The presidential candidate of the APC, General Muhammadu Buhari, has expressed outrage and grief at the latest terrorist suicide bomb attacks in Maiduguri, which left at least 54 innocent people dead. In a condolence message he issued in Abuja on Monday through his media campaign committee, General Buhari said the frequency with which terrorists destroy lives and property embarrassed him beyond measure, and that tackling such indiscriminate violence would be on top of priorities once elected into office. According to him, terrorist violence has achieved nothing good for anybody and that his administration would confront this insecurity problem with determination and remarkable zeal. The APC presidential candidate explained that nothing can justify this endless and brutal terrorist violence targeted at innocent people, which has also destroyed the economic and social life of the people in areas where terrorists are notoriously active. General Muhammadu Buhari, however, called for increased vigilance among the people. He said the ease with which suicide bombers blend with law-abiding citizens and reach their targets undetected is disturbing. He explained that majority of the people have no idea about the features and characteristics of suicide bombers, and cannot, therefore, identify such killers in their company. The statement extended Buhari’s condolences to the families of the victims of the latest terrorist attacks on Maiduguri. General Buhari has also condoled the families of the recent violence in Rivers State in which some unidentified gunmen attacked and killed APC supporter in the state. He said violence benefits nobody and, instead, it sets back the progress of the country. http://www.metronaija.com/2015/03/ill-confront-insecurity-with-grit-zeal.html |
…Says, I’m fit, ready for March poll The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, on Thursday said he would not grant amnesty to Boko Haram insurgents if elected President next month. He also said he is fit and ready for the poll. The former head of state assured the audience that Nigeria will not break. Buhari, who made the submissions during a question and answer session at Chatham House in London, said he would also personally lead the battle against Boko Haram. He said: “I think I will not go to that office with that promise. I have said in my address how, at least 13,000 Nigerians have been killed by Boko Haram, how millions of them have been displaced and are now kept in different camps called Internally Displaced Persons camps. “Schools have been burnt, there is so much disruption to normal life, people could not farm and where they are able to farm, they cannot harvest. So, granting amnesty to Boko Haram will be unfair to the system. “We will secure Nigeria. We must have the time to collect enough intelligence to make sure that those that we got are given the chance in civil courts to be properly prosecuted.” On his alleged health challenge, Buhari said he is fit as fiddle and battle ready for the March poll. He added: “I am very happy that I have been able to visit 35 states out of the 36. I haven’t broken down even though somebody announced my death yesterday (Wednesday). “I had a call from Maiduguri that somebody rushed into a friend’s house crying and said they have just announced that Buhari has died in hospital in London and so, he called me and I laughed my head off. “Certainly, I will be expecting too much if I don’t expect people to wish me dead. But I am very pleased that I am fit, the doctors have declared me fit and I am going back for the final onslaught.” Responding to a question, Buhari said Nigeria cannot afford to break up again as a nation because its nationalities have bonded. He said: “I appreciate the full import of this question. We have a problem as a people and if you are following my statements, I warned about six months ago that we have to be careful of Somalialization of Nigeria. “We are a group of nationalities like some people wants to call it. We are very different people, religiously, culturally and from different background and we happen to have come together after the amalgamation by the British in 1914. “We find it difficult to separate now because there have been so many inter-marriages and some, we have become interdependent. Our constitution has been very deliberate in respecting our sensitivities and the freedom given in that constitution is a guarantee that we will certainly manage our differences. “We are making a lot of efforts to make sure that we continue to understand ourselves and accommodate ourselves in spite of whatever impression is created among ourselves especially when people are talking so much about religion.” The APC presidential candidate also spoke on his top three priorities to attract foreign investment. Buhari said: “Nobody will take his investment to an environment that is insecure. That is why security is going to be one of our major priorities. We will secure the country and efficiently manage it. That efficient management is stopping corruption and getting jobs among others. “The way of attracting investors is to persuade investors the world over that Nigeria is poised to cooperate with them by securing the country and helping them recoup their investment. It is not a question of having a free ride. They don’t invest for humanitarian reasons, but so that they can recover their capital and make some profit because that is what sustains them. “So, we have to think very quickly and put in place assurances and improve the system so that the environment can be suitable for investment.” http://www.metronaija.com/2015/02/no-amnesty-for-boko-haram-if-elected.html |
