The Lagos state governorship election tribunal sitting in Ikeja on Wednesday upheld the victory of Akinwunmi Ambode, governor of Lagos state, in the April 11 gubernatorial election. Jimi Agbaje, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had filed a petition, challenging the declaration of Ambode by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the winner of the election. But the panel led by Ibrahim Sirajo, a judge, ruled that the petition was incompetent. http://www.metronaija.com/2015/07/tribunal-upholds-lagos-state-governor.html |
The recovery committee set up by the current governor of Bauchi state, Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar, to recover all stolen government property says former Governor, Isa Yuguda gave out 64 cars to politicians, former commissioners, Special advisers and top civil servant, 24 hours before he handed over to the new administration. This allegation comes barely 2 weeks after the committee said it had recovered 22 cars the former governor gave his wives. The Chairman of the recovery committee, Retired Air Commodore Ahmed Tijjani Baba, while speaking to newsmen yesterday June 30th said the committee discovered that the vehicles were purchased between January and May 2015 and auctioned to the beneficiaries without following due process. “Any vehicle that has not been used for up to three years is supposed to be returned to the service pool when the officer with it is leaving office,” he said. He alleged that the regulation was illegally amended by the last administration in 2010, to grant the state governor powers to auction vehicles below three years. “That gives him right to auction vehicles upon an application by an allottee, but it has to be referred to the board of survey, which will determine the price to be paid. A highly placed former government official wrote on behalf of ten other beneficiaries on May 28, 2015, to the governor and requested for the vehicles without referring it to board of survey, the body vested with the responsibility of auctioning such vehicles,” he said. The chairman of the committee said some of the beneficiaries who have found out that the process was illegal have returned their vehicles voluntarily. http://www.metronaija.com/2015/07/former-bauchi-gov-isa-yuguda-accused-of.html |

Shops at Ladipo market in Mushin today were demolished. Armed men and officials suspected to be working for Mushin Local government and supported by a team of policemen invaded Ladipo Auto Spare Parts market in the early hours and carried out the exercise. As they demolished the shops, traders were barred from entering the market to remove their goods from the shops as the armed men were battle ready to forestall any resistance from the traders as demolitions were on-going. The traders have however started protesting the demolition and had moved to the Mushin council secretariat to complain of what they allege as illegal demolition. http://www.metronaija.com/2015/06/photos-ladipo-auto-spare-parts-market.html

Corps members were attacked yesterday afternoon June 26th along Ekpoma road in Edo state. One of the victims of the robbery said that the incident happened when members of the NCCF Edo state from Auchi were on their way to Benin for NCCF Edo state conference. But on getting to Ekpoma, they started hearing gun-shots and before they knew what was happening, thin-looking fierce men with sophisticated guns began firing gun-shots directly at the bus they were traveling in. Two Corps members were shot but fortunately, it wasn't fatal. More pics after the cut... The armed men made the Corpers come out of the vehicle and lie in the mud in the middle of the express-way where they kept demanding for money and other valuable items and also kept hitting some of them with the back of their guns. The Corpers were robbed of their money, phones, laptop. The ones who were shot are currently in Central Hospital, Benin receiving medical treatment. http://www.metronaija.com/2015/06/photos-corps-members-attacked-by.html

