PoliticsBayelsa: Military Rigging For Apc In Southern Ijaw – Pdp by Monimatic(op): 4:34pm On Dec 06, 2015
The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the military of rigging the rerun governorship election in Southern Ijaw local government area of Bayelsa State for the All Progressives Congress (APC). The governorship election in the local government, was last Saturday, rescheduled to Sunday by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over security concerns. However, as the election got underway yesterday, the PDP claimed that a Major, which it did not name, was behind a rigging process for the APC, noting that the military officer has handed most of the sensitive materials to APC agents to fill and return as results in the evening. The statement by PDP national publicity secretary, Olisa Metuh, read in part “hereby alerts all concerned that the APC and the military have connived to rig the elections in Southern Ijaw local government area of Bayelsa State. “This rigging is being coordinated by the same Army Major who supervised the killings yesterday. The Major has handed most of the sensitive materials to APC agents to fill and return as results in the evening. “Southern Ijaw local government area is the largest in the state and the APC wants to use this scheme to inflate result figures in favour of their candidate.”

PoliticsBiafra Protest "Completely Legitimate" - Nigerian Government by Monimatic(op): 1:40pm On Dec 06, 2015
The federal government has described the agitations by some Nigerians, largely in the South-East, as “completely legitimate.”

There have been mass protests by Igbos in South-East Nigeria for an independent country of Biafra.

The protests have sometimes gone violent with reported deaths of about six people, allegedly at the hands of security officials

The protests got worse following the arrest and prosecution of Nnamdi Kanu, the promoter of Radio Biafra, a pirate radio the Nigerian government accuses of spreading hate and violence.

The Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, who spoke on the agitations, however said the basic cause of it was “economic” which would have gotten worse but for the efforts of the current administration.

Speaking at a News Agency of Nigeria Forum in Abuja at the weekend, Mr. Mohammed appealed to leaders in the country not to exploit the economic situation to further destabilise Nigerians.

He also urged Nigerian leaders to be courageous enough to come out and defend the unity of the country even though “in the short term it might be politically fashionable for them to be on the side of some agitators.”

The minister, who noted that current agitations by citizens were “completely legitimate,” assured of the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the economy.

PoliticsTinubu Insists On Faleke For The Kogi Supplementary Election by Monimatic(op): 6:35am On Nov 30, 2015
There were indications last night that leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) were still divided over the choice of Alhaji Yahaya Bello as the party’s candidate for next Saturday’s supplementary governorship election in Kogi State.

While the national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu and a group loyal to him in the party are insisting that Yahaya Bello’s name be withdrawn for Hon James Faleke (late Prince Abubakar Audu’s running mate) following the submission of Bello’s name by the party last Friday to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), other party chieftains have kicked against this saying Bello’s choice and subsequent nomination be maintained.

This is coming just as the INEC has given the APC until tomorrow to present a replacement for its late governorship candidate, Prince Abubakar Audu, for the Kogi supplementary election.

LEADERSHIP had on Saturday reported that Bello who came second during the party’s governorship primaries on August 29, 2015 was chosen by the party to replace the late Audu after the demise of the governorship candidate, following INEC’s declaration of the Kogi governorship poll inconclusive.

It was gathered last night that although Bello had been nominated and his name submitted to INEC late Friday evening, some powerful stakeholders in the APC want his name replaced with that of late Audu’s running mate, Hon. James Faleke.

It was learnt that the bid by the party to present Bello as its new candidate reached a stalemate yesterday when leader of the party and former Lagos State Governor, Bola Tinubu was said to have insisted that it was either Faleke or no one else stepped into the late Audu’s shoes.

A reliable source in the party told LEADERSHIP that when it became glaring that Tinubu and other stakeholders angling for Faleke would not budge an inch, the national chairman of the party, Chief John Oyegun told them that with their fixed position, the development indicates that the APC might end up not having any candidate for the Kogi supplementary governorship election slated for this Saturday.

