Things were not better. More people were poor, we did not have the infrastructure we have now, many of the highways we have today were non-existent or dirt tracks, and there was no Niger bridge

Plus, today, we no longer produce the things we produced in 1963. And even if we did, our populaiton has quadrupuled since then. So, what we produce won't be enough for us

Most villages and towns did not even have power at all

Plus, everyone wants states, not regions. People even want far more states

Things were not better under regions. It is a myth you people tell yourselves.

Nigeria can only develop by becoming industrial, not by relying on oil or anything else.
And under what system of government will the industrialisation takes place?

Definitely not under this present northern dominated inept, corrupt and undefined governmental contraption.

Our constitution is beyond repair, let's scrap it all together, because it is veered towards pleasing one section of the country, whereby monkeys will be working and baboons will be feeding on the products of their sweats.

Let us have another constituent assembly of all the country's nationalities where we will decide if we want to stay together or go our separate ways.

And if we are going to stay together, let us have all the terms and conditions plainly stated out in fairness and equity to all sections of the country.

Personally, I wish we could keep on subsidsing fuel...even to as low as N20 per liter. Practically, we can't . Unless crude oil prices rise

I happen to beleive that the government is inept too....I am rather cynical about past and present Nigerian governments.

Yeah, which is why I in my heartt of heats feel we should not remove subsidy.

But at the moment we don't have the revneue to maintain it...unless we take loans (which you don't like) or raise taxes (which you don't like) or hope we can raise enough revenue from other resources (which is going to take some time, and which is subject to the same price fluctuations as oil...and may not yield enough revenue anyway)

Which subsidy removal will alleviate...because more and more people will invest in refinereis to make profits...which means more jobs, more revenue for government, more jobs indrectly, and eventually, low fuel prices

We did the same for GSM....it was very very costly once...but the free market polices enabled prices to crash, enables the IT infrastructure that we have that was built with zero government money, and created jobs, directly and indrectly

Profits don't all go into some pocket somewhere...they get invested.

I myself would like a left wing revolution. But at the end of the day, when you have finsihed the money of the rich in providing welfare projects for the poor...and you need more money, only there are no rich to get money from, what would you do then?

Almost all the countries that did revolution, France included are now capitalist again. The soculaist ones who keep on shouting revolution are very very broke.

Subsidy must go...or we take more loans and more loans and more loans...or we raise taxes on everyone. Poor and rich. Or we keep paying the subsidy till we are broke.

Lord knows I wish there was another way. I really wish there was another way.
I have said it that you are living in a theoretical Nigeria of your own making if you believe that subsidy removal will alleviate poverty. Where have you been staying over the years? It can't be in Nigeria. What happened to all the subsidies that Buhari have been removing since 2015, have they translated to improved living standards for the people?

As for revolution (whether capitalist or socialist one), ask the French (or the Americans and Russians), they are more happy and prosperous for it.

As for you, you are just a pretender, a spokesman for subsidy removal on media space. Therefore remove your subsidy, and enjoy the terrible outcome when it comes.

I am through with you.

Which subsidy removal will alleviate...because more and more people will invest in refinereis to make profits...which means more jobs, more revenue for government, more jobs indrectly, and eventually, low fuel prices

PoliticsRe: Nigerians To Pay N234 Billion Taxes Monthly With Petrol At N385 Per Litre by membranus: 5:08pm On May 21, 2021
tauceti23:
They do, and they also have higher tax to gdp ratios than Nigeria, and tax more of their people than Nigeria, and finally the GDP is higher than Nigeria
Plus their subsides is not for everyone...in the US for example...subsides on fuel are for the poorest poor perople..not for everyone.

30% OF taxable Nigerians are actually taxed..and they are , you guessed it, people living in the rich echelons.

Right now, for example, the poor pay less for power compared to the rich

We should tax the rich more...I am for it (I lean left after all)...but we should also widen the tax base.

Most of the time, we use high oil revenues, when prices are high, to cover the revenue gaps not met by the poort ax to gdp ratio. At the moment oil prices are low for a nation our size..crude oil that is.

Yeah, that's the problem, and I fully accept that would happen.

But the alterantive is, we keep subsidsing, and we keep running out of money. GEJ reinstated subsidy. He ended up running our forex reserves low, and our revenues low from just paying for subsidy...and even then, Buhari still had to pay for some of the leftover money some 3 years after GEJ left office

There is a reason why GEJ wanted to remove subsidy in 2012 then...and there is a reason why government has to remove subsidy now..and it is called waste.

