Im not entirely sure what multi dimensional poverty means but some people are lucky that the British decided to make Lagos capital of Nigeria, a status it enjoyed for over 80 years

If it had not been for that.........
You forgot that the South West was the first region to embrace and implement free education which led to the emancipation of millions of families. That was the key policy of Obafemi Awolowo that unlocked opportunities for people in the SW.
Even the old Bendel (Edo and Delta) benefitted and it also attracted many people from other parts of Nigeria to come and live/work in the SW. Then educational institutions, industries etc. followed.

JoeEeL:
And Fela, the founder of Afrobeats, has no songs in here?

Where is Zombie? Beast of a Nation?

=====================

Don't you guys think its time to draw the line between African songs and Afrobeats? Most of these songs here are simply African songs? 2face and Psquare's style were mostly Reggae. PSquare was doing some Pop & RnB. Abdelkareem was pure rap.

Only Wizkid's Ojuelegba is pure and refined Afrobeats. Fela and Tony Allen were the pioneers of this genre. There's a special african drum that goes with it, some percussions and usually a slow-type of beat with this special trumpet sound, and usually with some Yoruba lyrics to boot. It should be said that afrobeats lyrics tend to be socially conscious or afro-lifting.

Another pure trendy and modern afrobeat song you would find is Wande Coal's "So mi so".

Other sensational pure afrobeats songs are

Teni - "Askamaya" (extremely melodious beatz. I think Dr. Dolor or Spellz. Unbelievable beatz)
L.A.X - "Sempe" (Afrobeats on fire! Somehow underrated)
Tiwa Savage ft Wizkid - "Ma lo" (One of the most unforgettable Afrobeats collabo)
Runtown - "Energy" (Great. Some elements of Afrobeats)
Tiwa Savage - "49-99" (Traditional afrobeats)
Tiwa Savage ft Naira Marley - "Ole" - (Pure afrobeats)
Simi ft Adekunle Gold - "No forget" (Excellent afrobeats)

Wizkid ft Kuti - "Jaye Jaye"
Wizkid - "Ojuelegba" (One of the grandest)
Simi - "Joromi" (Classic afrobeats)
Fireboy - "Jealous" (Modern afrobeats)

Honourable mentions:

Skibii - "Sensima" (Experimental afrobeats)
Burna boy - "Anybody" (The intro of the song alone na afrobeats cheesy cheesy"wink

Please list more if I forgot. Thanks guys
Where is this lie coming from, that Fela founded Afrobeat? (or even the one with 's')?
For your information, Fela is not the founder of Afrobeat. But he became the most popular, the most controversial and a freedom fighter because of his exposure and vision.
When Fela came back from London after his studies, he used to do menial side plays during musical shows at NTA but he was not getting any attention or recognition.
So Fela traveled to live in Ghana 1967-69 and he joined a musical band there called Hedzolleh. He was later joined in the same band by Hugh Masakela of South Africa. That is where he (and Hugh) learnt what is now called ''Afrobeat''.
Before Fela set up his band in Nigeria, Orlando Julius (a well established Afrobeat musician at the time) voluntarily gave him 3 of his (Orlando's) band boys to help Fela start his own band. So there were other musicians playing the ''Afrobeat'' sound before Fela.
The Afrobeat sound itself is deeply rooted in Highlife (from Ghana), with a heavy dose of the saxophone, bass guitar and drums.

Oyo was founded many centuries after Ile-Ife existed. Only a fool would equate the Ooni and Alaafin.
The Oonirisa is far above Alaafin and even other Yoruba Obas and kingdoms are senior to Oyo and the Alaafin.
Oyo became respected and prominent only because of its military strength. Nothing more.
The Alaafin throne is junior to several Yoruba Obas in terms of heritage and historical pedigree.

One may say he/she is not interested or not convinced about the prospects of a stocks, but never write it off and condemn it as useless as long as the stocks is still listed on NGX.... I have witnessed many, countless examples of stocks turn around to deliver and make people multimillionaires.
Wemabank was stagnating and selling at N.50k for several years undergoing restructuring/turnaround, and not paying dividend. Today, it is N22+. That is a whooping 4000% gain.

“Oduduwa is the First Crowned King in the World” – Ooni of Ife Declares on Ilaji FM

History came alive on Saturday as the Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Babatunde Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II, took to the airwaves of Ilaji 91.9 FM with a royal revelation – Oduduwa, the first Ooni of Ife, is the very first crowned king in the entire world! 🌍👑

The revered monarch described the throne of Ile-Ife as the origin of kingship, not just in Yorubaland, but globally. According to him, “The first Ooni, Oduduwa, was not only a leader but the first crowned king in the history of mankind.”

During the special broadcast, Kabiyesi showered praises on the Okanlomo of Yorubaland, Chief Jubril Dotun Sanusi, for founding Ilaji Radio. He offered royal blessings, praying for the station to soar and become a beacon for Yoruba culture, heritage, and global influence.

When asked why he holds Ibadan so dear, the Ooni’s response was heartfelt: “Ibadan is my root. The first Ojaja was once a warlord in Ibadan. Lagelu, who founded Ibadan, came from Ile-Ife and was originally Agelu.”

The broadcast didn’t just inform—it inspired. Listeners described it as a masterclass in history, heritage, and the unbreakable bond between Ife and Ibadan. With Ilaji FM as the voice, Yoruba history is not only being preserved but also amplified for generations to come.