The police have arrested a 30-year-old motorcycle rider, Garuba Abdulraman, for allegedly defiling a two-year-old, Pat, (pseudonym) in the Somolu area of Lagos State. Punch Metro learnt that Abdulraman, an indigene of Niger State, also kicked the minor’s pregnant aunty, Alimat Muazu, when the later quizzed him on the child’s whereabouts. The incident happened on Saturday on Ofor Street. A relative of the victim, who did not identify himself, said the family did a medical test on her and it was discovered that her hymen had been broken. He added that the hospital subsequently placed her on medication. “It happened on Saturday, February 21, 2015 around 11.30am.Pat’s mother lives in Gbagada, while her sister, Muazu, stays at Somolu. She decided to visit Muazu that day.It was during the visit that the girl suddenly went missing and everybody started looking for her. “But somebody said he sighted Abdulraman, a motorcyclist, taking her away. So, some women trailed the child to an uncompleted building where he lives. When they got there, they met him and he didn’t tell them where the child was.” Punch Metro learnt that there was an exchange of words between the women and the suspect, and in the ensuing scuffle, the suspect kicked Muazu in the stomach. He was also said to have threatened to use cutlass to hack them if they moved closer. Our correspondent was told that Abdulraman dared the family to report to the police after which policemen from the Somolu Division were alerted. A police source told our correspondent that a case of assault was reported at the station. “When we got there, we found the girl in one of the rooms, in a big bowl of water. “She could barely move and when she tried, she fell down. She began to cry. We didn’t suspect anything until we saw that her pants and clothes had been washed and hung on the line to dry. The suspect was also not putting on any clothes.” The police were said to have taken the victim to the hospital where it was confirmed that there was penetration.Abdulraman was arraigned before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on four counts of rape and assault. The suspect, who spoke through an interpreter to the court, confirmed that he assaulted Muazu and threatened to use cutlass on them. He, however, denied raping the victim. He said, “I don’t know these people from anywhere. I had gone to their compound when someone said he needed to buy plywoods.Pat came near my okada and started playing with it, and those people said I should help them carry her, which I did. After they finished buying the plywoods, they said they could still not carry her, because they had a lot of load to carry. They asked me to help them. “It was while carrying her that she soiled her clothes and I decided to wash it for her. I never had sex with her.” He added that he was forced to threaten the women with cutlass after they stoned him.The police prosecutor, Richard Odige, told the court that the offence was punishable under sections 267, 137, 170 and 56 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State Nigeria, 2011. His defence counsel, F.S. Osordi, applied for bail, for the defendant, asking the court to overlook Abdulraman’s guilty plea to charges of assault and threat to injure with cutlass. “I am not really sure he understood what he was saying because he told me a different thing before this court sat. We apply that the court should order that count three be read to him again,” he added. http://www.metronaija.com/2015/02/motorcyclist-rapes-2-year-oldkicks.html |

The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Organisation has raised the alarm about reports of a fake Abubakar Shekau (Boko Haram leader) allegedly being paraded by the Federal Government, which it says the government intends to use to create an impression that it is winning the war on terrorism. It said credible sources had alerted the APC that the fake Shekau might become a tool to blackmail members of the opposition “by coaching the phantom terror chief” to say he was working for the opposition party candidate, Maj. Gen Muhammadu Buhari(retd.), in order to link its presidential candidate to terrorism as it had attempted but failed in the past. A statement by the Director of Media and Publicity of the APCOPC, Malam Garba Shehu, wondered where the “new Shekau” would come from after government, at several times in the past, announced that it had killed the insurgents’ leader. “The charge to the military, that they should catch Shekau alive by the President in the last 24 hours, lends credence to the report that indeed a fake Shekau is about being created,” it said. The statement noted that “the profile of the leader of the insurgents, Shekau, of a dedicated ideologue,” presupposed that the man was not likely to allow himself to be caught alive. “It is both contradictory to the ideology he preaches and the psychological profile that the world has of him that Shekau would allow himself to be caught alive,” the statement said. The APCPCO recalled that the attack in Kaduna, on the party’s presidential candidate, was believed by most Nigerians that it was perpetrated by the Boko Haram. It added, “The police that are constitutionally empowered to investigate and report on such incidents have not contradicted the widespread belief that this was a Boko Haram’s attack. “The view of the APC is that it does not make sense for General Muhammadu Buhari to be in league with, or be associated in any way with people who have set out to kill him.” http://www.metronaija.com/2015/02/president-jonathans-government-planning.html |