Dangote is not comming to full op by 2022....more like by 2030, he would reach half capacity

Plus Dangote took loans to pay for that refinery. Lonas that have to be paid back...and if fuel is subsidsed, he won't be able to make the profit to pay them loans back.

Same thing for BUA refinery, and the other ones coming up...even NNPC TOO.

It is one thing to build a refinery, but it has to keep making a profit to be able to fund upgrades, repairs, etc...and pay salaries. (Government is helping by offering to sell crude to Dangote at naira price, not dollar price)
It appears you are living in theoretical Nigeria of your own which have no practical realism.

Keep on pushing your economic theories to support this inept and incompetent government actions. But the reality on the ground is that the poor are suffering through high prices of food (which your subsidy removal will further exacerbate), high youth employment (which the government encouraged by their demoniac greeds over the years). Taking into account the already criminal tendencies of everyone in a bid to survive, any additional overburdening of the masses will surely put a fire to the proverbial keg of gunpowder of the country (which I am highly expectant of), and then the politicians will realise that their supposedly Plan B to escape will fail, because all borders will close up on them.

Read the French Revolution and you will understand why it is not advisable to push the masses beyond endurance.
PoliticsRe: Nigerians To Pay N234 Billion Taxes Monthly With Petrol At N385 Per Litre by membranus: 4:31pm On May 21, 2021
tauceti23:
Well, the problem is that the cost of subsidy keeps rising because the cost of production of fuel keeps rising.

Even if we cut the cost of governance, it would give us, at best, a sum of money that can only subsidsie fuel for a year or two..if not less, because at the end of the day, the cost of production, and by extension the actual fuel price, will keep rising.

Add the fact that we cannot spend money saved from cutting cost of government just on subsidy...health, educaiton, sport, etc etc all have needs too. Our transmisson system for power needs replacing too.

In developed countries, subsidies are paid for via taxes. Here, we pay for subsides from the revenue we get from selling crude oil which at the moment is not enough due to falling oil prices since 2014.

Therein lies the problem. Either we tax more and more people (at present 30% of the taxable populaiton is actually taxed) to get the revenue we need to subsidsie fuel, or we remove subsides, and hope that the resulting increased investment and more refienreis leads to price reduction in the long term by competition

(In a way, this proposed subsidy removal is not total yet...government is still setting the prices. Personally, government should not set prices...the market should)
All over the world, governments in one way or another subsidise their citizens' consumption of some basic amenities or needs, and Nigeria cannot be different.

So since Nigerian government has always failed to fully, correctly and widely tax the rich to fund this subsidy because of the rich men' clout, and since the poor in the society must surely be helped, and since oil revenue is the only victim left to be milked, then so be it.

If the government want total anarchy ( we are already on the path to total breakdown of law and order), then they should again increase the petroleum price to fund the greeds of those in power and office. Whatever the outcome of that policy they should be ready to absolve it.

However Dangote refinery is coming to full operation latest by 2022 first quarter, subsidy might no more be needed if this translate to lower cost and price. But until then let government do the magic that will keep fuel cost low for the masses.
PoliticsRe: Nigerians To Pay N234 Billion Taxes Monthly With Petrol At N385 Per Litre by membranus: 2:29pm On May 21, 2021
tauceti23:
In 2012, Nigerians were told that subsidy has to go. Nigerians protested, rioted, and the subsidy was brought back under a different name.

Now, we are at the point where we have no choice because

1.We are losing billions to smuggling of cheap fuel

2.We have virtually limited investment in new refienreis because no one is going to come and build refinereis with price controls so low

3.We are running out of spare cash to keep fuel prices low. Oil is not as high as it used to be

4.We don't have a high tax to gdp ratio to pay for subsidies

So, inasmuch as I don't like APC, and think they have failed...it is time we said goodbye to subsidy.

Or we keep on taking loans and more loans to make up for the money lost for paying subsides.

And look, we can remove Buhari tomorrow.,....we can bring back GEJ, we can split the country, we can do whatever...but it still does not change the fact that we cannot keep on subsidisng fuel, or lying to ourselves by partially removing subsidy and bringing it back when prices rise.

All our neighbours, including the oil producers pay higher

Time we faced reality.

P.S If you abuse me, I report you to the mods. And any questions will be met with the response: Go and read about subsidy and why it is bad...and also 'How should we fund a subsidy'. I have supported subsidy removal since 2012. And I think it is high time we woke up to the fact.

Again any abuse will be reported to the mods.

