increase their amnesty allowance, so they will keep quiet for short while.
Never seen militants looking so well fed and robust like these lot.

Another issue I see here is, this is to be implemented in a month shocked shocked shocked Absolutely ludicrous. Another bad move by CBN. If I were keeping a dossier for each of their ill advised decisions, I would have ran out of space by now.
in a haste to sound intelligent and discredit SLS you forgot to read the article properly.

As anyone told this man that:

-They don't use card/debit cards in Nigeria yet

-The market place don't have POS (point of sales) machines

-The gas station don't even accept ordinary vouchers

-Without usage of debit cards, the plan is going to distort the economy and cause anomalies.
not very correct.
Business › Re: CBN Imposes Limits, Penalty On Cash Transactions, Again! by mbulela: 2:44pm On Apr 29, 2011
i hope we will be able to discuss this issue intelligently, bearing in mind that SLS is not as stupid as some persons potray him on this site.
I am all for a cashless society and the moment you spend a few months outside and come back home, you feel fustrated carrying 10s' of thousands in your pocket just to have a few drinks and give your loved ones treats.
the earlier mentioned issue of increasing POS terminals must be pursued vigourously and the terminal interfaces made open.
you can count on your fingers how many outlets on VI accept cards and even some of those ones are always telling you that 'the machine is down'.
Imagine what the case is on the mainland and in Ajegunle?
secondly, the reliability of ATMs must be seriously investigated and addressed.
a case where it takes 8 days to retrieve your money that a 3rd party ATM deducted after not dispensing cash and having this scenario happen repeatedly can and will not be acceptable when you are fining folks for withdrawing huge amounts of cash.
thirdly, who wants to go to the bank repeatly when it takes over 45 minutes to withdraw in the banking hall?you would rather withdraw a lot and keep it at home.
the queues in the bank are growing larger and larger and something must be done.
all these monstrous buildings serving as bank branches are crass.can't we have simple bank halls replicated around the corner to reduce everyone gathering at a spot to admire your fine interiors and waste half of our days?
do we really need these monstrous buildings that look like covens as bank branches?when the service inside is c rap?
is it not a waste of resources?

IMO! Soyinka is simply stating the obvious. Most discerning minds know the Violence in the North was conceived by Buhari and carried out physically by those he never bothered to send to school during his time as a Military Dictator and PTF chairman. He deliberately sow the seed through his campaign up north.Ordinarily, the violence if spontaneous as the former Dictator want us to believe,it would have commenced right in the states where he claimed rigging occured i.e SS and SE.But alas !it started from where he won, thus using his illiterates supporters(Almanjiris) he never bothered to send to school to kill harmless Nigerians.
i respect your view but this view is too simplistic to be accepted in a modern world.
Using body language and all that to ascribe violence to a man is not acceptable in a court of law and should not be used in this case.
This violence will continue even after Buhari's demise unless the govt grows some balls.
This violence is a product of a lack of balls by the government.
maybe an amnesty programe can be arranged for the northerners.

this project is a very long way from being completed.i mean very long way off.
Amaechi is trying but there is a lot to be done and the contractor handling the Agip roundabout road project should be jailed for life.
Those living in that Agip axis ought to march unclothed to govt house.
the state of roads on that axis is awful.
The quality of road projects in the state are very questionable.
you wonder if after paying egunje there was little left for the contractors to do good jobs.
an exception is the Oginigba road.well done.
Politics › Re: Soyinka Says Killings In The North Plannned, Fingers "buhari" by mbulela: 8:45am On Apr 29, 2011
All this long grammar will not solve the problem.
The govt should thoroughly investigate this killing, Boko Haram,Jos killing, independence bombings and Bayelsa bombings.
Thoroughly investigate them and arrest EVERYMAN behind them.
until justice is metted out to those behing these killings, they will continue at the slightest provocation.
As long as the govt plays politics with security, more of these will happen.
blaming Buhari is simplistic and silly.
Asking People to lynch vote riggers cannot be the cause of this and other killings in the north (and the rest of the country).
This GEJ govt acts like an interim govt.it seems to lack the political will to take tough decisions.it acts like its hands are tied by political jobbers.
if those responsible for the above named acts are decisively dealt with no almaraji will be easily excited to kil and maim.forget all that 70 virgins story.
GEJ must stop fiddling around while the country is burning,ACT NOW.

I see no reason in CPC going to court.
Buhari should just ignore the less than credible courts and join like minds in keeping this govt on its toes.

There is only one thing all the discussions point to and it is the northern elements working with the SW poltiicians, if i will strecth it further CPC working with ACN again for 2015. Can this happen ? or will ACN do it alone building strucutres in the north and CPC will come down south building structures.

I think it would have been better if both parties fuse into one to form a more national party with a national outlook. However personalities of the leaders of both parties and interest might never make this happen. What then is the way foward ? Which direction should we be working for 2015 on the national stage. ACN has no storng presence in the north and likewise CPC in the SW . This is what i think we have to ponder on because the opposition spoke for 3 years preceding 2011 and all talks of mega party led no where. This is not time for the blame game but trusts have been eroded and i am wondering how this will work out for the future.
this is where my pessimistic nature creeps in.
i doubt the sincerity of purpose of all these men and women.
that is one sad conclusion that just won't let me be.

