Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has declared that the new anti-kidnapping law passed by the State Assembly will help in checking the rising wave of the ugly crime in the state.


He spoke on Friday when he gave his assent to the bills on: 1) Rivers State Kenule Beeson Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic, Bori ( Amendment) Law, 2015. (2) Rivers State Kidnap (Prohibition) Amendment Law, 2015 (3) Rivers State Traditional Rulers Law No.4 of 2015 passed by the Rivers State House of Assembly.


He said with the law becoming operational, criminals convicted for kidnapping and accessories to kidnap will forfeit their assets, funds and proceeds from kidnap.



He said : "I am happy to assent to this anti-kidnapping bill as it will help the security agencies in their fight against kidnappers and their sponsors".



On the Rivers State Kenule Beeson Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic, Bori ( Amendment) Law, 2015, Governor Wike said the renaming of the school became necessary because of the contributions of the law Saro-Wiwa to the development of the state.



He said that the third bill he assented to titled, 'Rivers State Traditional Rulers Law No.4 of 2015' is aimed at returning dignity and respect to the traditional institutions.



The governor said that there was no reason why the State Traditional Institution should be politicised.

Governor Wike commended the State Assembly for always putting the interest of the state first in their consideration of bills.


Presenting the three laws to the governor for assent, Majority Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Mr Martins Amaehule said that the three laws are vital to the good governance of the state.

Speaker of the House, Mr Ikunyi Ibani assured the people of the state that the Assembly will continue to partner with the Executive for the development of the state.

The Governor of the State of Osun, Mr Rauf Aregbesola as well as Oyo State's, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, have both called for an end to the use of 'His Excellency' and 'Executive' to refer to the president, governors and other public office holders in the country.

This was made known at the opening ceremony of the 45th Builders Conference of the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB), held at International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, on Tuesday.

The governors described the 'His Excellency' affixed to names of public office holders, as an unnecessary ego inflater which transfers “unnecessary extraordinary powers to public office holders.”

Aregbesola was the one who first raised the issue. He said that if such a title should be used at all, it should be to deserving public officials, only after their tenure in office. He also added that the use of 'Executive' to refer to governors was not constitutional and not part of the practice in democratic systems in the world.

He said:

"I do not think it is right to refer to those in government, because they hold governorship or presidential position, as ‘His Excellency’. We copied our democratic system from the West and they hardly use such adjectives to qualify their public officers. I have never seen President of America, Barack Obama referred to as His Excellency on any public occasion.

He is just Mr President and this does not diminish his authority. Neither will you hear the Prime Minister of Britain or President of France referred to as His Excellency. I do not know where we copied this from.

I accept that before independence, we had the British monarchy as our head of government. To that extent we respect the monarch with such praise adjectives, like ‘His Majesty,’ but, royalties are not the same as elected officials.

You don’t have to describe a governor as executive governor. There is nowhere in the constitution, as amended, where the governor is expected to be called executive governor.

By virtue of the fact that we do not operate a parliamentary system, once you are a governor, you are an executive governor. Let us just call our governor, Mr Governor; president, Mr President, that is okay.”

Ajimobi also added:

"Just like we have Oriki, in our Igbo and Yoruba culture, where they continue to flatter, patronise us, it has become a culture in Nigeria that we feel spited if these adjectives are not used to describe us. I would like to henceforth say that I should no more be called His Excellency, call me Abiola Ajimobi.”

Fatima Atiku Abubakar, one of the daughter's of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has been nominated to serve as a commissioner in the administration of Gov. Bindow Jibirilla of Adamawa state.

Fatima along with four other women, Shanti Victoria Shashi, Kaletapwa Farauta, Fatima Atiku Abubakar and Lilian Nabe Kayode, are part of the 22-man nominees list sent by the state governor to members of the state House of Assembly for screening today August 6th.

There was pandemonium in Anguwan Katako, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, on Tuesday, following an attack on a mosque during an early morning prayers by Muslims faithful in the areas, forcing the worshippers to scamper for safety .

We learnt that the gunmen, suspected to be from a neighbouring community, arrived the area on foot and shot sporadically at worshippers but no one was killed or injured.

An eyewitness, Alhassan Suleiman, who spoke on the issue, accused Berom youths of launching the attack, saying that soldiers attached to the STF had visited and assessed the level of damage to the mosque.

Suleiman said security agents and residents of the community were able to recover shells of bullets after the attack but expressed displeasure at the slow response of security agents.

When contacted the STF Media and Information Officer, Captain Ikedichi Iweha, confirmed the incident, but said the response of personnel in the area had doused tension.

Captain Iweha said "the response of personnel was what led the gunmen to flee the area but we are combing the entire area to ensure that there is no breakdown of law and order."

One of Timaya’s alleged rape victim, Shella B has disclosed that she now carries a gun around following the allegation of rape she raised against the ‘Dem Mama’ act and the recent threats over her life.

The Nigerian born American lady said she isn’t taking any chances.

“My life is precious to me. I don’t want to be caught unawares by him; so I am fully guarded,” she said.

As the story goes, Timaya had initially stated that he did not rape her but what transpired between them was with her consent.