The JV (Agip/Conoco/NNPC) was already in existence and Agip was running it as the operator before Oando bought Conoco Philips' share in the JV.

But Oando wasn't operating the assets, they had to rely on agip, of which might not be managing it efficiently. Now Oando is in full control, let's see what they can make out of it.
Agip (the operator) was more interested in the production of gas than crude oil (because of issues of the environment, renewable clean energy etc.), although crude oil is what provides the biggest margins.
Again, Agip had higher cost profile, and as the operator, they decided on which costs to incur, and then charged a proportionate ratio to the non-operator members of the JV who had little or no say.
These were some of the explanations provided by Wale at the AGM

Celebrities › Re: Which Of These Four Legendary Artists Is Your Favorite? by mikeapollo: 11:09am On Aug 18, 2025
obembet:
These four legendary Nigerian musicians Ayinla Omowura, Haruna Ishola, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, and Sikiru Ayinde Barrister are unique because each of them pioneered and popularized different indigenous music genres that became cultural pillars in Nigeria and beyond.

Here is what makes them special in music industry

1. Ayinla Omowura – King of Apala music

Known as the most influential Apala musician. His music addressed social, political, and cultural issues. His style blended traditional Yoruba percussion with deep philosophical messages.

2. Haruna Ishola – King of Apala/Fuji precursor (Were music)

One of the earliest and most successful Apala musicians. Famous for his spiritually rooted and poetic Yoruba lyrics. He gave Apala an identity and helped it spread internationally.

3. Fela Anikulapo Kuti – Pioneer of Afrobeat

International icon and activist. Fused traditional Yoruba rhythms, jazz, highlife, and funk. Used his music to challenge political corruption and oppression in Nigeria. Afrobeat later became a global sound, influencing today’s Afrobeats.

4. Sikiru Ayinde Barrister – Pioneer of Fuji music

Transformed Were music (Islamic wake-up songs during Ramadan) into Fuji, a major Yoruba genre. Modernized Yoruba percussion with dynamic rhythms and storytelling. Regarded as the father of Fuji music, inspiring later stars like Wasiu Ayinde and Pasuma.

All four artists are cultural revolutionaries who used indigenous Yoruba musical styles to create new genres or elevate existing ones. They are considered founding fathers of Nigerian traditional/modern music, laying the foundation for today’s Afrobeat, Fuji, and Apala sounds.

So, Which of them is your favorite and why?

Source: obembe Tosin
Where did you learn that Haruna Ishola was linked in any form to Fuji music? He was not.
Barrister was not just a pioneer, he created Fuji music!

My favourites are Barrister and Fela.
But I like playing Omoruwa and Haruna when having a quarrel with madam and I want to pepper her body small with those Yoruba songs laced with some proverbs, idiomatic expressions and some eebu!
Fela travelled to Ghana and joined a band there for 2 years (1967-69) to learn Afrobeat. He was later joined in the same band by Hugh Masekela of South Africa
But he was very popular because of his activism and controversial songs in pidgin English which made his songs travel far.
There is no relationship whatsoever between Afrobeat of Fela and the so called contemporary ''Afrobeats''! The word ''Afro - beat'' only sounds nice to the ears, and it was adopted to represent the modern day African sounds.
Fela did not create Afrobeat. Even Orlando Julius started Afrobeat before Fela, and he actually gave 3 of his own band boys to Fela to help him establish his first band.

The ConocoPhillips transaction was an upstream asset
Conoco Philips was acquired in 2014 (if I'm not mistaken), and that is when Oando's struggles began, when they ventured into the Upstream business as I already mentioned in my earlier post.
As a Downstream company, they paid consistent dividend of:
i). N3 per share for 2008 to 2011;
ii).N4 per share for 2007
iii). N2-N2.50 consistently for 2001-2006.
There was a special dividend of N6 in 2008

Oando was not an ''integrated energy company'' before they acquired Conoco Philips. They became after the acquisition.

It was an integrated energy firm when the public offer was marketed 20 year ago

Also spent over $1 billion for the purchase of ConocoPhillips asset about 13 years ago, we thought that would be the game changer.

That does not mean things won't change in the future, afterall the motto of the company is " Oando- the future".
An integrated energy company is one that operates in the upstream (exploration & production), midstream (refining) and downstream (distribution) sectors of the oil and gas value chain.
The ''integrated energy company'' may be a cliche that most Nigerian oil companies like to use for PR & marketing (like how individuals make use of titles), but it could never have been a truly integrated energy company without operations in the E&P sector.
I am talking about substance rather than form.

Oando's stock price 15 years ago. When you consider time value of money, inflation and coupled with the fact that dividends were not paid for many years
That was Oando as a DOWNSTREAM company and it was paying regular dividend of N2-N4 around that time.
Oando started having problems when they transited to UPSTREAM company with the acquisituon of overvalued assets of Conocco Philips and global oil prices collapsed thereafter. They are now restructuring in order to come out of that challenge. The Upstream sector is much more capital intensive and riskier but equally more rewarding if things go well.

The same way people do evil and say ''it is devil's work'', because the devil is widely known and believed to do evil.
So, it is easy for the Indian to kidnap people and claim it was done by a Nigerian because Nigerians have been associated with kidnappings for so long:
Bottom line: It is good to be known for good conduct and behaviour; bad reputation and image is very costly.
