Politics › Re: “95 Per Cent Of States Can’t Pay N30,000 Minimum Wage” - Ebonyi Gov by MetaPhysical: 1:29pm On Apr 21, 2019
Osagyefo98:
Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State on Wednesday in Abakaliki, the state capital, declared that 95 per cent of states in the country cannot pay the proposed N30, 000 minimum wage to workers.

Mr Umahi, who is the Chairman of the South East Governors Forum, said this while inaugurating a 36-member fact-finding committee to ascertain the mode of workers’ promotion arrears payment in states across the six geo-political zones of the states.

According to Mr Umahi, the payment of the N30, 000 can only be realised if the federation account allocation formula is reviewed to offer more earnings to states.

“The federal government collects 52 per cent of the revenue from the federation account and when I tried to put the N30,000 figure to Local Government Areas (LGA) it means they will borrow N1billion to add to their allocation, in paying salaries.

“I will definitely not be a governor to govern such a state and will never preside over a state that will allocate 100 per cent of its earnings to pay salaries,” he said.

The governor recommended that the issue of petroleum subsidy in the country should also be reviewed as had been noted by the state and federal governments.

“We must presently have the courage to say this because a lot of money can be saved from the subsidy if properly distributed.

“When 100, 000 litres of petrol is allocated to me for instance and deducted from my allocation, it is then my business to ensure that there is no leakage.

“There is no governor or political office holder that signs cheques but civil servants as the country’s leaders and labour are just putting water inside a basket and praying God to hold it with this minimum wage issue,” he said.

He urged the country’s leaders and labour to liaise and decide on the percentage of the federation account that should be voted for salaries and other sectors.

“We should determine how much should be allocated to education, health, infrastructure among others if 100 per cent of earnings are used to pay workers salaries.

“Many states are experiencing various problems and cannot pay salaries but the people condemn their governments over their inability to provide good roads and other amenities.

“People don’t understand the problems being experienced by these states and the governors have kept quiet for long and need to speak presently,” he said.

Mr Umahi regretted that the issue of promotion arrears for workers in the state had lingered for long and urged the committee to be sincere with their findings to find an amicable solution to it.

“We have been setting up committees on this issue and getting no results with people not being sincere and resorting to all sorts of things,” he said.

Hyginus Nwokwu, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), noted that the issue made the governor to institute a 36-man member committee to tour states in the six geo political zones and ascertain the mode of payments.

“The members are drawn from critical elements of state with the organised labour having 12 nominees, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) 12 nominees and the government-12 nominees.

“The committee will tour three states in each of these zones, ascertain relevant facts, analyse and present them to enable government take disposable and final actions on the matter,” he said.

Leonard Nkah, the Acting Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), in the state and Chairman of the committee pledged to ensure the actualisation of the committee’s aims.

“We pledge to assiduously discharge our duties and make recommendations that will permanently solve the problem for a healthy government and labour relationship,” he said.

What do SE governors use their state allocations for?

Umahi should stop deflecting to what others can or cannot do and focus on his own state. Can he pay the wage or not?

I truly blame Yorubas that vote for politicians married to non-Yoruba women. Governors are now in the role formerly played by Obas. They are not just political leaders they are also to promote culture. The first wife is the immediate resource a governor uses to engage other women in community to drive culture. Imagine an Ibo first lady assuming cultural leader position in Yorubaland. grin
This is why I think Ondo people were very naive. They say they dont want Tinubu to interfere in their politics so they gave their state to an Ibo to be first lady over Yoruba ladies.

So i support your response. Going forward we want to know who will be our governor candidate and who will be our first lady candidate. Any governor candidate with Ibo wife is an automatic disqualification from the race.

The women of Ondo have vowed to remove Akeredolu and his Ibo wife at next election.

For those calling Mansa of Mali, for one, I'm talking about modern era...18th, 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, with wealth we can quantify. Not someone that was an emperor in c.1100 and made his wealth from his empires...that was what Mansa Musa did. I don't consider him wealthy, just as I don't consider Queen of England wealthy. Sir Ojukwu's wealth can be quantify; go to Lagos and see those buildings he owned as far back as 1950s...these huge buildings that only multi billionaires could own back then.

If you want me to mention Mansa, then we must mention King Solomon and all other kings and emporers. But that's not the point of this, the point is BUILDING WEALTH FROM BUSINESS SWEAT THAT CAN BE VERIFIED.
If you go by that standard Sir Ojukwu was not the richest African or Nigerian.

