Jobs/VacanciesRe: Shell Nigeria - The Next Generation by mcgboye(m): 11:19am On Apr 16, 2009
Belated Easter greetings to y'all.
Jobs/VacanciesRe: Shell Nigeria - The Next Generation by mcgboye(m): 2:58pm On Apr 07, 2009
My people, i had my SRD y'day.
B4 i give u the load-down, let me state on record my gratitude to all u nairalanders, especially opensesame, for giving me the courage to attend the SRD. Like i told my fellow interviewees y'day, i couldnt have attended the interview without ur encouragement. Thanks all.
I met Sandra, a civil engr graduate from Warri, who recognised me immediately i got there yesterday. "you are the guy on nairaland, aint u?", she asked.
As per the interview proper, we were eight; 6 civil engrs, 1 structural engr and me, a surveyor. i was the odd one out. Even the assessors weren't too sure who going to interview me!!!

THE CASE STUDY
My opinion; you dont have to read too extensively to tackle the first two stages. we were given a an overview of a fictitious shell company to study in about 30 mins. this provided an opportunity for us to quickly go over the company whilst listening to the HR head briefing us as per the SRD. After this, we were given the main Documents telling us all we need to know about the fictitious shell company (this time, Shell Aduki). This document would normally include a lot of information from which you'll be required to deduce what the key issues are and proffer solutions. this reading lasted one 1 hr. after that, i faced the assessors (in this case acting like the regional manager of shell and the incoming biz devt manager). First, i spent 5 mins to present what i felt were the key issues involved and the likely solutions. This can easily be termed HIGH LEVEL SUMMARY.
The next 20 mins were spent discussing my suggestion and recommendations with the two "managers". Needless to say, I was extensively drilled.

THE GROUP STUDY
Another exercised based on the fictitious shell company, Shell Aduki. We were divided into two separate committees, the Local Committee and the District committee. Each committee was given a list of 4 proposals which were to be funded by a special fund created by shell aduki for that purpose. however, the choice of project has to meet a lot of criteria set by shell and subject to the available fund. each candidate read the proposal for 5 mins before meeting, at the committee level (and in the presence of independent assessors who acted as if they werent there) to discuss which proposal met overriding public interest and still met Shell's criteria and is still within the limited fund available. After debates arguments, disagreements etc, each committee finally came to an agreement as which proposals it would adopt. Then both committees met to discuss the proposals and finally come to an agreement on which proposal to adopt. as we were about coming to a final conclusion on this, there was a "breaking news", as we were given another paper which announced a sudden earthquake at a neighbouring community and the government needed aids from everywhere for relief purposes. We were told to consider the possibility of including this in our proposal. All this in the presence of the assessors who, again, acted as if the werent there.

TECHNICAL INTERVIEW
You have two interviewers, the technical assessor who is expected to have technical know-how about your project and the assessor from HR. Everyone knows about this, huh? Except slight differences from what my master, Opensesame, said. If you have chosen a technical interview like I did, you are not required to prepare a slide. In fact, in my own case all I was asked (actually, instructed) was 1-page summary. At the interview proper, I sat on chair facing the assessors where i gave the 15-minute summary of my project (I spent much less time). I was then drilled for another 25 mins.
The only problem i had here was that since there was no one around who had a good knowledge of Geoinformatics and more importantly, GIS. Therefore, there was no flow. In fact, The HR assessor even asked more questions than the technical assessor himself. it was very clear he had, at best, a very limited idea of GIS.

All in all, it was a pleasant and valuable experience.

OH OH OH OH, I forgot to mention the exotic lunch we had. The eba and efo riro really filled my belly.

yeah yeah yeah

hello all.
just 12 hrs to the SRD. goose pimples!!!!!!!!!!
but am sure more optimistic than i was a week ago.
a quick info then.

i got a call from one of the recruitment coordinators who said i didnt have to pepare a paper since i chose tech interview. he said i would do ok with only a page summary; that's all that's required of me.

any which way, we go all make am. that's my prayer.

