Politics › Tinubu Vows To Proceed On Qatar Trip Despite Rejection Of Business Summit by Morbeta11(op): 11:21am On Feb 25, 2024 |
Tinubu vows to proceed on Qatar trip despite rejection of business summit
The Qatari government rejected Mr Tinubu’s proposed visit for a business parley on March 2 and 3.
Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has insisted that President Bola Tinubu will proceed with his planned visit to Qatar, refusing to comment on a Note Verbale, where Qatari authorities communicated their unwillingness to welcome the Nigerian leader on the scheduled date.
Francisca Omayuli, the ministry’s spokesperson, released a statement on Saturday that read, “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirms the forthcoming visit by His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the State of Qatar on 2-3 March, as scheduled.”
The foreign affairs minister, Yusuf Tuggar, said Qatar and Nigeria are strong allies with a “long history of friendship and close bilateral relations,” adding that
Mr Tinubu’s upcoming visit to Doha “will help build on this important relationship.”
The ministry, according to Ms Omayuli, was aware that the diplomatic memo expressing Qatar’s unwillingness to host the Nigerian leader had been leaked to the media, but it would not comment on “leaks.”
“The Ministry is aware of the circulation in the media of diplomatic correspondence and wishes to confirm that it will not comment on leaks,” the spokesperson said.
Peoples Gazette had earlier reported that the Qatari government rejected Mr Tinubu’s proposed visit for a business parley on March 2 and 3 because the nation’s commerce minister would be outside the country on the days the Nigerian leader intended to visit.
Qatari authorities in the Note Verbale also stated that they had no signed agreement with Nigeria on investment promotion and protection.
“The embassy has the honour to inform that the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in Qatar apologises that it will not be able to hold a business and investment forum as proposed by the Nigerian side,” the Note Verbale sent by the Qatari government to the Nigerian government on Thursday stated. https://gazettengr.com/tinubu-vows-to-proceed-on-qatar-trip-despite-rejection-of-business-summit/

Politics › Despite Sending Wife Regina Daniels $100,000, Ned Nwoko Calls For Dollar Ban In by Morbeta11(op): 7:17pm On Feb 24, 2024 |
Despite sending wife Regina Daniels $100,000, Ned Nwoko calls for dollar ban in Nigeria to stem economic crisis
Mr Nwoko’s wife is notable for flaunting dollars sent by the senator or other family members.
Ned Nwoko, the senator representing Delta North, has prescribed the ban on dollars as a necessary measure to halt the economic crisis assailing the nation, which has seen one dollar rise to nearly N2000, driving up the cost of goods and services.
During Friday’s National Assembly plenary, Mr Nwoko proposed that the House forbid the use of dollars for transactions since Nigeria’s excessive reliance on foreign exchange was hurting the naira and impeding its growth in the global market.
“We must understand that we have relegated the naira to the background. Everybody is talking about dollars, and the dollar is causing the problem,” the lawmaker lamented. “It might be a difficult thing to contemplate, but what has to be done is that we have to stop the use of dollars in Nigeria.”
But the lawmaker’s suggestion runs afoul of his sixth wife and actress, Regina Daniels’ patronage of Nigerian vendors who charge dollars for their products.
Mr Nwoko’s wife is notable for flaunting dollars sent by the senator or other family members on her social media pages. This has raised questions about his call for the dollar ban in Nigeria.
On her last birthday in October 2023, Mrs Nwoko showed off her luxurious hair sourced from a famous Nigerian vendor who sells in dollars.
In January 2023, the Nollywood actress also posted a $100,000 credit transaction from Mr Nwoko, showering him with praise for funding her account with the foreign currency.
“I can’t believe an alert of $100,000 was sitting pretty in my account since yesterday afternoon, and I’m just discovering this. My husband has lots of mind-blowing doings up his sleeve; mehnnnnn thank you, baby,” Mr Nwoko’s sixth wife posted on her Instagram last year January.
In 2022, Mrs Nwoko similarly received a dollar money tree of eight tiers from her mother, Rita Daniels, who engaged the services of a luxury surprise vendor to arrange the dollars as a gift for her. https://gazettengr.com/despite-sending-wife-regina-daniels-100000-ned-nwoko-calls-for-dollar-ban-in-nigeria-to-stem-economic-crisis/