PS.2 By abuse, I do not mean that you cannot disagree with me...but please do so politely. But any name calling, or personal insults without addresing the facts would be reported. Thank you
What about reducing the cost of governance, by minimizing the number of politicians feeding fat on the country's lean resources?

Why did your analysis not consider that, instead of enthusing on and approving the putting of additional burden on the already overwhelmed poor citizens of the nation?

Bishop kukah(Arch Bishop Of Sokoto Catholic Diocese)

After independence, in order to build a great nation, each country went to work. But in Nigeria, after independence, our people went to pray and fast.

So, while we were praying, Malaysia came here and took our palm seedlings and build a great factory of it.

While we were praying, Singapore went into investment in technology.

While we were praying, India went into ICT.

While we were praying, China went to massive industrialization.

While we were shouting Allahu Akbar! UAE went into massive infrastructural development.

While we were binding and casting Lucifer, Japan went into technological development.

While we were speaking in tongues, Denmark went into education of her citizens.

While we were mounting big speakers in our places of worship, USA was mounting men on the moon.

After our prayers, God, being a wise God decided to reward us according to our labour.

Since those that went into industrialization, technology, infrastructural development, ICT, education etc had been rewarded accordingly. It’s only wise God rewards us with our efforts in prayers.

That’s why today, NIGERIAN pastors are competing in building the biggest churches. That’s why there are more prayer houses and worship places than hospitals and schools. That’s why people rush to prayer houses for medical and business solutions instead of hospitals.
That’s why we don’t do business proposals before jumping into business since we are going to back it up with prayers. And when such collapse, we blame devil.

That’s why it’s a sin to say anything negative about pastors and imams.

That’s why our pastors don’t consider the opinion of engineers while building and blame devil when the building collapsed.

That’s why faith in God replaces building pillars and when it collapsed we blame it on Lucifer.

That’s why our pastors are making sure they plant church branches instead of schools in every street in Nigeria.

That’s why we always wait for God to do that which ability to accomplish He has already handed over to us.

That’s why we want our teachers to labour on earth and come to heaven for their rewards.

Nigeria is a prayer loving, God fearing nation. Religion has taken the place of technology, infrastructure, education and all.

When we are traveling, we ignore all the necessary road requirements, servicing of our vehicles and pray. And, once we pray, we can put a half fit vehicle on the road and blame our step mother or mother in law if anything goes wrong.

That’s why there are more people dying on our roads than wild life animals in the wilderness.

Because, we pray and fast and leave everything to God when God has given us all we need to survive and build a nation…….

God help us.

Oh, Christ worshipers! We want an answer to our question from your wise.

If the Lord was murdered by some people’s act…what sort of god is this?

We wonder! Was He pleased by what they did to Him? If yes,
blessed be they..they achieved the pleasure of His

But if He was discontented….this means their power subjugated His!!

Was the whole entity left without a Sustainer… so who answered the prayers?

Were the heavens vacated…when He laid under the ground somewheres?

Were all the worlds left without a God…to manage while His hands were nailed?

Why did not the angles help Him when they heard him while he wailed?

How could the rods stand to bear the True Lord when He was fastened

How could the iron reach Him and His body pinioned?

How could His enemies’ hands reach Him and slap His rear

And was Christ revived by himself…or the Reviver was another god?

What a sight it is!A grave that enclosed a god!
What’s more weird is the belly that had Him in it!

He stayed there for nine months in utter darkness…fed by blood!

Then he got out of the womb as a small baby,
weak and gaping to be breastfed!

He ate and drank, and did what that naturally resulted in
Is this a god??!!

High Exalted be Allah above the lies of Christians
All of them will be held accountable for their libels

Oh cross worshipers…for what reason is it exalted
and blamed who rejects it?

Is it not the logic to break and burn it along with the one who innovated it?

Since the Lord was crucified on it…and his hands were fastened to it?

That is really a cursed cross to carry…so discard it
Don’t kiss it!

The Lord was abused on it…and you adore it?
So you are one of His enemies!!

If you extol it because it carried the Lord of the worlds

why don’t you prostrate yourself and worship graves,

since the grave contained your god in it?

So, Christ worshiper, open your eyes,
this is what the matter is all about.
When Christ show you this post when you die, and are at the judgment gate, and ask if you are the one who wrote it, you will surely wish on that day that your denial may be acceptable to Him.

Accept Jesus Christ into your life today to make your heaven sure, and to help you to stop writing stupid and blasphemous post.
