Humility fire There was no space for him to sit and if it was in Nigeria he would have booked the whole couch don't forget politicians are scared and as such they can't be seen with commoners And I repeat humility fire] |
HE RETURNED 10,000 DOLLARS Last year July, a security man attached to UBA , Oba Akran Branch Ikeja Lagos did the unthinkable. He returned an opened envelope a customer lost in the bank that contained 10, 000 US dollars (about 3.5 million naira by then). His monthly salary was below 40, 000 naira. Some Nigerians then especially the youths mocked him on the Internet by insisting that he was not a normal Nigerian. Some said that his village gods made him not to take the money. Most interesting was those that he insisted that he will die poor. The man's name is Ibrahim Mohammed Ogbanago. Yesterday at UBA BANK annual general meeting, heaven opened for him. Though the bank refused to announce how much they gave him, two governors gave him total of 15, 000 dollars and the Senate will honour him physically on Tuesday with an award and 5 million naira. Some Nigerians tonight and afterwards will celebrate the winner of Big Brother Africa that will go home with 25 million. But the cash reward for BBN is for what? Ibrahim got his reward for hard work, honesty and integrity not by being indoors guzzling alcohol, partying, smoking or bathing naked for the world to see. I celebrate Ibrahim and urge Nigerians to know that honesty and integrity can be rewarded. We must shun all short cuts to wealth. Be contended but work hard. *#Copied...* |
Just want to make common sense Common sense is no longer common ask Ben Bruce |
]https://www.nairaland.com/3738483/most-technicians-kano-south-while#55514196 The vociferous progressive muslim, Emir Of Kano and Former CBN Governor, Lamido Sanusi has yet again sought to speak meaning and reason into his conservative and seemingly intellectually disadvantaged northern brothers and sisters, charging them to learn from the commercially minded and productive Igbo people as well as other progressive southern tribes that have set the pace of development in the country and apparently left them (the north) behind. He wrote on his Instagram page: "I choose to fight for the progress of Nigerians and suggest solutions to their problems. It's my duty to speak the truth about the ill-effects of conservative Muslims who are harming Islam rather than helping it. I condemned their refusal to expand their knowledge outside their own religion and failure to realise that knowledge is power. I also correctly concluded denying the right to pursue scientific and technological knowledge and restricting people to Islamic knowledge is the best means of ensuring that Muslims in Northern Nigeria will be remain economically backward. I'm upset at the legion of beggars on the streets and is trying to bridge the gap between the backward North and the Southern parts of the nation. I still believe that conservative Muslims are still stuck in the 13th Century and their claim that children need no other knowledge than Islamic studies flies in the face of reality. All the poverty, under-development and immense suffering in the North are a result of uneducated masses refusing to learn work or a trade. The majority of technicians in Kano are from the South while untrained indigenes beg. How does that make sense? Why is it that conservative Muslims who claim to be against scientific progress enter aeroplanes and fly to perform the Hajj in Mecca rather than using camels to cross the desert! Why do they watch sermons beamed by TV live from Mecca and read the Holy Quaran on their laptops yet profess to abhor modern technology? I'd like to point out that there is no harm in copying from the West if it brings succour to the masses of poverty stricken Muslims in Northern Nigeria. After all Saudi Arabia, the "home" of Islam is known for its highly-rated airline, modern hospitals, indigenous oil industry and space program all of which make it a world leader. In our backward nation, we insist on denying the truth. Unless Northern political leaders like Governor Yari pay attention to me, there will never be a day when anywhere in the North will be like the modern Muslim cities of Kuala Lumpar, Istanbul, Jakarta, Lahore, Greater Cairo, Dacca, Karachi, Dubai, Riyadh or Faisalabad" https://www.instagram.com/p/BSvvLdXBl-s/?taken-by=sanusilamidosanusi http://igbobia.com/?q=again-lamido-sanusi-tells-the-north-how-much-backward-they-are-suggests-they-learn-from-ndi-igbo |
Its just a wake up call not to spite the north as u may think |
The recent meningitis outbreak, which has so far claimed almost 450 lives in Nigeria's north, may have exposed one of the reasons why that region of the country continues to have some of the grimmest statistics in almost every area of development. Even before the Boko Haram militant Islamist insurgency, there was alarmingly high figures on infant and maternal mortality, poverty, child marriage, children out-of-school, to mention but a few. The region is also one of the few in the world that is yet to be certified free of polio, the infectious disease that often cripples children. When it comes to the meningitis outbreak, Zamfara state has suffered the most deaths and hospitalisations out of all those affected. While addressing journalists recently, State Governor Abdulaziz Yari absolved his administration of any responsibility for the disease's spread in his state. Instead, he said the problem was that people have been sinning against God. "People have turned away from God... that is just the cause of this outbreak as far as I am concerned," Governor Yari said. "There is no way fornication will be so rampant and God will not send a disease that cannot be cured." In accordance with his belief about the health emergency's origin, Mr Yari proffered a solution which has nothing to do with any action or inaction on the part of his government. "The most important thing is for our people to know that their relationship with God is not smooth," he said. "All they need to do is repent and everything will be all right." These comments have drawn criticism from many Nigerians, notably from Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the emir of Kano, who is one of the country's most important Muslim leaders. But Mr Yari merely amplified an attitude that is not uncommon in the country. In the 2011 post-election violence that broke out in parts of northern Nigeria, nine recent university graduates assigned to work with the electoral commission in Bauchi state were killed. Isa Yuguda, the state governor at the time, ascribed the young people's deaths to a higher force. "They were destined to experience what they experienced," he said. "Nobody can run away from their destiny." He added that human beings should always accept their destiny, whether or not it was "in our favour or against our interest". Thus, Governor Yuguda implied that there was nothing his administration could have done to protect the young lives from their ghastly fate. He was not to blame. In January, I met a 21-year-old woman in Maiduguri, north-east Nigeria, one of the millions of people displaced from their homes by Boko Haram. While living in a camp for displaced people, she was befriended by a man who works with the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), a group of that was formed to help oust Boko Haram. One night two years ago, he locked her up in his official vehicle, muffled her screams and raped her. A few weeks later she discovered that she was pregnant. Her family, his family and the local CJTF boss intervened. They decided that the victim would marry her rapist. That was the best way to save her from the shame of being a single mother, they believed. 