The peace of the university town of Nsukka was shattered on Monday as a middle-aged secondary school teacher was shot dead by unknown gunmen. Mrs. Amaka Ugwu, a classroom teacher at Urban Boys Secondary School, Nsukka, was allegedly murdered at about 7p.m near Ikenga Hotels junction, Nsukka. Source said that “the late Mrs. Ugwu was coming back from where she went to see some family friends when the gunmen numbering about three, who had been trailing her, double-crossed her at the junction. Thinking that the hoodlums were trapped by the potholes at the junction, the deceased slowed down, sounded her horn and flashed her head for them to shift a little out of the road. “By that time, the deceased was already shouting at them for blocking her way. One of the gunmen disembarked from their bike, came to her side and pointed the gun at her. At that time, one of her husband’s relations who was with her in the car ran out and made straight to their house, which is about 100 metres away, to report to the husband about what was going on. The husband on hearing that his wife was being threatened by unknown persons, ran out, wielding machete and shouting on top of his voice that he was going to deal with anybody who hurt his wife.” Our source added that when the husband got to where his wife’s car was parked, he discovered that she had been shot in the head before her attackers zoomed off on a motorbike. He then rushed the deceased to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. “When we checked her car, her handsets, money and other valuables inside the car were still intact. None of them were touched. They were just sent to kill her and nothing more. We even heard from those near the scene during the incident that she was begging them to take her phone and other valuables but spare her life but they refused. Rather, they shot her on the head and her brain scattered on the windscreen of her car when we went there,” one of her relations who pleaded anonymity explained. Investigation revealed that for over six months now, the gunmen had been trailing the deceased, a situation that made her always go out with one of her relations. When our reporter visited the Divisional Police Officer, Nsukka urban Headquarters, Mr. James Nwokolo for confirmation, he was said to have gone to Enugu on official duty. But a senior police officer, who pleaded anonymity confirmed the incident. http://www.metronaija.com/2015/07/gunmen-kill-female-teacher-in-nsukka.html cc: lalasticlala ishilove |

The meeting took place yesterday July 27. President Buhari had called for the meeting with the APC lawmakers to seek for ways to resolve the leadership crisis rocking the lower chamber but the meeting ended in a deadlock with both factions, the Yakubu Dogara faction and Femi Gbajabiamila faction, refusing to bulge and sticking to their different positions. President Buhari however told the members to respect the party's decision. The house has been in a lingering crisis after the Dogara faction rejected APC's decision to make Femi Gbajabiamila the House Majority leader. The governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano defied the torrential rain across the state to inspect the havoc wrecked by flooding in some estates in Awka and Onitsha. The governor who was presiding over the weekly Exco meeting had to call it off after report of collapse of buildings and flooding reached him. Governor Obiano who was amongst early callers at Udoka Estate where a family was rescued after the collapse of their building, and at Ngozika Estate where a bungalow submerged, called on Ndi Anambra to stop building on storm water ways and blocking drainage. “We cautioned our people to observe basic rules and guidelines when embarking on the construction of their buildings. We can see that the rain are here and is causing havoc here and there. People should desist from dumping refuse and blocking drains because it contributes to what we are witnessing. Anyone caught in the act will contend with relevant laws and where found guilty will be punished”, Governor Obiano said. The governor sympathized with the retired AIG Ikemefuna Okoye whose house submerged and instructed that the occupants be lodged in a hotel for few days while remedial measures are made to check the flooding. He also warned those whose buildings are blocking drains that the government will not hesitate to demolish them to save lives. At 3-3 Onitsha where flooding eroded the foot of the bridge thereby obstructing traffic, Obiano observed that the building which caused the havoc has been pulled down as directed with the Nkisi flood channel opened for free-flow. He stated that the rescue work on the bridge will be completed in two weeks and once more warned against blocking of the flood channel. Similarly, facilities and fish worth millions of naira were destroyed at Abube-Nando as flood associated with yesterday’s rain which started by 7am lasted and up to mid-day emptied into the fish pond. Mr Chris Chukwuemeka who owns the farms located between Oyi River and Anambra East local government area told newsmen that in addition, the feeds lost cost N1.5 million totally N7.5 millions of loss incurred According to Chukwuemeka, “I started breeding the fish on 12th march, 2015, and 20,000 pieces were due for maturity 12th August, before the flood menace.” http://www.metronaija.com/2015/07/photos-governor-obiano-visits-houses.html |

President Muhammadu Buhari personally vaccinated one of his grandchildren against polio in Abuja on Saturday, July 25, 2015, to show commitment in eradicating the deadly virus in Nigeria. According to Femi Adesina, a presidential special adviser on media and publicity, the action demonstrated safety and efficiency of the vaccine as well. During his speech President Buhari declared that his administration will do all within its powers to ensure that no Nigerian child is ever infected with polio again: “Today, 25th of July, 2015, Nigeria has successfully completed one year without any case reported of the wild polio virus. “Achieving this feat has placed us firmly on the path to eradicating this paralyzing disease from our land. “I seize this opportunity to call on governors, our traditional and religious leaders, the private sector and our mothers and fathers to redouble their efforts to ensure that every child and every new-born baby is vaccinated with the polio vaccine and other life saving routine vaccines,” President Buhari said. He further thanked all the Nigerians and foreign partners who have support the country’s polio eradication programme in several ways. Polio cannot be cured, but can be prevented by vaccination. Nigeria’s successful completion of one year without any reported case of the wild polio virus is not enough to declare the country as ‘polio-free’. This is possible by 2017 only. http://www.metronaija.com/2015/07/photo-president-buhari-vaccinates-one.html

Property worth millions of naira got destroyed yesterday July 25, after the popular sawmill at Ibereko in Badagry, Lagos was engulfed in fire. Although no life was lost in the incident, the inferno also razed parts of the St. Anthony Catholic church beside the plank market. As at the time our reporter got to the scene, Fire Fighters from the Lagos State Fire Service, Badagry Station, were seen struggling to put out the raging flames as it continued to spread. A resident in the area who simply gave his name as Hamed said: “We just discovered smoke was coming out of some of the planks and before we knew it, ‘Thinner’ which is a chemical we use to make paint very thick exploded and the whole area went up in flames”. However, members of St. Anthony Catholic Church scampered for safety as some groups were said to be having rehearsals as at that time. They immediately evacuated the church premises as neighbours try as much as possible to help them remove valuables, as the fire continued to rage. The religious facility was immediately emptied as the seats, pulpit-stand, public address system e.t.c were taken outside the premises. By the time the fire was totally put out at about 6:30pm, valuables running into millions of Naira had ‘gone’. Some of the shop owners were seen wailing and lamenting the incident. http://www.metronaija.com/2015/07/photos-fire-razes-church-market-in.html
