And Southwest, lol.
Weird assessment.
Southwest fought a war against the colonial invaders. We lost and they turned our land to colony.

We were all ruled but we were not cartels like you, occupied and owned by trade merchants, who traded you for 1.1million to best offer. grin

So it is wrong to caption it as Nigeria....there were exceptions to the story.

Well I’m a Yoruba from Oyo state (Ibadan Precisely). Nope I’m not saying Muslim must have a first and last name just that we are both talking from a different context here.

To start with, there are some Yoruba names that are shared among both divide (Muslims and Christians) and there are some Yoruba name that tend to be used most by a religion rather than the other.

You’re right in your assertions but i want you to know there are some Yoruba names that have been polarized such that Muslims won’t bear that in their entirety.

A case is Folake, right from my young days up to this moment, I haven’t seen a Muslim bearing Folake. I may be wrong tho.

My argument is also that since the guy I replied earlier claimed she was born Muslim, I simply said as a devout Muslim that can even clamor for Hijab right she should have at least have one Islamic name included in that her twitter name. Someone like her that can fight for her hijab right will definitely have her Islamic name embedded in her name. Most times the Islamic name is always first name while the Abiso (Yoruba name)) is most times middle name among Muslims.
A muslim does not have to bear an Islamic name to worship Allah.

Colonialism has ended but some people continue to submit themselves, voluntarily, to colonization.

Afolake Ogunbambi
Ashake Ifadare
Ifayemi Awolowo

There is nothing in the Quran that says these names cannot worship Allah.

I just wrote a piece in culture section on this same issue.

Abubakar, Abdullahi, these names were given by idol worshippers before Arab accepted Islam. They continue to be given to Muslim children.

After accepting Islam, why didnt Arab stop bearing names that originated from worship of deities?

My people mumu no be small!

If an antelope, a bull, a lion and a seat etched on the wall of a cave in 1400....can be interpreted by "scholars" today to suggest a writing left by a past civilization and interpreted to mean the Throne of Kings......imagine what messages could be contained in the carvings and art works of animals left in Yoruba antiquity.

Do we have "scholars" that can interprete them?

Excuse my rambling but im going to be all over the place before i address the topic. The reason is because i believe life is a story, it works well when fed in meaty narrative, as opposed to skeletal chronicle entries.

Everywhere on the planet people can be divided along names adopted from lineage of conquerors.

Exceptions are East Asians. They dropped their conquerors names and went back to using their indigeneous names and languages.

The lineages are -
Arab
English
French
Spanish

These lineages can be categorized into -
Arab
European.

In certain places people have lost their indigeneous names and all they have left for identity is Arabized or Europeaned names.

These two categories of name lineage also correspond closely with universal terrorism. Those who frighten and kill others to force their ideology on them.

Everywhere in the world, names adopted from these murderers appear in variations that feature in the local tongue.

A lot of controversy has popped up lately arguing the Yoruba case against Arab, whether in name or word expressions. Did Arab donate to Yoruba, or was Yoruba the donor to Arab?

Let's examine the Yoruba name Apata for instance. It means Rock. It serves as attribute of one who is dependable for support....someone to lean on, a pillar of strength.

Then in Bible its equivalent is Peter.

Did Yoruba donate to Bible or was Apata a Yorubanized feature of Peter?

I have encountered someone with first name Peter and surname Apata. I looked at his form and looked up at him in disbelief...wondering in my mind if this individual knew that by writing Peter Apata, he just gave his name as "Peter Peter" or " Apata Apata".

Let me return to Yoruba and Arabic.

I like what Rodeillo said somewhere on this thread that Gbadamosi must have derived from Badamasi which took origin from Badmas, which in turn was culled from Abdulmasih. He attributed its origin to Egyptian Copts.

Not all names in Arabic are Islamic.

Many people need to be instructed on this as only few have the knowledge to trace name roots.

The Arabic name Abubakar is bear by Muslims. This name existed before Muhammed introduced Islam.

His uncle, a leader of the Koreish tribe, was named Abubakar. The Koreish were guardians of Kaaba, the shrine in which they worshipped their deity gods.

