I purchased a domain on Epik and listed it on both Afternic and Epik with the nameservers pointing to Epik. Logged into my Afternic account yesterday and saw it was on pending sale.

So I decided to do a follow up today and got a reply from an end user that it has already been purchased by his team. I did the outbound on Saturday last week but I did not receive any confirmation email from Afternic or Epik.

Where was the domain purchased from, if it has truly been purchased, and what should I tell the end user?

With what you posted, the domain sold on Afternic. Is it still on pending or sold? If its still pending, chill till you get a mail. Probably doing proper check on the money. However, you can send a mail to service@afternic.com to confirm the status. Congrats bro