Vandalism has been identified as the cause of Nigeria’s poor power supply, according to the Federal Ministry of Power. If vandalism is tackled by relevant security agencies, the Ministry said the country’s electricity generating capacity would hit 6,000 megawatts in 2015. Godknows Igali, Permanent Secretary in the ministry, made the disclosure at a budget defence session before the Senate Committee on Power on Tuesday. Mr. Igali said vandalism of gas pipelines was the biggest challenge the power sector faced. “Once we go above 4,000 megawatts, people bring us down to 2000; there is no country where its own citizens will go and blow up gas pipelines,” he said. “If these vandals can allow this gas to flow, we will get to over 6000 megawatts.” When the allegation that the Benin Power Plant failed, came up, Mr. Igali requested that the committee revert to a closed session for his response, citing complexity of the issues involved. “Going into 2015,” he assured Nigerians of increased power supply, following greater investment and generation of “more power” by the new plant owners. He said new owners were making “spirited efforts to deal with the teething problems and Nigerians will have more electricity.” Investors have reposed confidence in Nigeria’s power sector, Mr. Igali said, adding that, the sector has offered massive training and jobs for young people. http://www.metronaija.com/2015/02/vandalism-responsible-for-poor.html |
Officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have apprehended the resident pastor of the Eternal Sacred Order of Cherubim and Seraphim at Agodo-Egbe, Ikotun Lagos, over unlawful attempt to export of 174 kilogrammes of narcotic drugs to South Africa, the agency said on Monday. NDLEA said the suspect, Prophet Michael Raji was arrested following the interception of the drug at the cargo section of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) during pre-shipment examination. “Preliminary investigation has indicated that the 60 year old suspect Michael Raji is a suspected top member of a drug syndicate operating in Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa,” NDLEA said. The pastor had three international passports bearing his photographs. “One of the passports bears the name Michael Raji while the other two bear the name Kadigun Fatah Ola. It was equally discovered that the church premises where he ministers also serves as a warehouse for narcotics,” NDLEA said. The seized drugs concealed inside large bags of foodstuff were found to contain 91kg of Methamphetamine and 83kg of Ephedrine with an estimated street value of N609 million. A Mercedes Benz Jeep was also impounded during the operation. NDLEA commander at the Lagos Airport, Mr. Hamza Umar described the suspect as a smooth operator. “I can tell you that this suspect is a smooth operator but we have uncovered his bag of tricks. The drugs were brought to the airport for export to South Africa where it was detected. Investigation eventually traced the movement of the drugs to his church premises where he was arrested,” Hamza stated. NDLEA quoted the suspect in his statement as saying that he collected the drugs from a friend. http://www.metronaija.com/2015/02/photo-nigerian-pastor-arrested-with.html

A Court of Appeal siting in Abuja on Monday, upheld the victory of Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state in the June 21, 2014 governorship election. In a decision delivered by a full panel of the court and headed by Justice Abdul Aboki, the court held that the APC did not prove beyond reasonable doubt that Fayose’s certificate issued by The Polytechnic Ibadan, was forged. The court noted that the issuing institution which was The Polytechnic Ibadan had forwarded a letter stating that the certificate in contention was issued, noting that the APC failed to provide any evidence before the court to show that the certificate was forged. The opposition All Progressive Congress, APC, had approached the court challenging the decision of the Ekiti state Governorship Election Petition Tribunal which sat and affirmed the Governor’s victory in Abuja last December. The APC had claimed that the tribunal erred by dismissing the ground of its petition on the alleged certificate forgery by Fayose and also faulted the tribunal’s decision which struck out the Chief of Army Staff and Nigerian Army as parties in its petition. The appellate court held that the tribunal was right as such office and establishment are not recognised under law to be involved in electoral process and upheld they are not necessary parties. The court however observed that by the provisions of the law, the military has no role to play in electoral process and that whoever deployed the military to Ekiti for the governorship elections had breached the law. “We have looked carefully into this appeal, there is no merit in the appeal and it is hereby dismissed. The judgement of the tribunal delivered on December 19, 2014 succeeds” said the court. http://www.metronaija.com/2015/02/court-of-appeal-upholds-fayoses-victory.html |

