In a move meant to establish and consolidate his leadership, the Niger State Governor and acting National Chairman of the Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) of the All Progressives Party (APC), Abubakar Sani Bello, yesterday, announced the notice of meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party, where an official seal of the approving organ of the party would be secured.
Bello, who had since moved to stabilise the ruling party, met with members of the caretaker committee and, as part of his first set of assignments, announced the date for NEC and also the pruning down of the national convention sub-committees earlier constituted by the sacked Mai Mala Buni leadership, to accommodate other equally critical interests in the party – from the party leaders to the governors and members of the National Assembly – THISDAY gathered.
According to Villa sources, the president’s main interest is to put the party back on track and ensure that the convention holds without any fear or favour.
Meanwhile, Buni according to very reliable sources, is due back in the country tomorrow from Dubai where he had gone for medical check up. He is however expected to cooperate with the new arrangement in the interest of the party.
Also, some of the governors elected on the Party’s platform realigned for the new reality in the party. Some had immediately switched loyalty from Buni and declared support for Bello, depicting the advent of a new era.
It was an interim leadership meant to usher in a new National Working Committee (NWC) of APC on Saturday, March 26. One APC governor from the North declared triumphantly, “we are going to have our convention at last.” And osinbajo will preside over the NEC meeting, and some are saying the vp has not yet done his home work. |

A coalition of All Progresives Congress (APC) stakeholders in alliance with over 180 socio-politcal groups under the aegis of The New Tribe (TNT), have impressed it on Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, that the future of Nigeria lies in his hands to rescue from her current socio-economic travails.
“We will purchase nomination and expression of interest forms for him,” Chief Otu Ita Toyo, who read the communique at the end of the “Uyo Declaration.”
He explained that the conference, which came after the maiden assembly on the same subject in Kano, stressed that the event became neccessary as several appeals from various quarters were yet to be heeded by Pastor Osinbajo.
The groups drawn from the academia, professional bodies, political stakeholders and youths, met at the Emerald event centre and appealed to Osinbajo to heed their calls as his acceptability cut across the aged, youths and the down-trodden.
Toyo, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State, who chairs the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the event read the communique to reporters.
He said: “There are 180 support groups groups and all are calling on the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo to come and contest.”
“While we await his decision we shall intensify our drive across the country to raise partners and supporters for him. We shall equally continue the process of building structures in all the wards to bring to reality our dream of Osinbajo presidency.
“We call on all our members from across the length and breadth of Nigeria to storm Abuja on March 26 to demonstrate to the party their love and support for this patriot and nationalist.
“We call on Mr President to stand solidly behind this tested, loyal and true apostle of him and ensure that a man of conscience like him who truly abhors corruption succeeds him to continue where he stops.”
According to the communique the Uyo declaration which was sequel to the Kano declaration and the acceptance of the vision of the “New Tribe” further resolved to “align with the Kano Declaration” to mobilise funds to purchase the APC expression of interest and nomination forms for Prof Yemi Osinbajo in furtherance of our total commitment to the noble course of compelling the Vice President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo to contest for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
It also resolved to carry out a thorough appraisal of current political trends in APC and INEC timetable and engage more prominent Nigerians, the Academia, Civil Society groups and national delegates of the party, Professional bodies, Religious Leaders, Youths and Women Organisations on the need to elect this competent and reliable Nigerian with proven track record, integrity, transparency and honesty in the person of Prof Yemi Osinbajo as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in order to realise the vision of Nigerians.

