Travel › Blackout At Murtala Muhammed Int'l Airport As Airlines Use Torchlights by moonraker(op): 4:23am On Sep 06, 2016 |
A power outage has left the entire Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos in darkness since Saturday evening. This has forced departing and arriving passengers to board and disembark aircraft with torchlights. A SaharaReporters correspondent who was at the airport till 10pm on Saturday observed that all the wings of the airport, including the terminal, were in total darkness with only backup light illuminating the background of the terminal. Due to the outage, the automated equipment at the airport has not been functioning, forcing security agencies to profile and screen passengers manually. On Saturday evening, KLM passengers were forced to board the plane with the aid of torchlights, while staff of other departing carriers like Delta Air Lines, British Airways and Lufthansa either used light from their phones or torches to profile and board passengers without proper assessment. Also, passengers of the early morning flights that arrived the airport all used the ramp instead of fingers to disembark. Such passengers included those who flew Arik Air (London and New York), Virgin Atlantic from London and Air Maroc. A staff of one of the airlines lamented on Sunday that the outage had lasted for days, but became worse on Saturday. He described the situation as a disgrace to Nigeria, noting that some of the passengers were visiting the country for the first time. He urged the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to address the epileptic power supply to the airport, especially the international wing. “The situation has been like this for several days, but it reached its climax yesterday as the entire terminal was thrown into a thick darkness. In fact, workers of KLM Airlines had to use torchlights to profile and board their passengers. “Also, this morning, we had to use the ramp to disembark our passengers. The same happened to Air Maroc, Virgin Atlantic and other early morning flights," the source stated. He added that some passengers had to UnCloth before security agents for security screening. Also on Sunday, SaharaReporters observed that some of the airlines have started bringing in generating sets to power their operations. Air France and KLM Airlines resorted to generating sets to power their ramp offices. A source close to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) told SaharaReporters that some early arrivals such as Virgin Atlantic, Air Maroc and Arik Air were diverted to local runways by the air traffic controllers on duty. “For now, airlines can make use of the international runway for landing because they operate visual flight (6am to 6pm), but for their night operations (6pm to 6am), they will have to make use of a local runway, which is shorter and not adequate for the international airlines,” disclosed the source. http://saharareporters.com/2016/08/28/blackout-murtala-muhammed-intl-airport-airlines-use-torchlights-profile-board-passengersVery Shameful |

TheGoodJoe: Enlightening. Learnt something new but in the case of the Dream Team, I doubt the Japanese Billionaire can use that for Tax claims. Considering we are operating on similar laws of the US.
Look at this article of the couple.
http://reveilletax.com/blog/deduction-denied-tithes-and-offerings
No time to dig deep into the matter. However, there is a kind of in place to assist bodies that assist. There is a filing system for this. From the points so far, I do not see how the Dream Team can qualify for Tax claims. as a resident of Japan who files taxes on a yearly bases, donations do not count. It is alone income earned and sent that are taxable. you get tax deductions from donations etc. When the Japanese doctor is filing his taxes sometime in december, he might include that expenditure to get a reduction of tax for next year.. |

Tarry: I must say that I am greatly saddened by the economics woes of this country and the hardship it has caused the people but I am also saddened with the ignorance that is highly on display on this thread. Simple fact is that Nigeria problem is caused by the twin factors of decline in the price of crude oil which is about 90% of Nigeria source of dollar and the economic sabotage by some people from the Niger Delta which has reduced our daily oil production. Do people expect Buhari to manufacture dollar. Nigeria problem is not down to any poor policy but the reality of the time. Many of those condemning Buhari have not been able to fix the hardship their families are facing occasioned by the situation in the land and they are crucifying the government for not remedying the hardship in the land cause by factors beyond the government control. If any government is to be blamed it should be the last regime that fail to save during the time of oil boom and also depleted the reserve. This present government met about 30 billion dollars in reserve and has resisted the temptation to devour the reserve like the previous regime still retaining over 27 billion even in the face of scarcity of dollar. Although one could argue that they should use the reserve to ease the hardship that the people are facing right now but then we might just be postponing the evil days. What is on display is simply the case of zombies calling others zombies because many people here just jump on the bandwagon without analyzing the situation. The solution to Nigeria problem is to find a way to increase our dollar earning and this is not a day's job. what previous regime has not done in decades you expect this regime to do in one year.
I know times are really hard and this has made many to condemn this regime for not releasing money into the economy, but can you imaging what will become of the Naira if there is more money in circulation. Yes I agree that this regime need to release money into the economic as we are facing recession and the economy is shrinking but we need to first balance our export and import ration or else we should be prepare to see Naira at 1000 to a dollar.
I believe this regime will come out good but it is going to take some time and we need patience because of the terrible state of the economy that was inherited by this regime. Don't forget dollar started falling before this regime came on board. Likewise most of the problem we are currently facing have started manifesting before the exit of the last regime, though without doubt they have worsen but it is going to take some time to reverse it unless we just suddenly experience oil boom again.
On a final note, I am not a politician or an APC apologist but I am an objective person and this is what I see. Are you kidding me?? Did you just type all that?? |

DropShot: Only pragmatic and analytical minds will agree with you pastor.
Let's do a simple and quick analogy:
1. I earned N100k monthly for five years. After spending on family needs and other things, I should have N20k left for savings.
2. The N20k I should keep on monthly basis in those five years, I didn't keep it but was using it on frivolities.
3. Suddenly my salary got reduced to N40k for some reason.
Will I still be able to provide for all the needs of my family as I used to when salary was N100k? Common sense should tell me and those around me that I will struggle BIG TIME while looking for alternative ways out.
Even if a wife expects her husband to still meet such needs after knowing the facts above, people around her will condemn and criticize her for not showing understanding as well as lacking perseverance.
Nigerians need to give the government reasonable time and put things in perspective of the times we are.
Only quote me if you have evidence-backed argument to offer. Not the usual inanities. Good, except your seeing things from one angle... What about the common man on the streets that has sought change for a long time.. pretty sure he or she doesnt hve such luxury as your clear flawed analogy has shown. Again, Nigeria isnt going to change over night, however there are policies that need to be laid down by the government to give hope to the people that elected them that things will eventually change. Frm where i am seated, i dont see that confident booster. If you need evidence, look at your athletes at the just concluded olympics. Yet, everyone were expecting them to win Gold medals?? shior |

Its really easy for some random person to put stuff together on what to do or not to do..
But we have to realize that speeches or write ups are quite different from the actual reality.
With that being said, kudos to the OP for the write up.
The real question here is that "where do we go from here". What steps does one need to take to make sure that you are on the right path to follow
what the OP has written. This is the real question. |