Jobs/VacanciesRe: Shell Nigeria - The Next Generation by mcgboye(m): 4:55pm On Apr 02, 2009
@openesame: i swear, walahi, if i had a beautiful fiancee. i would willfully bequeath her to you FOC.
you have been of tremendous help, u wouldnt believe. i cant wait till april 6. i am already a lot bettter and more informed than i was two days ago, just by reading this thread. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wasnt going to wear anything but suit anyway (hussshh, dont tell anyone, but i already arranged for a brand new suit for this purpose) but just thought i should confirm from the master of SRD.
I'll prepare grand by weekend. the presentation too. i'll just do a quick abstract on my final year project.
plus, hope it isnt a deadly idea that i'm giving them just one project for the technical interview. others think two is the standard. well, at this stage, there isnt any going back.
thanks all.
we gonna make it
Jobs/VacanciesRe: Shell Nigeria - The Next Generation by mcgboye(m): 9:31am On Apr 02, 2009
@orimadegun. 2006.
the information is that there must have been a stage between writing test and being called up for the SRD. that's why i wanted Ope to reply to that.
plus, I use to hear that one doesnt need to wear suit to a technical position interview, especially with oil companies. testimonies abound about the guys who wore jeans to interviews and got employed. now it isnt as if i dont have a suit, but i just want to be sure.

Jobs/VacanciesRe: Shell Nigeria - The Next Generation by mcgboye(m): 6:42pm On Apr 01, 2009
WHERE HAVE I BEEN ALL THIS WHILE? never knew there was a thread as refreshing and educating as this.

@ , opensesame, wumwum007, tp2cool, mcgboye, cvibe, thanks to all u guys. you have really made my day. orimadegun, big ups to u man.

i really dont care abt the likely outcome of the SRD, i am going there to haV fun. somehow, i am not too optimistic about the interview, and my pessimism stems from the testay itself. let me explain:
i studied surveying and geoinfromatics from unilag. so i was very happy when called up for the test, june 30, 2008. however, on getting there, i as curtly told i wouldnt be writing the test cos my course wasnt in the list of approved courses for the SITP. after a lot of heated argument, i was reluctantly allowed to sit the test (of course, so i could collect the transport fare at least) but they bluntly told me they werent going to mark my test, so i should forget about any "next stage". And forget i did, until a couple of weeks ago when i got an invite for the SRD. so i was like, hope these guys arent making another mistake calling me for the interview.
so u see my source of pessimism.
plus, i have been so busy at the office that i hardly have time to prepare any slide (in fact that's why i chose technical interview in the first place). i havent even had time to go throught their website, but i'll do that by weekend.

@opensesame: i aM STILL surprised that i still could be asked to make a presentation even when i chose technical interview. pardon me, but are u sure? or can i have ur number so i call u and find out more.
u can put it here (i'll check it tomorrow), or send it to me through mcgboyemay14@yahoo.com.

thanks a lot guys. you have all been of tremendous help. after this, we will have good news to tell, whatever happens at the SRD.
Jobs/VacanciesRe: Shell Nigeria - The Next Generation by mcgboye(m): 2:33pm On Apr 01, 2009
hey all, good day.
what is the low-down on the shell recruitment dY, I mean the SRD?
I have been invited for a technical graduate position, april 6th. while the mail came with useful attachments on what to expect, i need it from the horse's mouth, so to speak.
the area that has been giving me sleepless nights is definitely the technical presentation vs technical interview. i have chosen technical interview, but to be sure, what is the thin line? does it mean i aint gonna present anything with powerpoint cos that's the gist i got. but then i called one of the coordinators and she was ambiguous in her explanation.
please help!!!!!!!!!!!!

the gist is that if u dont pass the essay, ur aptitude test will not be marked

essay is marked first. if you dont do well in the essay, other sections will not be marked.

Jobs/VacanciesRe: Pls Has Any1 In D House Sat For The Gse (graduate Standardization Examination ) by mcgboye(m): 6:24pm On May 28, 2008
numerical and verbal are each 20 questions, 17 minutes
abstract contains 16 questions in 16 minutes.
the GSE is generally similar to Dragnet test, only that it doesnt contain the PAT and the thumbprinting and the passport taken at the test centre.

Jobs/VacanciesRe: Gtb Recruiting by mcgboye(m): 2:52pm On May 06, 2008
Yes! the dragnet test is real and i think after writing the test you will agree that the fee is well worth it. the testing center is located in Lekki and is avery nice place, fully airconditioned. THEY ARE NOT THE ONES CONDUCTING THE TEST, the test is conducted by Testing Worldwide, a UK based recruitment company. so the test is actually online. i wrote it last month through the Access bank recruitment exercise. So the Bank actually paid for those of us who were successful at the fisrt stage.