Nkemakonam62:
The Missionaries and Pastors Organization of Nigeria (MPO) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to release the certificate of return to the incumbent governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, as the duly declared winner of Imo West Senatorial District.

Speaking at a conference in Lagos, the patron of MPO, Archbishop Onyeagoziri Okeugo, stated that it was unfair to withhold the certificate of return from Okorocha since he was announced the winner adding that, if there was any anomaly, it should be taken to court.

Onyeagoziri declared that the organization was making this call not for any personal interest but for that of the nation because, according to him, the international communities are watching.

“We commend INEC for the good job it performed during the general elections but the job is yet to be completed. We are calling upon INEC to release the certificate of return of His Excellency, Rochas Okorocha, who was duly declared as the winner of Imo West Senatorial District by the returning officer, we believe this is the right thing to do and anybody who is offended should go to court, which is the hope of the common man.

“We want INEC to note that eyes of international communities are watching, even a common man in the street knows that politics are being played somewhere and to complement with the spirit of integrity of President Muhammadu Buhari who stands against corruption.” He said.

He further stressed that the church is seen as the third eye of the nation with the ultimate goal of ensuring peace, tranquility and impartiality and as such, it is expected of it to open its eyes and comment when there is anomaly of any sort.

In 1951 she ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the regional assembly as the candidate of the NCNC.

The NCNC rejected her bid for a second candidacy for the assembly in 1959 so she ran as an independent candidate which split the NCNC vote and ensured the opposing party’s victory. She was subsequently expelled from the NCNC and formed her own party, the Commoners’ People’s Party, which was disbanded a year later.

That marked her downward spiral in Nigerian politics.

She lost her relevance as a national political party leader and then allied with international bodies.

When she became world vice-president of the Women’s International Democratic Federation, her alliances with the East in the Cold War days (culminating in vists to China and USRR as well as winning the Lenin Peace Prize) made things worse as she was seen as a threat by the West.
In 1959 there was no Nigerian politics. There was regional politics. Politics was very local to the point that NCNC successes were limited to Lagos and West. North had their own local politics. Politics in East dictated by default of NCNC in Lagos.

To say her popularity diminished in Nigerian politics suggests she was popular in local politics in North and East, which were not the case. Her base remained West.

In West many parties failed, NCNC being one of them. By the time the coup took place in Jan 66, NCNC had lost steam. So it is a compliment to her that she even floated a political party in the West, the hot spot of politics.

Many people had their fortune changed from Jan 66 forward, Mrs Kuti was not an exception.

Culturally too her social role in the Yoruba community was expected to change once she entered into her 50s. I doff hat to her for her braveness, leadership and pioneering spirit.

Her popularity did not diminish in West, even past Independence. Study the Kuti's family history to understand how she became outspoken. They are Egbas and her husband was a Baptist Minister.

Abeokuta was a citadel of political and missionary pioneers. Madam Tinubu was also Egba and a model for Mrs Kuti.

It should also interest us that the 1947 delegation did not include anybody of the Hausa/Fulani stock.

It essentially comprised Zik, two yoruba men, and representatives of minorities- Women representative, a Kanuri man, an Ibibio man and a Cameroonian.

This is instructive in terms of the national and gender outlook of the NCNC, something only the NPN, PDP and lately the APC have able to achieve.

It was easy to bury ethnic differences when fighting the colonialists under the likes of Herbert Macaulay. Immediately independent was achieved. those differences became very obvious.

It is just like CPC, ACN and ANPP buried their differences to fight a d defeat their common enemy - PDP - in 2015.

The differences became apparent once power was achieved.

Most political parties in Nigeria have had ethnic/sectional origins which always worked to their disadvantage eventually.

Unfortunately, NCNC lost that outlook and became a regional party.
The ethnic differences were known and played on the surface. The colonial masters had a solution for it. They gave each section its independence in order to avoid a political inferno.

In 1957 West had its own destiny to be managed by Yorubas. East had its own destiny to be managed by Ibos and North had its own destiny left in the hands of Hausa/Fulani.

January 1966 is a milestone! It destroyed regional independence.

You dont yet understand Yoruba. grin

There is a key in the human spirit, we use it to unlock self-improvement. By nature the environment makes us indolent and spoils us, makes us comfortable to remain attached to the material world...a beastly state of existence! Yorubas are never accepting this attachment and so we keep probing until we find the key to unlock self-improvement and reveal the inner divinity. Its very important for you to understand that this key opens the conscience to know, innately, the separation between human and beast. Yoruba continues to evolve along the continuum of human civilization. Those who hate Yoruba are on the opposite side of this awareness, they remain attached to the low, beast nature. They are content with the crude acts and unrefined nature, self-reflection means nothing.