Workers in Plateau State owned tertiary institutions have embarked on indefinite strike as negotiations between the government and its union failed to yield result. Victor Dawurang, Chairman of the Joint Union of Plateau State-owned Tertiary Institutions (JUPTI), made this known in Jos on Wednesday. He said the union had given the State Government one week in January to look into their grievances. He said the institutions were inadequately funded and had no subventions to enable them to discharge their duties effectively. He said the union had several talks with government for illegally tampering with salary structure, non implementation of seven per cent peculiar academic allowance and 27 months areas of the new salary structure. He said the one week given to government in January to address the issue elapsed on Tuesday. "The Head of Service, Ezekiel Dalyop, promised that at least the 65-year retirement age, irrespective of number of years in service and the seven per cent academic allowance and two per cent non- teaching allowance would be implemented,” he said. Dawurang said he was surprised that none of the issues were addressed till the grace period lapsed. He said the same issues were also tabled in 2013 and they gave the government 20 months grace which they also failed to comply with. Students in Plateau State Polytechnic, Jos and Barkin Ladi campuses were in the premises without taking lectures. Security personnel were also seen at the Jos main campus. http://www.metronaija.com/2015/02/tertiary-institutions-in-plateau-go-on.html |
Scores of militants armed with guns and explosives stormed a police station in the town of Kanamma in Yobe state late Monday. According to reports, one senior officer who requested anonymity told pressmen that “The terrorists overpowered our men and set the police station on fire before kidnapping the DPO (district police officer), whose body was later found in the bush. Boko Haram members in action Several other policemen were killed, he added. That account was supported by Kanamma resident Maina Kachalla, who said the police station was bombed and burnt down. Kanamma holds significance in the history of the Boko Haram conflict. The group was formed in Maiduguri, the capital of neighbouring Borno state in 2002 but a hardline faction relocated to Kanamma in 2004 and attempted to form an extremist enclave in the town which they called “Afghanistan”, taking inspiration from the Taliban. In Potiskum, Yobe state, multiple witnesses said an attempted suicide bombing was thwarted outside the campaign office of Governor Ibrahim Geidam. The suspect reportedly raised suspicion by loitering outside the office and was confronted by a crowd, causing him to run into an abandoned building where he blew himself up, according to witness Abubakar Ubale, in an account borne out by two others. http://www.metronaija.com/2015/02/boko-haram-attacks-police-suicide.html |

Ibrahim said: “Reports received from eye witnesses so far, indicated that the fire started either by midnight or early morning of Saturday and it is suspected to be caused by electricity problem. “It took the intervention of good Samaritans and men of the fire service to put off the fire and prevent its escalation. “However, more than 300 shops have already been destroyed. Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State and his precedessor, Kayode Fayemi, on Saturday surprised many when they shake hands in public, while exchanging banters. The occassion was the 60th birthday of Segun Oni, a former governor of the state, which held at the Methodist Church, Ifaki-Ekiti. Oni thanked Governor Ayodele Fayose for restoring his privileges as a former governor of the state, describing him as a brother. He debunked insinuations that there was political motive behind the gesture. Speaking at the event on Saturday, the National Chairman of APC, John Odigie-Oyegun, said: "APC is a party whose time has come. APC is a party with welfarist and people-oriented programmes. We won’t steal your money. Public money must be used for the benefit of the people. The level of corruption that exists today will cease when APC gains power. “We would protect our citizens. The life of every Nigerian is worthy to preserve. Whatever that will take us to end insurgency, we are going to do it." Buttressing the position canvassed by Oyegun, Oni said, “It is very clear anywhere in Nigeria that the APC is the government in waiting. The APC would win hands down. I believe this is the ordination of God.” www.metronaija.com/photo-fayose-and-fayemi-exchange-banters-in-public/