A convict on death row, simply identified as Wale, has allegedly escaped from the Kirikiri Maximum Prison after purportedly bribing a Nigerian Prisons Service (NPS) warden with the sum of N50, 000. Wale, a murder convict was sentenced to death for killing his friend and burying him to avoid detection. He had also buried his victim’s car. The convict was said to have hatched his escape plan after his appeal for a reversal of his sentence failed to scale through and the court stood by its judgement. Despite the high fence and the seeming tight security outside the prison, as well as the well-bred sniffer dogs, the convict escaped into thin air and is yet to be found. It was gathered that the escape is going to lead to a major shake up and mass transfer in a few days in the service. The source said the convict had told the warden that he wanted to go outside the prison walls and he allegedly acquiesced only for Wale to escape. He said, “The initial deal was that the N50, 000 would grant Wale a visit outside the walls but immediately the warden fulfilled his part, Wale reneged and fled. “When it dawned on them the magnitude of the crime, they visited the sick bay and begged them to give them a note that says the convict was cleared to go out. “This is because only the sick bay can write up a note for a convict to leave the walls and it’s usually as a referral to another hospital if the treatment of the sickness is beyond what that they can offer. “Expectedly, the sick bay refused to write any such note because at the end of the day, they might bear the blame and consequences when the bubble bursts.” The aiding and abetting by the warden whose identity could not be ascertained took place despite the repeated warnings by Controller General of Prisons (CG), Dr. Peter Ekpendu. When contacted, NPS National Spokesperson, Francis Enobore, confirmed that the convict escaped but debunked claims that he was aided by a warden. He said, “It is not true that he was aided by our warden. What happened is that the inmate in question developed some health challenges and he was in pain. “He had ulcer and he was taken to the medical unit where we have our fully qualified doctors and nurses for treatment. “Because we don’t have x-Ray machine to enable the doctors carry out proper diagnosis, we usually send such inmates to another hospital with our staff. “Unfortunately, on their way to the hospital, they were ambushed by gun-wielding men and in the melee, the convict escaped. “It’s possible the ambush was planned but the matter is currently being investigated and we will let you know the result of our findings. “ When asked why the picture of the escaped convict wasn’t advertised in the media to aid the search, he said, “It would merely serve the purpose of driving him further underground. “But if you are subtle about it, he will be caught because he would let his guard down and relax thinking we have let him off the hook.” Enobore also said NPS intelligence network alongside the State Security Service, Police and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) are on the trail of the escapee. He also said when arrested, the convict alongside his accomplices would face the full wrath of the law. http://www.metronaija.com/2015/06/death-row-convict-escapes-kirikiri.html |

Details have emerged on the robbery which occurred in the early hours of today at Ogolonto area of Ikorodu, Lagos state. A lady reportedly led the gang to the banks and stayed outside while the operation lasted. The leader of the gang was said to have sat down in front of the bank and was bragging, as no policeman was able to confront her as she was reported to have used a charm which she tied around her neck. Sources at the Zenith bank disclosed that there were about 15 armed robbers whose ages should not be more than 20years. The bank’s safe as reported was broken with the use of dynamite and the staffs were made to lie on the floor while the robbery continued. The young robbers were reported to have burnt three of their vehicles in front of Origin Gardens, a recreational place not far from scene of the incident, and escaped via the ferry service operated beside the Garden. A witness at the scene of the robbers’ escape said: “I could not dare stare them in the face. I just lay on the floor as they instructed and waited there until they left. I have never seen anything like that before.” One of the owners of the garden (name withheld), whose car was burnt alongside the three jeeps, described the incident as a really shocking one. “Nobody is ready to talk to you right now because we are all in shock. My car was burnt and I could not face the people. Don’t ask me how they escaped, why didn’t you come here when the robbery was going on?” At the First Bank robbery scene, the suspects used a device to open the computerized door to gain entrance to the banking hall. Monies were carted away but no staff of the bank was killed. Only one person was reportedly shot in the leg and has been taken to Ikorodu General Hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, the armored tank which the policemen used to stage a pursuit of the robbers was pelted with bullets that almost penetrated the bullet-proof vehicle. Lagos state Commissioner of Police (CP), Kayode Aderanti, who was at the escape route, told reporters that the police would investigate the matter to know how the robbers carried out their operation successfully. When he asked why none of his men could confront the robbers during the two-hour period that the incident lasted despite the fact that a police station was opposite the bank, he said: “we shall look into the matter and investigate thoroughly to know what happened” As at the time of filing this report, no fewer than 20 police vans were patrolling the area to check if the robbers were going to return and ensure safety of lives and properties. Efforts to get Mr. Kenneth Nwosu, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) proved futile as calls put across to him were not replied. http://www.metronaija.com/2015/06/how-lady-led-robbers-to-attack-banks-in.html |

The Vice Chancellor of Rivers State-owned Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Prof. Rosemund Green-Osahogulu, has been abducted by yet-to-be-identified gunmen while returning from work. The VC left the university after close of work on Thursday evening and was around the Aker Base area of Rumuolumeni in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area when armed hoodlums abducted her. The gunmen were said to have trailed her from the institution’s main campus at Rumuolumeni, overtook her vehicle and engaged her security detail. They were said to have overpowered her security detail and her driver, and shot sporadically into the air to create panic and confusion in the area before they drove off. As at press time, the abductors had not made contact with the school authorities. The Rivers State police command confirmed the abduction, and noted that plans had been put in place to ensure her release. The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ahmad Mohammad (DSP), however, said the command was yet to make any arrest as regards the abduction. “The command is aware of her kidnapping. Action has since been emplaced to safely rescue her. But no arrest has been made,” he said. http://www.metronaija.com/2015/06/photo-rivers-state-owned-university.html