Christianity Etc › Pastor Adeboye, Like Other Nigerian Religious Leaders, Have Not Risen Above Ethn by Morbeta11(op): 7:20am On Feb 24, 2024 |
Pastor Adeboye, Like Other Nigerian Religious Leaders, Have Not Risen Above Ethnic Sentiments –Prof. Nimi Wariboko
Prof. Wariboko made the remarks during an exclusive interview with Rudolf Okonkwo on 90MinutesAfrica on Sunday.
Distinguished Walter G. Muelder Professor of Social Ethics at Boston University, USA, Nimi Wariboko, has said the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has not yet risen above ethnic sentiments in his interventions.
Prof. Wariboko made the remarks during an exclusive interview with Rudolf Okonkwo on 90MinutesAfrica on Sunday.
"The idea that our religious leaders have risen beyond ethnicity and certain sectional feelings is something we need to question," the author of "Transcripts of the Sacred in Nigeria: Beautiful, Monstrous, Ridiculous" said.
"Once we begin to question it, the result is not going to surprise us. Why are we not asking questions that when these religious leaders get the word of God to set up a university, they always will set up those universities in their own region or close to their own place, whereas for the money that would build those universities; the good Lord would mobilise them from all over Nigeria," a one-time leading pastor at RCCG said.
"But when it comes to siting those universities, even if it is a second one, it will always go to their ethnic areas," he continued. "Are we surprised also that they are positioning their children for leadership succession in the churches? These should tell us that these men and women have not risen beyond, sometimes the worst of, our cultures."
The author of over a dozen books also said that the RCCG General Overseer had set himself up for accusations of ethnicity when he went out in protest to force a change during the administration of a past president who was from a different ethnic group but now interprets Nigeria's problems as a spiritual one when a president of his ethnic extraction is in power.
He, therefore, advised religious leaders and other public figures to think through their actions and be sensitive to the public perception.
"If you want to do something, think about the future and how to be consistent," he admonished.
Pastor E A. Adeboye has come under public criticism on social media recently over a viral video where he was heard saying that the problems of Nigeria are spiritual and the solution is to call on God Almighty to come to the aid of the nation.
However, Wariboko, a former journalist in Lagos and the author of "Economics in Spirit and Truth: A Moral Philosophy of Finance," said that people should look away from Adeboye and look at what is generally wrong with Nigeria’s religious system that causes it to be captured by the worst elements of our culture, instead of improving the culture.
"In Nigeria, we don't always like to scrutinize our men and women of God because we are afraid that God will strike us dead.
“So we then put them on a pedestal, and when they say something like this, we then pretend to be shocked while we know that oftentimes, the matters of the church are still driven by basic human and ethnic sentiments," the ex-Wall Street investment banker said. https://saharareporters.com/2024/02/22/pastor-adeboye-other-nigerian-religious-leaders-have-not-risen-above-ethnic-sentiments#google_vignette

Politics › Hardship: Follow Davido Example, Olajengbesi Tells Dangote, Otedola, Others by Morbeta11(op): 4:33am On Feb 23, 2024 |
Abuja-based human rights lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi, has urged billionaires in the country to come to the aid of hungry Nigerians by making donations similar to their magnanimity during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
In a statement on Wednesday, Olajengbesi, the Managing Partner of Abuja-based law firm, Law Corridor, commended afrobeats singer, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, over his plans to donate the sum of N300 million through his David Adeleke Foundation (DAF) to orphanages across the country.
Olajengbesi said, “Our dear country is going through one of the toughest times in history, economically, no thanks to the policies of the new government. Multinationals are exiting the country, thousands of jobs lost. There is hunger in the land. And as the saying goes, an hungry man is an angry man, hence, the protests spreading over the country as demonstrators express displeasure over the hardship in the land.
“It’s time for our billionaires and respected business moguls in the private sector to step in and provide succour for our teeming citizens, just like they graciously did during the COVID-19 pandemic. Singer Davido announced a N300m donation to orphanages on Tuesday. This is a good development that should be emulated by the privileged few. History won’t forget the benevolent. God bless Nigeria.”
Nigerians are going through untold economic hardship occasioned by the petrol subsidy removal and the escalating food inflation. Food prices and costs of basic commodities have skyrocketed, sparking protests across some cities in the country.
The hardship currently experienced in the country is akin to that suffered during the coronavirus pandemic four years ago that saw the philanthropic gestures of billionaires such as Aliko Dangote, who rose to the occasion by collaborating with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to lead the Private Sector Coalition Against COVID-19 (CACOVID). https://leadership.ng/hardship-follow-davido-example-olajengbesi-tells-dangote-otedola-others/
