bantudra: through hard work..just like me and you.... Tell me more about this 'hard work' - why would people who work so hard be so eager to receive free money from resources from other parts of the country? Why would they constantly kick against anything that looks like federalism if they are earning theirs via 'hard work'? |

Reference: Oga. Go to the homes of the greater percentile of those students and you will see similar open 'firewood fueled' kitchens. These are not well to do societies and education for them is not a right, but a privilege most cannot afford. That government pays a premium to feed them is so they can be educated so you don't expect the government to construct a gourmet kitchen, employ five star chefs and serve 6 course meals. Be realistic. The amount that is wasted on hajj is more than enough to build and sustain a clean kitchen environment in all of these schools. People talk about wanting to provide jobs - building, maintaining and cleaning school kitchens are employment. The purpose of education is to elevate the mind and the individual not to have them languishing in the same squalor that they were born into. It begins with the environment, ensuring that it is cleaner than that which they are used to. Besides, do you think that this governor has a kitchen like this in his home? Or that he sends his children to school where they are fed from such a setting? |

blacks dont like cold food and red meat..we are not esau... Stop talking nonsense please. Just because something has been like that in the past does not mean that you must continue doing something that is wrong. We know that is an unsanitary environment. We know that the likelihood of illness is increased in such a setting. So why not embrace the knowledge that we have and improve the way of doing things? Also, you do not know what 'blacks' like, you are not qualified to speak for 'blacks'. If what you were saying were true there would be no Cold Stone in Nigeria or any other ice cream parlor. bantudra: kitchens and kantines always look like this in nigeria, but you never hear people falling dead because of it....
you nigerians abroad always want everything to look like in europe..... They don't always look like this. I know plenty of kitchens and canteens that are sanitary in Nigeria. Keeping a neat environment is not about making somewhere look like someplace else, it is about health and hygiene. That image is disgusting. And yes, people do indeed fall ill as a result of unsanitary food preparation and storage. But you keep deceiving yourself, I'm sure you think that when many of these people die young it is because of 'witches' and 'wizards' and other such nonsense and not because of germs and disease that thrive in environments such as the one depicted. |

willibounce1: Oga a lot of igbo people don't bear igbo names especially in Lagos. You hear names like, Cindy, favour, wisdom, how's hyginus, longinus, Zara, beauty, flower, John, jerry, and all sorts or funny English names. They are not proud of their igbo names.
But it is highly impossible for any language to go.into extinction. If you go to alaba or ladipo, you see a lot of people speaking igbo let alone going to the south East. No language will go into extinction I meet so many people called 'Favor' it is ridiculous. I really don't like when people translate names from their native tongue into English - it actually makes the parents look like bush people. 'Favor', 'Wisdom', 'Praise' etc all sound stupid to me. I imagine the names sound more eloquent in Igbo. 1 Like |

He may be exaggerating but I do meet a lot of Igbos with 'English' names. If their parents didn't give it to them they will adopt one on their own - especially the women in Lagos and Abuja. They'll even ask you what your 'English' name is if you have an African name. I often ask them why the expect Africans to have English names. |
Career › Re: Certification Or Degree? by mmsen: 7:54am On Mar 30, 2017 |
aikyg: Degree is always better in IT. It shows that you are disciplined enough to go through a five year academic exercise. One major thing people learn in the university is how to solve problems. That's why you spend five years reading books, writing quizzes/exams and executing projects. Get a degree, it is very important. You don't learn how to solve problems by sitting through lectures or classes, you learn by doing. If I'm looking for a programmer I'm looking to see past projects not how much time you spent sat in class. |

identified: I dont think that is Talcum powder. The dirt/dusty and dry weather in the north coupled with not bathing and applying body lotion causes that. Dirt isn't usually white, it's usually earthen color. Your would see a more brown color than the white that you see on these kids bodies. If you look down on their opened shirts you can see that it is talcum because someone has also applied it onto their chests. |

Yuneehk: I can totally relate. I grew up not knowing how to speak just Igbo at home and I'm certain most Igbos in the West were just like me. My church with mainly Igbos probably knew this and started Igbo lessons inside the church premises. They urged parents to release their wards so they could attend too and that was where I first learnt the Igbo Alphabets.
Moving on to Senior secondary school, I stopped offering Yoruba and switched to Igbo language and even wrote it in WAEC(how I passed is something I still can't fathom )
I was sent far away to the east to further my education and that was when I took learning Igbo seriously. I had roommates from Enugu, Nnewi, Owerri and even Ngwa Little by little I started learning though I sounded funny because some spoke their dialects and not central Igbo(Igbo Izugbe) and that was how I learnt.
Now if I'm conversing with any Igbo person, I use Igbo. Makes the whole thing fun and at the same time, I get to master the language since practice brings about perfection. I won't make the same mistake my folks made. My children must learn Igbo. The Yorubas do it so we should too. I'm not ashamed of my place and I'm proudly Igbo There are Yorubas who are the same, especially in Lagos - they speak English to their children so that they will be comfortable with the language at school. I just hope that all you people who proclaim to be so proud of your languages realize that the only way to keep them around is to make them useful. Ensure that real knowledge is transferred in your local languages rather than superstition and taboo. Translate vital books into your languages and they might last a bit longer but ultimately many of them will die off. Language is a medium of exchange that will only last so long as it is useful. 5 Likes 1 Share |

Wat am tryin to say abt d lies in assertion is dat the northerners are nt encourage to go to schools, u guys need to stop that lies pls. It is high time. I have been in d north for over 25 years and see how their political and religious leaders campaign vigorously for dem to gk to school. They are well encourage to d extend that we non indigene get jealous of dem. Many of my colleagues are nw masters holders and some doing their PHD now courtesy of kwankwaso that sponsored them immediately after our NYSC in 2012, both male and female, single and married. I don't worship the US or the UK. Most people in the south are sent to school, that is opposite of what happens in the north where the priority seems to be reciting the Quran. I'm glad that they are finally making moves to educate the populace but their culture has caused many problems for Nigeria and continues to do so. |

Y nt come to d universities in d north and see thousands upon thousands if dem in school reading different courses. Just leave ur cocoon and see things u never expect in d north. I think it is high time these lies are stop. Chimamanda Adichie said it in her presentation of Danger of a single story. So Boko Haram appeared from nowhere? Or was it Igbo men and Yorubas who joined forces to take over Sambisa forest abi? It wasn't the people who are resident in that region? Who is lying to whom? The illiteracy rate in the north averages well over 50%. Just a few years ago there was a report that Northern Nigeria had the largest number of out of school children in the entire world. Even the boys are not sent to school speak less of the girls who are sold off to be abused by grandpas. |

Do not despise the days of little beginnings.
Let me close my discussion with this quote: "As man is, God once was. As God is, Man may be." It's not being funny it's about order and civility, Nigerians will cry about a lack of order, discipline and protocol but ignore the citizens who push for those traits. Another thing is that the average citizen makes horrendous decisions, in their personal lives and at the voting booth - the two are interlinked. Silly people who cannot cater for themselves are breeding recklessly and thus forced to put themselves and their unfortunate children in harms way in order to feed, clothe and educate them. Again, when enlightened Nigerians talk sense to them they're typically told to shut up or that things such as birth control, family planning or even a rational marriage age (in the north) are counter to the culture. Nevermind that the culture is causing death and suffering. Hopefully the next time politicians come to them demanding votes they ask for something besides rice and hand outs. In the mean time let them find somewhere to live that doesn't entail occupying land that does not belong to them. |