I dont think the people in NASS ACN, CPC or PDP will do it unless the people power is used in pressurising them to do so. We have to stage continous protests at the national assembly for this to be done. As a matter of fact it is not just their salaries but the money that is allocated to them in the budget is what has to be slashed.

They can cut the wages by 80% and pay them selves in other ways. We have to stop them from allocating above a certain amount of money for themselves
i am actually referring to all payments in every guise.
if you are and i can see the disguise, is it difficult for ACN and CPC NASS members to see it and reject it?
do they also need us to stage protest marches for them?

I supported Buhari though even though the lapses (politically) were there. There are some assumptions the BB ticket made which are very wrong

(1) They assumed generality of nigerians hated corruption, many Nigerians are not even aware what corruption was or how bad the situation was. majority don't even know the damage PDP is doing to them.

(3) They see things as black and white, this kind of idea is only fit for the mosques and churches, it doesn't work in the real sense. You just have to make compromises and deal with even people you don't like.[/quote]for number 1 alone, you deserve a cold pint of bitter  wink
i will only withhold that pint because that comment is a sad, painful reality.
will this majority of Nigerians learn after 4 years of FRESH AIR?

number 3 is also very instructive.if they must make progress they must work on this.the crux of the matter is where to draw the line.
By the way, i think they are making progress.Bakare would have not chosen to work with Buhari ordinarily.but more progress needs to be made and comments need to be more statemanly.

On the other hand, do you think the ACN senators could possibly sponsor a bill that would
1. Cut the monthly package of senators by a third? Or even a fifth?
2. Reduce the size of government as advised by T. Danjuma?
3. Will they push for FOI to be passed?

I know the PDP Senators will NOT do this, ACN has a good number of seats and could get things rolling.
in the absence of success for such a bill, what even stops them from refusing such a soulless monthly salary for the duration of their term as NASS members?

Guys and gals,
lets get one thing right;the only person expected to have no emotions in a political discussion is a political biographer (a political biography written with bias is useless).
You can't but be emotional about your political persuasion.
the issue is wheh you allow your emotions to override reason or make you resort to insults.
every view that has been expounded in this and similar discourse has been tainted by emotions but that does not make any of them wrong.
What has made some wrong is the faulty foundation or outright lies on which they have been built.

Stevogue:
@@@@@@@It pains me to say this, but for the first time I am inclined to agree with Tinubu that Jonathan is an unstable fisherman! Please tell the president that no one runs the government by appeasement or settlement. He cannot reward Ohakim with the sack of the minister because Ohakim claims to have delivered him 98% in Imo. A bogus claim! On 4 occasions since the minister was appointed, Gov. Ikedi Ohakim has lobbied for his removal. Just last week, at the tarmac of the Sam Mbakwe airport, Owerri, while Jonathan was on his way to Abia state, Ikedi pressured for the sack of the minister whose only crime was that he believed Jonathan’s neutrality mantra in the polls and thus pursued it with religious vigour by refusing to tilt in favour of the PDP in the discharge of his duty.

Let Jonathan list the misdeed or so called lapses of the minister and subject it to public scrutiny. If we have not overestimated the competence of Mr President, he should recall that it was still under his watch that same Ohakim led some booth-licking politicians like I Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu and a handful of hungry monarchs to Aso Rock just to tell him to sack his then minister for Commerce, Chief Achike Udenwa. Not too long ago, Ohakim had prevailed on the idle Imo state house of assembly in the "absence" of worthwhile ventures, to move a motion urging Jonathan to sack the minister for interior. The plots have failed until after Tuesday night when Ohakim cancelled all his appointments in Imo state to celebrate the Presidents victory át the villa. Like Herod and the head of John the Baptist, Jonathan rewarded Ikedi Ohakim with the 'head' of Iheanacho. President Goodluck Jonathan would have to tell Nigerians actually why he sacked him. He needn't make a fall guy out of Iheanacho to satisfy a power-mongering clique in Imo state!

@gbawe

You know, sometimes the hard way IS the only way. Your points all seem to make winning the end rather than the means. So do you think that it is okay to be silent on the ills of the opposition just to have a broader appeal?

You are a member of ACN. what do you make of Nuhu Ribadu's political career as it stands now? I am still a fan of NH but I recall when many raised questions about his alliance with Tinubu, he explained it away.

Would you agree that the marriage has cost hi more than the loss in the election?

Buhari took the hard way and even if he did not win this election, he has won in many other ways. I am glad that the last minute Alliance did not work. That would have been a dirty compromise on the General and Pastor Bakare's standards.
there is a thread of over 4 pages where the future of Ribadu has been analysed within the context of what we know in the present.
Gbawe was and still is a major contributor on that thread.

Jonathan's political and governance skills even without any hostile opposition have not been great. In the last 4 years, the Yar'Adua-Jonathan administration spent over $200 billion of oil and non-oil revenues, including over $20 billion the Obasanjo administration left behind in the Excess Crude Account, with little to show for it. Not a single major infrastructure investment or policy initiative has been concluded in four years!

For example, Nigeria's budget for 2011 is the most interesting I have seen in my adult years. The entire oil revenue projections for the year could not cover the salaries and running cost of the Federal Government!

Government has become the biggest business in town and growing so rapidly from 2007 that we are resembling a perfect rentier state for the minority political elite. There is little or no investment in physical and human capital, even with very high oil prices the administration has enjoyed.

I am more worried by this portion of the article.
This is truly worrying.
Is this rentier state the FRESH AIR we were promised?
