President Elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari has inaugurated a 19-member transition committee with a charge to members not to engage in a witch hunt or fault finding. He also announced that his administration would not witch-hunt anybody because he was aware that government is a continuum. Buhari said this while inaugurating the Ahmed Joda-led transition committee in Abuja, on Wednesday. ADVERTISEMENT While expressing gratitude to members of the committee for accepting to serve at very short notice, he explained that the change from one government to another always involves complicated operational challenges. According to him, the incoming government needs to know where the previous government stopped so that it can know where to continue. He noted that Nigeria was blessed with outstanding men and women of competence and experience in different fields out of which his team has picked the nineteen to ensure a smooth process. Buhari told committee members, “this assignment though onerous, it is well within your ability to accomplish, you are required to assess the information provided to you and advise me on its quality and accuracy.” He also said, “It is a simple matter but you must have the right information if you are to shape appropriate policy decisions. Needless to repeat; that your committee and our government are not to witch-hunt or engage in fault finding. “We want the facts and nothing but the facts, what has been done cannot be undone, our job is to learn from the mistakes of the past in an attempt to avoid similar errors. “The time given for you to complete your assignment, two weeks, is short but because of the postponement of the election for six weeks from February 14 to March 28, the transition period has been truncated, we are obliged therefore to fast track steps to May 29.” The President elect also charged the committee to ensure that it does not overlook “essentials.” Buhari who spoke glowingly about Mallam Ahmed Joda the committee chairman, described him as one of the few surviving links of the first republic civil service to the present day. He enjoined members of the committee to be prepared to work hard because Joda is an exerting task master adding that very few young men of his age can keep up with him. Chairman of the Committee, Mallam Ahmed Joda who spoke on behalf of other members expressed appreciation to the President elect for considering them to be worthy to help prepare the ground for the incoming administration to take over smoothly on May 29, 2015. He said, “We as a committee are determined to do the best we can within the time that is allowed to accomplish your wishes and to make it possible for you to achieve your vision and all that you wish for our country. “When I met you and you briefed me about this assignment, about the composition of the committee, I did observe that I’ve never served on a committee so weighty like this. “I have people who are distinguished in their professions, who have their own enterprises and have their own businesses to look after and even serving governors and people in active service to the service of your incoming government and to the service of our motherland.” He explained to the gathering that members of the committee met for the first time on Wednesday to get to meet and know one another and plan the committee’s schedule of activities over the next two weeks. Joda also noted that members of the committee were committed and willing to work long hours even on weekends to deliver on their tasks. “I promise you that we’ll do our best because we are not only serving you, we are serving our people. We are going to try to begin to lay the foundation for a strong country where justice and peace prevail.” He said. The chairman expressed the opinion that Nigerians entrusted general Buhari with the task of healing their wounds and wiping away their tears and leading our nation to greatness because of the confidence they have in his ability. Joda also said, “I pledge every one of us will give you the best and most earnest advice from the bottom of our hearts in order that our country, together in peace and unity can realize our goals and aspirations. “I thank you once again on behalf of my members and I wish you every success, your success is our success and the success of our children and grandchildren and the citizens of Nigeria.” Members of the committee are: Ahmed Joda, Dr. Doyin Salami, Adamu Adamu,Wale Edun, Mrs. Bola Adesola, Dr. Festus Odumegu and Mrs. Nike Aboderin and the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Chief John Oyegun. At least 28 people have been reportedly killed in Ondo State by a strange disease, which broke out a few days ago, health officials in the state confirmed on Thursday. The disease broke out in Ode-Irele community of the state about three days ago and according to residents, its victim is killed within 24 hours. Preliminary reports from victims revealed the symptoms of the ailment