'Islamically incorrect' She told me that she did not imagine any better alternative herself and so willingly went along with their decision. Thus, she became the third wife to a man who was paid by the government to protect her and other refugees; a man who raped her and fathered her first child in the official vehicle he had been provided to carry out his job of protecting her and other vulnerable people. I was keen to know what her husband felt about what he had done to her, how he had so brutishly altered the course of the woman's life forever. "He told me that is the way Allah wants it," she replied to me. "He said that is my destiny." This attitude of attributing life circumstances to forces beyond people's control is antithetical to progress and development. It is impossible to cultivate a spirit of innovation and transformation when people believe themselves helpless about their plight. Some northern Nigeria leaders are, thankfully, starting to speak out against such regressive beliefs. The Emir of Kano described Governor Yari's comments as "Islamically incorrect". "When we talk about a difficult environment, we realise that 90% of that difficulty, we can address, because it is self-inflicted," the Emir said. from Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani: |

In our series of letters from African journalists, Joseph Warungu looks at why Kenya insists that its senior political leaders must hold a university degree. There is a whirl of activity online at the moment as Kenyans try to "find" their old school mates to stand by them in case they are required to prove that they did in fact attend school and sat national examinations. It is all a light-hearted mock of the serious situation in which the Governor of Mombasa, Ali Hassan Joho, has found himself in. Police are investigating whether Mr Joho forged his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) as alleged by the Kenya National Examinations Council. He denies any wrongdoing but if these allegations are proven, Mr Joho could be in danger of criminal charges and could be stripped of the degrees he subsequently obtained at university. A person vying for the position of governor is required by law to hold a degree from a recognised university. This means Mr Joho could potentially be locked out of the race to defend his seat in the August general election. It is this last point that leads Mr Joho to describe the whole situation as attempts to intimidate him Mr Joho, who is a member of the opposition ODM party, is a fierce critic of the ruling Jubilee Party government and is never afraid to clash publicly with the president. It is unlikely that the learned men and women who drafted the 2010 constitution of Kenya had Mr Joho in mind when they included a university degree requirement for holders of the office of president, governor and deputy governor. The thinking was that the president is the CEO of the country while governors are the CEOs of Kenya's 47 regional county governments. These positions require governance experience and a visionary leadership that is partly the product of a mind broadened by education. But perhaps the big issue the constitution was trying to address was the culture of the 1980s and early 1990s, when the Kenyan president tended to be surrounded by half-educated sycophants. These handfuls of men who had the ear of the president were so powerful they could influence public policy on just about anything. Arresting Marx? The story is told of how in a bid to stem anti-government sentiments at public universities, one of these semi-literate leaders said: "The government has enough resources to hunt down and arrest this Karo Makisi who is inciting the students to riot". The poor politician was convinced that Karl Marx was a man physically present at the universities and was causing trouble for the government. No-one had educated him on popular social, economic and political ideologies. Another of the inner-circle politicians who barely went to school is famously said to have proposed a great solution to the frequent unrest and clamour for political change taking place in public universities. "If all that the students want is dayarog, they should be given the dayarog to eat so that calm returns to the institutions." He mistook the students' demand for dialogue as a type of food that was missing from their menu. This is how far Kenya has come in the evolution of its political leaders. Now fearful of being barred from running for the lucrative position of governor, many politicians who did not go to university have been studying day and night to obtain degrees. Long-lost classmates But based on experience of poor leadership, Kenyans know that a university degree does not define a leader nor guarantee competent leadership. Some of the worst cases of mismanagement of resources and abuse of power have involved highly educated people. On the contrary, Kenya has in the past witnessed brilliant leaders who were elected into office without degrees and who have gone on to personify exemplary leadership. The constitution of Kenya has another provision on leadership and integrity. This requires people vying for public office to be elected on the basis of personal integrity, selfless service and honesty. However, these core leadership principles have been reduced to a mere process of certifying that the candidate is of good conduct and free from corruption charges. The clearance procedure is open to manipulation and abuse, and judging by the number of leaders who have been involved in grand corruption over the last five years, it is an exercise in futility. So Kenyans can be forgiven for turning Mr Joho's education pain into a national pastime online. No matter how progressive the constitution is or how comprehensive the laws are, it is only when the people breathe life into its letter and spirit and defend it with their lives that transformation can truly begin to take place. For now, because I'm not sure who else might be reading this, excuse me for a moment as I try to find my long lost classmates … just in case. |