The source, a senior party official, who sought anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the matter, told LEADERSHIP last night that if care was not taken, the party may yield to the pressure by the stakeholders who are insisting on Faleke’s candidacy because of the allegation against Bello that he is a mole in the APC working for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He said, “The argument being canvassed now is that it should not be Bello because he allegedly worked against the late Audu’s bid to become governor. There is so much pressure on us to withdraw Bello’s candidacy in view of the crisis that the choice has generated as well as the fierce protest it is causing in Kogi State.

“Right now, we are at a crossroad because nothing has divided the party like the choice of governorship candidate for the Kogi supplementary poll. Our only saving grace is that INEC has given the party till Tuesday (tomorrow) to take a final stand on the matter.

“As we speak, national leader of the party, Asiwaju Tinubu and his group are insisting on the withdrawal of Yahaya Bello, while another group supporting Bello are also kicking that Bello’s nomination remained. The chairman is presently confused and threatening to withdraw Bello’s name and Falake’s thereby leaving the party without any candidate,” our source said.

The party stakeholders insisting on Faleke’s candidacy are contending that he deserves it because he was everywhere with the late Audu campaigning vigorously for the election, and that it would be unfair to deny him what he laboured for and favour someone who was even working against the APC candidate and the party’s interest.

INEC gives tomorrow as deadline
Meanwhile, INEC has given APC Tuesday (tomorrow) deadline to present a replacement for its late governorship candidate, Prince Abubakar Audu, for the Kogi State supplementary election on December 5.

This was disclosed by INEC’s director of voter education and publicity, Mr Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi. He also said he is unaware that a replacement has been submitted by the APC over the weekend.

INEC had last Tuesday granted the APC permission to fill the vacancy created by the death of Audu, same day it declared that the supplementary governorship election will hold on December 5.

The commission, while acknowledging that the party has officially written to it over the demise of its governorship candidate, notified the 22 political other parties that participated in the November 21 election of the date for the supplementary poll.

When asked if the APC has submitted a replacement ahead of the supplementary election, Osaze-Uzzi said, “I am not aware”. He however disclosed that Tuesday was the deadline given to the APC to submit its replacement for its late candidate

PoliticsWe Will Wipe Out Shiite Muslims , Says Boko Haram by Monimatic(op): 6:59pm On Nov 28, 2015
Boko Haram on Saturday claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing on a Shiite Muslim procession near the northern Nigerian city of Kano that killed 22 people . The hardline Islamist group said in a statement in Arabic on social media its bomber “ detonated his explosives which led to the death” of the victims on Friday . “ And by the permission of Allah these attacks of ours against Shi ’ a polytheists will continue until we cleanse the earth of their filth , ” it warned . At least 21 people were initially reported killed but the toll rose after one more person was confirmed dead . “ For now , we have 22 deaths following the death of one more person yesterday . Thirty- eight people have also been injured , two of whom have been discharged from the hospital , ” one of the organisers of the march Ali Kakaki told AFP Saturday . He said that , despite the attack on Friday , the Islamic Movement of Nigeria members had continued their march from Kano to Zaria in neighbouring Kaduna state, where their leader Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky is based . The march is to mark Ashura , which commemorates the death of Hussein , the grandson of the Prophet Mohammed . “ Following the attack , many more of our members have joined the procession , ” Kakaki said , adding that they aimed to arrive at their destination next week . Friday ’ s attack took place in the village of Dakasoye, some 20 kilometres (13 miles ) south of the city of Kano . One of the procession ’ s organisers said a bomber clad in black ran into the crowd and detonated his explosives . Boko Haram , the radical Sunni jihadists who want to create a hardline Islamic state in northeast Nigeria , has previously been blamed for attacks on Shia Muslims in the region . Boko Haram , whose six - year insurgency has left at least 17 , 000 people dead and made more than 2 . 6 million homeless , condemns Shias as heretics who should be killed . The group has increasingly used suicide bombers against “ soft” civilian targets since the start of a military offensive earlier this year that pushed them out of territory they controlled. Nigeria ’ s President Muhammadu Buhari has given his military commanders until next month to end the conflict but there are fears that suicide and bomb attacks may persist .
