Chippa United chairman Siviwe Mpengasi has sparked outrage in South Africa after he declared his support for club star Stanley Nwabali.

Pulse Sports Nigeria can report that the Chippa United boss released an official statement to reveal the club’s position ahead of the clash between Nigeria and South Africa.

In a lengthy statement posted on the social media platform, X.com via the club’s official account, Mpengesi congratulated the Premier Soccer League for having the most players at AFCON and applauded Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos for selecting homegrown talent.

However, he then proclaimed that he and Chippa United stand behind Nwabali, who is the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, and the Super Eagles against South Africa due to the player's rising profile. Nwabali plays for Chippa United and has impressed at the tournament for Nigeria.



“As the Chairman of Chippa United FC and as a proud South African, I find myself in a unique position during this 2023 AFCON tournament in that our very own Nigeria international Stanley Nwabal has been a revelation, his performance for the Nigerian National Team has caught the eyes of the globe, earning him and our cub international claim,” he said.

“With Stanley's rising profile and the international attention it brings to Chippa United FC, the benefits have been nothing but positive. Therefore, I and Chippa United FC stand behind our player Starley Nwabal and the Nigerian Super Eagles tomorrow against South Africa,’’ he added.

South African Government's Head of Public Diplomacy, Clayson Monyela has said on Twitter that his job requires him to "play nice"

This is as tensions are rising over African Cup Of Nations Semi-Final football match between the Bafana Bafana of South Africa and the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

Due to an history of xenophobic attacks on foreigners in south African in the past and comments made by some South Africans on social media, the Nigerian high commission in South Africa had released an advisory to Nigerians living there to be careful of where they watch match and to also avoid inflammation comments that can cause conflicts. They were also warned against loud celebrations should Nigeria win the match which is billed for later today.

The attention of the Nigeria High Commission Pretoria has been drawn to potentially inflammatory online comments made by a section of South African citizens against Nigerians living in host country, largely influenced by the upcoming 2024 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final match between the Super Eagles and the Bafana Bafana on Wednesday February 2024.

2. Most of the comments consist of veiled threats against "Nigerians cooking jollof rice" before the match, and "showing pepper to Nigerians if the Bafana Bafana lose to the Super Eagles", among others.

3. In this regard, the High Commission hereby advises the Nigerian community to be watchful of their utterances, be mindful of where they choose to watch the match especially in public places, and refrain from engaging in loud, riotous or provocative celebrations should the Super Eagles win the match.