Yoruba will think ahead and test the outcome in his mind before carrying out his thoughts. ....but thats Yoruba, a civilized and divine being. The opposite is where you will find others. grin grin

I find it amusing that the people accusing Awo have not once mentioned the intra-party squabble between Zik on one hand and Adedoyin and Okurunnimbe on the other hand.

These two were the principal actors in Zik's failure to clinch the central seat.

Adedoyin and Olorunnimbe (both members of the 1947 delegation in contention here) were eventually expelled from the NCNC.

Zik himself went back to the east to dislodge Chief Eyo Ita,. leader of government business in the east (but from a minority ethnic group and likely a protege of Chief Essien of the 1947 delegation).

This was majorly an intra-party affair that had national consequences.

The closest contemporary analogy is to blame Jonathan for Saraki's emergence as Senate President in 2015.

FRK was often in conflict with Azikiwe and the rest of the party leadership because she felt women were not as well-represented as men. She herself was eventually expelled from NCNC.

"There are no permanent friends is politics, only permanent interests" , so they say.
Many more dumped NCNC after the famous Akintola audio broadcast. It awakened Yorubas who previously thought Azikiwe shared their views of nationalism. While they viewed nationalism from a liberal approach, Azikiwe saw it as opportunity to install his ethnic Ibos. The Yorubas in NCNC were blind to see what Zik was doing....it took that broadcast for them to wake up. Their exit killed NCNC. Proof that Yoruba was the life and backbone of NCNC and when they dumped it, Zik had no strategy or tactics to save and sustain the party.

So irritating. When would they start holding their very own local champions to account? You would NEVER see then create a single thread criticizing their leaders. If one manages to, the rest of them would curse the life out of him calling him Afonja.

So pathetic.
The governors purposely induce hardship. They cart away state allocation from Abuja into personal offshore accounts. They refuse to fight insecurity. They allow kidnappings, assasinations, abuse of women. If they arrest criminals they release them back into society soon after. Criminals find East lucrative and they are protected. The governors refuse to build industries. The hardship eventually force Ibo emigration to other parts of Nigeria.

Their people are told their hardship and suffering is caused by Yoruba and Hausa/Fulani.

Yoruba leaders wisely look the other way and act as if everything is normal. Hausa used violence to resent Ibos and used every flimsy excuse anywhere around the muslim world to butcher them. They've learnt through the Yoruba approach to act ignorant and look the other way as well. This is why Ibo is no longer killed wantonly in North.

Today, because everybody look the other way, Ibo's political value on the influential index is zero. They are incapable of securing a win for anybody, even when conditions favor victory for the candidate. Events from 2015 to 2018 favors a defeat of Buhari....yet Atiku failed to pull it off; he is in bed with the wrong political bloc.

So Ibo leaders have steadily, one after the other, stolen their peoples future and eroded the political will of SE. Politically the rest of Nigeria has learned to look away from SE and act ignorant of their cry of marginalization. Their ability to influence political destiny of Nigeria has been dismantled...through the direct actions of their own leaders and the indirect action of others giving approval to SE governors abuse of their own people.

[s]The National Christian Elders Forum has described the Thursday conviction of the former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen, by the Code of Conduct Tribunal as part of “the jihad” against Christians in the country.

The NCEF claimed the development was a continuation of the “jihad that began with the overthrow of General Yakubu Gowon in 1975”.

The Chairman of the forum, Chief Solomon Asemota (SAN), said this in a statement on Friday in response to an article titled, ‘What kind of elders’ published by a national newspaper.

He attributed the country’s under-development to the conflict between democracy and Sharia, adding that the amalgamation of the Northern and Southern regions had contributed to the problems of Nigeria.

Asemota said while proceeds from oil and gas in the South were shared by all Nigerians, “gold and other precious minerals in the North belong to the North alone to complete annexation of the South to the North”.

He added, “President Buhari in 1983 committed treason when he overthrew the Shehu Shagari government. This is in addition to the fact that he was one of the seven colonels who masterminded the overthrow of General Yakubu Gowon in 1975.

“It was the same coup plotters that retired Chief Justice Elias, a Muslim but was a committed democrat, in order to Islamise Nigeria by replacing a Federal Republic with a Sultanate.

“Today, Justice Walter Onnoghen’s removal through stealth jihad of the executive is the continuation of the jihad that began with the overthrow of General Gowon in 1975.”
