Politics › Indigenes Are Inviting Herdsmen From Niger – Benue Governor, Hyacinth Alia by Morbeta11(op): 11:34am On Feb 20, 2024
Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has raised the alarm that some indigenes of the state are importing herdsmen from neighbouring countries like the Niger Republic to destabilise his administration.

The governor stated this on Sunday at the Chapel of Grace, Government House, Makurdi, the state capital, while addressing the people of the state.

According to a statement issued by the Principal Special Assistant on Print Media, Donald Kumun, and made available to journalists late Sunday, the governor appealed to the people to remain calm, saying that the security agencies would ensure the safety of the people.

Alia revealed that those behind the influx of herdsmen into the state wrote letters inviting them to come to the state.

Bandits killed four people at Ikobi in the Apa Local Government Area of Benue State in a renewed attack.

The incident, according to a community leader, Atule Amodu, happened on Wednesday night.

The bandits were reported to have invaded the sleepy village where they killed four people.

The state government and the leadership of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria in the state were reportedly on the verge of reaching a truce.

A peace meeting was held on Thursday where both parties discussed strategies aimed at restoring harmony in Benue communities.

The meeting was at the instance of the state which has members of Miyetti Allah from the state on one side and the 23 local government chairmen, traditional rulers, and security advisers to the governor on the other side.

The statement said that the governor vowed not to tolerate any effort from any quarter aimed at destabilising the state.

The statement read in parts, “I am quite saddened to speak about what some fellow Benue citizens are doing. What they are planting, planning, and executing is not in favour of the state.

“The security report has revealed that some Benue indigenes have gone out of their way to invite herdsmen all the way from Niger Republic to troop into Benue State.

“All in the name of bringing down his administration and this is unacceptable, but the security agents are doing their work.

“Security apparatuses are doing their work and those who would be found guilty of this, will not go unpunished. This is not the Benue we pray for. Electioneering period is over and now is governance.”

The governor explained that the herdsmen who had come into the state would gradually return to where they came from.

He, however, called on those who were not ready to join hands with his administration to improve on the development of the state to leave the state.

“Please if you cannot join hands with this administration to improve the state, to bring development to the state, where everyone has a sense of belonging, should please leave the state.

“I assure the entire citizens that they should remain calm for my administration is not ready to welcome any crisis in the state. Crisis is not the portion of Benue State.

“Security agencies are ready to do everything possible for the people to have peace. The influx of herders will not harm anyone but they will return gradually to where they have come from.

“The mischief makers who wrote a letter inviting herders to come to Benue State will be disappointed. I stand on the platform of new Benue where development of both human and infrastructure development is possible,”
the statement added.

The governor appreciated the people of the state for always supporting his administration through prayers and urged them to continue to stand by him and the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

Crime › Lagos Police Arrest One-chance Robbers by Morbeta11(op): 7:34am On Feb 18, 2024
Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested one 45-year-old, Okoro, and one 42-year-old, Patience, in a ‘one chance’ robbery in Lagos.

PUNCH Online gathered that the incident occurred at about 6:00 am on Saturday.

It was also learnt that the robbers often pose as commercial bus drivers while abducting unsuspecting passengers to different locations to defraud them of their properties.

In Nigeria, the term “one chance” is frequently used to describe a robbery committed by a group of criminals who pick up people who are waiting for a bus or taxi just to rob them.

A police source told our correspondent that the robbers frequently transport people in the Olusosun, Ojota, area of the state, noting that they were arrested based on reliable information that they had gotten from the public.

The source added that one of the victims had been able to identify one of them, stating that they had taken N37,000 from her two weeks ago.

“Some suspected thieves are always parking around the Olososun Ojota area in the pretense of taking passengers to their destination but instead take them to an unknown destination and steal from them.

“The incident happened around 6 am, and one Patient, aged 42, and one Okoro, aged 45, were arrested based on the credible information received from the public. One of the victims was able to recognise them, and she said they stole about 37,000 from them,” the source said.

When contacted, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident to our correspondent on the telephone, stating that the investigation is ongoing.

He said, “The incident has been reported. The suspect will be arraigned at the conclusion of the investigation.”

PUNCH had reported that Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested a suspected one-chance robbery leader, Ndubisi George, aged 49.

Politics › Criticising Tinubu For Economic Collapse, Insecurity Will Have Consequences, Mat by Morbeta11(op): 6:16am On Feb 18, 2024
Mr Matawalle said that the President and his team were working to alleviate the burdens on the citizens.

Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has said making ‘unwarranted’ and ‘unguarded statements’ against President BolaTinubu’s government over insecurity and rising food prices will have consequences.

Mr Matawalle, in a statement by the ministry of defence spokesperson, Henshaw Ogubike, on Friday, “cautioned Nigerians against using inflammatory comments against the government.“

He said, “Unguarded utterances coming from some sections of the populace are incisive and destructive and can exacerbate tensions and lead to violence in our beloved nation.”

Mr Matawalle said Mr Tinubu “is trying his best in tackling the economic challenges being experienced by Nigerians. The President and his team are tirelessly working to alleviate the burdens on the Nigerian populace, advising the agents of disunity to refrain from further unwarranted utterances, as such will have consequences.”

Mr Matawalle’s warning came on the heels of anger over economic hardship and rising food prices. The National Bureau of Statistics reported that the country’s inflation rate increased to 29.90 per cent in January 2024 from 28.92 per cent recorded in December 2023.

Last week, in Niger, Kano, Osun states, protested against the high cost of food, while the Nigerian Labour Congress declared a two-day nationwide protest over the issue.

Amid the development, Fuji musician, Wasiu Ayinde “KWAM1” and a Nollywood actor, Olaiya Igwe, who campaigned for Mr Tinubu, have raised the alarm over the increasing process of commodities in the country.

Also, Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar-led Northern Traditional Council warned that rising poverty, hunger and insecurity in the country would force people to revolt against President Bola Tinubu’s government soon.

In his response, Mr Tinubu directed the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to release about 42,000 metric tonnes of grain, including maize, millet and garri across the country.

On Thursday, Mr Tinubu directed the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, State Security Service and the Nigeria Police to go after food hoarders.

The International Monetary Fund in a summary of its assessment of the Nigerian economy lauded Mr Tinubu’s release of “cereals from the grain reserve, provided subsidised fertiliser to farmers,” amongst others as measures “to ease the impact of rapidly rising inflation on living conditions.”

Nigerian Female Drug Lord Who Works Day Job As Lawyer, 4 Others Arrested In Sting Operation In Abia
photo

One Adaobi Nweke, identified as a drug lord and a lawyer was arrested along with four hard drug peddlers in Umuahia during the operation.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), in collaboration with the Abia State government, has seized hard drugs that weighed 1.217 kg in a sting operation jointly carried out in Umuahia.

One Adaobi Nweke, identified as a drug lord and a lawyer was arrested along with four hard drug peddlers in Umuahia during the operation.

Addressing reporters about the operation, the Deputy Governor, Ikechukwu Emetu, commended the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Homeland Security and the NDLEA for the successful operation.

He said the Abia State government is committed to flushing out all forms of criminality and described drugs as the bedrock of all criminal activities.

According to him, Abia is not a haven for criminals.

He warned all drug kingpins and other criminals to leave the state or face arrests.

He said, “Abia is not a safe haven for any criminal. To all drug kingpins, the directives from the Governor of Abia State is very clear, stay away from Abia State, we don’t need you.

“You are not part of the development of the state. Drugs can’t develop Abia State. We want our youths to be safe and very useful to the Government of Abia State. Drugs happen to be the bedrock of all criminal activities that can be done by any group of people.”

He said that right from the inception of Governor Alex Otti’s administration, the government promised Abia people its determination to flush out all kinds of criminality in the state, adding that it started with Lokpanta Cattle Market, where kidnapping activities were taking place.

Earlier in his remark, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Homeland Security, Mr. Chukwunenye Alajemba narrated how the joint operation led to the success.

He said, “Yesterday, the 14th day of February 2024, just before midnight, the office of the Governor on homeland security in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Abia Command conducted a successful joint operation on the premises of one Miss Adaobi Nweke at number 23 Arochukwu Street by Calabar Road where the joint team seized a very large amount of prohibited drugs, like cocaine, cannabis, methamphetamine which is called mkpurumiri and cash sum of more than N500,000.”

He alleged that Adaobi, a lawyer by profession and daughter of a late drug kingpin in Umuahia, Joe Kin Jagwa has damaged many youths through her illicit activities.

Mr. Alajemba stated that the operatives also raided a popular hotel around Downbelow in Umuahia.

He said the state government had declared war on drugs and all forms of criminality in the state.

He appreciated the NDLEA for its support and disclosed that the war against drugs in the state was still ongoing and advised those peddling drugs to desist forthwith.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma and the State Commander of NDLEA, Adelanwa Amos Adetunsi were present at the press briefing.