In Yoruba deity gods are called Orisha.

Compare Koreish and Orisha.

The name Abubakar is Bakare in Yoruba.

If Abubakar was a leader of his people he would also have been a Priest of the Orishas.

Many ancient words have been lost in Yoruba but the word Akarigbo remains with us. Its a title now amongst the Ijebus. Amongst the Chiefs in Lagos there is Akarigbere.

Could Abubakar in Arab Orisha worshippers have been same as Yoruba Orisha adherents of Akarigbo?

Compare Abubakar to Abobakarigbo.

Where was the genesis of Abubakar, in Yoruba....or in Arab?

Where was genesis of Gbadamosi, in Yoruba....or in Arab?

legendarystar:
When Nigeria transformed from a business into a country --- BrandCrunch

It all began with what many would describe as the first oil war, which was fought in the 19th century in the area that would later become Nigeria.

Nigeria was then known as the slave coast but by the 1870s, this changed as Britain were no more willing to acquire slaves and rather opted for palm oil.

This product attained high demand by the British through the 19th century, as it was needed as an industrial lubricant for machinery.

The increased need for the tropical plant by the British, which is native to the Niger Delta, was also to maintain the feat that the British had achieved: being the world’s first industrialised nation.

Initially, most of the trade in the palm oil was not coordinated as natives were able to sell the product to the highest bidder. Native chiefs became wealthy because of palm oil.

Europeans, on the other hand, were competing over who would acquire preferential access to the palm oil trade.

Sir George Dashwood Taubman Goldie

Sir George Dashwood Taubman Goldie (1846–1925), an aristocrat of the Isle of Man, would be an important figure in Nigeria’s palm oil business.

In 1879, Goldie formed the United African Company while he took control of the Lower Niger River.

“By 1884, his company had 30 trading posts along the Lower Niger. This monopoly gave the British a strong hand against the French and Germans in the 1884 Berlin Conference. The British got the area that the UAC operated in, included in their sphere of influence after the Berlin Conference,” according to accounts by africasacountry.com.

The Berlin Conference of 1884–85 was a meeting between European nations to create rules on how to peacefully divide Africa among them for colonization.

The conference, basically, gave the British access to the Lower Niger and did not leave much for the Germans and French.

After the British got the terms they wanted from other Europeans, they directed their attention to the African chiefs.

By 1886, Goldie had started moving inwards into River Niger and Benue, which was against the verbal agreement he had made with the chiefs.

The initial agreement was that the United African Company would not go past the coastal areas.

In that same year, the company’s name changed to “The National Africa Company” and was granted a royal charter, giving it the right to administer the Niger Delta and all lands around the banks of the Benue and Niger Rivers.

The company was subsequently renamed to “Royal Niger Company”, which survives, as Unilever, till date.

The Royal Niger Company went ahead with its unfair trade with the local chiefs.

Historical accounts state that the British tricked the native chiefs into signing agreements that gave them the exclusive rights to export palm oil after originally agreeing that there will be free trade in the region.

The chiefs believed this and signed deceitful contracts that were written in English.

King Jaja — Ajambele

The British enforced those contracts and hence when Jaja, a chief from Opobo wanted to export palm oil on his own, he was accused of obstructing commerce and was forced into exile.

He was, however, in 1891, allowed to return home but he died on his way back after being allegedly poisoned with a cup of tea.

Jaja’s incident got many of the native rulers to start taking a second look at the deals they were getting from the Royal Niger Company.

Frederick William Koko Mingi VIII of Nembe kingdom, popularly known as King Koko was one of such rulers.

Having been faced with encroachment from the Royal Niger Company, he also had qualms with the monopoly enjoyed by the company and tried to seek out favourable trading terms, with particularly the Germans.

Koko Mingi VIII — Pinterest

The Royal Nigeria Company, was by 1894, denying natives direct access to their former markets and essentially dictated whom they could trade with.

Following this and further restrictions, King Koko, in that same year, denounced Christianity and formed an alliance with the kingdoms of Bonny and Okpoma to take down the company.

The Bonny refused the alliance but this did not stop the move.