Delta State Governor, Emmanuel Uduaghan, on Saturday said he withdrew from the Delta South Senatorial race because of his determination to finish strong on his peace and security agenda. With the withdrawal, less than two days to the primary, incumbent Senator James Manager would likely be returned unopposed at the primary of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Before Mr. Uduaghan’s withdrawal, the election was projected to be a two horse race between Mr. Manager and Mr. Uduaghan. But speaking with reporters in Asaba, Mr. Uduaghan said he had to step down so peace could reign in the state. He said he had a meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan and the National Chairman, Adamu Muazu, where the political situation in Delta State was critically analysed and that after the meeting, he decided to make a sacrifice by stepping down. He said, “I have to offer myself as a sacrifice to ensure that the political and security tension that had built up in recent times is reduced. In doing that I am aware that a lot of my followers will be very unhappy but I want to appeal to them that I have to do this for the sake of this state.” While denying that he was forced to step down, Mr. Uduaghan said quitting the race would enable him to concentrate on national issues and be able to properly manage the remaining primaries of the PDP and the election proper next year. Alluding to the alleged threats by the Ijaw to resume hostilities in the state should Mr. Manager, their kinsman be shortchanged in place of Mr. Uduaghan, an Itsekiri, the governor said maintaining the peace in the state was more important than electoral victories. www.metronaija.com/why-i-withdrew-from-senatorial-race-uduaghan/ |

Former military Head of State and Presidential aspirant of the All Progressive Congress (APC), General Muhammadu Buhari is supporting the impeachment moves made against President Goodluck Jonathan by the National Assembly which he said was long awaited action from the law makers. He made his position known while speaking with journalists in Dutse, capital of Jigawa State, after commissioning his presidential campaign office. According to Buhari, the impeachment process against Jonathan was long overdue, going by recent developments in the country. “I wish they will succeed,” he said. Buhari explained that “if Nigerians cannot send Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) packing, it will consume the entire country.” He said everything was functioning in the country before PDP formed government in 1999, “but today, nothing is functioning including the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) despite investing over $20 billion”. Buhari expressed concern over decay in the Nigerian Armed Forces leading to the collapsed in national security, adding that “today the country is at the verge of collapsing completely. “The Nigerian Airway, the Nigerian Shipping Line, the PHCN, the Nigerian Railway Corporation were far better off before the advent of the ruling party in 1999. But today all the structures had deteriorated and continued without any meaningful progress and the only remedy is to vote APC for the betterment of Nigeria.” The state Party chairman, Honourable Ado Sani Kiri, however assured General Buhari of the support of members in Jigawa State www.metronaija.com/i-wish-president-jonathan-is-impeached-buhari/ |
Pope Francis has condemned the deadly attacks that occurred at the emir of Kano’s Central mosque in Kano, northern Nigeria, describing it as an“extremely serious sin against God”. Pope Frances made the comments on Sunday, the final day of his trip to Turkey. At least 150 people were killed and 135 wounded when two suicide bombers blew themselves up and gunmen opened fire during weekly prayers on Friday at the Grand Mosque in Kano. In a meeting with Turkish political and religious officials, at the start of his second trip to the Middle East this year, the Pope further urged Muslim leaders to condemn the“barbaric violence”being committed in Islam’s name against religious minorities in Iraq and Syria. Pope Francis visit is aimed at improving inter-faith ties. God Of Life And Peace He reaffirmed that military force was justified to halt the Islamic State group’s advance, and called for greater dialogue between Christians, Muslims and people of all faiths to end fundamentalism. “As religious leaders, we are obliged to denounce all violations against human dignity and human rights,”Francis told Mehmet Gormez, Turkey’s top cleric and other religious officials gathered at the government-run Religious Affairs Directorate. “As such, any violence which seeks religious justification warrants the strongest condemnation because the omnipotent is the God of life and peace.” Francis condemned the“barbaric violence”by IS against Christians, Yazidis and other religious minorities and the destruction of their places of worship. The Vatican has voiced particular concern about the expulsion of Christians from communities that have had a Christian presence for 2,000 years and has demanded that they be allowed to return home in safety once the conflict settles. Francis’s three-day visit comes at a sensitive moment for Turkey, as it struggles to cope with 1.6 million refugees fleeing the IS advance in Syria and weighs how to respond to US calls to get more engaged with the international coalition fighting the extremists. Turkey has accused the group of casting a shadow over Islam and has said Muslim countries have a duty to stand up against its radical views. But Ankara is still negotiating with the US over helping the coalition, pressing for a safe haven and a no-fly zone along the Syrian border with Turkey and demanding the coalition go after Syrian president Bashar Assad’s regime. Turkey has long been accused of turning a blind eye to IS fighters entering Syria from its territory in the hope that it would hasten Assad’s downfall–charges it denies. “Those who veer away from the message of Islam–which is a call for peace–and spread violence and savagery are in a state of rebellion against Allah no matter what they call themselves,”Mr Gormez told the Pope, stressing Turkey’s opposition to the fundamentalists. The Pope’s comment is coming two days after the attack in Kano, which was alsocondemned by President Goodluck Jonathan. President Jonathan has ordered full-scale investigation into the attack, emphasising his administration’s commitment to ending the incessant attacks which the Red Cross says had left displaced over 400,000 persons. Although no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, the Boko Haram sect is the prime suspect, as the group had carried out similar attacks in the past. www.metronaija.com/pope-francis-says-kano-mosque-attack-issin-against-god/ |
