categorically that some decoders will be released next week for Nigerians to test and we are going to cover the 36 states of the federation.

“These decoders are going to be free and it close to 5,000 units to test and that will last for two weeks,’’ he said.

Echefu disclosed that the delay in releasing the decoders to the public was to ensure that dealers were properly scrutinized so that the decoders do not fall into the wrong hands.

He explained that the decoder would be sold to Nigerians at a subsidized rate.

According to him, the landing cost of the decoder is N28,000.

“We don’t want a situation where someone would pick our decoders and dump them somewhere.

“That is why we are very careful because of competition.

“We have received well over 6,000 applications and it has been overwhelming processing these people; but so far, we have been able to accredit more than 748 dealers and we have received applications from more than 3,000 of them.

“That is why we have not commercialized our services even though we are the ones losing because we have enough decoders to cover the whole of Nigeria.

“But it will be unfair with all the money put in for us to give decoders out and those decoders don’t get to the end users,’’ Echefu added.

TSTV boss said that measures had been put in place to ensure its sustainability in terms of services, pledging that the organisation would be envied by many Nigerians in the next ten years.

He disclosed that the organisation currently had a total of 250 staff on direct employment, while it expects to that indirect employment would hit 10,000 at take off.

According to him, TSTV has improved on its transmission facilities to overcome weather challenges while expressing happiness over the acceptance by Nigerians.

He praised the Federal Government for the three years tax relief granted to the company to encourage more investors to come to Nigeria.

He said that the company would consolidate on the new tax policy to grow its business in the country and recoup its investment.

On the alleged copyright infringement on two international content providers, Turner Broadcasting System and beIN sports, Echefu said the company entered into partnership agreement with every concerned organisation.

According to him, TSTV will air CNN and beIN sport channels.

He commended DSTV for creating value for Nigerian content.

The new satellite pay TV was inaugurated on Oct. 1 but is yet to be viewed by the public.

BusinessForeign Remittances For Nigeria In 2017 To Hit $22bn – World Bank Predicts by maximunimpact(op): 6:57am On Oct 05, 2017
Nigeria will record foreign remittances inflow of $22 billion in 2017, higher than the $19 billion recorded by the country in 2016, this is according to World Bank prediction.

FINANCIAL WATCH learnt that India retained its top spot, with remittances expected to total $65 billion this year, followed by China ($63 billion), the Philippines ($33 billion) and Mexico (a record $31 billion).

The World Bank, which stated this in its Migration and Development Brief, obtained on its website wednesday, estimated that remittances to low- and middle-income countries was on course to recover in 2017 after two consecutive years of decline.

The Bank estimated that officially recorded remittances to developing countries were expected to grow by 4.8 per cent to $450 billion for 2017.

Global remittances, which include flows to high-income countries, were projected to grow by 3.9 percent to $596 billion.

According to the World Bank, the recovery in remittance flows was driven by relatively stronger growth in the European Union, Russian Federation, and the United States.

“As a result, those regions likely to see the strongest growth in remittance inflows this year are Sub-Saharan Africa, Europe and Central Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean. In the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, fiscal tightening, due to low oil prices, and policies discouraging recruitment of foreign workers, will dampen remittance flows to East and South Asia.

“In keeping with an improving global economy, remittances to low- and middle-income countries are expected to grow modestly by 3.5 per cent in 2018, to $466 billion. Global remittances will grow by 3.4 per cent to $616 billion in 2018,” it stated.

The report showed that global average cost of sending $200 remained stagnant at 7.2 perncent in the third quarter of 2017.This was significantly higher than the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target of three per cent.

But Africa, with an average cost of 9.1 per cent, remained the highest-cost region, according to the report.

It showed that two major factors contributing to high costs were exclusive partnerships between national post office systems and any single money transfer operator (MTO), which stifles market competition and allows the MTO to raise remittance fees, as well as de-risking by commercial banks, as they close bank accounts of MTOs, in order to cope with the high regulatory burden aimed at reducing money laundering and financial crime.

PoliticsAn Open Letter To Buhari On How Okowa Is Running Delta State Without A Budget by maximunimpact(op): 5:57pm On Oct 04, 2017
An open letter to Buhari on how Okowa is running Delta State without a budget
4th October, 2017
Mohammadu Buhari (GCFR)
President Federal Republic of Nigeria,
Aso Villa,
Abuja.

AN OPEN LETTER TO MR. PRESIDENT, FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA MOHAMMADU BUHARI (GCFR) ON THE ISSUANCE OF A BLANK BUDGET BY THE DELTA STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY TO THE GOVERNOR OF DELTA STATE.

The above subject matter refers;

Mr. President, it is with heavy heart distress and grief that I write you this letter, Mr. President; I am an Indigene of Agbor, Ika South L.G.A of Delta State, former member of the House of Representatives, former Presidential Liaison Officer to the Senate and SSA to the President, former National Vice Chairman South South of the PDP and immediate past National Deputy Chairman of the PDP. This is to bring to your notice the hydra headed corruption and malignant impunity that is currently dancing and celebrating in the Delta State House of Assembly.
Mr. President, ten (10) members of the Delta State House of Assembly informed me (in strict confidence; that their names and families be protected) of the high level of fraud that is currently ongoing in their legislative House where they ply their trade as Law makers. According to them they were emboldened when they learnt that I had left the PDP on 16th September 2017 and they felt the urgent need to now confide in me that I have left the PDP.

The very important issue at hand is that the members confessed to me that up till 3rd day of October they have not seen, sighted or read a copy of the Delta State 2017 budget.