According to historical accounts, on January 29, 1895, King Koko led an attack on the Royal Niger Company’s headquarters, which was in Akassa in current day Bayelsa state.

Yoruba civilization goes back centuries before colonization, from which point our modern literature and latin script took off. Accounts of exist of when Oba Eshinlokun sent Oshodi to Portugal to learn commerce and clerical duties for record keeping. Prior to contact with Portuguese Yoruba had a civilized value system. Did we have scholarship going back to that time and age? Are there records of literatures....not necessarily in English or any European script...but in any other known writing or symbolism or expression?

Good job!

Of all Governors in this country AA has the best rating so far.

Redistribution of wealth is a good thing. The social welfare needs of the elderly is a priority. Saraki was Governor for eight years. If he was so concerned about social welfare of the elderly he should have made it a state policy and pass a law to make it a budget item. If ghat happened the elderly in Kwara will be dependents on State, and not on any private individual.

A person that feed and clothe others also control and manipulate their will. No elderly should be at the mercy of a private politician before they can eat.

Social welfare generally is why Awo was forever denied presidency of Nigeria. That was one of the pillars of AG and later UPN to create government programs so people can go to govt for needs, as part of their rights for freedom, liberty and pursuit of happiness.

Government is able to institute social welfare programs but they will not. Our politicians prefer we are dependent on them to eat.

In fact, building a Secretariat creates job needs for construction and staffing....another way of redistributing income and growing local economy.

God bless Gov. Abdulrazaq Abdulrahman!

Native Administration was the instrument of authority adopted by Colonial Government to govern the regions of Nigeria.

In Western Nigeria Oba is the head of a Native Authority in his direct domain. Its laws were effected through Native and Custom laws.

There was something called Native Court System. This administrative arm was established by Ordinance No 44 of 1933 under Colonial Govt to give Native law jurisdictional power.

The power of the Court extended over civil and criminal cases. Since it needed to enforce law, it needed a policing unit. The unit was called Native Authority Police Force.

Ake, Owu, Gbagura, Oke Ona, Abeokuta...these were towns, in 1939, under the Native Authority of Alake of Egbaland.

The period in contention is 1940.

Would an Iboman, Onyejekwe be recruited by Abeokuta Native Authority which was presided by Alake, to police Egba and Owuland?

This question is the first troubleshooter on the claim that Obasanjo was fathered in 1940 by an Igbo police officer posted to Owuland.

There was no police officer named Oby Onyejekwe and there was no police post in Owu in 1940.

This is one of a series of Ibo lies that needs to supporting facts to be busted. Ibos are known to throw spurious stories around and they will fabricate pictures to attach and deceive eyes. The only thing they have not mastered is inserting false documents to back their lies. So documentation has been very helpful in busting their falsehoods.

It has been brought to our attention that certain political quarters in this country are in possession a video purportedly showing the ex Governor of Ekiti State, HE Peter Ayodele Fayose, moving with some dance steps in company of a lady.

We wish to categorically clarify for the public that His Excellency has some disabilities that necessitate a treatment regimen. His treatment is unique in that after an extensive medical diagnosis was performed the prognosis for his next stage towards healing and recovery included a sea cruise which is credited as a great benefit for homeostatic patients. In addition, due to his age bracket, the doctor had insisted that he needed kinetic revitalization in his joints, in muscles as well in balance and coordination. He could either start running on tracks or dance for long periods of time and get the benefit of coordinating motion with sensory organs. He choosed dance.

Can anyone deny that salsa music offers a great variations in body gyration, reflex and body work out? No!

His Excellency is viewed in the recorded video observing his prescribed mechanical/kinetic dosage of therapeutic dance regimen but enemies are already mis-interpreting the act in profanity. If these enemies of progress observe the ex-Governor swallowing two pills of prescribed analgesics, God forbid, they could misrepresent it in public to say Fayose is using narcotics.

We therefore encourage naysayers to step back their propaganda and allow His Excellency to complete his dance therapy abroad.

For additional info we post the following to clear the air on the benefits of a dance therapy.

We do not expect to hear any more noise on this subject in the public space.