According to Rep. Mohammed Tahir Monguno, President Goodluck Jonathan is to be served with impeachment notice when the House of Representatives reconvene on Wednesday. Senators and members of the House of Representatives had commenced collecting signatures for the removal of the president after the November 20 security siege on the National Assembly. During the siege, the speaker of the House Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and other lawmakers were teargased by the police. House members began collecting signatures that same day while senators followed suit two days after. And already, 200 members and about 60 senators were said to have thrown their weight behind moves to oust the president. Monguno, a former Attorney General of Borno State told Sunday Trustthat he was one of the 200 members who signed the impeachment motion on November 20, saying, “some newspapers published names of those who signed the motion but my name was conspicuously omitted.” Arguing that president Jonathan had no reason to remain in office anymore having failed to protect Nigerians against Boko Haram insurgents, Monguno said: “The federal government led by President Goodluck Jonathan has woefully failed to discharge these responsibilities. The government which is solely responsible for the security of the people has failed to protect the lives and property of my constituents. For five years now there have been consistent Boko Haram attacks in various parts of my constituency leading to the displacement of a whole local government in the constituency. Jonathan has woefully failed to provide for the security and welfare of my constituents that was why I signed the motion to oust him.”The lawmakers further accused the Jonathan administration of “monumental” corruption, saying, “for any development to take place there is the need for dividends of democracy to reach the people but because of the monumental corruption that has characterized this government, development is no longer reaching the people at the grass root and the federal government has clearly demonstrated lack of capacity to fight corruption. The executive arm of government led by President Jonathan is a massive failure. Of all the alleged constitutional breaches by the president, Monguno said the security siege on national assembly was the final stroke that broke the camel’s back hence, the move to impeach Jonathan. “We need only one third of the members of the House to serve the president impeachment notice and so far we have got far more than that so as we resume the motion will be formally tabled for the president to be notified. It is only the removal that requires two third. When we reconvene on December 3rd the president will be served impeachment notice,” he explained. www.metronaija.com/pres-jonathan-to-be-served-impeachment-notice-on-dec-3/ |
Barely 24 hours after the All Progressive Congress, APC, raised alarm that there were attempts to forcefully open the courts and called for the quick intervention of the new Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, unknown gunmen abducted the Chief Registrar of the Rivers State High Court, Mr. Leonard Adoki. Mr. Adoki was kidnapped on Sunday, in his home town, Amalem, Abua, in Abua/Odual Local Government Area of the state. The Chief Registrar was intercepted by the hoodlums while he was returning from church and whisked him to an unknown destination and no contacts have been established with the members of his family. The Rivers Police Command has confirmed the kidnap of Adoki in his home town through the Police Public Relations Officer, Ahmad Muhammad, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP). The PPRO said that two suspects had been arrested in connection with the abduction, adding that investigations were on to track down the fleeing gang members. “Efforts are on to rescue him as two suspects involved in the abduction have been arrested”. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Port Harcourt, has condemned the abduction of the chief registrar. The branch spokesman, Angus Chukwuka, described the act as an aberration, and urged the perpetrators to release him unconditionally. It would be recalled that at the peak of the crisis of who becomes the substantive Chief Judge of Rivers State between Justice Peter Agumagu and Justice Daisy Okocha, the Rivers State House of Assembly amended the state high Court vesting powers to assign cases to Judges on the Chief Registrar in the absence of the CJ. The new law however did not assuage the feelings of the a cross section of lawyers in the state and that has led to the courts been locked for about seven months now. It is not however not clear if the kidnap is politically motivated or one that criminals perpetuate in exchange for juicy ransom. www.metronaija.com/rivers-high-court-chief-registrar-abducted/ |