The Hon. Speaker of Delta State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Sherrif Oborevwori signed only the last page of the budget and returned same to the Government; the Government then fills in the blank arbitrarily and apportions appropriation at will.

The Chairman of the Appropriation Committee of the Delta State House of Assembly and the entire members have not sighted the budget break down and estimates as the conventional practice, the actions of the Speaker with the active connivance of the Government amounts to issuance of a blank 2017 budget and appropriation for Delta State.
Mr. President, I dare any member of the Delta State House of Assembly to produce a copy of the approved budget estimate signed by the Chairman Appropriation Committee, the Clark and the Speaker, let any member display same on any website.
Mr. President, I had the opportunity to speak with Prof. Sam Oyovbaire on issues of impunity and corruption in Delta State. For your information Prof. Sam Oyovbaire presented Dr. Okowa to the Urhobo nation and Okowa was accepted by the Urhobos due to the person of Prof. Sam Oyovbaire.

I told Prof. Sam Oyovbaire that he has a name and integrity to protect, that he should disassociate himself from the mess going on in Delta State.

I therefore in all humility call on Mr. President who is credited by the International Committee not to own a single house and bank account outside Nigeria, who won the presidential general election against an incumbent President due to your anti – corruption credentials to kindly deploy your good offices to cause a thorough investigation into the fraud currently in Delta State through the Blank Budget and appropriations issued by the Delta State House of Assembly by the anti graft agencies.
Mr. President, I am 58 years old, a soldier of truth, if I cannot stand to defend my people on matters of this nature and injustice, then I will not be fair to my God and conscience. It is most excruciating and painful that our hard earned State resources are being stolen in broad day light.

DEMANDS

Mr. President, I humbly on behalf of the good people of Delta State plead and solicit of you to passionately cause and direct the relevant Government Agencies to investigate the above allegation against the Delta State House of Assembly.

I want to assure you, as the 2019 general election draws near, that over two (2) million votes are at stake in Delta State, your reward for addressing the fraud in Delta State shall be total unequivocal support for you and your Government and your Great Party the APC.
Mr. President, Delta State is dying. Kingly direct the EFCC, DSS, ICPC and Code of Conduct to investigate.

Kindly accept the assurances of my highest esteem.
Truly Yours,
Dr. Cairo Ojougboh

TV/MoviesDelay In Sales Of TSTV Decoders Worries Nigerians by maximunimpact(op): 7:45am On Oct 04, 2017
Some Nigerians on the social media has expressed worries over the inability of TSTV Africa, the latest pay TV service to start sales of decoders and services in Nigeria after it launched October 1, the delay has also created room for rumors with the latest smear campaign alleging a letter purported to have been sent to the Nigeria Copyrights Commission by beIN, a TV content provider, and titled “Illegal Pirating of beIN Content”, alleged that TSTV planned to offer its content illegally.

The purported letter was stamped to have been received on September 29, two days before the official launch of TSTV.

Although TSTV has disclaimed the letter and dismissed it as fake; “We are not unaware of the messages circulating the social media regarding a letter from Bein Sports and Turner. We inform Nigerians that the letters are FAKE and were prepared basically to bias Nigerians. Kindly disregard the documents because they are frivolous”.

FINANCIAL WATCH gathered the disclaimer has not done enough damage control as many prospective users have started second guessing the reality of their offerings and services. A Facebook user, Uwomano Ejeneha said “This is how failure begins. After all the hype and waiting for your October 1st launching all we could get was a shabbily put together ceremony that was transmitted live on AIT. And up till this moment, no information as to where to get your decoders. And even the few displayed dealers on their website can’t even say for sure when the decoders would be available. Confused people”!

Another disgruntled prospective TSTV user said; “Thought TSTV had everything in place before the initial July 25 2017 launch date was postponed to October 1st. Now that you have finally launched and unveiled TSTV after two months your prospective customers and accredited dealers that have patiently waited for TSTV decoders and accessories are yet to physically see what you decoders look like not to talk more of experiencing it. I have called some of your accredited dealers but have nothing tangible nor assuring to tell me”.

“You guys can launch and not unveil for tactical reasons but the moment your have unveiled the product at the launch, immediately it must be available for your prospective customers to buy without stress”.

“TSTV has been consistently inconsistent since I heard about them last June and I warn Nigerians to wait for more disappointments from TSTV”.

“TSTV promised July 25th but failed”

“TSTV promised over 200 channels to start with and now it’s 70 channels”

“TSTV was launched and unveiled but TSTV decoders are no where to buy even accredited dealers were told to wait endlessly”

“TSTV have refused to let us know TSTV-owned offices and outlets in different states in Nigeria (except the head office in Abuja) but rather they kept on updating the list of accredited dealers who can’t give reliable information about TSTV”

“I’m anxiously waiting for more TSTV disappointments because I’m convinced there’s an issue or problem going on and this put lots of question marks on their professionalism”.

“What I feel is the latest problem TSTV is battling is that their competition(s) have taken the fight (over the right to show some channels) to another height outside Nigeria or Africa and launching without those channels may kill TSTV on arrival”.

“TSTV themselves have given so much room for all the misinformation, misrepresentation and doubts about them. “A stitch in time saves nine.”

“I’ll wait for other people to use and comment on TSTV or for TSTV to exhibit their brand at the 2017 International Trade Fair before putting my money and time on TSTV.

“I wish TSTV the very best as they’ve come to send DSTV packing from Nigeria…”

The Pay-TV service which officially unveiled October 1st was expected to start immediately by Nigerians but the delay in sales of decoders has raised a lot of doubts as seen above.