Indications emerged on Thursday that the All Progressive Congress APC presidential ticket is still open to all contestants in the South West, South East and South-South.
Governor Nasir El-Rufai dropped this hint on Thursday while briefing Journalists at the Media briefing organized by the Presidential Media team, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The Governor while responding to questions on the zoning of the party approved by President Mohammadu Buhari on Tuesday, revealed, however, that the zoning arrangements was to send signals about the party’s direction
“ What we have done with the zoning we presented to Mr President on Tuesday and which he approved, is sending a signal about the directions of the party, it is not about zoning the Presidency to anyone yet. But we have sent the signal.
The Governor who confirmed that the Presidency has been zoned to the South added that “ It is not zoned to any particular place in the South. But we are waiting to see who the aspirants are. A few people have declared their interest. We are waiting.
“I want to clarify that the APC zoning arrangements that we announced are the zoning arrangements for the party.
He disclosed that the party had always done that in the last three elections that it had.
“When we elected John Oyegun as chairman, we had this zoning arrangement. Each of the six zones had offices allocated to them. We also carried that along when we elected Adams Oshimhole as our National Chairman.
“All we did now is to flip it. Since the chairman is going to be from North Central, it means that the North Central will take all the positions of South-South. If you check, you will see that all the positions allocated to the North Central were the positions held by the South-South under Oyegun and Oshiomhole.
Similarly, he revealed that all the positions held by North West went to the South East and vice versa.
Under the new arrangements, all the positions held by North West will be going to the South East and those held by the North East will go to the South West.
“That is why the South West will produce the Party’s National Secretary.
“We are not talking about the Presidency yet. When we do this convention and elect our national officers, then we start preparing for the party convention that will produce our candidates for National Assembly and the Presidency. That is when that conversation will come up”
Speaking on whether he will support a South West candidate, el- Rufai said he will support any qualified candidate from the south.
“I will support any APC candidate if I am satisfied that he will do the best for Nigeria. It doesn’t matter if he is from South West, South East, South-South. APC and the quality of the person us what matters.
He however added that only the President’s decision will influence his choice in exceptional cases
“All I can tell you is that unless in an exceptional situation, whoever President Buhari tells me, this is the person I want, that is where I am going, because I trust his judgement.
“Now, if I disagree, I will go into the room and tell him. We have done that a few times and he knows. If he still insists that Nasir, I have heard you, but this is what I want, I will say ok. I will do it”
On his ambition for 2023, the Kaduna Governor whose second term ends in 2023, denied having other ambitions aside from writing books.
El- Rufai revealed how the President had in 2014 forced him to contest the governorship election against his own will
“ I have zero ambition, I just want to finish this job and get on with my private life, write another book, and make tons of money. The largest amount of money I ever got in my life was writing the “ Accidental Public Servant” and it is still selling.
“So, I have never had any ambition. If I die today, I am satisfied, accomplished and happy because I never in my life, based on my humble background, ever thought that I would even enter this building ( the Presidential Villa). How would I ever enter the office where the President is? So, for me, even being here is a privilege if you know my background.
“God has been very kind to me and my outings in public service have all been satisfactory and why push my luck and even with a job with 90percent of failure.
“I am not an ambitious person. I am just a person that gets things done when given the opportunity.
“That is why I have never lobbied for a job, or desired any. Even this Governorship, it was President Mohammadu Buhari that literally forced me to run.
“I wasn’t interested in it. I just wanted us to defeat former President Goodluck Jonathan and I will come to the Villa and enjoy myself.
He declared that his intention was to serve as special adviser ( domestic) to the President.
“ Anytime they are flying to New York, I will be there. That was my ambition, I would not have had grey hairs. The President insisted that some of us must go and run for Governorship, just in case he did not get elected again. He felt that we needed some strong Governors, those were the words he used. I was forced into this.
“I never desired to be Minister of the FCT. Obasanjo just called me and said he wanted me to be the Minister,

I never disputed that they didn't have governors that were with ANPP before the merger, what I am trying to bring out is cpc and ANPP are almost the same because buhari was with ANPP until when he realised he might be riged in the primaries and he left to form CPC, his people in ANPP never left him, anyway that is why you don't hear people talk about ANPP in apc, you will even hear apga but not ANPP. Everybody knows that Yorubas are highly tribalistic. A Tinubu or Osibanjo presidency will be an opportunity to fill all the positions in Nigeria with Yorubas.