as blindness, and loss of consciousness. Contrary to the State Health Commissioner, Dayo Adeyanju, who said 12 people have died from the disease; Ebola Alert, an evidence-driven group of volunteer professionals who helped with the Ebola Virus Disease interventions in the country put the death figure at 28. According to Adeyanju who briefed journalists in Akure on Thursday, the state capital, preliminary investigations showed that the disease is not Ebola “as it does not manifest any of its symptoms, but it attacks the central nervous system of the victims”. He assured that the state government is ensuring that the disease does not spread out of the town, as those infected are being quarantined at the General Hospital, Irele. The cause of the disease is yet to be determined. Meanwhile, leaders in the community who spoke to a journalist are attributing the ailment to a spiritual attack. “Community leaders said some people broke into a shrine and the god became angry with them, striking all those people who have hands in the act,” the journalist told Premium Times. It was reported that people in the town are performing rituals to appease the god. http://www.metronaija.com/2015/04/strange-disease-hit-ondo-kills-28.html |

Here is the presidency's response to Lai Mohammed's claim that president Jonathan is in Lagos to supervise the rigging the governorship elections Lai Muhammed is wrong to say that the President came to Lagos to rig the Gubernatorial and State House of Assembly elections scheduled for Saturday, April 11. He is of course lying as usual. And rude. President Jonathan visited Lagos. He arrived on Thursday and left on Friday. People visited him. So what? Anytime the President is in Lagos or any part of the country, a lot of people come to pay homage to him. Nothing unusual happened during his last visit to Lagos. Senator Musiliu Obanikoro's visit to the President in Lagos is not something that anybody should use to play politics. Koro is a Minister of the Federal Republic. He came to see his boss. Mr. Jimi Agbaje is the Governorship candidate of the PDP in Lagos. I don't see how his visit to the President, who is also the leader of his party, the PDP, should become an issue. Yes, Gani Adams also visited, but so did a lot of other people. The President did not hold meetings with INEC officials, he did not meet with the police, or polling officials or with anybody who is involved in organising elections. So to say that the President went to Lagos to supervise the rigging of Saturday's election is most uncharitable and cruel. After the Presidential election, the President immediately congratulated Gen. Buhari and the whole world has commended him for saving Nigeria. President Jonathan's sportsmanship, statesmanship and leadership saved this country at that critical moment. He has demonstrated his commitment to free and fair election, the rule of law and due process. He has shown that he is a man of character, honour and integrity. Nigerians generally are proud of him. He has left a worthy legacy and shown a great example. That, obviously, is the narrative that Lai Muhammed and his masters want to change, so they are now cooking up meaningless tales. Lai Muhammed should look for another target and leave the President alone. His fatuous tale does not make any sense. I repeat: we will like to advise that the APC should just leave the President alone. President Jonathan was a candidate in the presidential election; he did not rig the election. Why would he want to rig tomorrow’s elections? http://www.metronaija.com/2015/04/presidency-responds-to-apcs-claims-that.html |
Osun State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress has alleged that the Peoples Democratic Party is plotting to rig during Saturday’s House of Assembly election. APC’s Director of Publicity, Kunle Oyatomi, said in a statement on Friday that the PDP was “violently mobilising to snatch victory in 16 of the 26 House of Assembly seats, in a desperate bid to put the PDP in the comfortable position to eventually impeach the governor.” Meanwhile, the 26 lawmakers in the Osun State House of Assembly are all members of the APC. The APC has, however, vowed it would resist plans by the PDP to rig in the election. Oyatomi said, “Violence is not a component of democracy and any political party that indulges in it, as the PDP allegedly plans to do on Saturday, should be decisively contained and sanctioned by the law-enforcement agents. “Osun is peaceful and the security agencies should do everything within their power to keep the state peaceful.” However, the PDP has debunked the allegation, stating that the party is not a sponsor of violence. “We call on the people of Osun State to go to the polls en masse on Saturday and vote peacefully. They should be law-abiding and vote for whoever they want to vote for without fear,” its Publicity Secretary, Bola Ajao, said. http://www.metronaija.com/2015/04/pdp-plotting-to-impeach-governor.html |
